SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY — This is not a new story. The calendar flips to September, the Saratoga season is in its final few days and Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas is having another birthday.

Lukas turns 88 Saturday and the beat goes on. He will get up at 3 a.m. and within an hour will arrive at his barn located a couple of hundred yards from the Oklahoma training track. As usual, he will be in the saddle on his pony accompanying his horses as they go out for their morning exercise. In the afternoon, with a big cowboy hat on his head, he will be in the paddock at Saratoga Race Course to saddle a couple more starters.

Forget about a party. Lukas said he has to make sure that his wife Laurie is in line with his desire to treat Sept. 2 as pretty much just another day. He doesn't want any surprises.

“What we do here is we get a big old cake and we put it out there on the picnic table, let everybody get one of those plates over there and just have at it,” he said. “That's it.”

It is impossible to know who has been the oldest trainer to send a horse to the track since Thoroughbred racing commenced at Saratoga in 1863. At this point, Lukas is definitely not the oldest. The legendary James “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons reached his 88th birthday before the 1962 Saratoga season. In one of those can-you-believe-this Saratoga stats, Fitzsimmons was the leading trainer at Saratoga that summer, his finale upstate before retiring the following June. He locked up the title, which only took nine victories during the 24-day season, with three wins on the next-to-last day of the meet, Aug. 24. As the trainer for the Phipps family, Fitzsimmons had top-quality stock in his barn. Four of his nine wins were in stakes: the Schuylerville, Adirondack, Bernard Baruch and Seneca.

Fitzsimmons, who died at the age of 91 in 1966, switched from an undistinguished career as a jockey to training horses and continued on with distinction in parts of eight decades. He was the leading trainer at Saratoga four times and the national earnings leader five times. His record of 13 of Triple Crown race victories, stood for 56 years until Lukas picked up his 14th in 2013.

Lukas was a school teacher and coach before going full-time into training Quarter Horses in 1969. Equibase stats show him starting his career training Thoroughbreds in 1974. He has 4,910 victories and over $292 million in purse earnings. Once he got rolling with his nationwide Thoroughbred stable, he became the gold standard and among his many other successes, led the nation in earnings 14 times in a span of 15 years.

Decades ago, Lukas made it clear that he had no intention to retire and has continued on. While he is in Saratoga, he likes to play the machines at the nearby Saratoga Casino.

“If I get an afternoon off, I'm so bored,” he said. “That's why I end up in the casino. I've got to have another challenge so I go in there and try to beat them where the odds are really bad. I don't even handle an afternoon off very good let alone if I woke up at nine o'clock and had breakfast and wondered what the rest of the day was going to be.”

Lukas said continuing to do what he has been doing all these years–getting up in the middle of the night, climbing into the saddle and operating his stable–are elements of the elixir that has kept him going. He's not about to stop.

“I think those people that back off, every one of my friends colleagues and so forth that I saw retire and back off, at say, 70, every one of them went downhill,” he said.

In the last 30 years, five of his top owners have died, which has forced him to restructure his business. He said he is proud that at his age he is still able to compete at the top at tracks in Kentucky, New York and Arkansas.

“But here's the thing: I've eliminated the big stable,” he said. “I've limited it to 40 head. That allows me to be hands-on and personal with every horse, much different than when I had the assistants like Todd [Pletcher] and Mark Hennig and all these kids underneath me. So, I limit it to 40. It gives me great satisfaction. I see every horse.”

After a long run at Saratoga, Lukas skipped the 2020 and 2021 seasons due to a combination of the Covid-19 pandemic and a drop in quality of his stable. He returned last summer, compiled a solid 7-6-2 record from 31 starters and had purse earnings of $774,927. His GI Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath (Arrogate) was the star of the stable, but ended up second to Nest (Curlin) in the GI Coaching Club American Oaks and the GI Alabama S. Secret Oath is still with Lukas, was second in the GI Personal Ensign S., and he is confident she will run well in the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. at Keeneland.

Not only did he have success on the track in 2022, but with new owners, John Bellinger and Brian Coelho, who operate as BC Stables, he was active at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale.

“We went through a lull there,” Lukas said. “Even though we kept the barn full, we didn't have the quality. Now we have picked up Bellinger and Coelho and we should finish up here in the next couple of years–finish up, I mean until I die–we should finish up pretty good.”

The stable hasn't been quite as strong this summer at Saratoga. Entering Friday it has three wins and 10 seconds from 32 starts and Lukas is hoping for a couple more victories. He will send out a pair of runners on his birthday. On Sunday, he will try to win the GI Spinaway S. for the seventh time with BC's maiden Lady Moscato (Quality Road). Just Steel (Justify) will carry the BC colors in the GI Hopeful S. on closing day Monday. He will be Lukas's 34th starter in the Hopeful, a race he has won a record eight times.

Always looking ahead, Lukas said he expects to have a better-balanced barn in 2024. This year he is heavy with 2-year-olds–14 of the 39 horses he is training–and some of them might put him back on the road to the Triple Crown.

“That's building for the future,” he said. “We've already bought some really good yearlings. If we come back next year and bring 20 to 25 head, there will be some good 3-year-olds in there and some good 2-year-olds in there. We'll be building more to where we used to be.”

If he has his way, Lukas will win a race at Saratoga after his 89th birthday and step past Fitzsimmons again.

In this continuing series, we examine the past winners of significant filly/mare races by the lasting influence they've had on the breed. Up today is Keeneland's GI Juddmonte Spinster S., always a stellar race that also has a number of notable producers to its credit.

First run in 1956, the Spinster has become one of the most coveted prizes on the racing calendar. There's just something special about the fall event and the copious champions it has attracted in front of the home crowd. Juddmonte, honored with the Eclipse as outstanding breeder five times and recognized as one of the most savvy and illustrious breeders in the world, has sponsored the Spinster since 2005.

Five mares have won the race twice, giving the sport 61 individual winners from 66 runnings of the Spinster. Two–the William Schettine-bred Broodmare of the Year Take Charge Lady and the phenomenal Phipps blue hen Numbered Account–were previously featured in our “Background Checks” for the GI Alcibiades S., GI Test S., and GIII Schuylerville S.

Following are the some of the other most important Spinster winners by what impact they have had on the sport through their sons and daughters.

Miss Linda (Arg) (1997, Southern Halo–Miss Peggy {Arg}, by Fitzcarraldo {Arg}): The dam of just one winner from a half-dozen foals, this Argentinean-bred is an unlikely addition here. However, a grandson is MGISW Lord Nelson, a young stallion who died last year at age nine after a multi-year battle with laminitis and whose name keeps popping up with winners.

Clear Mandate (1992, Deputy Minister–Dream Deal, by Sharpen Up {GB}): A homebred for G. Watts Humphrey, Jr. and his aunt, Pamela H. Firman, this striking chestnut produced GISW and sire Strong Mandate, MGSW/MGISP and sire Newfoundland, and SW and sire Full Mandate. Her first three yearlings sold at Keeneland September in three consecutive years for $3.2 million, $3.3 million, and $2.5 million, respectively.

Inside Information (1991, Private Account–Pure Profit, by Key to the Mint): Just five foals out of this wonderful Phipps homebred made it to the races, including 2005's champion 3-year-old filly and MGISW, Smuggler. Another daughter produced MGSW Gone Astray, while English MGSW Kessaar (Ire) also descends from her. Multiple consecutive generations on both Inside Information's sire and dam side have been part of the Phipps stable since 1946.

Bayakoa (Arg) (1984, Consultant's Bid–Arlucea {Arg}, by Good Manners): This marvelous Argentinean-bred champion and two-time Spinster winner only had four foals, with just two making it to the races and only one winning. Before she had a winner of her own, Bayakoa's first unraced daughter had foaled four-time GISW Affluent. Another daughter added GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner Fort Larned and GSW Walkabout. This summer's GIII Regret S. winner at Churchill Downs, Walkathon, also descends from Bayakoa.

Track Robbery (1976, No Robbery–Left At Home, by Run For Nurse): This chestnut's best foal was MGSW & MGISP Train Robbery. Her two daughters by Alydar each produced a Grade I winner: Breeders' Cup Classic winner Cat Thief and Triple Bend Breeders' Cup Invitational H. victor Pohave. Track Robbery was bred in Kentucky by Edgar Kitchen.

Glorious Song (1976, Halo–Ballade, by Herbager {Fr}): Bred in Ontario by E. P. Taylor, Glorious Song was a Canadian Hall of Famer and an American champion who was even better as a broodmare. Her sons included Rahy, a GSW-U.S. & G1SP-Eng runner who was among North America's leading sires during his tenure, and Singspiel (Ire), a U.S. champion who was also a GI/G1 winner in England, Canada, and Japan, as well as winner of the Dubai World Cup before it was a group event. Glorious Song's daughters and descendants are responsible for Group 1 winners Vivlos (Jpn), Mezzo Soprano, Cheval Grand (Jpn), Verxina (Jpn), Campanologist, and Danon Chantilly (Jpn).

Susan's Girl (1969, Quadrangle–Quaze, by Quibu {Arg}): Another two-time Spinster heroine, Susan's Girl had a signature son in Copelan. Winner of three Grade I races at two and a homebred for Fred Hooper, Jr., Copeland was a stalwart in the Florida stallion ranks who got better than 10% black-type winners from starters.

Straight Deal (1962, Hail to Reason–No Fiddling, by King Cole): A homebred champion for Bieber-Jacobs Stable, Straight Deal produced three stakes winners from her 10 foals, including GISW Desiree. Her daughters and granddaughters additionally produced GI Breeders' Cup Turf winner Dangerous Midge; MGISW Adored; GISWs Qualify, Scorpion, and Alwajeeha; MGSW and excellent sire Belong to Me; and MGSW and GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Eight Belles.

Trainer Rohan Crichton said he has given up on his attempts to run Bajan Girl (Speightstown) in Sunday's GI Juddmonte Spinster S. at Keeneland after being told he would not be allowed to enter.

Crichton is one of five trainers recently suspended by Gulfstream officials after it was found that they were violating house rules regarding clenbuterol. He is in the midst of serving a 30-day suspension and cannot run at any of the tracks owned by The Stronach Group. However, a suspension issued by a racetrack is not reciprocal and, unlike a suspension coming from a regulatory agency, does not have to be honored elsewhere.

The TDN was unable to reach anyone from Keeneland Wednesday night to conform that Bajan Girl cannot run in the race.

“We are not running at Keeneland,” Crichton said. “I'll just sit back now and let the whole process play itself out. One day, we'll be able to look back.”

Crichton said he understood why Keeneland took the position that it did.

“I think the bad publicity around this whole thing caused them to do what they did,” Crichton said. “I understand. It's not their fight and they didn't cause this. It is what it is.”

Earlier in the week, Crichton listed Sunday's GII Beldame S. at Belmont as another possibility for his filly, but he said he would not attempt to enter that race either. When asked to clarify NYRA's position on Bajan Girl, NYRA said that it will discourage any trainer under suspension at Gulfstream from entering races at Belmont.

“NYRA is reviewing the action taken by 1/ST to suspend a group of trainers for violating house rules at Gulfstream Park,” said NYRA spokesman Patrick McKenna. “As that process continues, NYRA is requesting that these trainers immediately refrain from running horses at NYRA tracks for the duration of the suspension imposed by 1/ST. Should those trainers not honor this request, then NYRA will consider a number of options to determine if additional sanctions are warranted.”

Bajan Girl would have been a double-digit longshot in either the Beldame or Spinster. She's never won a stakes race and is coming off a a fourth-place finish in the Love Sign S. at Colonial Downs.

Having been suspended at Gulfstream for allegedly violating rules regarding the use of clenbuterol, trainer Rohan Crichton may not be able to run his filly Bajan Girl (Speightstown) in the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. to be run Sunday at Keeneland.

Keeneland released a statement Tuesday indicating that it is considering its options.

“We are in the process of obtaining information regarding the reported suspensions from Gulfstream Park so Keeneland is in a position to make an informed decision about race entries,” it read. “As you know, and as is clear from our actions for 85 years, Keeneland continues to work in furtherance of our mission to perpetuate the best in Thoroughbred racing, which definitely includes fair competition and integrity.”

“Right now she's being trained towards her next start,” Crichton told the Daily Racing Form. “Preferably we'll be able to run her in the Spinster. Our second option is the Beldame. I've been very forthcoming with Keeneland and have asked if they will take my entry. There is also the possibility they would let my owners enter her with one of the other trainers they use in Kentucky.”

The Spinster is a “Win and You're In” race for the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff.

So far as the GII Beldame S. at Belmont, also scheduled to be run Sunday, goes, NYRA spokesman Pat McKenna said the matter is under review.

It was announced last week by Gulfstream that Crichton was among five trainers that were suspended after they were found to be in violation of house rules at the Florida track regarding the use of clenbuterol. The others were Georgina Baxter, Daniel Pita, Peter Walder and Gilberto Zerpa. The finding came after out-of-competition testing, which included hair and blood samples, was performed.

Crichton was suspended by Gulfstream and not by the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering, which means his status is not clear cut. Unlike a suspension issued by a racing commission, a suspension by one racetrack does not have to be upheld by another. However, as first reported by the Paulick Report, there is a clause in the Keeneland condition book listed under “special notices” that appears to cover the Crichton situation. It reads: “At the discretion of the stewards, and without notice, the entries of any person, or acceptance or transfer of any entries, may be refused.”

Keeneland's barn notes on Sunday and Monday listed Bajan Girl as a probable starter in the Spinster. Tuesday's notes did not include her name among a list of potential starters.

Owned by Robert Slack and Daniel Walters, Bajan Girl was fourth in the Love Sign S. at Colonial Downs in her most recent start and is three-for-13 lifetime.

A native of Jamaica, Crichton was the leading trainer at the 2020 Gulfstream Park West meet. He is 33-for-161 on the year for a winning percentage of 20%.

The viability of the horse business hinges on a precarious equilibrium. Its values have to work out often enough for the rich guy to keep spending, but not so often that the rest of us have to pack up and go home. Very seldom, however, are both extremes embraced so proximately as by Meg Levy last weekend.

On Sunday, the Grade I success of Valiance (Tapit) in the Juddmonte Spinster S. vindicated all the promise, in pedigree and physique, she had evinced as a $650,000 yearling sold through Levy’s Bluewater Sales at Saratoga in 2017.

Earlier that same year, however, Levy had been driving to a rather less glamorous Fasig-Tipton auction: the Kentucky Mixed Winter Sale in February. Somebody got a message to her that a boarding farm, just down the Newtown Pike, was trying to find a home for an abandoned More Than Ready mare. Staring at an unpaid bill of $10,000 and counting, they would take $500 to remove the wretched creature from their books.

Well, it was Levy’s birthday; and the mare was named, of all things, Four Wishes. “Oh, gosh, well you never know,” Levy said to herself. “Why not stop by and see her?”

Half a dozen mares were turned out in the paddock. They all looked fine, except one. Remember this is a woman who spends all her time trying to get horses to thrive; to look their best, through whatever it takes in terms of nutrition, grooming, shoeing and all the rest of it. “Poor thing,” Levy thought, as she approached. But then she caught that look, that eye; that window into the inner mysteries of a horse. As a parcel of bones and sinew, the mare was plainly in a bad place. But that gleam, in the low winter sun, showed that something vital still flickered within.

“I’ve always been very funny about the eye that a mare has,” Levy reflects. “It sounds cheesy, but I always feel that you see the heart coming through. And she just looked at me with a quality eye. Because, believe it or not, I see a lot of horses not in the best of shape. It’s not always because they’ve received bad care. Sometimes they’re just in too competitive a situation, and that might well have been the case here.

“Of course, she really didn’t have any pedigree to speak of. No black type in the first two dams, and herself unplaced. So, really, all she had going for her was that she’s by More Than Ready. But I thought she had a beautiful eye and, the way she looked to me, I just felt like she was worth giving a home.”

Levy went on to Fasig, and told her husband: “I bought myself a birthday present.” Over the years, Mike had tried to “put the blinkers on” somewhat, such is her predilection for taking clients’ horses when they had reached the end of the road. But she felt strangely excited.

“I remember calling Patty, who was running our farm at the time,” she says. “‘Oh, I just bought a mare for 500 bucks. Can you go pick her up later? There’ll be some paperwork that comes with her.’ Because there was an agister’s lien on her. And she was like, ‘All right, crazy lady.'”

With respect, Levy didn’t feel quite so excited about the fact that 9-year-old was carrying a Revolutionary foal. But then Four Wishes delivered a quite stunning colt. True, the package remained so uncommercial that he only made $8,000 as a Fasig-Tipton October yearling before disappearing to Peru. No New York premiums down there, clearly; but it was heartening to see that the mare could produce such a good physical.

And the New York angle could work better next time: Mike had helped to put together a syndicate to stand Laoban (Uncle Mo), then just starting out at Sequel Stallions. Laoban, co-owned by Bluewater client Mike Moreno of Southern Equine, had broken his maiden with a surprise win in the GII Jim Dandy S. The Levys had a breeding right, and Four Wishes looked a good fit.

“I thought: ‘Well, he seems a really nice horse and should complement her,'” says Levy. “She’s medium-sized and a bit round, like a More Than Ready can be, and he’s big and tall and angular.”

Four Wishes, in the meantime, had really begun to flourish. Not that there was any magic to it.

“You know, you just do a couple of simple things right,” Levy explains. “What we always do, when they ship in. Float their teeth, make sure they have a paddock mate that suits, all that stuff. But she just bloomed. Oh, she did. She was gorgeous.”

Sure enough, when her Laoban filly was born in April 2018, Bill Johnson called from Stonegate Farm and exclaimed: “Wow! I think you’re really going to like this one. That mare has had a really nice filly, big, tall and angular.”

Sure enough, when the pair came back to Kentucky, the baby looked fabulous–a chip off the old Indian Charlie block.

“Just so good-looking, so athletic,” Levy enthuses. “And the filly soon became a farm favorite. At the time my son Ryder was working the yearlings, and also Elliott Walden’s son Will, and they both just loved her. And they’ve been around a lot of good ones, especially Will. And we’ve funny little video clips of her jogging round the walker and the both of them saying: ‘Runner!'”

Not that all this had happened overnight. Let’s remember that Four Wishes had already taken a lot of time, energy and cost; with, so far, only an $8,000 yearling in Peru to show for it. Sadly, moreover, she then lost a Daaher foal and had to be given a fallow year. And, in the meantime, her fabulous daughter was nearly undone by disaster.

Last summer the farm team were loading her, with around a dozen others, to go to the New York sale in Saratoga. “She decided that she was not happy with this process,” Levy relates. “And kicked the wall of the van so hard that she broke one of her hind feet. I was so disappointed. But we had no choice, after she was treated by a podiatrist, but to re-enter her in the Fasig-Tipton October Sale–not, we know, traditionally the absolute best place to sell a New York-bred.”

Sure enough, while a lot of people liked her in Lexington, those two blank dams and a rookie New York sire was a tricky combination. But then along came the client who had helped to put Bluewater on the map when giving $175,000 for a Dehere filly at Fasig’s July Sale in 2000. She became Take Charge Lady, whose name can be found twice below that of Valiance on the Spinster roll of honor.

“Kenny McPeek has that history of buying those kinds of horses,” Levy says. “So in the end we were really glad that he got her [for $50,000], we just felt it would give her a chance.”

Whenever one of her family saw McPeek, they would pester him.

“Hey, how’s that filly, what’s her name again? Simply Ravishing?” “Oh, she’s fine. Doing good.”

Then McPeek took her up to Saratoga and, as her debut neared, started sending videos of her workouts. Levy figured this had to be promising.

But she could not anticipate the authentic fairytale that would unfold when Simply Ravishing ventured out in the afternoon, in the colors of Harold Lerner, Magdalena Racing and Nehoc Stables: first winning a maiden special weight on the turf; then a stakes, again at Saratoga but switched to dirt, by daylight.

That emboldened McPeek to run her in the GI Darley Alcibiades S. at Keeneland last Friday–a race he had won four times, including with Take Charge Lady. Busy preparing another bargain filly for a momentous Classic appointment the next day, McPeek watched from Maryland as Simply Ravishing made all by six lengths from another filly from his barn, Crazy Beautiful (Liam’s Map).

“We were at the racetrack, right there on the apron, and I was just crying,” Levy says. “You don’t get many moments as special in this business, right? I mean, it’s just unbelievable. You know, it can’t be explained. I giggle every time an article mentions how she’s bred: ‘the first winner from the mare.’ Actually she’s her first horse even to hit the racetrack. I think her first foal, another Revolutionary, was sold as a riding horse.

“And it has just all clicked for me, how lucky we are with the friends we’ve made in the business, and the clients who have become friends. This mare would have never been bred to Laoban, were it not for Mike Moreno.”

But both Laoban and Levy herself were only just getting started. The next day, another of Laoban’s first crop, Dreamer’s Disease, likewise made all for an emphatic success in an optional allowance. And then Keepmeinmind, another in the Southern Equine silks, outran 50-1 odds for second in the GI Claiborne Futurity S. in only his second start.

Then came the Spinster success of Valiance, whose sale through Bluewater for breeders China Horse Club mirrored that of recent GIII Pocahontas S. winner Girl Daddy (Uncle Mo).

“We were lucky enough to have Valiance at the farm before she went to the sale, and got to know her very well,” Levy recalls. “In the end, we came up with a partnership at Saratoga, because we really thought there was something special about her. And it was like a friends and family deal: with China Horse Club staying in, and Aron Wellman [of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners] and Marty Schwartz both having both been so

good to us, so instrumental in our business over the years.”

Indeed, Bluewater sold another gray Spinster winner for Schwartz in Asi Siempre (El Prado {Ire}) for $3 million in 2007.

“Valiance looked so fantastic in the paddock,” Levy says. “She moved great, was very focused, and just seems to be getting better and better. We all hoped she might get a piece of it, but it was a shock to see her make that move on the outside and then come back and look like she wouldn’t blow out a candle.”

There may be some divided loyalties ahead, with Girl Daddy likely to cross swords with Simply Ravishing at the Breeders’ Cup, but there’s no doubting that Bluewater’s association with China Horse Club is on a roll. They sold another filly by Valiance’s sire, out of GI Alabama S. winner Embellish The Lace (Super Saver), to Claiborne for $1.25 million during the opening session of the September Sale at Keeneland.

“She was just an amazing physical and had all the pieces in the right place,” Levy reports. “Hopefully we’ll see a lot more from her. In general, of course, it was a difficult market. But having experienced several lows in the business, including the 2008 crash, I guess it’s a bit different from a young person going into it and trying to be optimistic. Having been through some of those things, I think you learn to adjust; and to deliver. It’s no fun delivering bad news to clients. But we’re lucky to have some

that could race their horses, and hopefully everyone appreciates you being straightforward. Yes, the bull’s-eye was very small, but we were fortunate enough to have a couple that did hit. So we’ll live to fight another day.”

It’s a rare pleasure, in 2020, to find someone with as feel-good a story as Four Wishes. But Levy is seasoned enough to take a step back and urge some positivity regardless.

“Long-term, I think there are some good things going on in the

business,” she stresses. “The Horseracing Integrity Act, most obviously. And I was hugely inspired by the Preakness, watching that filly just look the colt in the eye and say, ‘Not today.’ Racing is not dead yet. These horses will always inspire us, no matter what.”

For her own team, mind you, this was a weekend that would have stood out in any year.

“Yes, it has all been pretty crazy,” Levy says. “I think there might be a miracle both ways, between Laoban and Four Wishes. Laoban seems to take after Uncle Mo. You know, I love stallions that are homozygous black, so there’ll never be a chestnut. I saw quite a few of those Laoban foals, and they all have that Uncle Mo/Indian Charlie look about them: angular, athletic, something about their heads and ears. And smart.”

As for her rescure mare, Levy has naturally done some research. It turns out that Four Wishes was actually bred by some friends, but the trail goes cold after her racing career. Anyhow, all’s well that ends well; and she is now in foal to Speightster

“Besides selling the filly, this is the first Grade I winner we’ve ever bred for ourselves,” notes Levy. “Obviously it’s pretty cool for Laoban, because when you look at this mare, how could anyone–looking at all the normal indicators–expect such a good racehorse out of her?

“But what is it they say? ‘If wishes were horses…’ It’s just amazing, so strange. I can’t say what made me go over there that day. I wish I could explain it. You hope and dream, I guess, but the way this thing happened? I could never have imagined that a situation like this could somehow arise from that transaction. It’s just crazy.”

Qatar Racing, Flurry Racing Stables and Big Aut Farms' Shedaresthedevil will take on older horses for the first time Sunday when she heads a field of six fillies and mares in the 65th running of the $400,000 Juddmonte Spinster (G1) going 1 1/8 miles on the main track.

Slated as the ninth race on Sunday's 10-race program at Keeneland, the Juddmonte Spinster is a “Win and You're In” race for the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) to be run here Nov. 7. First post Sunday is 1:05 p.m. ET with the Juddmonte Spinster going at 5:45 p.m.

Trained by Brad Cox, Shedaresthedevil brings a three-race win streak into the Juddmonte Spinster highlighted by her 15-1 upset in the Kentucky Oaks. Prior to that race, she won the Indiana Oaks (G3) by 5 lengths to mark her second Grade 3 victory of 2020.

Florent Geroux, who has been aboard for Shedaresthedevil's past three starts, has the call Sunday and will break from post position three. Geroux won the 2016 Juddmonte Spinster on I'm a Chatterbox.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=197 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=198 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Emollient in 2013 is the most recent 3-year-old to win the Juddmonte Spinster.

Chief among Shedaresthedevil's challengers is Karen Eggert and Paul Eggert's Ollie's Candy, who has raced exclusively in Grade 1 company in 2020.

Trained by John Sadler, the 5-year-old Ollie's Candy enters the Juddmonte Spinster off a runner-up effort in the Clement L. Hirsch (G1) at Del Mar, a race she won in 2019. Sunday's race will mark her third venture outside California this year, having posted a runner-up finish in the Apple Blossom (G1) at Oaklawn Park in April and a third, beaten a neck, in the Ogden Phipps (G1) at Belmont in June.

Joel Rosario has the mount and will break from post position two.

The field for the Juddmonte Spinster, from the rail out with riders and weights, is: Saracosa (Martin Garcia, 124 pounds), Ollie's Candy (Rosario, 124), Shedaresthedevil (Geroux, 121), Our Super Freak (Brian Hernandez Jr., 124), Valiance (Luis Saez, 124) and Lady Kate (Tyler Gaffalione, 124).
