Jess's Dream (Curlin), the first foal out of Hall of Fame mare Rachel Alexandra, succumbed to laminitis Sunday. The news, reported by Stonestreet Farm, was posted to social media. A maiden special weight winner and 'TDN Rising Star' at Saratoga in his first and only start, Jess's Dream entered stud in 2017 and stood for several years at Ocala Stud in Florida. He was pensioned from stud for reasons unrelated to the laminitis in Oct. 2023 and was being pointed towards a third career under saddle as a track pony for Stonestreet Farm. From 230 foals of racing age, he sired 102 winners, seven stakes winners and one graded stakes winner, the 2021 GIII Kitten's Joy S. winner Chess's Dream. His top progeny include Suncoast S. winner Dreaming of Snow and stakes winners Beth's Dream and Intrepid Daydream.

Despite immediate veterinary invention his condition deteriorated to a point where we were unable to keep him comfortable.

Since breaking her maiden at Colonial Downs last September, Dreaming of Snow has been a Florida girl, contesting three straight at Tampa Bay Downs including an 8 1/2-length win against optional claimers two starts back Dec. 17. Fourth in the Gasparilla S. Jan. 14 behind a pair ofrivals she faced Saturday, the $60,000 OBS March grad was let go as an unconvincing 38-1 shot against newly crowned Eclipse champion Wonder Wheel and GII Demoiselle S. winner Julia Shining.

Undeterred by the falling rain and hustled to the front after brief contact with Champagne Calling (Empire Maker) to her inside at the break, Dreaming of Snow tucked in against the rail continued to set the tempo up the backstretch, opening up nearly a length on the field as the opening half went in :47.07. Challenged by a three-wide Wonder Wheel as the field exited the far turn, Dreaming of Snow refused to give in, fighting gamely on the rail to hold off the champ and a closing Julia Shining for the win.

“I know this filly well and when I got on her in the morning for the first time, I told [trainer Gerald Bennett] I have to stay on her,” said winning jockey Samy Camacho. “She's pretty nice, but I never thought she would run two turns like this. She came back again when Wonder Wheel came to her. I beat Wonder Wheel– Wow! I'm pretty happy!”

Snow Fashion has a 2-year-old colt, Snowname (The Big Beast) and foaled another colt, Keep On Snowing (Valiant Minister), last year but was not reported bred for 2023.

An earner of $1,624,392 on the racetrack and a winner from six to nine furlongs, Girvin is represented by well-received first yearlings this year, which included a $200,000 colt who was the co-highest-priced yearling for a freshman sire at the Fasig-Tipton July Sale.

Rachel's Valentina, a Grade 1 winner and the only daughter of Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra, will be bred to record-setting sire Into Mischef, the mare's owner Stonestreet Farm announced Monday on social media.

The mating would produce the 8-year-old daughter of Bernardini's fourth foal.

Her first foal, the Curlin colt Alejandro, is a newly-turned 3-year-old, and he has raced twice. Alejandro finished fourth on debut in September at Churchill Downs, then he finished second to future Smarty Jones Stakes winner Caddo River in a November maiden special weight, also at Churchill Downs. Trained by Steve Asmussen, who also conditioned Rachel Alexandra, Alejandro is working toward his 3-year-old debut at the Fair Grounds.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Rachel's Valentina followed up with a Pioneerof the Nile filly, a recent 2-year-old who remains unnamed. She delivered a Curlin filly in 2020, then she was bred to Quality Road for the 2021 foaling season, but the mating did not catch.

Racing as a homebred for Stonestreet Stables, Rachel's Valentina won two of six starts for earnings of $738,800. After breaking her maiden on debut, the filly won the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes, then she finished second in the 2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland. At three, she finished second in the G1 Ashland Stakes and competed in that year's Kentucky Oaks.

Rachel's Valentina is the second and final foal out of 2009 Horse of the Year and 2016 Hall of Fame inductee Rachel Alexandra, who was pensioned from broodmare duty after a pair of difficult foalings. Complications from the birth of Rachel's Valentina required abdominal surgery, an extended stay at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, and a long recovery period after she returned to Stonestreet Farm.

Jess's Dream, Rachel Alexandra's first foal, won his lone start, and he now stands at Ocala Stud in Florida, where his first foals are 3-year-olds of 2021. The son of Curlin was recently represented by his first stakes winner at stud, when Chess's Dream won the G3 Kitten's Joy Stakes on Jan. 30 at Gulfstream Park.

Into Mischief, a 16-year-old son of Harlan's Holiday, stands at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $225,000.

He comes off a record-shattering season in 2020, where he set the all-time single-season progeny earnings mark, with over $22 million. It was his second consecutive year finishing atop North America's general sire list by earnings. His runners were led in 2020 by Horse of the Year Authentic, champion female sprinter Gamine, Grade 1 winner Dayoutoftheoffice, who was an Eclipse finalist for champion 2-year-old filly.

Michael Dubb, Steven Bouchey, Bethlehem Stables and Chester Bishop's Chess's Dream got a ground-saving trip under Tyler Gaffalione and slipped through an opening along the rail in mid-stretch to upset Saturday's $100,000 Kitten's Joy (G3) at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The ninth running of the Kitten's Joy for 3-year-olds going a mile on the grass was the first of five graded-stakes worth $600,000 in purses on a 12-race program highlighted by the $200,000 Holy Bull (G3), Gulfstream's next step for 3-year-olds on the road to the March 27 Curlin Florida Derby presented by Hill 'n' Dale Farms at Xalapa (G1).

Fresh off his maiden triumph in a 7 ½-furlong turf sprint Dec. 13 at Gulfstream, Chess's Dream ($18.60) completed the distance in 1:35.18 over a firm course to become the first stakes winner for sire Jess's Dream, a son of Hall of Famers Curlin and Rachel Alexandra.

Based at Gulfstream with trainer by Mike Maker, Chess's Dream is also a half-brother to 2019 Kitten's Joy winner Casa Creed. He was cross-entered in Sunday's Texas Turf Mile at Sam Houston.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“It's very nice when you make the right decision. It's definitely a 50-50 proposition,” Dubb said. “I held my breath and made sure he'd be able to get through. He got through and he was much the best, so we're just over the moon.”

Flanked by 1-5 favorite Never Surprised, making his sophomore debut after going unbeaten at 2 capped by a victory in Aqueduct's Central Park, Chess's Dream settled in third as Original, a 12-1 long shot shipping in from New York, ran a quarter-mile in 23.30 seconds and a half in 47.54 pressed by Kentucky Pharoah, a winner of his last two starts over the same course and distance, including the Dania Beach Jan. 2.

Gaffalione stayed patient as he remained in striking position on the turn awaiting room, which materialized once the field straightened for home. Gaffalione sent Chess's Dream through and the Florida-bred colt sprinted clear to win by two lengths as Never Surprised emerged from a three-way photo finish with Original and Sigiloso for second. Kentucky Pharoah and It's a Gamble completed the order of finish.

“I knew there was going to be a lot of speed. It kind of surprised me when Johnny [Velazquez on Original] committed early, but I had the perfect position down on the fence. I was able to save ground,” Gaffalione said. “On the far turn, in looked like Johnny's horse was trying to get out a little bit on him. I didn't panic and a hole opened up and when I asked him he really accelerated. He's a long-striding colt. He'll just get better the longer he goes.”

Ocala Stud has set 2021 stud fees for its roster of 16 stallions for the upcoming breeding season, led by Girvin whose fee will be $6,000 S&N for his third year at stud.

Ocala Stud will welcome three new stallions in Grade 1-winning millionaires Win Win Win and Seeking the Soul who will both stand for $5,000 S&N, and also new is Dak Attack, a stakes-winning son of Ghostzapper, whose fee will be $2,500 S&N.

Girvin, a leading 3-year-old of his crop, captured the 2017 Grade 1 Haskell Invitational Stakes and registered back-to-back graded stakes in taking the G2 Risen Star Stakes and the G2 Louisiana Derby. An earner of $1,624,392 on the racetrack and a winner from six to nine furlongs, Girvin saw his first foals arrive in 2020. He has covered 273 mares in his first two books, and he was Florida's most popular stallion of 2019, breeding 149 mares that season. He was bred to 124 mares in 2020.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Win Win Win won this year's G1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga in impressive fashion, defeating four Grade 1 winners, including Complexity in a final time of 1:21.71 for seven furlongs. Last season at three, Win Win Win set a new track and stakes record winning the Pasco Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, rolling to a 7 1/4-length victory in 1:20.89, running a 2 on the Ragozin Sheets. He hails from a deep Live Oak family and is a descendant of the influential Halo sire line. He will stand as a partnership between Live Oak Stud, Airdrie Stud, and Ocala Stud.

Seeking the Soul, a Charles Fipke homebred, enjoyed an illustrious racing career, winning the 2017 G1 Clark Handicap, the 2018 G3 Ack Ack Stakes and the 2019 G2 Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs. All told, he won or placed in eight graded stakes, which included runner-up finishes in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and the $9 million G1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes. On the board in 20 of 32 starts, Seeking the Soul bankrolled more than $3.4 million.

Like Girvin, Awesome Slew welcomed first foals in 2020. The versatile son of Awesome Again won graded stakes from seven furlongs to 1 1/16 miles during his racing career and earned $1,223,310 while winning or placing in 12 graded stakes. He will stand for $4,000 S&N.

Adios Charlie, a perennial leading sire in Florida, will stand for $4,000 S&N. The Sunshine State's No. 1 sire in 2019, Adios Charlie is a top five sire again in 2020. Also standing for $4,000 S&N are Jess's Dream who has first-crop 2-year-olds in 2020, Grade 1 winner Noble Bird who will be represented by first 2-year-olds in the coming year, and The Big Beast, Florida's second-ranked first-crop sire of 2019 who is represented this year by stakes winner Hear My Prayer, as well as stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Up in Smoke.

Trained by Eddie Plesa Jr. for owners Karl and Cathi Glassman, Restofthestory broke sharply in the 5 1/2-furlong event and quickly assumed command, opening three lengths on her rivals heading into the far turn. She widened her advantage through the lane to score as much the best. It was the second career start for the dark bay filly who finished second in her Aug. 8 debut at Gulfstream.

Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud and a graduate of this year's OBS Spring sale, Restofthestory is produced from the winning Harlan's Holiday mare Holiday Flare, a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Dream of Angels and stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Candrea.

Jess's Dream is a regally-bred son of Horses of the Year Curlin and Rachel Alexandra. A Stonestreet homebred, Jess's Dream was a TDN Rising Star after an impressive winning debut at Saratoga as a 3-year-old for Stonestreet Stables and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.

Jess's Dream stood the 2020 season for $5,000 S&N.
