Al Shira'aa Racing have been announced as the new sponsors of the G3 Prix Vanteaux in a two-year partnership with France Galop. The 2024 edition of the Al Shira'aa Racing Prix Vanteaux, run over nine furlongs for three-year-old fillies, will be held at Longchamp's opening fixture of the season on Sunday, April 7.

Kieran Lalor, Al Shira'aa Racing's bloodstock and racing manager, said, “We are delighted to come on board as sponsor of the Group 3 Prix Vanteaux. It is a very important prep race for the Classics and one we hold dearly having won it in the past with Rumi and Jannah Rose, both trained by Carlos Laffon Parias.

“Sheikha Fatima Bin Zayed Al Nahan [founder and owner of Al Shira'aa Racing] was very happy about this opportunity and it is a nice way for us to give back to French Racing, which has been so good to us in the past. We would like to thank the team at France Galop and ParisLongchamp for the opportunity and look forward to continuing this partnership into the future. Now we need to find our next filly to compete for us in this race.”

Guillaume de Saint-Seine, president of France Galop, added, “We are very proud to welcome Al Shira'aa Racing into the fold of partners who sponsor important racing events in the French racing calendar. The decision of its owner Sheikha Fatima Bin Zayed Al Nahan to support the race, once more shows the attractiveness of our racing program.

“An owner and breeder, she is an internationally renowned figure in the racing industry and very well known in France. On behalf of everyone involved, I wish her all the best and success for the upcoming season.”

Carlos Laffon-Parias, the first Spanish trainer to win the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, announced on Wednesday that he will retire from training at the end of the year.

Based in Chantilly, Laffon-Parias is best known as the trainer of Solemia (Ire) (Poliglote {GB}), who caused an upset when beating leading Japanese hope Orfevre (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}) in the 2012 running of Europe's premier middle-distance race. He also won the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac on the same card with Silasol (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}), while the likes of Laverock (Ire) (Octagonal {NZ}), Falco (Pivotal {GB}) and Recoletos (Fr) (Whipper) were other top-level winners for their trainer during a career in France spanning more than three decades.

In 2023, Laffon-Parias saddled two new Group 1 winners, including Prix de la Foret heroine Kelina (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) who, the trainer confirmed, will race on as a four-year-old as he prepares to embark on his final season.

Explaining his decision to retire, Laffon-Parias told the Nick Luck Daily Podcast, “The last three years I've talked with my wife regarding the decision to stop and go back home [to Spain]. My sons are now working and have left the house, so it's time for me and my wife to change our lives.

“I'm healthy, I'll be 61 next month. I think when you're healthy is the right time to do it. I've worked all my life from Monday to Sunday and I want to do other things rather than to work 11 months a year, every single day. I think it's the right time to do it, otherwise it might be too late.

“I see a lot of trainers finish their careers because they haven't got any more horses to train or they have financial problems. I don't want to have those problems. I want to stop and I don't need much to live with. We've got a house already in the south of Spain, I'm going to sell my yard, and this is enough for me and my wife.”

Laffon-Parias added of Kelina, “The Wertheimer Brothers have decided to keep her in training and she's a very sound filly. There isn't a race for her until May 1, the Prix du Muguet. That is a Group 2 and then there is Royal Ascot or the Falmouth. We could run in the Lockinge against the colts, but I would prefer to take more time. There are a lot of races for her, but nothing before the middle of the year.”

Al Shira'aa Farms' bonanza weekend continued apace at Deauville on Sunday, with their star filly Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) coming back from her midsummer break to win the 10-furlong G2 Sumbe Prix Alec Head which is the re-named Prix de la Nonette. Off since her anti-climactic sixth in the G1 Prix de Diane, the G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine was restrained to race in third by Christophe Soumillon off the moderate pace set by the G2 Ribblesdale S. runner-up and G1 Irish Oaks fourth Lumiere Rock (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}). Having to fight once she had got alongside that rival 150 metres from the finish, the 7-10 favourite proved equal to the task to prevail by a head. “It's a great honour as, to me, the Head family are one of the biggest families in the racing world so to win the first one under Alec Head's name means a lot to me,” the rider said. “We had a lot of good wins together and while it's always sad to lose somebody so important in racing, he has left a great legacy.”

Great finish in the opener at @fgdeauville as Jannah Rose gets up to win the Group 2 Sumbre Prix Alec Head under the Christophe Soumillon drive… pic.twitter.com/zlSzToElS1

The win had added import, with Carlos Laffon-Parias being the husband of Alec Head's granddaughter Patricia. “It's nice to see her leave her race in the Prix de Diane behind,” the trainer said. “This is the real Jannah Rose. She was a bit fresh and the pace wasn't quick enough for her, but in the end she quickened well and won safely I think. I will keep her over that trip and she will come back in the [G1] Prix de l'Opera.”

For Soumillon, success in the race in its inaugural new guise also carried significant weight. “It's a great honour as, to me, the Head family are one of the biggest families in the racing world so to win the first one under Alec Head's name means a lot to me,” the rider said. “We had a lot of good wins together and while it's always sad to lose somebody so important in racing, he has left a great legacy.”

Pedigree Notes

Jannah Rose's unraced dam Sophie Germain (Ire) (Indian Ridge [Ire}) is also responsible for the G2 Ridgewood Pearl S. winner Creggs Pipes (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) and the listed-placed Silver Spear (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}). The second dam is the G1 Oaks d'Italia heroine Nydrion (Critique), whose family includes the GI Breeders' Futurity hero and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Square Eddie (Smart Strike). She also has a 2-year-old filly by Invincible Spirit (Ire) bought by David Redvers for €280,000 at the Goffs Orby and a colt foal by Oasis Dream (GB).

Beaten only once since her debut and now the proud owner of two Group 1 titles including the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) goes into the unknown on Sunday as she bids to extend her tally in Chantilly's G1 Prix de Diane Longines. So assured at ParisLongchamp, where she also garnered the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac on Arc day, the G3 Prix d'Aumale in September and G3 Prix de la Grotte in April, Yeguada Centurion SL's prized homebred now has to conquer new territory and a new trip. There should be no fears as far as stamina is concerned, being by Churchill who stayed this far at three out of a GIII Santa Barbara S. winner in Queen Blossom (Ire) (Jeremy).

Blue Rose Cen is after something rare and special here. Only the French legend Allez France in 1973, Divine Proportions in 2005 and Zarkava (Ire) in 2008 have completed the Marcel Boussac-Poule d'Essai des Pouliches-Diane treble, so there is that extra pressure on Christophe Head who looks to land this Classic 10 years on from the last of his aunt Criquette's in Treve (Fr).

“I think she is in prime form,” he said. “I'm crossing my fingers that everything goes well in terms of the longer trip. She is really one of those brilliant kinds and has been very professional the whole time. I have the feeling we can do it again–it's going to be a very nice race and of course we will encounter new fillies, good fillies, but I can't wait. She has a great mentality, has been easy to train and has been working brilliantly.”

Ready Yourself

This is as deep a Diane as has been seen for some time, with the Gosdens' representative Running Lion (GB) (Roaring Lion) almost certainly up to this standard on the evidence of her electric performance in Newmarket's Listed Pretty Polly S., Ballymore Thoroughbred Ltd's TDN Rising Star Pensee Du Jour (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) looking so dominant in the early-season staging posts of the Listed Prix Rose de Mai and G3 Prix Penelope, Ballydoyle's Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) moving up to a more suitable trip still giving off the vibe that she is a top-class filly in the making, and Al Shira'aa Farms's unbeaten G1 Prix Saint-Alary winner Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) prompting such notable comments from the normally reticent Carlos Laffon-Parias.

Any Other Rose?

Jannah Rose may have fared best in the draw on Thursday, with her middle position in seven meaning Christophe Soumillon can make an early decision as to where best to position her throughout those all-important early stages. Three winners in the last nine years emerged from that stall and six of the last nine were drawn between six and nine and it is interesting to note that in the G3 Prix Vanteaux and Saint-Alary she was also drawn middle to wide. In the latter, she was produced to beat Elusive Princess (Fr) (Martinborough {Jpn}) by just 3/4 of a length, but the manner of her performance suggests there will be plenty more to come faced with sterner opposition.

Carlos Laffon-Parias, who is part of the Head family having married Christopher's cousin Patricia, is after his first renewal and said, “I have come close before, but time is passing and I must win it before things become more complicated! I remain confident I will eventually win it and I hope that day is close at hand.”

Bridging The Gap

Blue Rose Cen has been putting some notable fillies in their place for some time now, but this is a different test and different day for a couple who are looking to make it closer. Never Ending Story was beaten over five lengths by Christopher Head's pride and joy in the Marcel Boussac, but that was after a troubled trip on contrastingly deep ground when things hadn't yet fallen into place for her. In one way, her five-length fifth in the Pouliches was a surprising backward step having looked so dynamic when slamming the 1000 Guineas third Matilda Picotte (Ire) (Sioux Nation) in Leopardstown's Ballylinch Stud 1000 Guineas Trial in April, but there is a nagging sense that middle distances and summer ground will see her make a leap forward as it did for her dam Athena (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). Behind Blue Rose Cen in the Grotte and Pouliches, Everest Racing's Lindy (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) also has solid claims for being more competitive this time, but stall 13 is a major disadvantage and she will need all the luck from there.

Ryan Moore believes that his mount's story is far from over. “I don't think we saw the best of my filly at all when she was fifth in the French 1000 Guineas last time,” he said. “She didn't run badly, but she didn't fire and pick up as I was expecting as I thought she had a big shot at winning that race. However, I think she remains a Group 1 filly and I hope she can prove it over a trip that she is bred to get. She could just surprise some fillies with more obvious claims.”

Best Of The Rest

Chantilly's card also features the G3 Prix du Bois Longines, with the TDN Rising Star fillies Les Pavots (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Ramatuelle (Justify) taking on Ecurie Jean-Louis Bouchard and Bruno De Montzey's unbeaten colt Zorken (Fr) (Goken {Fr}) and the G3 Prix du Lys Longines, where Maniatic (Ire) (Intello {Ger}) and Don Diego De Vega (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) provide further evidence of the merits of Ace Impact (Ire) (Cracksman {GB}) having chased home that impressive G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero in this venue's Listed Prix de Suresnes last month.

From homebreds, to pricy auction purchases, the 15 G1 Prix de Diane Longines's contenders run the gamut of backgrounds. G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches victress Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) will try to add another Classic to her resume, but she faces strong competition in the form of the unbeaten Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), and the Gosdens' Running Lion (GB) (Roaring Lion) among others.

NOVAKAI (GB), Lope De Vega (Ire)–Elasia (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire})
Owner/Breeder: Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum
Trainer: Karl Burke
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Her 92-rated dam won at up to 1m6f and is from the family of quirky but talented stayer Pallasator (GB). From a stable in rich form, she was second to subsequent Oaks winner Soul Sister in the G3 Musidora S. on her sole start this season. A maiden winner on debut at two, she was later runner-up in both the G2 May Hill and G1 Fillies' Mile. A surprise not to see her start in the Oaks as she should stay beyond the distance of the Diane.

JANNAH ROSE (IRE), Frankel (GB)–Sophie Germain (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire})
Owner: Al Shira'aa Farms
Breeder: John Hayes
Trainer: Carlos Laffon-Parias
Sales History: €650,000 Goffs Orby yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: A half-sister to the Group 2 winner Creggs Pipes (Ire), she is unbeaten in her three lifetime starts, including once last year and most recently in the G1 Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary. A real class act who should start close to favourite.

PENSEE DU JOUR (IRE), Camelot (GB)–Painter's Pride (Fr) (Dansili {GB})
'TDN Rising Star'
Owner: Ballymore Thoroughbred Ltd
Breeder: Dayton Investments Ltd
Trainer: Andre Fabre
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: From a family which includes the brilliant Arc winner and sire Peintre Celebre, she is a half-sister to the Meydan Group 3 winner Canvassed (Ire) (Shamardal) and has looked very smart in her three runs this year. Never beaten to date, she won on Chantilly's all-weather track in February before coping well with soft conditions to post easy victories in the Listed Prix Rose de Mai and G3 Prix Penelope. A smart prospect if she can handle faster turf than she has encountered so far.

KHAHIRA (FR), Pedro The Great–Excitante (Fr) (Excelebration {Ire})
Owner: Andy Claire, Abdel-Hakim Benahmed & Nour-Eddine Smail
Breeder: Mme J-H De Chevigny
Trainer: Myriam Bollack-Badel
Sales History: €25,000 Arqana October yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Her dam was placed once at two over 6f and is herself out of a 6f Listed-winning juvenile. Khahira was highly tried at two, but was consistently in the first three and eventually won her sixth of seven starts last year, at Deauville. Kept on the go through the winter, she has made another five appearances this year, including when third in the Listed Prix de la Seine. This looks a tough assignment.

LINDY (FR), Le Havre (Ire)–Llanita (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire})
Owner: Everest Racing, Ecurie Waldeck, Meridian International, Ecurie Elag, Ecurie Nininoe, Didier Provost & Frank Dhooghe
Breeder: Ecurie La Vallee Martigny Earl
Trainer: Christophe Ferland
Sales History: €90,000 Arqana August yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Runner-up in both the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and G3 Prix de la Grotte to Blue Rose Cen (Ire) having previously been unbeaten in three starts, including at Listed level. She has a decent chance to become her late sire's third winner of the Diane.

TASMANIA (GER), Australia (GB)-Tusked Wings (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger})
Owner/Breeder: Gestut Schlenderhan
Trainer: Francis-Henri Graffard
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Her dam won the G2 Diana Trial, was fourth in the G1 Preis der Diana, and produced the Listed-placed Task (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) as her first foal. Grand-dam Tucana (Ger) Acatenango (Ger) is a half-sister to Tertullian (Miswaki), from a long established Schlenderhan family. Tasmania looks very much an improving sort, who built on her debut fourth in October last year by winning maiden and conditions races in Paris, in the latter beating subsequent G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Ottery (GB). An interesting each-way prospect who should cope with stepping up in trip in time.

Owner: D P Howden
Breeder: The Bella Nouf Partnership
Trainer: John & Thady Gosden
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: A half-sister to Group 3 winner Majestic Glory (GB) (Frankel {GB}), her dam is a dual-winning half-sister to three black-type performers. Impressive winner of the Listed Pretty Polly S. in May and was among the leading fancies for the Oaks but was scratched at the start when unruly in the stalls. As long as there is no repeat drama she could go close.

Owner: LNJ Foxwoods, Ecurie Victoria Dreams & Jean-Philippe Dubois
Breeder/Trainer: Jean-Philippe Dubois
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: A daughter of the Group 3-winning Deep Impact stallion Martinborough, she is the first foal of her unraced dam who traces back to a Lagardere family which includes the Group 2 winner Diamond Mix (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}). The winner of both starts last year, and again on debut this season at Saint-Cloud in April, she has subsequently been a close second in the G3 Prix Cleopatre and was then runner-up to Jannah Rose in G1 Prix Saint-Alary, for which she was supplemented. Doesn't need to have improved much to play a leading role.

Owner: Mrs John Magnier/Michael Tabor/Derrick Smith/ Westerberg
Breeder: Coolmore
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Won the G3 Ballylinch Stud Priory Belle 1000 Guineas Trial S. and was fifth in the Poules d'Essai des Pouliches, having placed at Group 1 level in France at two. She is out of a GI Belmont Oaks Invitational S. winner and is Athena's first foal. From the family of Urban Sea (Miswaki), which is replete with Group 1 winners, the granddaughter of Cherry Hinton (GB) (Green Desert) is a live chance, but must continue to improve.

Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: A Group 1 winner at two and already successful in the G1 Poules d'Essai des Pouliches this year, the homebred is the first reported foal for G3 Park Express S. heroine Queen Blossom, who also won the GIII Santa Barbara S. in the U.S. Her granddam was placed in the G3 Silver Flash S., and Blue Rose Cen has every chance of adding another Classic laurel. Breaking from the favourable inside gate, she is the one to beat.

Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Bearing her breeder's second colours, this filly won at Chantilly in May, and is a half-sister to the useful stakes winner Dariyma (Fr) (City Zip), who was third in the G2 Prix Dollar. A win here would be a shock.

There were the usual winners and losers in equal measure during Thursday's draw for Chantilly's G1 Prix de Diane Longines, with David Howden's Listed Pretty Polly S. winner Running Lion (GB) (Roaring Lion) receiving stall 12 of 15 in Sunday's 10 1/2-furlong Classic. Despite that unfavourable post position and her antics in the starting gate ahead of the Epsom Oaks, the John and Thady Gosden trainee is deemed the likely favourite ahead of Yeguada Centurion SL's G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) who drew the inside rail. Ballymore Thoroughbred Ltd's Listed Prix Rose de Mai and G3 Prix Penelope-winning TDN Rising Star Pensee Du Jour (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) was not done any favours in 11 in a race which has been won by fillies drawn in double figures only twice in the last 10 runnings.

One of the duo to overcome a wide post was Star Of Seville (GB) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}) in 2015, and her trainer John Gosden knows the significance of the draw. “She's a tough filly and she needs to be from stall 12,” he stated. “She's in great form and we're really happy with her and her work has been great this year. She's very business-like, both in the mornings and her races and has shown nothing but a great mental attitude to her racing and has been very consistent.”

Others of note include Ballydoyle's Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in stall three, Everest Racing's Pouliches runner-up Lindy (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) in 13 and Al Shira'aa Farms's unbeaten G1 Prix Saint-Alary winner Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in seven. The Saint-Alary runner-up Elusive Princess (Fr) (Martinborough {Jpn}), supplemented by LNJ Foxwoods, is in stall 14.

Sent off the 8-5 favourite for a competitive renewal of ParisLongchamp's G1 St Mark's Basilica Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary, Al Shira'aa Farms' Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Sophie Germain {Ire}, by Indian Ridge {Ire}) duly affirmed her abundant quality with a success that was as smooth as it gets in these demanding conditions. Switched off early by Christophe Soumillon, the unbeaten G3 Prix Vanteaux winner was coaxed to the front 300 metres from the line and asserted for a 3/4-of-a-length verdict over Elusive Princess (Fr) (Martinborough {Jpn}), who in turn avenged her G3 Prix Cleopatre defeat by Crown Princesse (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) by a short head.

“She is a top filly,” trainer Carlos Laffon Parias said of the €650,000 Goffs Orby purchase. “To win that group 3 last time out on only her second start was already an accomplishment and I knew she would have no problem staying an extra furlong. She looked the winner two out and I had some thoughts earlier in the week to run her in the Pouliches, but this race looked weaker and obviously the winner of the Guineas is a very good one. If the Guineas winner runs in the Diane, we will meet her there and it will be a sensational Classic. She is learning and is more relaxed–she is gaining experience and this will only make her stronger.”

As it was at Newmarket, ParisLongchamp's ground is going to take some getting through for the protagonists in Sunday's G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains and G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and it is safe to say that appreciation of give underfoot is essential.

That applies to several of the star colts and fillies lining up for the first domestic Classics and it is certain to be no worse than the testing going that Isaac Shelby (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) had to deal with at Newbury last time. Leading home the riderless Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in his last race in the Sangster silks in the seven-furlong G3 Greenham S., Wathnan Racing's acquisition was adding to his fast-ground G2 Superlative S. success as a juvenile, so versatility is assured.

Brian Meehan has spent a while in the Classic wilderness and this is a key moment for the Manton-based trainer who last enjoyed Group 1 success 11 years ago. “He has been working great,” he said. “The Guineas was a nice form boost in a funny sort of way. I know they are saying it will be heavy ground, but it doesn't really matter what sort of ground we get–we are going to get whatever we get. The thing is, he is there on good-to-firm and soft, so we'll take our chance.”

Flying The Flag

France's defence of the Poulains may rest with Malcolm Parrish's American Flag (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), who beat the re-opposing Kendly (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in convincing fashion in the Listed Prix Omnium II at Saint-Cloud in March before following up in the course-and-distance G3 Prix de Fontainebleau last month. That form has taken a knock subsequently and there is no telling at the moment how good Yann Barberot's stable star is. “The horse is in great shape,” his trainer said. “He appreciates the very soft terrain and he has a very good mentality. He knows Longchamp and I am confident for Sunday.”

Good Knight?

Trailing Isaac Shelby in the Greenham, KHK Racing's TDN Rising Star Knight (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) has to rebound with the form of his G3 Horris Hill S. now also looking to have more holes in it than at the start of the season. Whether the deep promise of his Yarmouth debut can be fulfilled is the burning question for Simon and Ed Crisford. “I don't know what happened at Newbury to be honest, but the horse has bounced out of the Greenham,” Ed Crisford said. “He just didn't go a yard and there's nothing much to say about that other than it was very disappointing. He seems to have come alive and come on for that race, so he's going to France and hopefully he can run a big race albeit he has to prove it now.”

Anybody's Guess

On the face of it, Hisaaki Saito's Good Guess (GB) (Kodiac {GB})) has something to find even allowing for his G3 Prix Djebel success from TDN Rising Star Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great) and Fabrice Chappet would not have been heartened by the draw in eight. What effect that post position will have this year, with only 10 runners, remains to be seen and Breizh Sky is even wider in the outside stall. Alain Jathiere's colour-bearer is beginning to look a habitual “nearly horse” and he needs a strong pace to run at, which is not guaranteed here.

Trainer Alessandro Botti is clinging on to hope that things will fall right for Breizh Sky at some point. “The forecast very soft ground shouldn't be a problem for him, as he finished third in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere when there was plenty of give,” he said. “His comeback effort in the Prix Djebel was quite good, but the race was devoid of pace and things panned out perfectly for Good Guess.”

An Unfolding Story

When Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) encountered Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) in the course-and-distance G1 Prix Marcel Boussac, it was Yeguada Centurion SL's homebred who held the bragging rights but there was something in the seasonal return of Ballydoyle's blueblood that suggested it would be a lot closer as they re-engage in the Pouliches. Overwhelming the subsequent 1000 Guineas third Matilda Picotte (Ire) (Sioux Nation) and G3 Cournelsourt S. scorer Zarinsk (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) in Leopardstown's G3 Ballylinch Stud 1000 Guineas Trial S., the descendant of Urban Sea (Miswaki) will be a different proposition for Christopher Head's stable luminary to handle this time.

Looking Out For Lindy

Surrendering her unbeaten record to Blue Rose Cen in the G3 Prix de la Grotte over this course and distance last month, Everest Racing, Ecurie Waldeck and Meridian International's Lindy (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) hails from a family of soft-ground lovers and trainer Christophe Ferland is keen to have another go at the favourite. “Since her debut, Lindy has done nothing but improve,” he said. “She had a good winter and her comeback effort in the Prix de la Grotte was very good. She is very easy to handle and I harbour no worries about her ability to act over course and distance. She is a daughter of Le Havre and so I don't feel that the ground will be a hindrance to her. Depending on how she fares on Sunday, I hope to run her in the Prix de Diane. I have even entered her in the Arc, because I think that in time and given greater maturity that longer trips will be within her compass.”

Can Kelina Rebound?

It seems a long time ago that the Wertheimers' TDN Rising Star Kelina (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) was favourite for the Marcel Boussac and although she was last in that contest put up a fine comeback effort behind Quickstep (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in the course-and-distance Prix du Louvre conditions race last month. From the family of Dansili's Group 1 winners With You (GB) and We Are (Ire) and Frankel's Call The Wind (GB), the Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained homebred will be staying on when some have cried enough.

Jannah Rose Poised For Saint-Alary Test

Frankel might already have had a big afternoon by the time the G1 St Mark's Basilica Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary comes around, where his unbeaten daughter Jannah Rose (Ire) will be a warm order to build on her quietly-dominant display in the nine-furlong G3 Prix Vanteaux here last month. Al Shira'aa Farms' €650,000 Goffs Orby sensation is developing a formidable reputation which will be put to the test here by some talented fillies including Ballydoyle's Boogie Woogie (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). A daughter of the Irish Oaks heroine Seventh Heaven (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), she came up against the stable's kingpin Savethelastdance (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) at Leopardstown two starts back when the pick of Ryan Moore which gives an indication as to the regard in which she is held. There will be some surprised people if Elusive Princess (Fr) (Martinborough {Jpn}) can't reverse the form of the G3 Prix Cleopatre with Crown Princesse (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), with LNJ Foxwoods purchasing a half-share in the former after her luckless run. Both have been supplemented, but both have to raise their game to reward that decision.

As the only inexperienced member of the line-up for Sunday's G3 Prix Vanteaux, Al Shira'aa Farms' Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Sophie Germain {Ire}, by Indian Ridge {Ire}) had her work cut out but after her command performance in ParisLongchamp's Classic pointer all were left pondering where her considerable talent will take her. Off the mark in professional if not flashy fashion over a mile at Chantilly in September, the Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained half-sister to the G2 Lanwades Stud S. winner Creggs Pipes (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) was nevertheless not missed in the market as the 5-2 second favourite for the nine-furlong test. Racing under early restraint early from Christophe Soumillon with one behind, the bay who was a €650,000 Goffs Orby purchase made her move wide in early straight and struck the front 300 metres out en route to a comfortable 1 3/4-length success from Sea The Lady (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}).

“She is a very nice filly and considering what she does in the mornings, it was not a problem for me to run her in this group race on only her second career start,” Laffon Parias explained. “She has the speed for a race like the [G3] Prix de la Grotte next week, but I made the choice of this one thinking that it would be easier. She settled well in a race with a good rhythm and showed us all her quality in the straight. Now it looks like the [G1 Prix] Saint Alary and the [G1 Prix de] Diane, but an alternative is the [G1] Poule d'Essai [des Pouliches] and the Diane.”

Pedigree Notes
Jannah Rose, who becomes the 78th group winner for her sire, is out of the unraced Sophie Germain whose aforementioned daughter Creggs Pipes improved beyond all recognition from three to five years of age and also captured the Listed Cairn Rouge S. as well as placing in the G3 Fairy Bridge S. and G3 Blue Wind S. Also responsible for the listed-placed Silver Spear (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}), Sophie Germain is a daughter of the G1 Oaks d'Italia heroine Hydrion (Critique) from the family of the GI Breeders' Futurity hero and G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Square Eddie (Smart Strike) and the GI Personal Ensign H. heroine Pompeii (Broad Brush). Next up from the dam is a 2-year-old filly by Invincible Spirit (Ire) who was bought by David Redvers for €280,000 at the most recent Goffs Orby.
