Up to $50,000 in prize money will be offered in a unique contest coming to Indiana Grand Racing & Casino in early 2022. “Road to Louisville,” featuring 18 weeks of action beginning Saturday, Jan. 8 leading up to the Kentucky Derby Saturday, May 7, will include $20,000 in prize money with a unique twist thrown into the mix. The winner of the contest will have the option to purchase a yearling package at the 2022 ITOBA Fall Sale valued at $30,000 courtesy of the Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (ITOBA) along with Indiana Grand.

“Road to Louisville” is open to players both online and on-track at Indiana Grand and Clarksville OTB. Weekly and monthly prizes will be provided as points are cumulative throughout the event. The contest, which will include numerous races each week from select tracks, will be completed on Kentucky Derby Day to crown the overall winner of the $1,000 prize money and a chance to own a future Indiana racehorse.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=23 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=177 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“Our contests both online and on-track have become increasingly popular, and we wanted to do something to raise the stakes next season,” said Eric Halstrom, Vice President and General Manager of Racing. “After talking with ITOBA President Tom Mosley, we decided to partner with them on our current breeding and racing program, which is so lucrative right now. The idea was created to get one of our loyal racing fans involved with a hands-on ownership experience and enjoy a risk-free way to enjoy the thrill of Indiana Thoroughbred racing.”

If the winner opts in for the purchase of a yearling at the ITOBA Sale, they will receive up to $15,000 to purchase a yearling out of the sale, plus an additional $15,000 for care and training of the horse leading up to its racing debut in the summer of 2023. ITOBA is facilitating the details and assistance for the new owner and their new purchase.

“We are always looking for ways to promote our breeding and racing program and when Eric (Halstrom) came to us with this idea, we couldn't think of a better way to introduce our program to new individuals,” said Mosley. “Giving someone a complete experience, from purchasing a yearling at the sale to watching it train and make it to the races is a great way to bring exposure to Indiana racing.”

“Road to Louisville” gets underway with the racing card from Gulfstream Park. Points are based on payouts for the selected horse in the contest races. Weekly prizes will be allotted to the top three players each week with the top handicapper receiving $150, second place receiving $100 and third place receiving $50. Prizes are doubled if the player is competing at either Indiana Grand or Clarksville OTB.

“We wanted to ensure the contest was available to all players everywhere who are 21 or older but we wanted to find a way to reward our racing fans who participate at Indiana Grand and Clarksville,” added Halstrom. “By doubling the prize money, this will entice those who live around either location to submit their entries in person. In addition to the weekly prizes, we will also offer a monthly prize of $250 for the player who has the most accumulated points. That amount will also double to $500 if the player is participating at Indiana Grand or Clarksville.”

A request for a list of rules and more details about “Road to Louisville” will be provided by sending an email to horseshoeindycontest@gmail.com. Entry forms and additional details will also be available soon on the website at www.indianagrand.com.

The Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (ITOBA) awarded its first Herb and Darlene Likens Scholar Award recently at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. John Hernandez of Monticello, Ind. is the recipient of the first $2,500 scholarship from the newly installed program.

John is a graduate of Twin Lakes High School in Monticello, Ind. He is currently attending Ivy Tech in Lafayette, Ind. His father, Martin, works at Elliott Farms in Brookston, Ind., making John eligible for the award earmarked to families associated with Thoroughbred racing in the state of Indiana.

“This award was initiated by ITOBA this past spring to offer something to the thousands of people working behind the scenes in the Thoroughbred industry in the state,” said Tom Mosley, President of ITOBA. “Martin, John's father, has had his hands on so many horses that have emerged from this state. Martin is a prime example of a hard-working, dedicated, loyal horseman who is the backbone of the Indiana Thoroughbred industry.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Elliott Farms is Indiana's largest and oldest farm in the state. It is well known nationally for breaking, training, breeding and sale prep of the horses raised at the farm. Martin Hernandez has been a huge part of the entire services offered by Elliott Farms for more than two decades.

The Herb and Darlene Likens Scholar Award was created to assist Indiana's breeders, owners, farms, and their employees and families in their post high school educational expenses. The award is named after the Likens, longtime owners and breeders in the state, who assist with the award. The Likens are still active in breeding and racing Thoroughbreds from their farm in Madison County.

The Likens' Scholar Award leads into ITOBA's biggest event of the year, Indiana Champions Day set for Saturday, Oct. 30 at Indiana Grand. Racing begins at 12 p.m. and will feature four Thoroughbred stakes with followed by five Quarter Horse stakes, pushing purses for the day to more than $1 million. Numerous activities will complement the afternoon racing card, including a Cigar Rolling Station with free cigars to the first 200 racing fans, sweatshirt, hat, and license plate giveaways, two $1,000 handicapping contests, five $1,000 Megabet drawings, strolling entertainment, and food and beverage specials. The afternoon will be capped off with an appearance by the Headless Horseman.

Indiana Champions Day will also include two book signings associated with racing. Otto Thorwarth, who portrayed Ron Turcotte in the Disney movie “Secretariat,” will be available to sign his new book “No Ordinary Champion.” Tina Cleary, former Quarter Horse jockey, will also be available to sign her book “Growing Up With Moocher” based on a former Indiana racehorse. Both signings will take place trackside from 2 until 5 p.m.

The 19th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing is now in progress and continues through Thursday, Nov. 11. Live racing is conducted at 2:25 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 11. First post all other Thursdays leading up to the end of the meet begin at 3:25 p.m. A special Indiana Champions Day highlighting the state's top Thoroughbred and Quarter Horses will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, beginning at noon. More information about the 2021 racing season is available at www.caesars.com/indiana-grand.

The catalog for the Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association Fall Mixed Sale is now online and printed copies will be mailing out shortly, ITOBA announced Wednesday. The auction will be held Saturday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m. at the receiving barn at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The auction will be managed by Duane Swingley Auctioneers.

A total of 78 weanlings, yearlings, 2-year-olds and broodmares have been consigned to the sale.

“There has never been a better time to get involved in Indiana racing and breeding,” said ITOBA President Tom Mosley. “The 2021 stakes program at Indiana Grand is incredible with a total of 28 Indiana-bred and/or Indiana-sired stakes with a minimum purse of $100,000, and in 2022 we will have even richer races with two stakes at $200,000 and two others at $250,000. If you want to capitalize on the lucrative Indiana program, this sale is the best place to find racing or breeding stock.”

ITOBA has also launched a new bonus program that awards a total of $10,000 based on the highest money-earning Indiana-bred or -sired 2-year-old at Indiana Grand in 2022 that sells at the sale. The consignor and purchaser will be awarded $5,000 apiece.

A Texas Red yearling sold for $18,200 to Roger Spiess to top the Oct. 31 Indiana Thoroughbred Owners’ and Breeders’ Association (ITOBA) Fall Mixed Sale. The Indiana-bred gelding out of Color Me Special (River Special) was consigned by Dawn Martin. Overall, 69 horses went through the ring. A total of 66 sold for $263,400, giving the sale an average of $3,991 and an RNA rate of only 4%.

“While COVID-19 threatened the sale, so many people came together to make it a success,” said ITOBA President Bruce Murphy. “The fact that we only had three horses that didn’t meet their reserve shows that there was strong demand for horses and breeding stock to participate in the Indiana program.”

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic caused the sale to relocate from Indiana Grand Racing and Casino to Smith Training Stables in Fountaintown, Ind. Click for full results of the sale.
