It was harder work than expected, but Bertrand Milliere's leading veteran Iresine (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) ultimately made his class tell in Sunday's G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris. Held up with two behind early, the 11-10 favourite looked momentarily in trouble two out as Marie Velon asked him to close on the leaders. Staying on gamely in response, the G1 Prix Royal Oak and G1 Prix Ganay winner got to Marquisat (Ire) (Zarak {Fr}) a furlong later before asserting to score by a length.

Trainer Jean Pierre Gauvin revealed that Iresine, who had been second on his first start since April in the G2 Prix Foy last month, has an important date in his diary now. “I was concerned to see him so far back, but also confident because he looked very relaxed and when he is like that the good Iresine can really quicken and make up ground,” he said. “He always needs a race to be at his best and on his last run he was a bit too fresh and rusty after five months off. Marie's opinion is also important and she said it was the right Irsesine today.”

“We want to travel with him now, we felt it was too early last year but he is now ready for that,” he added. “We will go to Japan, because the JRA has been very nice to us and human relations are also an important part of this game and they have been very kind. They have allowed us to let Iresine travel with a stablemate, because travelling is not his forte. Even to come from our base in Lyon, he can be difficult so we worry for the long trip to Asia. Also the ground might be too quick for him, but it is a nice challenge and when you have to go you have to go.”

Was it ever in doubt? Iresine picks up late to win the Group 2 Prix du Conseil at @paris_longchamp… pic.twitter.com/GOoWvrebg4

Pedigree Notes
Iresine's dam Inanga (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) is a full-sister to the G3 Prix de Guiche and G3 Prix Daphnis runner-up In Chambers (GB) and a half to the dam of the G3 Sagaro S. runner-up Earth Amber (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}). The fourth dam Riverqueen (Fr) (Luthier {Fr}), who captured the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and G1 Prix Saint-Alary here, counts among her descendants the likes of the G1 Prix Jean Prat hero Rouvres (Fr) (Anabaa), the dual G1 Premio Presidente della Repubblica scorer Altieri (GB) (Selkirk) and the multiple Australian group 1 winner Zaaki (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}). Inanga's youngest progeny is a yearling colt by Mondialiste (Ire) named Morus {Fr}).

The Arc's missing piece Iresine (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) returns to action in that feature's hosting venue on Sunday, with the far-lesser spoils on offer of the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris scant consolation for messrs Milliere, Gauvin and Velon. Denied an entry in his country's finest race due to his gelded status, the reigning G1 Prix Royal Oak and G1 Prix Ganay winner may have had place claims there given his love of this circuit at which he has also won and been second in a G2 Prix Foy and been runner-up in a G2 Prix d'Harcourt.

Andre Fabre offers the main opposition to Iresine courtesy of the Wertheimers' G3 Prix de Reux winner Junko (GB) (Intello {Ger}) and Godolphin's unbeaten Marquisat (Ire) (Zarak {Fr}), with the latter the real unknown of the 11-furlong contest as a 3-year-old on the rise after confidence-building wins at Deauville and here in recent weeks. Baden-Baden's G3 Preis der Winterkonigin is the other race of intrigue on Sunday, with the Listed Koln-Winterkonigin Trial second and third Shagara (Ire) (Zarak {Fr}) and Lady Mary (Ger) (Lawman {Fr}) met by Gestut Brummerhof's promising Hannover debut winner Anna Riva (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

Sunday's G1 Prix Ganay was as strong as any in recent times and there was no fluke about the victory of Bertrand Milliere's Iresine (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}–Inanga {GB}, by Oasis Dream {GB}), who provided trainer Jean-Pierre Gauvain and jockey Marie Velon with a once-in-a-lifetime moment at ParisLongchamp. Carrying a penalty for his G1 Prix Royal Oak success when an eye-catching second to Simca Mille (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) in the G2 Prix d'Harcourt here three weeks previously, the 4-1 shot was anchored in last early with the pace generous. Delivered with perfect timing down the outer to overhaul the battling duo Simca Mille and Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}) inside the final 100 metres, the dark bay who was the joint-oldest in the line-up at six asserted to reverse the d'Harcourt form by 1 1/4 lengths, as Bay Bridge fared best of the seasonal debutantes a head away in third. The returning G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe runner-up Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}) was fourth, 1 1/2 lengths behind.

Returning from a break having failed to make an impact in the G1 Japan Cup, Haras de la Perelle and Stephane Wattel's Simca Mille (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}-Swertia {GB}, by Pivotal {GB}) again demonstrated his love of ParisLongchamp by winning Sunday's G2 Prix d'Harcourt. Impressive in the G2 Prix Niel here in September, having finished second to Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris over that same mile-and-a-half course and distance in July, the 7-1 shot was positioned close to the early pace by Alexis Pouchin dropping back in trip. In front at the top of the 2 1/2-furlong straight, he stayed on strongly as the G1 Prix Royal-Oak hero Iresine (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) put up a spirited chase and had 3/4 of a length to spare at the line over that rival, who was giving away two pounds. Al Shaqab Racing's G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano scorer and Arc fourth Al Hakeem (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) was disappointing as the 4-5 favourite, beaten four lengths in fourth.

“I had hoped we could leave Japan behind us, but there was some concern,” trainer Stephane Wattel said. “I still don't have a clue what happened there-I believed he had a good chance, but he was beaten four out and I kept questioning myself as to whether or not I had done something wrong. He was training well for this return, but I didn't know if he still wanted to fight so he gave us the perfect answer. We were lucky to have good ground and a good pace and the shorter trip didn't prove a problem. He is good. Period. We will be back for the Ganay.”

Iresine's handler Jean-Pierre Gauvin is keen on a rematch in the course-and-distance feature in three weeks' time, which is set to feature the returning Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}) and Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). “It was a great performance for a comeback, giving weight,” he said. “He runs superbly well at Longchamp, whatever the distance or the ground so if he is well he will return for the Ganay.”

Pedigree Notes
Simca Mille, who was also successful in Chantilly's G3 Prix du Lys last term, is the first foal out of Swertia, a daughter of The Aga Khan's G3 Prix de Conde, G3 Prix Penelope and G3 Prix Cleopatre-placed Sanjida (Ire) (Polish Precedent). Among Sanjida's half-siblings is the G1 Prix de Diane, G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and G1 Prix Saint-Alary-winning champion Sarafina (Fr) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}), who is in turn the dam of the G3 Prix d'Aumale scorer Savarin (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and her G3 Prix Messidor-winning full-brother Geniale (Jpn). Swertia's 2-year-old filly by Invincible Spirit (Ire) is named Slawena (GB).

ParisLongchamp stages a fascinating card on Sunday as the 2023 campaign moves onwards, with the G2 Prix d'Harcourt featuring a Group 1 winner in Bertrand Milliere's Prix Royal-Oak hero Iresine (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}). Saddled with a four-pound penalty for his triumph in the marathon test here in October, he has his work cut out dealing with genuine mile-and-a-half performers like Haras de la Perelle and Stephane Wattel's G2 Prix Niel winner Simca Mille (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and Al Shaqab Racing's G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano scorer Al Hakeem (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), who closed out his 3-year-old term with a 2 1/2-lengths fourth in the Arc. Al Hakeem is one of Rouget's more talented representatives and while he has some ground to make up on the stable's Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}), it is not a great deal and he is open to big improvement at four.

A Burgeoning Force?

In the nine-furlong G3 Prix la Force, it is the first reckoning of Rouget's TDN Rising Star Padishakh (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) who is untried in black-type company but who looked every bit up to scratch in two conditions races here and at Chantilly in September and October. Nurlan Bizakov's big French hope has his initial encounter with a Ballydoyle runner as the stable continues to spread out its Classic hopefuls. Greenland (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) is the one here and he is rated considerably better than the bare form of his last-of-four effort in the G2 Royal Lodge S. at Newmarket in September. Rouget's telling time continues in the G3 Prix Vanteaux over the same trip, where Ecurie Billon's Around Midnight (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}) re-opposes Sea The Lady (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) having beaten her in the Listed Criterium de l'Ouest at Craon in September before finishing runner-up in Deauville's G3 Prix des Reservoirs the following month. One of the dark ones is Al Shira'aa Farms' Chantilly maiden winner Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), a Carlos Laffon-Parias trainee who is a half to the highly progressive mare Creggs Pipes (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}).

Jean-Pierre Gauvin trainee Iresine (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}–Inanga {GB}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) had earned money in each of his 14 prior starts and was last seen annexing the 12-furlong G2 Prix Foy, on Arc trials day, at ParisLongchamp in September. He returned to the Bois de Boulogne venue and was upped in trip for Sunday's G1 Prix Royal-Oak, the track's final pattern race of the season, and registered a career best by clear water with a display of force in the latter stages of the 15 1/2-furlong stamina test. The crowd's 21-10 choice employed patient tactics from the outset and raced off the tempo in ninth, with just one rival in the rear-view mirror, until well beyond halfway. Taking closer order inside the last half-mile, he made relentless headway under pressure in the home straight to lead with 300 metres remaining and surged clear of the valiant Search For A Song (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was making her final career start, in uncompromising fashion for a three-length triumph.

“There were some unknown factors beforehand and they centred mainly on his ability to handle such a trip for the first time and on heavy ground,” explained Gauvin. “Marie [Velon] gave him the perfect ride and, at halfway, I was relaxed to see him racing under cover and not too far behind. This horse is just so good and I'm suprised at what he can do every time he shows up. He shows more, he gives more and he's just unbelievable. With a gelding so lightly raced, there is a great temptation to travel. He has been invited to Japan, but will not go. Not that we are afraid of the competition, but because it is very often fast ground at that time of year. We will have a look at the [G1] Hong Kong Vase [in December] and, if he travels, that is where he will go. After that he will have a long break at the farm and he'll come back as strong, or stronger, next year.”

No More Encores
Dual G1 Irish St Leger heroine Search For A Song made a bold bid from the front once committed for home along the false straight, but rallied in trademark game fashion when headed to significantly reduce a large deficit nearing the line. Becoming a millionaire in her final outing, the 6-year-old homebred retires to the paddocks with a 21-5-6-2 record and earnings of €1,003,453. “This was her last race, she has run great and it was another cracking performance from her,” confirmed Dermot Weld. “It has been an honour to train her. She has won two Group 1 races and placed a number of times at this level. Hats off to the winner, he must be a very good horse.”

Pedigree Notes
Iresine, the second of five foals and half to a yearling colt by Chemical Charge (Ire), is the lone winner produced by Inanga (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), herself a full-sister to G3 Prix de Guiche and G3 Prix Daphnis runner-up In Chambers (GB). Inanga, who is also kin to the dam of G3 Sagaro S. second Earth Amber (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}), is a granddaughter of G3 Prix Vanteaux second Reve De Reine (Lyphard) Reve De Reine's leading lights are G3 Prix de Guiche victor Roi De Rome (Time For A Change) and G3 Prix Thomas Bryon third Rose De Thai (Lear Fan). Rose De Thai, in turn, is the dam of three black-type winners headed by G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial victor Truth Or Dare (GB) (Royal Academy). Iresine's MG1SW fourth dam Riverqueen (Fr) (Luthier {Fr}) is the ancestress of ill-fated G1 Prix Jean Prat-winning sire Rouvres (Fr) (Anabaa) and dual G1 Premio Presidente Della Repubblica hero Altieri (GB) (Selkirk).

ParisLongchamp stages its penultimate autumnal farewell on Sunday, with the G1 Prix Royal-Oak the last pattern race to be staged at the prestigious Bois de Boulogne venue which draws its curtains on Thursday. There is no stand-out this year and the main protagonists are a notch or two below the likes of Vazirabad (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}), Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire} or even the sadly-lost 2021 hero Scope (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), but there is Bertrand Milliere's popular Iresine (Fr) by Vazirabad's sire whose three runs here include wins in last year's G3 La Coupe and the G2 Prix Foy when last seen Sept. 11. The mount of Marie Velon, the Jean-Pierre Gauvin-trained bay is moving markedly up in trip but looks the type to relish the extra distance.

While Nick Bradley Racing's Oct. 1 G2 Prix Chaudenay scorer Al Qareem (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) looks to be the leading 3-year-old and the accomplished Irish mares Search For A Song (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Princess Zoe (Ger) (Jukebox Jury {Ire}) would be emotive winners, there is the sense that another Longchamp lover Jannah Flower (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) is the key player. Al Shira'aa Farms' May 12 Listed Prix Gold River winner boasts two wins and three seconds from five starts at this track, with her latest efforts suggesting she is the class act in this line-up. Given too much to do on both occasions when second to Quickthorn (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in the G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil July 14 and to Sea La Rosa (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the Oct. 1 G1 Prix de Royallieu over 14 furlongs, the Pascal Bary-trained bay has a killer kick if Stephane Pasquier can get his fractions right.
