Ed Brown Fellow Selman graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Georgia last year with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science.

Ed Brown Scholar Davis will graduate this summer from Kentucky State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications.

“We are very excited to embark upon year two of our groundbreaking partnership with 1/ST and to facilitate this tremendous opportunity for Zaharia and Shaska, as they undoubtedly gain professional experience that will place them on the pathway to successful careers in the Thoroughbred industry,” said Ed Brown Society Chairman Greg Harbut.

The Ed Brown Society, founded in 2020, celebrates the rich history of African-Americans in the Thoroughbred industry and creates opportunities for young people of color that will qualify them for professional careers in the industry. 1/ST became the first member of the Ed Brown Partnership in January 2022.

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association is seeking current students or recent graduates for its internship program in Washington, D.C. The NTRA's new Washington office is located on Capitol Hill under the operation of former U.S. Congressman Tom Rooney, the President and CEO of the NTRA.

“With the new Congress in January and everything in Washington reopening after COVID, we are very eager to welcome interns into our D.C. office,” Rooney said. “The dynamic work environment of Capitol Hill is great for young people, and we hope to bring students with an interest in Thoroughbred racing and government affairs onto our team. One of my favorite things about being a Congressman was helping bring young people to D.C. and showing them how it works, and it is our hope that our internship program can do just that.”

Qualifications include, but aren't limited to, strong written and oral communication skills, the ability to take direction, learn and work independently and proactively, strong attention to detail and organizational skills and a team member mentality. The full internship posting can be found here.

The Equine Industry Program at the University of Louisville's College of Business announces the launch of the Horse Racing Industry Business Certificate. This unique, online-only certificate is designed for current and aspiring industry professionals focused on building successful careers in the horse racing industry. Students participating in this program will graduate with an in-depth knowledge of the issues that challenge the industry and insight into innovative business approaches required to resolve them.

“We worked in collaboration with the industry through local, national and international focus groups to develop the content for this program,” said Sean Beirne, equine industry program director. “We touch on topical and pressing issues happening in our industry including crisis management, the Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Act and an in-depth look at stakeholders including breeding farms, horse sales, racetracks and the rapidly expanding segment of aftercare. “As a former racetrack executive, I believe this certificate will help accelerate someone's career.”

The nine-credit-hour, graduate-level certificate is comprised of six courses. Each course is 1.5 credit hours and runs five weeks. The certificate is intended as a stand-alone program; however, the credits are applicable toward completion of an MBA.

Three courses will be offered in the fall of 2021. All six courses will be available in the spring 2022, with two courses per five-week session.

Horse Racing Industry Business Certificate courses:

EQIN 610 Horse Racing Industry Overview
EQIN 620 Strategic Communications for the Equine Industry
EQIN 630 Management and Leadership of Equine Enterprises
EQIN 640 Racetrack Operations and Related Activities
EQIN 650 Equine and Sports Analytics
Because of the program's location in famed Kentucky horse country, classroom instruction is supplemented with the opportunity for internships, field experience and contacts with prominent industry professionals.

Amplify Horse Racing, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to amplify education and careers in the Thoroughbred industry, has launched a mentorship program aimed at pairing young adults with Thoroughbred industry professionals.

The objectives of the program are to improve accessibility into the Thoroughbred industry, and develop understanding of what it is like to work in the sport by leveraging the passion, knowledge and experience of current industry professionals.

The initial pilot program will facilitate 10 mentor-mentee pairings through two mentorship approaches:

In-Person: Five mentees based in Kentucky will be selected and paired with mentors who work in the state. This pilot will focus on in-person meetings and engagement.

Virtual: Five mentees will be selected from anywhere in the U.S. and paired with suitable mentors. These pairs will meet virtually, removing geographic or transportation barriers that could limit interested young adults from connecting with the Thoroughbred industry.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The Amplify Horse Racing Mentorship Program is open to individuals aged 18-22, who demonstrate a desire to learn and a strong interest in working in the Thoroughbred industry. There are no restrictions based on academic achievement or Thoroughbred industry experience.

The initial mentorship program, which Amplify Horse Racing is using as a pilot, will take place from August through October 2021. Upon completion of the program, feedback will be gathered from participants to assess the viability of offering the program multiple times annually and including youth mentees.

“Ever since Amplify Horse Racing started in 2019, the goal of its founders and early supporters has been to offer a mentorship program,” says Annise Montplaisir, president of Amplify Horse Racing and equine education coordinator for the Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP). “Getting involved in the Thoroughbred industry can feel like a winding path without a clear first step. Throughout Amplify's growth and assessment of how best to recruit newcomers, it has become evident that mentorship has had an important role in getting many young professionals and industry leaders involved in the sport. We hope that through the creation of a formal program, we can make that process easier for others.”

Mentorship program applications are available at amplifyhorseracing.org/mentorship.

The Jockey Club (TJC) has launched a formal summer internship program for college students and recent college graduates to help support young people interested in the Thoroughbred industry. The structured program will begin in 2021 with up to three interns and will last eight weeks. The students will be exposed to all companies and departments within the organization with the opportunity to spend additional time in their areas of interest.

“While we have taken on interns in the past, we are excited to offer an official program to educate enthusiastic individuals on the vast operations of The Jockey Club and our contributions to the Thoroughbred breeding and racing industries so that they are set up for success when seeking full-time employment,” said Matt Iuliano, executive vice president and executive director of TJC. “The Jockey Club believes it is important to invest in the future workforce of our industry, which we have committed to through this initiative and our recently expanded academic scholarship offerings.”

The internships will take place in TJC’s offices in Lexington, Ky., and New York, N.Y. Applications are accepted until Feb. 16. For more information, visit TJC’s education page.

Applications for the 2021-2023 in take of trainees for the hugely popular Godolphin Flying Start (GFS) program will be accepted beginning Dec. 1, 2020 and will remain open through Feb. 8, 2021. The online portal has been opened a month earlier than normal to provide applicants additional time in a process that has been more streamlined than ever.

GFS is a two-year international management and leadership program for the Thoroughbred industry and provides its trainees with practical, hands-on work and study experiences in five different countries.

“It is fantastic that we have been able to deliver the first- and second-year course during these unprecedented times,” said Clodagh Kavanagh, executive director of GFS. “Trainees have had many of the same experiences as previous year groups as well as enhanced virtual learning and technology. By August 2021, when the new intake of Godolphin Flying Start trainees are due to commence the course, we will be able to deliver the best of our traditional and of our newly developed training and networking capabilities. We look forward to receiving their applications over the coming months.”
