Group 1 bridesmaid Indigo Girl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) will return to the racecourse on May 2, G1 1000 Guineas Day at Newmarket, trainer John Gosden announced. However, she is not a certain starter in the first fillies' Classic in England, as the Listed Betfair Pretty Polly S. on the Guineas undercard is also under consideration. A winner of her first start at Yarmouth in August, the George Strawbridge homebred followed up with a win in the G2 May Hill S. at Doncaster in September prior to her second in the Oct. 9 G1 Fillies' Mile.

“The plan is to go to Newmarket the first weekend in May and she will be in two races,” Gosden, who trains with his son Thady and enjoyed a Group 1 double in Dubai on Saturday, said. “She is in the 1000 Guineas but she will also be put in the Pretty Polly. We will just see how she is before making a decision but that is the weekend we are training her for.

“She has had a good winter and we are quite happy with her. She has only done half speeds so far and she hasn't done any fast work yet.

“The deciding factor of which route we take will be how she is training at the time. If we have races like the Prix de Diane (French Oaks) in mind and we feel a mile and a quarter will suit her straight away, then we will go for that (Pretty Polly). If she is showing us the natural speed you want for the Guineas, then we would look at that instead.”

Friday’s G1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket was fought out by two elite TDN Rising Stars, with Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}) prevailing by half a length over Indigo Girl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to claim the bragging rights. Runner-up in the Sept. 13 G1 Moyglare Stud S. at The Curragh, John Oxley’s Pretty Gorgeous had been forced to miss Sunday’s G1 Prix Marcel Boussac due to the well-documented feed contamination but confidence remained intact as she traded as the 5-2 favourite. Racing well off the honest tempo as Shane Crosse played the waiting game, the bay who had earlier won the G2 Debutante S. cruised into contention two out and was in front soon after chased by a Ballydoyle runner which was at the time believed to be the 50-1 shot Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Able to see off that Rosegreen representative with relative comfort, she was beyond reach as George Strawbridge’s G2 May Hill S. winner Indigo Girl closed late on. It later transpired that the eventual third, who was the same margin behind, was in fact Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and not Snowfall with the number cloths having been mixed up. “Early on, I wasn’t overly happy and she’s so big she didn’t come down the hill all that great but once I got her balanced and rolling in the last half-furlong it was a case of me getting there too soon,” commented Crosse, who had missed out on G1 St Leger glory last month after a positive COVID-19 test.

Pretty Gorgeous was a rare Rising Star to run at the low-key Irish venue of Bellewstown, but the promise of her five-length defeat of the useful Talacre (Flintshire {GB}) over this trip was there for all to see July 2. Runner-up to Donnacha’s Shale (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G3 Silver Flash S. over the first of three seven-furlong outings when the going was lively at Leopardstown Aug. 6, she turned that form around with ease in the ground when scoring by 2 1/2 lengths in the Debutante at The Curragh Aug. 22 before again coming off second-best to Shale in the Moyglare. “She was very impressive and I’m delighted for everybody at home, for Mr Oxley who was keen to come here and for Justin who bought her,” trainer Joseph O’Brien said. “I thought Shane gave the filly a great ride. He was patient on her and committed when he had to. Shane is a young man, but he is a very good rider–strong and cool in a finish and he doesn’t panic.”

“I was a little bit worried coming here, given that she’d been to France but she was very fresh and in great shape so we thought we’d better take our chance,” he added. “From the first day she worked, she was impressive at home and proved today that she is top-class. The Breeders’ Cup is an option, but it’s more likely she’ll be put away now and trained for a Guineas next Spring. She is a Lawman, so she would not be bred to go very far. I think Lawman’s can get 10 furlongs and I see her more as an eight to 10-furlong filly rather than an Oaks-type filly at this stage.”

John Gosden said of the runner-up, “It was a great run and I’m very happy with her. Her mother won the French St Leger and her sister won a group one over a mile and a half. She will be trained more for a mile and a quarter and middle-distance races. She won’t be trained as a Guineas filly.”

Aidan O’Brien explained the mix-up with his fillies later in the afternoon, telling the Racing Post, “I didn’t see the race live and when I looked at the replay after it was brought to my attention, I could see straight away. I contacted the BHA straight away and let them know what is after happening. We have a team based in England these days because of the coronavirus restrictions, so the problem is the lads that are with the horses at home can’t always go racing with them. I don’t know what to say other than I am so sorry that it happened.”

Pedigree Notes:
Pretty Gorgeous’s listed-placed dam Lady Gorgeous (GB) (Compton Place {GB}), who also produced the Listed Prix Nureyev scorer Alwaab (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}), is kin to the G3 Prix Fille de l’Air third Kartica (GB) (Rainbow Quest) who is in turn the dam of the G1 Coronation S., G1 Prix Rothschild and G2 Duke of Cambridge S. heroine Qemah (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). The listed-winning second dam Cayman Sunset (Ire) (Night Shift), who was also placed in the GII Canadian H. and GIII All Along Breeders’ Cup S., is from the family of the GII Lexington S. and GIII Everglades H. winner Royal Roberto (Roberto). Lady Gorgeous’s colt by Shalaa (Ire) was purchased by Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock for 90,000gns at last year’s Tattersalls December Foal Sale and heads back to that venue to come under the hammer during Tuesday’s session of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2.

Earning TDN Rising Star status on debut when winning over a mile at Yarmouth Aug. 30, George Strawbridge’s Indigo Girl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) made an impressively rapid jump forward to capture Thursday’s G2 bet365 May Hill S. at Doncaster. Held up in last early by Frankie Dettori after an awkward start, the 10-3 second favourite was delivered with an eye-catching move stand’s side to swamp the long-time leader Dubai Fountain (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining. Despite running green in front, the full-sister to the same connections’ group 1 winner Journey (GB) carved out a comfortable 3/4-of-a-length success from that rival, with the 6-5 favourite Zabeel Queen (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) a length further behind in third. “I rode Journey and she’s the same type–not over-big, but she’s got loads of gears,” Dettori said. “She travelled smoothly and quickened well. She ran a bit green and ducked left and right, but it’s only her second start so you can excuse her for that. She’s from a talented family and everything is in the right place. She seems easier to handle than her siblings. She’s got a good future and fingers crossed she can go all the way.”

John Gosden was enjoying a fifth renewal of this Classic pointer and said, “She did it very smoothly at Yarmouth and she’s been in great form since. The race didn’t knock her back a bit–it was rather like a piece of work. If we’d gone for another novice race, she would have had to lump a lot of weight and I don’t like doing that with two-year-olds. You can end up giving seven pounds to a group horse and you don’t know it. The May Hill is a beautiful race over the straight mile. The track is in beautiful nick and I thought we’d bring her here and see if we could nick a bit of black-type. She relaxed beautifully, which is key, and smoothly came through. I admit when she hit the front she ran around, but that’s the trainer’s fault because when I work them at home, I don’t like them bursting clear and breaking another one’s heart.”

Of targets, he added, “She’s obviously got a lot of talent. As long as she continues to enjoy her racing, she can move upward. There are two options this year–the [G1] Prix Marcel Boussac and the [G1] Fillies’ Mile. We could look at either of those or wait until next year, we’ll just have to see at this stage. Her mother won a Prix Royal-Oak and her full-sister won the Fillies & Mares Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot over a mile and a half. Funnily enough, I see this one as more of a mile to a mile-and-a-quarter filly. She travels strong and has a great turn of foot.”

As mentioned by her trainer, Journey captured the 2016 G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. when she beat Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal) by four lengths. Also runner-up in that race the previous year and successful in the G3 Pinnacle S. and second in the 2017 G1 Prix Vermeille, she is out of Montare (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) who took the G1 Prix Royal Oak, G2 Prix de Royallieu and G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris. Her dual listed-winning dam Contare (GB) (Shirley Heights (GB) is also the second dam of Worth Waiting (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), winner of the G2 Dahlia S. and G3 Prix Minerve. Montare’s other black-type performer is Travelling Man (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who was placed in three pattern races including when third in the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville. Her 3-year-old filly Mostly (GB) (Makfi {GB}) has won at Kempton this term, while her yearling filly is also by Dubawi.

Granted a much easier task after the 15-8 market-leader Lucid Dreamer (GB) (Dansili {GB}) refused to enter the stalls, George Strawbridge’s Indigo Girl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) nevertheless cut a real dash on debut as she earned TDN Rising Star status at Yarmouth on Sunday. Due to start the 10-3 second favourite for the Norfolk venue’s British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Novice S. over a mile with Khalid Abdullah’s Lucid Dreamer having registered a promising debut win at Kempton, the full-sister to former celebrity Journey (GB) was slowly away and last of the five remaining runners throughout the early stages. Rab Havlin was cajoling at halfway, but the John Gosden trainee picked up impressively to surge to the lead with 1 1/2 furlongs to race before staying on strongly under hand riding to record a three-length verdict over Final Thought (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), with Mystery Show (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) half a length away in third. “She wears a hood, as she can be a bit lively at home but actually she was really well-behaved today,” her rider commented. “We thought she might do things back-to-front, as her sister used to and it took her a long time to settle, but she was nice and relaxed and there was a lot left in the tank at the end. She was racing behind the bridle, but when I showed her daylight she picked up through the gears and off she went. The ground is a bit dead, but she handled it well and switched off. Her sister was at her best over a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half, so hopefully she’ll get that sort of trip–it’s definitely within her compass if she switches off like she did here.”

Journey, who also sported a hood throughout most of her career, enjoyed her finest hour when beating the high-class Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal) by four lengths in the 2016 G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. She first burst on to the scene when making all in dynamic fashion to take Newmarket’s Listed Princess Royal S. by eight lengths in September 2015 prior to finishing runner-up on her first tilt at Ascot’s Champions Fillies & Mares. She also won the Princess Royal the following season and Haydock’s G3 Pinnacle S. and was second in the 2017 G1 Prix Vermeille, Hwt. Older Mare-Eng at 11-14f, G1SW-Eng, G1SP-Fr, $912,717. The dam Montare (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) captured the 2006 G1 Prix Royal Oak and the G2 Prix de Royallieu and G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris as well as placing in the G1 Prix Vermeille. Her dual listed-winning dam Contare (GB) (Shirley Heights (GB) is also the second dam of Worth Waiting (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), winner of the G2 Dahlia S. and G3 Prix Minerve.

Indigo Girl is Montare’s ninth foal, with the other black-type performer being Travelling Man (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) who was placed in three pattern races including when third in the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville, MGSP-Fr, $127,771. This stable’s 3-year-old filly Mostly (GB) (Makfi {GB}) was recently off the mark at Kempton and has potential, with the family generally needing time to settle down and mature fully. Given how well Montare works with Dubawi, it is no surprise to see her with another yearling filly in the wings.
