“The mission of our auction is to bring together the industry to raise money for numerous causes,” said Christine Cagle, the ITA Stallions and Services Auction Chairperson. “We realize there is a need for more assistance in our state when it comes to facilitating education, boosting promotion, and lifting the industry. Having our auction prior to the holidays is the perfect excuse for some last-minute gift shopping as well as tax deductions prior to the end of the year. This is our one big fundraiser we do, and all of the money goes to a greater good.”

The auction has raised almost $100,000 since 2020, with nearly 90% of that money going back into the Indiana horse industry. The proceeds have funded scholarships, racehorse aftercare, breeder and owner education, the ITA Industry Crisis Fund, and promotional efforts for the Indiana Thoroughbred industry.

“We love having our auction prior to the holidays because it's the perfect excuse for some fun last-minute gift shopping,” says Christine Cagle, the ITA's Stallions and Services Auction Chairperson. “Plus the last-minute tax deductions don't hurt, either.”

Almost all of the money raised goes back into the Indiana Thoroughbred industry. In 2022, the ITA gave back over $30,000 in donations to nonprofits, educational seminars for Indiana horsemen and women and increased marketing campaigns for Indiana-bred horses consigned during the sales season.

“Being that the ITA is a group of men and women whose livelihoods depend on the industry, we are always looking for ways that we can do better to support the industry we love,” says Cagle. “I am so thankful for all the farms and business owners who have supported us through the years.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 326 deadly barn fires occurred during the period 2013-2017. In 2022 a devastating fire hurt the Indiana Thoroughbred breeding industry when one Indiana farm burned to the ground.

In an effort to turn a tragedy into a positive, the ITA will be sharing what has been learned in the aftermath of recent barn fires.

“That's why we chose the topics that are being covered in this seminar, because we learned so much from the fire and had no idea what we didn't know,” said Susan Burger, ITA board member and Thoroughbred farm owner.

Peter Sacopulos, who has specialized in equine and real estate law, will discuss the legal ramifications of a barn fire. Sacopulos is a member of the Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.

The insurance information you didn't know you needed to know will be presented by horsewoman and insurance expert Kim Green with Schuetz Insurance Services. Horse owners will learn about emergency triage and what to do with the animals in the midst of the fire with Denise Fletcher. And, finally, member of ATF and horsewoman Cassandra Jones will share tips on what you can do to prevent and battle barn fires.

Attendees will be treated to lunch on the breezeway of Horseshoe Indianapolis and everyone will eligible for giveaways provided by sponsors such as the ITA, Finish Line Horse Products, the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana, the Indiana Standardbred Association, Murphy Trailer Sales and others.

“When you're faced with a disaster, it's more the aftermath that hits you the hardest,” says ITA board member Christine Cagle, who was faced with such a disaster this past winter. “You feel so alone and drowning. Yet, we're so proud that we don't want to ask for help.”

Last month, Christine and her husband, Vince, hosted a large gathering at Cedar Creek Winery and Brewery in Martinsville, Indiana, as a thank you for all the help and support the couple received when their farm was consumed by a fire. The event highlighted the meaning of family, support and small business, thanks to food donated by Maple Grove Market, a silent auction, pie contest and pie-in-the-face contest. All the proceeds from the afternoon went towards the ITA to help create a crisis fund for the future.

The event raised almost $5,000, a small drop in the bucket for some, but a big boost should someone need it.

“A lot of the small breeders don't have health insurance or sufficient savings, should something happen, which is why we wanted to create something like this,” says Cagle.

More events are in the works to help raise more money for the crisis fund as the ITA board works to develop a plan for applications and distribution.

“Hoosiers are known for their hospitality and making things work, so doing something so we can stand up and say, 'Here's a little bit of something to help ease the pain. How else can we help you?' is just one way we can support each other,” said Tony Wolfe, DVM, president of the ITA.

The barn tour was the first of its type at Indiana Grand since 2019, due to biosecurity and security precautions at the Shelbyville track. Visitors were treated to meeting retired jockey Francisco Torres, winner of more than $68.8 million in lifetime earnings, including 12 graded stakes races. Torres played jockey Braulio Baeza in the ESPN movie “Ruffian” in 2007. Now a jockey's agent at Indiana Grand, Torres shared highlights of his career on and off the track and was open to answering questions.

Fellow retired jockey and movie star, Otto Thorwarth was also on hand for visitors to meet. Thorwarth played jockey Ron Turcotte in the 2010 Disney movie “Secretariat” and returned to Indiana Grand to later become chaplain.

Other speakers included Michael Mann, DVM, track veterinarian at Indiana Grand, Steele and Nate Brannin, managing partner of B&B Stables, a fractional ownership group based out of Indiana.

“I just wanted to give others the opportunity to be on the backside to see what all goes into taking care of these horses,” says Brannin, one of the organizers of the event.

“After a year of restrictions and shutdowns, it was so nice to be amongst the horses and sharing the passion of Hoosier horsemen and women with the fans,” says Christine Cagle, board member of the ITA. “We are very thankful to Indiana Grand and the Indiana Horse Racing Commission for allowing us to host this event.”

Participants were able to feed sweet potatoes to the horses in Steele's barn, take photos with the horses and ask questions varying from the daily routine of racehorses and the track vet's role to how they can become more involved in the industry.

“I believe there are a lot of potential racehorse owners out there, but they just don't know how to get involved,” says Brannin. “I hope this helps spark more interest.”

“Before I became a trainer, I never even thought about being in the horse racing industry,” says Steele, who stepped out on her own as a trainer in 2018 and has earned nearly $925,000 so far. “But after attending a backside barn tour like this and seeing what it was like, I fell in love. And here I still am.”

One lucky attendee had their name drawn for a free VIP experience at Cedar Creek Winery, a staunch supporter of Indiana horse racing, where employees are co-owners with Indiana-bred mare Drinkatthecreek with Michael Lauer Racing. The ITA hopes to offer more opportunities like this in the future, as well as continue their education series this fall and winter by offering more webinars and seminars on a variety of horse husbandry topics.
