After 364 days and stops in Kentucky, Arizona, Florida and New York, the Horse Racing Women's Summit (HRWS) returned to Santa Anita Park Sept. 29 with over 150 women from 13 states and Canada gathered for the second Horse Racing Women's Summit.

“What a difference a year makes,” said HRWS Chairwoman, Stephanie Hronis. “We can't thank our community enough for their participation and investment in the Horse Racing Women's Summit movement. One of the things that we are most proud of is that over 10% of our attendees this year are here because of Pay It Forward scholarship tickets. Those are made possible by our generous sponsors and individuals who want to be sure that this event is accessible to all. We look forward to growing that percentage in the future. Generous support from 1/ST and FANDUEL TV led a total of 31 sponsors that made the extraordinary event possible.”

On Friday morning, over 50 HRWS attendees gathered again for an opportunity to have roundtable discussions with the goal of identifying a 2024 'Pillar of Priority' that will guide the HRWS efforts in the next year. Collective think tanks, attendee surveys, and a brand new membership platform are all key ways the HRWS is already empowering individuals in racing to contribute to the advancement of women in the industry.

A breakfast buffet on the clubhouse porch is available, but must be purchased separately from the HRWS ticket. Attendees will reconvene at the racetrack for an afternoon of racing in the climate- controlled Paddock Suite.

Tickets to the Aug. 3rd HRWS Meet Up at Saratoga are limited. Donations to the backstretch women's event can also be made via the EventBrite page.

The HRWS is also partnering with the New York Race Track Chaplaincy and The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation to host a gathering for the women of Saratoga's backstretch community under the Marylou Whitney Pavilion on Tuesday, Aug. 8. The HRWS will proudly match individual, tax-deductible contributions towards this Saratoga backstretch event to $1,500.

A native of New Orleans, Goldstein had an early introduction to the racetrack through her father, a writer and reporter with the Times-Picayune newspaper. She attended the University of Kentucky and Louisiana State University. Following graduation, she was hired to work in the publicity department at the Fair Grounds. She later worked in the publicity departments at Laurel, Pimlico, Monmouth Park, Hialeah, and Keeneland racetracks, as well as serving on the special Kentucky Derby “notes team” at Churchill Downs from 1970 to 1976. She also wrote freelance articles for various racing publications.

In 1972, Goldstein met Alan Balch, who was then director of public relations at Santa Anita Park. In 1975, Balch hired her as assistant news director at Santa Anita, promoting her to director of publicity in 1976. The first woman in the country to head a track publicity department, she continued to run the publicity and communications arm of Santa Anita until her retirement in 1998.

“Since Jane first joined Santa Anita, what has stood out most to me is her commitment to excellence in all things, both journalistically and in the sport,” said Balch. “Her unceasingly high standards serve as an exemplar for all of us.”

In 1984, Goldstein was named the venue press chief for the equestrian sports of the Olympics Games at Santa Anita and Fairbanks Ranch. She was also the first woman to serve on the selection committee of the Thoroughbred Racing Association's Grantland Rice Memorial Scholarship at Vanderbilt University, granted to a young man or woman interested in sports journalism. In 1985 she was inducted into the Fair Grounds press box hall of fame. Goldstein currently serves as a trustee of the California Thoroughbred Foundation, a non-profit corporation dedicated to the advancement of equine research and education.

Thursday kicks off with a keynote address from Susan Packard, author, speaker, former board member of Churchill Downs, Inc., and media entrepreneur. The day
will continue with three panels addressing current events and offering meaningful takeaways for attendees. Each panel will end with a Q&A session allowing for audience engagement.

Friday morning, which also is the opening day of Santa Anita's 2022 Autumn meeting, attendees are invited to a handicapping seminar with TVG's Christina Blacker and will also have the opportunity to attend the charitable Safety Net Foundation's Fashionable Fillies luncheon event in the Chandelier Room (discounted luncheon tickets available for HRWS attendees).

Additionally, HRWS attendees will have access to a reserved section of box seats for the opening weekend of racing at Santa Anita, featuring two Breeders' Cup Win and You're In races.
