EVERWIN (FR) (c, 2, Seabhac–Quatuor {Ire}, by Kodiac {GB}) settled off the pace in a midfield eighth for most of this debut. Making smooth headway along the far-side rail once into the straight, the 47-10 chance quickened to the front approaching the final furlong and was pushed clear in the closing stages to easily account for Spirit Grey (Fr) (Charm Spirit {Ire}), by an impressive 3 1/2 lengths, becoming the first winner for his freshman sire (by Scat Daddy). Everwin is the latest of five foals and third scorer produced by a multiple-winning granddaughter of G3 Prix de Saint-Georges victrix Maybe Forever (GB) (Zafonic), herself a half-sister to MG1SW sire Court Masterpiece (GB) (Polish Precedent). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, €9,000. Video, sponsored by TVG.

France's racing and breeding community is in mourning following the passing of Larissa Kneip, breeder, trainer, sales consignor, and the owner of Haras de Saint Arnoult, who died suddenly at home on Tuesday. She was 51.

Originally from Luxembourg, Kneip gave up a career in broadcast journalism to pursue a life with horses, settling near the town of Exmes, where she ran her picturesque Normandy farm in tirelessly successful fashion while wearing a number of different hats.

Active in all divisions of the sales market, from foals to breezers, she also stood a roster of five stallions, including Elarqam (GB), the Group 2-winning son of Frankel (GB) and Attraction (GB). A licensed trainer and pre-trainer, she was represented by her final winner, Charlotte Tagada (Fr), at Chantilly on May 16, while Haras de Saint Arnoult sold a draft of eight 2-year-olds at last week's BBAG Breeze-up Sale in Baden-Baden.

Multi-lingual and ever the enthusiast on all facets of the Thoroughbred, Kneip explained her various roles in an interview in TDN in 2020.

“Haras de Saint Arnoult is a bit of peculiar stud,” she said. “We don't really specialise in one particular thing but we are really trying to produce racehorses and we are producing them right from the start. What do you need to breed a horse? A mare and a stallion: well, we've got mares and we've got stallions. What do you do with the foals? You can either send them to the sales as yearlings or to the breeze-up sales as 2-year-olds, which we have also been doing quite successfully, or you can send them racing.

“I always felt that it was a bit frustrating if you had gone through so much pain and effort to raise them and then they leave and it's up to somebody else to do their racing career, so I decided to take out my trainer's licence so I could follow through with the horses myself until they go racing.”

Kneip's fellow Normandy stud farmer Julian Ince of Haras du Logis paid tribute to his close friend.

He said, “Larissa was passionate about her horses, about her people, and about striving for success. She loved the game and set herself many challenges that most of us wouldn't set ourselves. She will be sadly missed as she was one of a kind and she was a really good friend to so many people.”

“Mkfancy was an impressive 2-year-old, not only physically, although he was strong and sound, but above all– and this was his real strength–he had the mind of a warrior,” said Kneip.

Group 1 winner Way To Paris (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) has his first mares scanned in foal, Coolagown Stud announced on Monday. The winner of the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud covered Cliff Avenue (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}), herself out of G3 Prix de Lutece victress Street Shaana (Fr) (Darshaan {GB}); Greatest Dancer (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), a half-sister to stakes-placed Perfect Casting (Diesis {GB}); and MSW Trip To Glory (Fr) (Where Or When {Ire})'s daughter Wadacre (GB) (Camelot {GB}), with the trio carrying to the charismatic grey.

“Way To Paris has settled into his new home and taken to his job very well, and is showing particularly good libido,” said Coolagown's David Stack. “He has proven very popular and has a high number of bookings, which isn't surprising as he's a big, good-walking horse. Everyone who has seen him has loved him.”

Also a winner of a brace of Group 2s, Way To Paris stands for €3,500 at Coolagown in 2021.

Another first-season sire with his first mares in foal is Group 3 hero Yafta (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) at Haras de Saint Arnoult. Idiosa (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), from the family of German Group 1 winner Temida (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}); and the French stakes-placed Marvellous Night (Fr) (Captain Marvelous {Ire}) were both scanned in foal, the stud announced on Monday.

“It's surprising to see that a new stallion such as Yafta, who is one could say a “budget” sire, manages to attract mares of such high quality for his first covering season,” said Haras de Saint Arnoult's Larissa Kneip of the €2,500 first-season sire. “There is quantity, with over 50 bookings by now, as well as quality. Yafta has got the looks, the pedigree and the performances which a speed sire needs all rolled into one-and that attracts breeders more and more here in France.”

The first mare covered by Elarqam (GB) at Haras de Saint-Arnoult has been tested in foal. Calima Mon Amour (Fr) (Shirocco {Ger}), already the dam of the Group 3-placed and listed winner Mascha (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), has been scanned in foal on a single cover after delivering a foal by another young Saint-Arnoult stallion, Seabhac. She also has a yearling colt by Almanzor (Fr).

Elarqam, a Group 2-winning son of two Guineas winners in Frankel (GB) and Attraction (GB) (Efisio {GB}), joined Haras de Saint-Arnoult in Normandy at the end of last year along with Yafta (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

Stud owner Larissa Kneip said of Elarqam, “Bookings are still going on as we speak, so we're hoping to reach our 'target' of 100-plus mares by next month. Elarqam is so very professional in the covering shed, you would hardly believe he's a young sire doing his very first season. He's very calm, yet with good libido and an excellent technique, I've never had an easier young stallion to deal with.”

MGSW Elarqam (GB) (Frankel {GB}-Attraction {GB}, by Efisio {GB}), who ran third in the G1 Juddmonte International in 2019 for Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell, has been retired and will stand at Haras de Saint Arnoult in partnership with Shadwell next year. The three-time group winner will command €6,000. The partnership to stand the dark bay son of Classic heroine Attraction was brokered by Richard Venn.

“We are extremely excited to be standing Elarqam in France from next season, in partnership with Haras de Saint Arnoult,” said Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster. “He was a prolific racehorse having won or placed in group races at two, three, four, and five years old. In an industry that is centred around genetics, the quality of his pedigree speaks for itself.”

Bred by Floors Farming, the colt was snapped up by Shadwell for 1.6 million gns out of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and sent to the yard of Mark Johnston. A winner of his debut at York, he captured the G3 Somerville S. next out. At three, he added a group placing in the G2 York S., and went two better at four, taking the York S. outright, one start prior to his Group 1 placing in the Juddmonte International, as well as two listed stakes wins. Kept in training this term, from four starts he added the G3 Legacy Cup at Newbury in September and was a nose second in the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. earlier in the season. Rated at 120, he retires with a mark of 17-6-1-3 and $462,032 in earnings.

“We are absolutely delighted to be able to get such an exciting stallion,” added Haras de Saint Arnoult’s Larissa Kneip. “He’s got the looks, the pedigree, and he’s proven on the racetrack that he’s not just a “specialist” in a particular restricted field, but a proper racehorse, able to adapt to any distance, any tactics, at any age, and deliver top-class performances with great regularity.”

Elarqam’s dam struck four times at the highest level, including the G1 1000 Guineas and Irish equivalent, and has already thrown the MGSP Cushion (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and G3 Sapphire S. hero Fountain of Youth (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

Elarqam will be joined at stud by GSW and fellow newcomer Yafta (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}-Swiss Dream {GB}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) at €2,500. The former Shadwell runner was purchased from Shadwell through Richard Venn, with breeding rights available.

“Yafta has been bought from Shadwell through agent Richard Venn by an owner of mine who has been wanting to invest in a speed sire for a while now, but it was hard to find the right profile,” said Kneip. “It’s the type of stallion that was missing from our roster here at Haras de Saint Arnoult, and the type of sire that we are in desperate need of here in France.”

A £280,000 yearling from the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, the Lordship Stud-bred won the G3 Hackwood S. as a sophomore and was also placed another three times a group level for Richard Hannon and Shadwell. The 5-year-old’s record stands at $181,511 with four wins and eight placings from 18 starts. Yafta is out of three-time listed winner Swiss Dream, herself a half-sister to French MGSW Swiss Diva (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), Group 3 winner and sire Swiss Spirit (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the MGSP Swiss Franc (GB) (Mr. Greeley). The quartet were produced by MSW and G2 Flying Childers S. runner-up Swiss Lake (Indian Ridge {Ire}).
