Saturday, July 15, 2023
3rd-HAK, ¥10,480,000 ($76k), Maiden, 3yo, 1200mT
MERITITES (f, 3, American Pharoah–Gem Gem, by Tapit) was well beaten on Hanshin debut over seven grassy furlongs June 18, but improved markedly to finish a close third over this course and distance July 2. A $140,000 purchase by J S Company out of the 2021 Keeneland September Sale, the bay filly is out of a winning half-sister to 2009 GI Alabama S. winner Careless Jewel, whose mercurial daughter Reframe (American Pharoah) was a listed winner on the turf last summer at Tokyo. On behalf of Charles Fipke, R. J. Bennett went to $625,000 for Gem Gem in foal to Uncle Mo at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. B-Charles Fipke (KY)

3rd-CKO, ¥10,480,000 ($76k), Maiden, 3yo, 1400m
VAN VISTA (f, 3, Justify–Vanquished, by Empire Maker) failed to land any sort of blow when down the field in a nine-furlong newcomers' event on turf at Hanshin last December and switches to a dirt sprint for her first start since. Though the dam produced a pair of talented turf horses in the form of MGSW Takeover Target (Harlan's Holiday) and SW Ladies' Privilege (Harlan's Holiday)–the dam of recent GIII Manila S. winner More Than Looks (More Than Ready)–Van Vista hails from the deeper family of dirt MGISW Critical Eye (Dynaformer). Van Vista was bought back on a bid of $285,000 at KEENOV in 2020, but was another JS Company purchase at KEESEP the next fall, hammering for $525,000. B-Forging Oaks Farm (KY)

Saturday, July 8, 2023
3rd-CKO, ¥10,480,000 ($72k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800m
CUPIDON (c, 3, American Pharoah–Chocolate Pop, by Cuvee), a half-brother to the versatile MGSW & GISP Airoforce (Colonel John), finished midfield in two tries over this distance at Hanshin last year and made his seasonal return with a runner-up effort in a 1400-meter allowance at Urawa on the NAR circuit June 1. A $300,000 purchase by Kokhi Maeda out of the 2021 Keeneland September sale, the gray would become a 31st Japanese winner for his Triple Crown-winning sire. Springhouse Farm acquired the multiple stakes-placed Chocolate Pop in foal to Bernardini for $460,000 at Keeneland January in 2017. B-Camas Park Stud & Lynch Bages Ltd (KY)

Sunday, July 9, 2023
1st-HAK, ¥10,480,000 ($72k), Maiden, 2yo, 1000m
BUSHIN (c, 2, Into Mischief–Flawless, by Mr. Greeley), the full-brother to Horse of the Year Authentic, switches to a minimum trip on the dirt for this third go, having finished a debut third at a mile on the grass June 3 and second over six furlongs at this venue June 24 (see below, SC 8). Flawless was offered with this colt in utero at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton November Sale days after Authentic's championships-clinching victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic, but was retained by Peter Blum after bidding reached $4.1 million. Bushin fetched $800,000 at Keeneland September last fall and the mare has since foaled a pair of Into Mischief fillies for Blum. B-Peter E Blum Thoroughbreds LLC (KY)

DONA NOBLE (f, 2, Medaglia d'Oro–Gender Agenda {GB}, by Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) cost JS Company $200,000 at last year's Keeneland September Sale and is out of a mare who upset the GIII Robert J. Frankel S. in 2015 for Carla Gaines and owners Keith Brackpool, Alon Ossip and Tim Ritvo. Gender Agenda changed hands for $80,000 at Keeneland November last fall and produced a filly by Violence this season. ECORO GAIA (c, 2, Speightstown–Charge of Angels, by Distorted Humor) is a full-brother to the stakes-placed Winning Number and is out of an unraced daughter of the outstanding producer She's A Winner (A.P. A $120,000 Keeneland September purchase, Ecoro Gaia is the 50th Japanese starter for this sire and looks to become his 42nd winner. Charge of Angels was purchased by Chad Schumer in foal to Charlatan for $40,000 at KEENOV last fall. B-Spry Family Farm (KY)

J. Bennett on behalf of breeder Charles Fipke for $625,000 in foal to Uncle Mo at the 2016 KEENOV sale. The pensioned Careless Jewel is the dam of Reframe (American Pharoah), who made up for some single-minded ways to become a listed winner of over $670,000 in Japan. B-Charles Fipke (KY)

5th-HAK, ¥13,720,000 ($96k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT
The stakes-placed All in Fun, a sister to MGSP Tight Ten, was purchased by Winchester Farm for $125,000 with this colt in utero at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale and has since been exported to Japan, where she foaled a Justify filly in 2021.
Saturday, June 18, 2022
3rd-HAK, ¥9,900,000 ($75k), Maiden, 3yo, 1000m
GLUTTON LASSIE (f, 3, American Pharoah–Brassy Lassie, by City Zip) was crunched into 7-10 favoritism for a 1400-meter Tokyo maiden last Nov. 20, but never landed a serious blow in seventh and makes her return to the races over the minimum trip Saturday. A $40K Keeneland September yearling, the February-foaled bay was knocked down for $350K at last year's OBS March Sale after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat. Glutton Lassie is the only live foal to date for her dam, a half-sister to 2015 GIII Jefferson Cup S. winner Saham (Lemon Drop Kid). The filly's stakes-winning third dam Ticket to Houston (Houston) produced GSW/MGISP Runway Model (Petionville), the dam of four-time 'TDN Rising Star' Grade I winner and current Gainesway stallion McKinzie (Street Sense). B-Fleur de Lis Stable & Ashford Stud (KY)

8th-HSN, ¥14,670,000 ($111k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1800m
CORDON ROUGE (f, 3, American Pharoah–Champagne Room, by Broken Vow) just failed at odds-on going this distance on Chukyo debut Mar. 13, but got it right last time, carrying the visiting Damian Lane to a popular four-length graduation at that same track and trip (see below, SC 10). The bay is the first foal from her dam, who secured an Eclipse Award with a victory in the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Champagne Room's Japan-based 3-year-old half-brother Fidele (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) was third at Group 3 level last term and is listed-placed this season. B-Northern Farm (KY)

Cavale Doree was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for 650,000gns ($883,272) with this colt in utero at the 2019 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. B-Northern Racing

FIFTY CHEVY (c, 2, Tapit–Stopchargingmaria {MGISW, $3,014,000}, by Tale of the Cat), an $825,000 purchase out of last year's Keeneland September sale, made the majority of the pace in his June 13 debut going this distance at Tokyo before retreating in the final 200 meters to finish fourth. Better than a 10-1 chance for this second go, the beautifully bred bay was away only fairly from gate 11 and raced with just two rivals behind as they hit the first turn. Unhappy with his mount's positioning behind a slow pace, jockey Takeshi Yokoyama boldly hit the gas with about 5 1/2 furlongs to travel, allowing Fifty Chevy to stride into the lead at the 800-meter pole. Nursed along on the turn, Fifty Chevy responded gamely when set down in upper stretch and began looking for the line in the final 50 meters, but got there with a half-length to spare. Winner of the 2014 GI CCA Oaks and GI Alabama S. for owner Mike Repole, Stopchargingmaria was a $3.15-million buyback at that year's FTKNOV sale before being purchased privately by Louise and Kiki Courtelis' Town and Country Farms. Upset winner of the 2015 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff, the mare remained in training through her 5-year-old season and was knocked down to Three Chimneys for $2.8 million at FTKNOV in 2016. She was most recently acquired by Whisper Hill Farm for $4.4 million with this foal in utero at the 2018 FTKNOV sale. Three-year-old filly Stillchargingmaria (Pioneerof the Nile), a $1.9-million graduate of FTKNOV and her dam's first produce, won her maiden at Lone Star Park this past April and added a July 5 allowance, both on turf. Stopchargingmaria is the dam of a yearling full-brother to Fifty Chevy and a filly foal by Quality Road. The winning owner also campaigns Vanishing Point (Tapit), the full-brother to multiple champion Unique Bella, who cost $1.5 million at KEESEP in 2019. Sales history: $825,000 Ylg '20 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, $55,856.
FIFTY CHEVY (c, 2, Tapit–Stopchargingmaria, by Tale of the Cat), a debut fourth going this distance at Tokyo June 13 (video, gate 2), attracted a final bid of $825K last fall at Keeneland September from Yuji Hasegawa, the same owner who gave $1.5 million for Vanishing Point, a full-brother to two-time Eclipse Award winner Unique Bella, at the same auction 12 months prior. POISON ARROW (c, 2, Arrogate–Crosswinds, by Storm Cat) fetched $750K at last year's Keeneland September sale, making him the most expensive of 41 of the late stallion (by Unbridled's Song)'s first-crop yearlings to sell (from 59 through the ring) in 2020. The Mar. 31 foal is a half-brother to $725K KEESEP grad Current (Curlin), a Grade III winner on turf as a juvenile, and to Weep No More (Mineshaft), who upset the 2016 GI Central Bank Ashland S. The chestnut's granddam is Juddmonte's Flute (Seattle Slew), winner of the 2001 GI Kentucky Oaks and GI Alabama S. and subsequently the dam of Filimbi (Mizzen Mast), a Grade III winner and four times placed in Grade I company on the grass. “We were really happy when he was so well accepted,” Hinkle Farms' Henry Hinkle told the TDN's Brian DiDonato after the colt's sale. “We got a lot of compliments on him. He's one of the nicest colts we've ever brought up here to sell.” Filimbi is also responsible for a member of Arrogate's first crop, the 2-year-old colt Calloway Peak, who is in training at Saratoga. B-Hinkle Farms (KY)

The progeny of the WinStar stallion have long been coveted in Japan, as he is the sire to date of 33 winners from 37 starters, including GISW mare Mozu Superflare; Matera Sky, a Group 3 winner at home, runner-up in the 2019 G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen and twice an unlucky loser of the Saudi Sprint; and three additional black-type winners. B-John D Gunther Eurowest Bloodstock & Tony Chedraoui (KY)
