Bregman Family Racing made its debut on the racetrack a winning one just last May when the first horse to carry the family's colors, Cadillac Candy (Twirling Candy), graduated at Churchill Downs.

The family's focus will still be on racing, according to Ciaran Dunne, whose Wavertree Stables preps Bregman's horses in Ocala, but the reoffered lots reflect a slight adjustment for the three-year-old stable.

“Alex made the decision to sell a few colts to try to finance his racing stable,” Dunne said. “I think he's decided that racing fillies is probably, in his grand scheme of things, going to be a better plan. He wants to develop a broodmare band and sort of have a long-term plan of action. By selling the colts, it helps finance some of the racing stable and the broodmare band. That's not to say he won't race a colt going forward, but, if he races fillies, he wants to own them 100% and he'll partner on colts with the hope of making a stallion. We have three in the sale for him here and if the right people with the right plan came along, I am sure he would be more than willing to stay in and be a partner.”

Hip 332, an Irish-bred son of No Nay Never, was purchased on behalf of Bregman by bloodstock agent Mike Akers for €180,000 at last year's Arqana August Yearling Sale. He is the first foal out of group winner Etoile (War Front), who is a full-sister to group winner and multiple Group 1-placed Ancient Rome.

“We got him in October or November sometime,” Dunne said of the colt. “It took him a little while to get his feet underneath him. It's a long process between shipping and quarantine and everything else. But ever since, he's been a really straightforward horse. His works have been more than solid coming into this. So we went in there with high expectations and I think he delivered. He's just a really solid colt by probably one of the top stallions in Europe.”

On behalf of the Bregman family, Wavertree will also send out a colt by Twirling Candy (hip 402) to work Tuesday and a son of Omaha Beach (hip 617) to work Wednesday.

“He absolutely loves the horse business,” Dunne said of Bregman. “It will be bittersweet for him. Racing is his first love. Pinhooking is probably going to be very hard for him. But we've had the discussion, 'look if you bring them over, you have to sell them.' So I think he will. But, like I said, if someone were to come along, I think he would be more than happy to stay in.”

Four horses shared Monday's fastest furlong time of :9 4/5. A filly by Flameaway (hip 177, video) worked the bullet for David McKathan and Jody Mihalic's Grassroots Training and Sales just minutes after the session's 8 a.m. start time. Out of Cinnamon Girl (Meadowlake), the chestnut filly was purchased by Grassroots for $15,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

Consignor Marcial Galan sent out a colt by Jimmy Creed (hip 239, video) to share the fastest furlong time Monday around 10:30 a.m. Out of Days Like This (Congrats), the juvenile was bred by Jason Hall, Stephen Baker, Herschel Martindale and Mike Riordan.

A colt by Triple Crown winner Justify (hip 299, video), who is out of D'Wildcat Speed (Forest Wildcat) and is a half-brother to multiple Group 1 winner Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy), gave Jonathan Navas's Navas Equine its first :9 4/5 work when he hit the track around 10:40 a.m. Monday morning.

“I am very fortunate to have such a nice individual under my care,” Navas said. “He is an easy colt to work with. He is that kind that goes out there, puts in a lot of effort in training, does his best in the morning, and then comes back to the stall. Rest and repeat.”

Navas picked the well-bred colt out of the back ring at Keeneland last September and purchased him as part of a pinhooking partnership for $50,000.

“I saw him in the back ring, but I didn't inspect him at the barn,” Navas said. “His page is obviously really strong. And I liked the way he was taking everything in at the sale. We liked what I thought I could polish and develop a little bit more with training.”

Asked if he was surprised to get the colt at that price last fall, Navas said, “Yes, to be honest, it was a little bit surprising. With that pedigree, I would have thought I would have had to extend my budget a little bit more. He didn't look as athletic as he does now. He had a belly and he was a little bit narrow as a yearling. But with the time and training, he became a better-looking athlete. That's what I visualized last year and I think that's what we have right now.”

From a racing family in Venezuela, Navas launched his consignment in 2020. He was represented by a Shackleford filly who worked a quarter-mile bullet in :20 3/5 at the 2021 OBS June sale. Purchased for $7,500 at the 2020 Keeneland September sale, the filly sold for $70,000 that June. Now named Join the Dance, she resold for $110,000 at last year's Keeneland Horses of Racing Age Sale and is two-time stakes-placed.

“This is my third year consigning and I had never had a :9 4/5 before,” Navas said of hip 299's work Monday. “He was able to put up this great workout for us and am I very happy with it. It was pretty impressive.”

A colt by Twirling Candy (hip 192, video), consigned by Steve Venosa's SGV Thoroughbreds, completed the quartet of bullet workers shortly before noon Monday. Out of Conquest Babayaga (Uncle Mo), the dark bay was bred by St. Elias Stables and RNA'd for $120,000 at Keeneland September last fall.

The colt was the second from the SGV Thoroughbreds to turn in a :9 4/5 work this week at OBS. A filly by Flameway (hip 37, video) hit that mark for the consignment Sunday.

The final sets of Sunday's initial session of the under-tack show had horses working into a headwind, but it was the earlier sets Monday that had to deal with the wind, according to Dunne.

“All the way through the first set and through the second set, there was a pretty good headwind and then it seemed to get quieter towards the end of the day,” Dunne said. “We had a horse go :10 1/5 in the last set, so I think the track has been consistent the whole way through, which is all we can ask.”

The under-tack show continues through Saturday with sessions beginning daily at 8 a.m. The Spring sale will be held next Tuesday through Friday. Bidding commences each day at 10:30 a.m.

OCALA, FL – The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds, which had already surpassed its record gross during Thursday's penultimate session, powered straight through to the finish Friday, concluding with new highwater marks for average and median, as well as gross. At the end of four days of selling, 707 head had grossed $91,984,000. The previous record gross, set just last year, was $73,907,900. The average of $130,105 and median of $65,000 were well ahead of previous marks of $108,903 and $60,000, both set in 2019.

During the 2021 Spring sale, 724 juveniles grossed $73,874,900 for an average of $102,037 and a median of $50,000.

“It was a heck of a horse sale,” OBS Director of Sales Tod Wojciechowski said at the close of business Friday. “There were gains and records on all fronts. And, I believe, it's the first time we've ever sold at least one million-dollar horse on every day. You can't say enough about the quality of horses that the consignors brought and the buying bench that showed up, across the board–internationally and domestically. There was great participation on all fronts.”

Friday's final session of the Spring sale was topped by a filly by Munnings who became the auction's fifth seven-figure juvenile when selling for $1.6 million to Larry Best's OXO Equine. The sale's overall top price came during Tuesday's first session when a colt by Uncle Mo sold to Amr Zedan for $2.3 million. It was the first time the Spring sale had produced a sale over $2 million since 2017.

“April has become the go-to 2-year-old sale,” Wojciechowski said. “It's proven itself over and over again. Horses go win all over the world, over all different surfaces, and there is quite an array of different levels for them to shop.”

De Meric sales was the leading consignor at the Spring sale, selling 35 juveniles for $9,308,000, followed by Eddie Woods, who sold 28 head for $8,444,000, including Friday's session topper.

“I thought at the March sale, I had never sold in a market like it before,” Woods said. “Ten years ago, if you told someone there would be half a dozen seven-figure horses in the April sale, they'd lock you up. It used to be just a sale, but it's grown and grown and grown. It's the [Keeneland] September [Yearling] Sale of 2-year-old sales. It's fabulous.”

Chad Schumer was the Spring sale's leading buyer, purchasing 15 head for $3,030,000. The success of the April sale reflects a worldwide demand for horses, according to Schumer.

“I do some pinhooking in Europe at the breeze-up sales and we sold in Dubai, I think the same thing is true everywhere. People want horses,” Schumer said. “We are out of COVID now, people want to get back to life and enjoy themselves. They want to spend money. And in the U.S., the prices are justified by the purses. There are $100,000 maidens at Keeneland, Churchill and New York. California is not far behind and I understand Louisiana is going to jump up. And Kentucky Downs is $130,000. You buy a horse here for $250,000 and you win two races and you're out. It's never been like that before. So people really have a chance.”

Schumer continued, “I also think–with all due respect to some of the big buyers of the past–they are not buying as much as in the past and I think a lot of people, especially in America, feel like they have a real chance to buy what they want. If you look at the results sheets, there is a deep bench of buyers. It's not one person or one country, it's a very diverse buying bench. And they've done a wonderful job putting this catalogue together. There is something here for everyone.”

Woods and Munnings, a Winning Combination

Eddie Woods was quite successful with Munnings fillies last year. He sold now-Grade I winner Eda for $550,000 at the OBS March Sale and sold undefeated G3 UAE Oaks victress Shahama for $425,000 at last term's April sale. The horseman hit another homerun courtesy of a Munnings filly Friday when Hip 1174, a $250,000 KEESEP buy, summoned a whopping $1.6-million from OXO Equine's Larry Best. Bloodstock agent Christina Jelm acted on behalf of Best, who was not in attendance.

“Munnings has obviously been very good to me over the years,” said Woods. “He is a great stallion and has been appreciated in recent years. That filly was amazing. I was shocked at what she brought to be quite honest. I thought she'd get to $1 million, but here comes Larry Best, and when he wants one, he wants one. She is the only 2-year-old he bought this year and I hope she turns out for him. He's a great client of mine anyway. He kind of snuck in under the radar. I didn't see him coming.”

Jelm preferred to remain out of the spotlight, deferring comments on the filly to Best, but did say, “She's tall, elegant, fast and eye-catching. Larry wanted her, and I was just helping him out.”

Bred by the Cantrell Family Partnership, Hip 1174 is out of hard-knocking, six-time Louisiana stakes winner Tensas Harbor (Private Vow). The flashy chestnut breezed in a swift :9 4/5 for Woods during the under-tack show.

“She's a wonderful filly,” Woods said. “She's been a class act from day one, from the first time I looked at her in Lexington at Woodford. I've been lucky buying off Woodford, too. It's been a pretty good journey.”

Hip 1174 was the second seven-figure seller for Woods this week, following Thursday's $1.7-million Tapit colt (Hip 885). —@CDeBernardisTDN

Filly Justifies Buy-Back

A filly by Justify (hip 1139), who was bought back by breeder Diamond Creek Farm for $325,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October sale, sold for $800,000 when returned to the ring at OBS Friday. Bloodstock agent Chad Schumer, acting on behalf of an undisclosed client, made the winning bid on the juvenile.

“Obviously, it's the first crop of a Triple Crown winner,” Schumer said. “Of course they are going to be in demand. He is the son of a sire of sires, unbeaten, there is so much excitement about his first crop. The filly was absolutely lovely. She had a great breeze (:21 1/5), a great physical, and she vetted well.”

The gray filly is out of Susie's Baby (Giant's Causeway) and her 5-year-old half-sister Family Way (Uncle Mo) recently won the GIII Orchid S. at Gulfstream Park.

Hip 1139 was consigned by Wavertree Stables on behalf of Adam Bowden's Diamond Creek Farm.

“Mike Akers bought her back for Diamond Creek Farm,” Wavertree's Ciaran Dunne explained of the yearling result. “They thought she would be a better 2-year-old than she was a yearling. Obviously they were right.”

Susie's Baby, in foal to Constitution, sold for $600,000 at this year's Keeneland January sale.

Hip 1139 is another in a line of juvenile sales success stories who had originally been targeted at the yearling sales.

“I think that breeders are getting smarter about the type of horse that they retain,” Dunne said. “For the longest time, they had the preconceived notion that small, quick horses would be perfect for the 2-year-old sales. And I think some of them have now realized that we need two-turn type horses. I think they are being more selective about what they send and I think that's why you are seeing the better results.”

Schumer, bidding on behalf of the same client, purchased a colt by Goldencents (hip 546) for $535,000 during the second session of the Spring sale. After that Wednesday purchase, Schumer said he hoped the competitive market he was buying into continued Thursday when he would be selling.

Asked Friday how the change of hats went, Schumer said, “I sold really well. I was a little shocked by how well we sold. We had a Malibu Moon (hip 924) we bought for $30,000 as a yearling [at Keeneland September] and we knew he would sell well. He was a lovely colt and a great mover and he was well-prepared by the consignor. But [the $330,000 sale] was literally about double what I expected.” @JessMartiniTDN

Desormeaux & Gase Stay Busy in Ocala

After his first racehorse Call Me Midnight (Midnight Lute) (an $80,000 OBSMAR buy) put him on the GI Kentucky Derby trail with a win in the GIII Lecomte S. earlier this year, new owner Ben Gase was eager to tackle this year's juvenile sales. His trainer Keith Desormeaux represented him in Ocala this week, securing three horses, topped by a $650,000 daughter of Bolt d'Oro (Hip 1017).

“I'm usually the guy buying the ones under the radar,” said Desormeaux. “Ben Gase is a new, very excited owner. He bought his first horse last year at the March Sale, a horse called Call Me Midnight, who was on the Derby trail. He really got excited about it, enthusiastic, and decided to open up his checkbook.”

Desormeaux is typically seen shopping more of the bargain buys. His other purchases for Gase this week were a $90,000 Cairo Prince colt (Hip 252) and a $400,000 Twirling Candy filly (Hip 641).

When asked if he had expected to spend this much on Hip 1017, Desormeaux said, “Hell no! I thought she'd bring $200,000 or $300,000. To double that, is a stretch, but Ben told me, 'Don't come home without her.' I'm usually very conservative, but she was so nice, I had to stretch for her.”

Bred by Spendthrift Farm, Hip 1017 is out of Australian MSW & MGSP Scorpio Queen (Aus) (Choisir) and hails from the family of Aussie G1SW Toledo. The bay breezed in :9 4/5 for the de Merics.

“That's the easiest buy I've ever made,” Desormeaux said. “She was awesome. I don't have one complaint about her. We come to the 2-year-old-in-training sales because we can see them at work. We can see how they handle it mentally and physically. She just passed all the grades. She blew my socks off.”

Moore Restocks at OBS

Hootie Moore had upwards of 30 horses in training a few years ago, but with the pandemic he cut his numbers back dramatically. The Arkansas-based owner was restocking this week at OBS where he purchased a filly by Connect (hip 1091) for $550,000 from the consignment of Eddie Woods Friday.

“We liked everything about her,” Moore said of the juvenile. “She's the one we've been waiting on the whole sale. Everything is costing a lot more than it should, but we went ahead and we'll see.”

The filly, who worked a furlong last week in :10 flat, is out of stakes winner Special Dream (Officer) and is a half-sister to stakes placed Momameamaria (Quality Road).

Moore also purchased a colt by Runhappy (hip 427) for $160,000. Both juveniles will be trained by John Ortiz.

“I have had up to 35 horses, but during COVID, I like to go on the backside, so I went down to almost nothing,” Moore said.

Moore did his bidding while sporting a cap promoting Barber Road (Race Day) and he owns horses in partnership with that GI Kentucky Derby contender's owners Bill and Tammy Simon's WSS Racing. The Simons and Moore campaigned 2019 GIII Winning Colors S. winner Honey Bunny (Tapizar).

Bill Harrigan's Miacomet Farm purchased the filly for $80,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

Later in Friday's session, Moore added a colt by Oscar Performance (hip 1210) for $120,000. @JessMartiniTDN

Grassroots Powers Through at OBS

David McKathan and Jody Mihalic's Grassroots Training and Sales served notice it was in line for a strong Spring sale with a series of bullet workers during the under-tack preview and the operation duly delivered in the sales ring this week, ultimately selling all 40 juveniles it sent through the ring.

“For us, people know that we sell our horses,” Mihalic said. “We deal in volume and we sell them and we love when people do well with the horses they buy from us. We work really hard to buy them right and they work really hard and buy them right.”

Grassroots biggest sale of the week was a $275,000 daughter of Street Boss (hip 346) who worked a furlong last week in a bullet :9 3/5. The filly had been purchased for $22,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

Other pinhooking scores included a colt by Freud–a $50,000 Fasig-Tipton New York-bred sale acquisition–who sold for $215,000 and a filly by Good Samaritan–purchased for $55,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October sale–who sold for $210,000.

During Friday's session of the four-day auction, Grassroots sold a filly by Jimmy Creed, who worked in :9 4/5 last week, for $185,000. She had been a $38,000 purchase at last year's Fasig-Tipton October sale.

Grassroots horses found plenty of buyers in the middle market in Ocala.

“I think everybody is getting shuffled up as the economy goes and the overall dollar value has marked everything up so much,” Mihalic said. “So everyone has had to step up a little bit into that middle market.”

Of the operation's perfect strike rate, Mihalic said, “It's fantastic. And now I have 40 more heading to Maryland.” @JessMartiniTDN

Into Mischief Filly Returns to Her Breeder

Breeder Robert S. Evans sold his Into Mischief filly out of Squeeze (Lemon Drop Kid) to the Recio's Lynwood Stable for $150,000 at Keeneland September. But, when she returned to the auction ring at OBS Friday, he decided he had to have her back, going to $525,000 to secure Hip 1097. Trainer Kent Sweezey bid on his owner's behalf.

“She worked really well [:9 4/5],” Sweezey said. “She's gorgeous. He loves the family and the way she moved. Gene Recio gave us the thumbs up. She's a queen, so we will see how she runs. She will probably come with me to Palm Meadows or Monmouth with a goal of running at Saratoga.”

Evans bought Squeeze for $350,000 at Keeneland September and this filly is her second foal. Squeeze is a half-sister to GSW Ocho Ocho Ocho (Street Sense) and GSP Private Ensign (A.P. Indy).

The Recios had another pinhooking score just a few hips earlier when a Java's War colt (Hip 1092) they purchased for $72,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October Sale brought $175,000 from Joseph Graffeo.

“She was just a really good individual,” Recio said. “She didn't turn a hair wrong the whole time we had her. She was as straight-forward of a 2-year-old sales horse as I've ever had. Whenever you meet the magic :9 4/5-:10 flat number for a filly with that kind of quality pedigree, you hope for a price like that, but you never expect it. We are very thankful.” —@CDeBernardisTDN

Hip 939 is one of three :9 4/5 workers for Grassroots this week with the others being a Tapiture filly (Hip 87) (video) and a Macho Uno colt (Hip 674) (video). McKathan also had a :9 3/5 breezer in Hip 346, a daughter of Street Boss.

“It's been good for us,” McKathan said of the Spring Sale under-tack show. “We have some nice horses. They were training good on the farm and we can usually relate how they are training out there to what we are going to get here. But, it is always a pleasant surprise when you break :10 flat. It is harder to do than people know.”

McKathan purchased Hip 939 for $38,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October Sale. Bred in Ontario by Stan Dodson, the chestnut is a daughter of SW Quite a Ruckus (Richter Scale).

“She is a really nice filly,” McKathan said of his latest bullet worker. “She has been training well. We knew she was a special filly. She is a pretty filly too. I have had some luck with Jimmy Creeds.”

The other juveniles to breeze in :9 4/5 Friday were a Candy Ride (Arg) filly (Hip 901) consigned by King's Equine (video); a son of Honor Code (Hip 1006) from the McKathan Bros. shedrow (video); a Bolt d'Oro filly (Hip 1017) sent out by de Meric Sales (video); and a filly by Midshipman (Hip 1048) from the Top Line Sales barn (video).

A colt from the first crop of GI Haskell Invitatonal S. winner Girvin (Hip 1004) breezed the fastest quarter of Friday's session in :20 3/5. He was consigned by Jesse Hoppel's Coastal Equine, which also had a bullet worker Wednesday in Hip 548, a Lord Nelson colt who went in :20 3/5.

An $8,000 OBS October purchase, Hip 1004 was withdrawn from the OBS March Sale in favor of this auction. He is a half-brother to MSW Tiger Blood (Cowtown Cat) and SP Smarten Up (American Freedom). A filly by Ocala Stud's Girvin (Hip 198) summoned $240,000 during the OBS March Sale after breezing in :20 4/5.

The seventh and final session of the OBS Spring Sale under-tack show starts at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Hip 276 is consigned by Eddie Woods on behalf of her breeder, Oussama Aboughazale's International Equities Holding.

“We were expecting her to be quick, but we didn't know she was that quick,” International Equities Holding's bloodstock manager Frances Relihan said with a laugh Monday afternoon.

The filly is out of Cinnamon Spice (Candy Ride {Arg}), a half-sister to Grade I winner Violence (Medaglia d'Oro) and from the family of champion Sky Beauty. Aboughazale purchased the mare for $700,000 at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton February sale.

“We bought the mare as a maiden and paid quite a bit for her at the time,” Relihan recalled. “She's a beautiful-looking mare and her first foal was a little premature, a Medaglia d'Oro filly that we ended up keeping and she went down to Chile to the breeding program down there. And then she had a Pioneerof the Nile filly that Bobby Flay bought [for $250,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September sale]. She's quite a nice filly, but hasn't started yet.”

With the mare in foal to War Front, the team decided to test the market in 2019, but Cinnamon Spice was led out unsold at $750,000.

“We were trying to capitalize on the market a little bit,” Relihan said. “She was bringing good money, but we kind of got cold feet and decided to bring her home.”

Hip 276 is not the first International Equities Holding-bred filly to record a snappy :20 1/5 work at OBS. The operation sold a yearling by Not This Time out of Sheza Smoke Show (Wilko) for $135,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September sale and the filly returned with a :20 1/5 work before selling to Zedan Racing Stables for $1.35 million at the 2020 OBS Spring sale. Named Princess Noor, she won that year's GI Del Mar Debutante. In foal to Into Mischief, she sold for $2.9 million at last year's Fasig-Tipton November sale.

Results like that led to a modification in Aboughazale's commercial breeding operation which had traditionally offered most of its crop as yearlings.

“The farm is still very much in its infancy with just five years under our belt,” Relihan said. “I won't say we are changing the program, but we are always modifying and trying to see where horses will fit better. If horses aren't ready for the yearling sales, then I think it's great to have that, not as a backup because they RNA'd or something, but to have the objective to take them to the 2-year-old sales.

She continued, “We've seen in the past how you can sell a horse at the yearling sales who might not be mature enough and they might need a little extra time. And then they come into their own and they breeze fast. With Princess Noor, for example, you sell a $135,000 yearling before Not This Time hits and then you see what she breezes in and she sells for $1.3 million.”

The War Front filly is one of seven juveniles bred by International Equities Holding who will be offered at auction this spring.

“She was very beautiful, well-proportioned, and very sharp, but she just needed to grow up a little bit,” Relihan said of the decision to keep the filly out of the yearling sales. “We felt if we put her in September, she would be undervalued. So we put her out for the summer, gave her a chance to grow up and then when Eddie was in town in September, we said, 'Come on out and take a look at her.' We thought we would put her in his program and see what she could do. I was down at the March sale last month with Mr. Aboughazale and we went to the farm to see her and she's one of those fillies that just improves, improves, improves. She loves her work and she's very sharp mentally. She's an exciting filly.”

Cinnamon Spice recently produced a Constitution filly and will be bred back to City of Light this year.

A filly by Street Boss (hip 346) claimed the fastest furlong work of the under-tack show so far when she covered the distance in :9 3/5 Monday. The chestnut is out of Dazzle (Twirling Candy), a full-sister to multiple graded placed Exaulted, and is consigned by David McKathan and Jody Mihalic's Grassroots Training and Sales. Grassroots purchased the filly for $22,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

The under-tack show continues through Saturday with sessions beginning daily at 8 a.m. The Spring sale will begin next Tuesday and continue through Friday with bidding commencing each day at 10:30 a.m.

Hip 211, a Quality Road colt out of the unraced Storm Cat mare Stormy Welcome, whose runners include the stakes-placed Welcoming. His third dam is the cornerstone broodmare Weekend Surprise, putting this colt in the family of Horse of the Year A.P. Indy, Preakness Stakes winner Summer Squall, and Grade 1 winners Happy Saver and Court Vision. Eddie Woods consigns the colt, as agent.

Hip 260, a Munnings colt out of the winning Medaglia d'Oro mare Tweet, whose three foals to race are all winners. Wavertree Stables consigns the Pennsylvania-bred, as agent.

Hip 264, a first-crop Tom's Ready colt out of the winning Macho Uno mare Uno Royale. The Florida-bred is consigned by de Meric Sales, agent.

Hip 337, an American Pharoah colt out of the Theatrical mare Baroness Aamoura. King's Equine consigns the half-brother to stakes-placed Madam Aamoura, as agent.

Hip 340, Pippilotta, a Race Day filly who is the first foal out of the winning Into Mischief mare Battle Tux. Grassroots Training and Sales consigns the filly, as agent.

Wednesday's fastest worker at a quarter-mile was Hip 295, a Union Rags filly out of the stakes-winning Northern Afleet mare Afleet Lass. The filly is a half-sister to Grade 3-placed stakes winner Honor the Fleet, and Brazillian champions Juno and Love 'N' Happiness are in the extended family. Tom McCrocklin consigns the filly as agent.

The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale under tack show concludes Thursday, beginning at 8 a.m. Eastern. The auction will take place May 17-18, beginning each day at 11 a.m.

Eddie Woods consigns hip 107, a daughter of Violence out of the unraced Royal Paradise (Unbridled's Song). The bay filly claimed the session's quarter-mile bullet time of :20 3/5.

“I was expecting a good work for her,” Woods said Monday afternoon. “You can't tell someone a horse is going to go in :20 3/5, it's ridiculous. But whatever the fastest work was going to be of the day, she was going to be really right on it.”

The filly is a half-sister to stakes-placed Bano Solo (Goldencents), who sold for $400,000 at the 2018 OBS March sale. She was purchased for $50,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“She's tall, leggy and she's got some length to her,” Woods said. “She's out of an Unbridled's Song mare and you can kind of see that in her. And she's bigger than I'd ever thought she'd be. She was a medium-sized yearling, but she's a big, beautiful filly now.”

Woods sent out six juveniles to work at OBS Monday.

“We had a good day, it all went pretty well,” he said of his results. “There were no surprises. Everyone looked to come back well, so we are happy about everything.”

Of the track following a day of intense rain storms Sunday, Woods said, “I think the track was very fair. There were a couple of :20 4/5s and :10 flats. There weren't any :9 and changes and that's kind of the way the track should be. We had so much rain yesterday and that track acts a little bit like a sponge at times with a lot of water where it absorbs some of the stuff and expands a little bit. We're talking minute amounts, but minute amounts effect times. So it will be interesting to see how it is as we go forward in the week. Hopefully it stays the same.”

Becky Thomas's Sequel Bloodstock sent out four New York-breds to work Monday and came away with three sharing the bullet furlong time.

Leading off the trio was hip 4, a daughter of Laoban out of Paper Kite (Bernardini). The bay filly, bred by Sequel, turned in her :10 flat work early in the day's first session.

“When you see me have a horse that goes first, that's usually a horse that I think a lot of in terms of speed,” Thomas said, adding of the filly, “She's a pretty mover out of a Bernardini mare. She is very nice. We're happy with her.”

Another Sequel homebred, a son of the operation's stallion Mission Impazible (hip 135), also turned in a :10 flat work. The gray colt is out of Scott's Aly Cat (Tale of the Cat).

“I bought [Scott's Aly Cat] from Roy Lerman from his Lambholm program,” Thomas explained. “We bought her in foal to Mission because I had seen her year-before baby and liked it. He has a little bit of a Tale of the Cat look and yet has a little more leg to him because of the Unbridled's Song from Mission. I gave that mare away on a co-breed deal to one of our breeders who is probably very happy today.”

Also working in :10 flat from the Sequel consignment was hip 187, a first-crop son of Grade I winner Cupid out of Silver Sands (El Prado {Ire}). Thomas purchased the colt for $57,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October sale.

“He's a May 25 foal and he's got a lot of length and a lot of stride,” Thomas said. “He belonged to a friend of mine who bred him in New York, so you always feel good when you can give back to our whole community. That horse was a Hidden Lake horse and they like to support our stallions, so I try hard on those breeders who support our stallions.”

Rounding out Sequel's team of New York-breds working Monday was a colt by Central Banker (hip 115), who worked in :10 1/5. Thomas is consigning the colt on behalf of breeders Chester and Mary Broman.

“Mr. Broman is another one who supports the New York program,” Thomas said. “So it's always fun when you have home-team horses.”

Despite the heavy rains Sunday, Thomas called an audible and sent her horses out to train following the cancellation of the breeze show.

“Normally we don't train the day before the breeze, but because they had already had one day off, I didn't want to not train,” Thomas said. “So we trained yesterday heading in.”

She added of the weather, “It was terrible. I realized we were about to get a deluge right in the middle of it.”

De Meric Sales sent out a pair of bullet workers Monday: a son of American Freedom (hip 78, :10 flat); and a colt by Classic Empire (hip 87, :10 flat).

Also represented by a pair of bullets Monday was Grassroots Training and Sales, which sent out a filly by Dialed In (hip 113, :10 flat); and a filly by Violence (hip 190, :10 flat).

The brigade of bullet workers Monday was completed by: hip 48, a colt by Kantharos consigned by Julie Davies (:10 flat); hip 108, a colt by Tapiture consigned by Tradewinds Farm (:10 flat); hip 118, a colt by Gun Runner consigned by Eisaman Equine (:10 flat); a filly by Noble Mission (GB) (hip 163) consigned by Top Line Sales (:10 flat); a colt by Dialed In (hip 175) consigned by Wavertree Stables (:10 flat); and a filly by Klimt (hip 203) consigned by Randy Bradshaw (:10 flat).

The under-tack show continues through Saturday with sessions beginning each day at 8 a.m. The OBS Spring sale will be held next Tuesday through Friday. Bidding begins each day at 10:30 a.m.

A filly by Shackleford (hip 15), working early in the day’s first set, turned in the session’s fastest quarter-mile time of :20 4/5. Consigned by Jesse Hoppel’s Coastal Equine, the bay filly is out of Peace Queen (Indian Charlie), a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Tizaqueena (Tiznow).

“We expected her to be a very fast horse,” Hoppel said. “I didn’t know if she’d be the fastest horse breezing today, but I knew she would be right up there.”

Hoppel continued, “She is a big, classy-looking filly. She doesn’t have any vices about her, physically or mentally. She is a horse you can count on. So leading her up there, we expected her to breeze well and she did.”

The consignor said he was happy with the track conditions at OBS Monday.

“The track was a slow track today, but the slow tracks let horses separate themselves more,” Hoppel said. “A fast track will speed up a slow horse, but not necessarily help a fast horse.”

Hoppel is consigning the youngster on behalf of New York breeder James Doyle, brother of KatieRich Farm owner Larry Doyle. James Doyle, who purchased Peace Queen for $10,000 at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton New York Mixed Sale, currently has just two broodmares. Also through Coastal Equine, he will be offering a filly by Dialed In out of a granddaughter of Inside Information (Private Account) (hip 542) who is scheduled to work Thursday.

“I am lucky my brother has a great operation down there, so many times I drop them in New York and then they go to KatieRich for some kindergarten training in Kentucky,” Doyle said. “And I kind of draft on him a little bit.”

Asked if it was his brother who led him into racing, Doyle said with a laugh, “It was just the other way around. He blames me.”

Of his Shackleford filly, Doyle said, “She has just been a joy since the day she hit the ground. She has size and she’s obviously fast. The mare is a great Darley mare and Jesse Hoppel has just done an outstanding job with her.”

As for how the juvenile ended up at the 2-year-old sales, Doyle laughed again and said, “I forgot to put her in a yearling sale–how about that?”

Six juveniles shared the day’s fastest furlong time of :10 flat.

A colt by Ride on Curlin (hip 66) was first to work the co-fastest :10 flat time Monday. Consigned by Grassroots Training and Sales, the dark bay is out of Rated Xtreme (Magna Graduate), a full-sister to graded winner Blueeysintherein. He was purchased by Grassroots for $11,000 at last year’s OBS October Yearling Sale.

A colt by Race Day (hip 27) went the furlong in :10 flat for consignor Bobby Dodd. He is out of Pistolpackinsenora (Closing Argument). Also from Dodd’s consignment, hip 143, a filly by Tale of Ekati, worked in :10 flat. The bay is out of Shelby’s Song (Songandaprayer). Both juveniles were bred by Misty and Brad Grady.

Hip 49, a daughter of Into Mischief, went in :10 flat. Consigned by Brick City Thoroughbreds, the bay filly is out of graded stakes winner Prospective Saint (Saint Ballado) and is a half-sister to graded placed Island Saint (Speightstown). Bred by Mulholland Springs, the juvenile RNA’d for $170,000 at the OBS March sale following a :10 2/5 work earlier this year.

A daughter of Frosted (hip 82) worked in :10 flat for consignor Eddie Woods. The bay filly is out of the unraced Ride to Houston (Candy Ride {Arg}), a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Runway Model (Petionville), who is the dam of Grade I winner McKinzie (Street Sense). Bred by Whisper Hill Farm, she RNA’d for $275,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale.

From the Wavertree Stables consignment, a filly by Malibu Moon (hip 115) went in :10 flat Monday morning. The chestnut it out of Samsational (Unbridled’s Song), an unraced half-sister to Grade I winner I Want Revenge (Stephen Got Even). She was purchased by Joe Minor’s JSM Equine for $125,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale.

The last of the bullet workers went to the track shortly before 10 a.m. and the day’s final set was delayed twice for about 20 minutes between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

“The later part of the day, the weather affected conditions,” Hoppel said. “I don’t know how it affected the track itself. The last page of the breeze show was riddled with a lot of scratches, so there weren’t as many horses who had to deal with the weather later in the day. Early in the day, down here this time of year, it gets hot pretty fast. So we just do everything we can to help these horses be as happy as they can be and of course help ourselves-it’s hot for us, too.”

The first session of the under tack show was lightly attended, but Hoppel noted it’s a long time to sale time.

“It’s a six-day breeze show and it’s hot,” he said. “I think OBS does a good job of putting these videos online and now incorporating walking videos. I think a lot of people are going to be doing their homework and getting their notes off the tougher individuals who are sitting on the turn, possibly. So I think right now, with the six-day breeze show, it’s too early to tell what the attendance is going to be like here. I think for a filly like [hip 15], there are going to be people looking for good horses like that. The other levels, I don’t know what parties are scheduled to attend, but the more the merrier.”

The under tack show continues through Saturday with sessions beginning daily at 7:30 a.m. The July sale will be held next Tuesday through Thursday with bidding commencing at 10 a.m.

• Hip 505, a Pennsylvania-bred Fed Biz filly out of the unraced Awesome Again mare Dream Realized, who is the dam of four winners from six runners. Crane Thoroughbred Services consigns the filly, as agent.
• Hip 518, a first-crop Frosted filly out of the stakes-placed Bluegrass Cat mare Enchante, whose first foal to race is a winner. SBM Training and Sales, agent, handles the filly, whose page includes champion Forty Niner.
• Hip 552, a Dialed In filly out of the winning Menifee mare Fall Fantasy, who is the dam of eight runners and six winners. The filly is a full-sister to Chalon, a stakes winner and runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.
