Two other members of the dispersal featured among the top lots, with the unraced 4-year-old Lathan (Fr) (Doctor Dino {Fr}) (lot 18) bringing £60,000 on the bid of J P McGrath Bloodstock; and lot 46, Goonhilly (Ire) (Mount Nelson {GB}), was knocked down to Dan Skelton Racing for £40,000.

Peter Niven bought Quintus Arrius (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) (lot 36) for £50,000 from Kevin Ryan's Hambleton Lodge Stables, to round out the top four lots.

Of the 126 offered, 105 sold (83%) for a gross of £1,247,100. The average was £11,878 and the median was £5,500.

The debut winning pointer Townhill (Ire) (Presenting {GB}) (lot 101) was knocked down to Ed Bailey for £60,000; while lot 111, the winning pointer Tara Line (Ire) (Kayf Tara {GB}), made £50,000 from Syd Hosie and Gay Kelleway. Loughanmore Farms and Cobajay Stables consigned the duo, respectively.

At the end of the sale, 169 lots had sold from 232 offered (73%) for an aggregate of £1,602,600. The average was just marginally down at £9,483 and the median came in at £6,000.

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent said, “The August Sale offers something for all NH owners, trainers, breeders and pinhookers and we introduced two new sessions to enhance it in 2022. The small selection of NH mares was well received by the market and were likely bought to support the many new NH stallions available in the UK. The new 2-year-old session, which was introduced to support the new BHA/TBA junior hurdle series, is a concept which we believe will grow as the new series develops over the coming seasons.”

We made the decision to hold the sale on the revised date after consultation with the UK breeders who had to hold onto these horses for a lot longer than planned, so we are very grateful that everyone has been so accommodating and helped to make today such a huge success.

“A big positive for everyone has been the ability to host a sale with limited COVID restrictions which is something that we have all been looking forward to for some time. The sale also hosted the Goffs UK sponsored TBA NH Breeders' Awards last night, which was moved from its traditional May date, again due to COVID restrictions, and to be able to celebrate that with the largest audience in the event's history was superb. The two-days have certainly felt far more 'normal' and bodes well for our Premier and Silver Yearling Sales which are now just under three weeks away.”

Topping trade was 5-year-old pointer Secret Scripture (GB) (Mount Nelson {GB}) (lot 97), who was hammered down to Tom Malone for £50,000. He was offered by Donnchadh Doyle, who sold two of the top four lots on the day, also including Etincelle Artiste (Fr) (Great Pretender {Ire}) (lot 129), who made £40,000 from Nick Alexander.

The second top lot was Canford Light (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}) (lot 22), a recent winner over hurdles who fetched £42,000 from Evan Williams.

“It was hoped that we would be in a place to hold a physical sale of NH Weanlings at Doncaster in February and we have been planning as such since our announcement earlier this month,” said Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent. “However, with the recent changes in government announcements, the current scale of the pandemic and the issues in getting overseas buyers to the UK, we feel that holding a physical sale next month is not in the best interests of everyone involved.

“We have spoken to all vendors who have entered NH weanlings and most have committed to offer their entries at the later date. We have also received some very positive comments from vendors who understand why we need to make this change so we would like to extend our thanks to our clients for working with us. The August Sale is a proven and growing NH sale, having sold the likes of Tiger Roll, and recording prices of up to £230,000.

“As stated, we will be holding our Part 1 Online January Sale of Horses-in-Training and NH Breeding Stock as scheduled next Tuesday 26 January from 10 a.m. The catalogue for that sale is online and anyone wishing to bid online must register to bid with Goffs 48 hours prior to the sale.”
