Princess Vega (Ire) (Beat Hollow {GB}), a winning daughter of six-time Cheltenham festival scorer Quevega (Fr) (Robin Des Champs {Fr}), proved to be worth the wait at the Goffs February Sale when selling as one of the last lots through the ring [431G] on Thursday evening for €150,000 to agent Gerry Hogan on behalf of Swanbridge Bloodstock .

It was Liz Lucas's Swanbridge Bloodstock who signed for the Order Of St George (Ire) filly out of Princess Vega at the November National Hunt Sale at Goffs for €48,000 last year. According to Hogan, so pleased are the new owners with their Order Of St George filly from the top-notch family, they decided to push the boat out to secure the dam who was sold by the Irish National Stud in foal to Walk In The Park (Ire).

Hogan said, “She was bought for Swanbridge Bloodstock, who bought the Order Of St George, who is the daughter of this mare. She's a nice mare and the pedigree speaks for itself. They know the family and they were very anxious to get her.”

It was Catherine Magnier who pushed Hogan furthest and filled the role as determined underbidder. The pair were left fighting it out from the six-figure mark for Princess Vega, who, like her superstar dam Quevega, was trained by the champion trainer in Ireland, Willie Mullins.

Princess Vega, a winner of a Tramore bumper on debut for Mullins, will now join the broodmare band of Swanbridge Bloodstock in Britain, which features well-known mares like Alasi (GB) (Alflora {Ire}), Intense Tango (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), Western Victory (Ire) (Westerner {GB}) and more.

Graduates of the British National Hunt breeding operation includes Midnight River (GB) (Midnight Legend {GB}), Prince Of Scars (Ire) (Flemensfirth) and last year's impressive Goffs UK Spring Sale Bumper winner Crest Of Glory (GB) (Black Sam Bellamy {Ire}).

Princess Vega proved to be the highlight of the two-day sale which saw turnover fall by 29% to €3,082,400 compared to 12 months ago. The average fell 19% to €12,898 while the median was also down 11% to €8,000. The clearance rate stood at 65%.

Goff chief executive Henry Beeby commented, “As ever Goffs February has been dominated by weanlings and once again has delivered the highest-priced Flat and National Hunt weanling of the February sales season by some margin. That is the strength of the sale and what sets it apart as, like November and December, Kildare Paddocks was awash with pinhookers finalising their 2024 yearling drafts and adding to their three-year-old stores of two years' time which led to several lively bidding duels for those youngsters adjudged to be the most commercial.

“Of course, a clearance rate of 65% is a clear mirror of the autumn sales season and those the market deemed less appealing were friendless in the ring. However, the familiar cry of 'it's hard to buy the good one' was as evident as ever and we are all having to adapt to the evolving nature of the market.”

Beeby added, “Trade for the breeding stock session mirrored the weanlings with keen competition for some headed by the €150,000 top price and less interest in others but we have welcomed a diverse overseas contingent over the two days who are enticed year after year by the undeniable quality of Irish bloodlines and the proactivity of ITM working alongside the Goffs Purchaser Attraction Team and our superb international agents. Indeed, buyers from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Libya, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Turkey, UK and Zambia have all featured in the results and ensured a truly cosmopolitan feel to the sale.

“So Goffs February confirms its market leading status again with two vibrant sessions and a big crowd from start to finish. As ever, we extend our thanks to each vendor and all our purchasers for we are nothing without them.”

“It's Not Rocket Science,” – Havana Grey Continues To Shine

There's no such thing as a dull day when it comes to Havana Grey (GB). The Whitsbury Stud-based stallion lit the touch paper to the February Sale on Wednesday when a colt of his was knocked down to Yeomanstown Stud for €85,000 and the big results kept coming for the sire sensation on Thursday when top judge Willie Browne signed for a Havana Grey filly under the banner of JB Bloodstock to the tune of €90,000.

That meant that Havana Grey accounted for three of the top five weanlings sold at Kildare Paddocks this week. The €90,000 filly (lot 291) was offered by The Castlebridge Consignment on behalf of her breeder Tommy Severns, who was rightfully overjoyed by the result.

He said, “I've loved her from day one. She was always a pretty classy filly and the dream was to keep her, but as a small operation, we have to keep trading. Billy Jackson-Stops felt she would stand out a bit here, so we targeted this sale as a result.

“It's all a credit to the team at Stoneyhill Stud in Gloucestershire, where she was born and bred. We then sent her to Triermore Stud in County Meath, where Paul McDonnell and Terry Denning do a great job. The filly has thrived since she went there and having seen the videos, she looked great on the complex, so Bill and his team at The Castlebridge Consignment deserve a lot of praise too.”

The January-born Havana Grey filly is out of the Selkirk mare Scots Fern (GB), a three-time winner. Scots Fern has already produced two winners, Giava Dream (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Hebridean Nomad (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}), from five foals.

Severns added, “It's our (Stonehill Stud) second year in operation and a result like this is so important. Ed Harper deserves a lot of credit, too, as he was very strong on Havana Grey and advised me to use him.

“We've got six mares at home, so we're a pretty small operation, though a result like this may help us to go out and improve the quality of stock on the farm. I'm a polo player by day, so I'm currently in Argentina. I'm actually gutted to not be there, but that's the way it is.

“Scots Fern has been great for us and she foaled a smart filly by Perfect Power (Ire) last week. We haven't finalised our mating plans for the year, but there are an exciting bunch of stallions on the list so far.”

For Browne, who revealed to be down on numbers with regards to his foal purchases in 2023, the Havana Grey filly proved to be exactly what he was searching for. The legendary breeze-up trainer and pinhooker admitted that his new acquisition didn't come cheap but explained how she could slot into any yearling sale in the autumn.

He said, “She is a very good model and I couldn't fault her in any way. She was plenty expensive now but I suppose that's what you have to pay to get a Havana Grey these days-it's not rocket science.

“I actually underbid another Havana Grey earlier in the day so I am very pleased to have gotten her. I usually buy around 12 foals a year and we were down on numbers this time round. They were very hard to buy in the winter. This filly could come back to the Orby or even to Book 2 but I've been very lucky selling at Goffs down through the years so we might keep her for the Orby.”

Commercial weanlings were in demand on day one of the Goffs February Sale as a Havana Grey (GB) colt [lot189] consigned by Kellsgrange Stud led home proceedings at €85,000 to Yeomanstown Stud as turnover dropped 30% compared to last year.

The day one sale-topper is out of the unraced Danehill Dancer (Ire) mare How High The Sky (Ire), who has produced eight winners from 10 foals, including the highly-rated sprinter Up Above (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}).

David O'Callaghan of Yeomanstown Stud commented, “A great model. By a very good stallion and a good dam to back him up. He could come back here next autumn and we are delighted to get him. He could go anywhere.”

One of the big stories to emerge from Wednesday was the excellent trade enjoyed by rookie operators Aisling Noone and Simon Kavanagh of Drumloose Stables. Despite not being in business a full 12 months, the Mullingar-based couple built on some solid results posted in 2023 by selling their colts by Havana Grey (GB) and Galiway (GB) for a combined sum of €114,000.

Such results came after Drumloose Stables secured €95,000 for a son of Blue Bresil (Fr) at last year's Arkle Sale, confirming the theory that Goffs is a lucky place for the pair.

Speaking after selling the Havana Grey weanling colt [Lot 91] to Amy and Con Marnane for €46,000 and the Galiway colt [Lot 201] to Yeomanstown Stud for €68,000, Noone said, “It was a brilliant day and Goffs is becoming very lucky for us. Our operation isn't even up and running 12 months yet. We moved back to Mullingar, where we are based, last April. Since then, everything has gone well and we have got some fantastic clients and friends who are backing us all the way.”

She added, “The horses we had today, they were beautiful. The Galiway was very easy to prepare and is a very athletic horse. He walked very well and the sire was a big help to us. The Galiway and Kendargent (Fr) cross has already produced a Group 1 winner. I'm not sure what Yeomanstown Stud are planning on doing with him but I am assuming we might see him back at a yearling sale in the autumn.

“The Havana Grey has gone to Con Marnane, a very good friend of ours. It is about seven or eight years since I did a season with Con at Maisons-Laffitte in France so it's great for things to come full circle. Hopefully both horses will be lucky for both purchasers.”

Tally-Ho Stud is famous all over the world for its association with fast horses on the level but old habits clearly die hard and the master of the County Westmeath outfit, Tony O'Callaghan, went to €75,000 to secure top-notch jumps prospect by No Risk At All (Fr) [lot 148] from Railstown Stud. No Risk At All needs no introduction as a jumps stallion, being the sire of Allaho (Fr), Epatante (Fr) and more. O'Callaghan signed for the colt alongside Hamish Macauley.

Of the 188 lots offered [down from 216 this day last year], 111 were sold, which represents a clearance rate of just 59%. Turnover dropped from €2,081,750 to €1,452,600 while the average fell 18% to €13,087 and the median stayed the same at €9,000.

A half-sister to live Gold Cup contender Gerri Colombe (Fr) (Saddler Maker {Ire}) and a winning daughter of wondermare Quevega (Fr) (Robin Des Champs {Fr}) are some of the standouts on show at the two-day Goffs February Sale which kicks off on Wednesday at Kildare Paddocks.

Princess Vega (Ire) (Beat Hollow {GB}), winner of a Tramore bumper for Willie Mullins, will be sold in foal to Walk In The Park (Ire). As well as being a daughter of the six-time Cheltenham festival heroine Quevega, she is also a half-sister to the four-time Grade 1 winner Facile Vega (Ire) and Listed bumper scorer Aurora Vega (Ire). She will be consigned by The Irish National Stud as a supplementary lot 431G.

Another supplementary lot, Hermione Colombe (Fr), is sure to grab plenty of attention, being a half-sister to Gerri Colombe, who is as short as 8-1 for the Gold Cup.

Trained by Gordon Elliott, Gerri Colombe has won four times at the highest level and was only narrowly pipped by The Real Whacker (Ire) in last year's Brown Advisory at Cheltenham.

A daughter of Brave Mansonnien (Fr), the unraced Hermione Colombe [lot 431H] will be sold in foal to Waldgeist (GB) having already produced colt foals by Sea Moon (GB) and Night Wish (Ger). She will be consigned by Alpha Play Bloodstock.

The Sale also features a five-strong draft from the Aga Khan Studs while Moyglare Stud will offer four weanlings, including a Make Believe (GB) colt out of dual Grade 1 hurdle winner Unaccompanied (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). The nine-time winner, who carried the Moyglare silks with great distinction over jumps and on the Flat for Dermot Weld, has already produced a classy performer on the level in the shape of Group 3-placed Keep In Touch (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}).

Other interesting prospects include In Wood (Ire) [lot 431J], an Authorized (Ire) half-sister to Grade 1 winner Very Wood (Fr). She will be sold in foal to Diamond Boy (Fr). Meanwhile, seven-time winner Pearl Of The West (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) (lot 431C) is just another classy broodmare prospect on offer.

The sale, which has produced classy types like Twilight Jet (Ire) (Twilight Son {GB}), Bolthole (Ire) (Free Eagle {Ire}) and Yaxeni (Fr) (Maxios {GB}) in recent years, and offers a broad mixture of horses-in-training, weanlings and broodmares, gets underway at 10am.

La Petite Sissi (Ire) (Ivawood {Ire}) (lot 385), a half-sister to G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine La Petite Coco (Ire) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}), is one of the leading lots catalogued for the Goffs February Sale on Feb. 7-8. A total of 431 lots are spread across the two days featuring both Flat and National Hunt horses of all ages, with each session beginning at 10 a.m.

Wednesday's session begins with 2-year-olds, horses-in-training and stores followed by a weanling section with a wide variety of sires represented. Foals kick off Thursday's session, that will end with breeding stock from both codes.

Some lots of note include White Caviar (Fr) (Australia {GB}) (lot 360), a sister to G1 St Leger winner Galileo Chrome (Ire) (Australia {GB}); the stakes-placed Pretty Rebel (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) (lot 384); and Grade 3 chase winner Waitnsee (Ire) (Arctic Cosmos) (lot 392).

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “Following a phenomenal 2023 at Goffs–a year full of highlights which began with the February Sale reaffirming its market-leading status–we are delighted to present a catalogue of real quality and diversity under both codes for our first sale of the New Year.

“Goffs February is always very popular with breeders, pinhookers and end-users alike, and the Goffs team together with our friends at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing look forward to welcoming buyers from home and abroad to Kildare Paddocks to what we hope will be a strong start to our 2024 sales year.”

The print edition of the catalogue will be available next week.

Baroda Stud finished as strong as it started at the Goffs February Sale by sending out the top three lots on Thursday, headed by Galileo (Ire) mare Red Azalea (Ire) (lot 482A), knocked down to Mick Donohoe of BBA Ireland for €340,000.

Red Azalea was a supplementary entry to the sale. A winner in her own right when trained by Donnacha O'Brien, she is a daughter of the classy Music Box (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who scored at Group 3 level.

Donohoe also signed for the unraced Frankel (GB) filly, Nomadland (GB) (468), while Barry Lynch secured black-type performer Romanosa (GB) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) (lot 410), as Baroda's mares played starring roles late in the day.

Lynch said, “Romanosa is a very nice filly and has a good back pedigree. I think she'll make a lovely mare and she'll come back to auction next year in foal to a high profile stallion, fingers crossed. She's been bought by a number of guys who want to buy a mare to reoffer at a public auction so fingers crossed it will all work out.”

Earlier in the afternoon, Boherguy Stud enjoyed a good result with a Blue Point (Ire) colt (lot 256) selling to Hamish McCauley for €60,000 while Jill Lamb went to €52,000 to secure a Too Darn Hot (GB) filly (lot 266)) from Clare Manning's draft.

Lamb, buying on behalf of Mike Watson's Trebles Holford Thoroughbreds, also snapped up a €56,000 Dandy Man filly (lot 328) from Church View Stables with Lamb labelling the visit as productive.

She said, “I absolutely loved the Dandy Man (Ire) but didn't think it would cost that much to buy her. She looks a real racey filly. We may keep her to race or we may reoffer her as a yearling. I loved the Too Darn Hot as well. She had a great pedigree and I am very keen on Too Darn Hot's yearlings. Hopefully she will come good. They are for Mike Watson who has Trebles Holford Thoroughbreds. It's been a productive afternoon and I'm really pleased with the two fillies I've bought.”

Goffs chief Henry Beeby was particularly pleased to see Lamb and her fellow raiders in action at the two-day sale where turnover dropped 28% to €4,348,550.

The caveat being that there were 66 less horses offered at the February sale this year compared to in 2022. Of the 424 offered, 273 were sold, which represented a 64% clearance rate. The average over the two days was €15,929, down 7% on last year, while the median stayed the same at €9,000.

Beeby commented, “Goffs February fulfils an important function in the sales calendar as it provides another opportunity for foal (weanling) sellers and buyers. Sometimes the youngster needed more time and on other occasions they did not make our superb November or December Foal Sales for some reason or failed to hit the target on that visit to the ring.

“When November and December are strong it sometimes leads to a weaker February as orders might be filled and/or the better lots already sold. Whether or not that is the case this week is debatable but the common theme over the last two days has been a vibrant trade for those that held most appeal, especially to the pinhooking fraternity, but an altogether different story for those deemed not to be as commercial. Suggesting otherwise would be foolhardy as it is very much the case in the times in which we live.”

He added, “We probably enjoyed a post pandemic bounce last year in terms of numbers with the expansion to three days for the first time since 2018 and so this year's two-day affair was always going to show a reduced turnover. However, it is interesting to note that the median price remained the same as 2022 which demonstrates a consistency to the market for a sale in which the size of the entry is largely reactive to the autumn sales.

“Trade for the breeding stock session mirrored the weanlings with keen competition for some and less interest in others but we have been pleased to welcome another strong overseas contingent to Kildare Paddocks who are enticed year after year by the enduring quality of Irish bloodlines and the endeavours of ITM working alongside the Goffs Buyer Recruitment Team and our excellent international agents.

“The market leading status of Goffs February has been confirmed once again with the highest February prices for Flat weanling, NH weanling and breeding stock with the latter recording the fourth best price for this sale and the best since 2014. As ever, we extend our thanks to each vendor and all our purchasers for we are nothing without them.”

Baroda Stud were responsible for two of the three six-figure lots on day one of the Goffs February Sale, including the €115,000 top lot, a colt by Sottsass (Ire), who was purchased by Tally-Ho Stud.

Of the 2017 lots offered, 128 were sold, which represented a clearance rate of 59% and an aggregate spend of €2,056,250. The average for day one of first sale for 2023 at Goffs was €16,064 with Cox explaining that the nice horses had no trouble in finding new homes.

He said, “A few people said to me that the horses we had here stood out. The Sottsass was a good, straightforward colt who had good X-rays and a good scope. He was a homebred of China Horse Club and sold very well to Tally-Ho Stud. He'd plenty of fans–he had six or seven vets and there was plenty of action on him.”

Baroda offered 11 horses on Wednesday, of which nine were sold to the tune of €321,000 at an average of €35,667. They included another China Horse Club homebred by New Bay (GB) (lot 186), knocked down to Camas Park for €85,000, and a Magna Grecia (Ire) filly (lot 200) snapped up by MAB Agency for €58,000.

Cox added, “The New Bay was another homebred by China Horse Club and the sire is flying so he definitely attracted plenty of attention before selling to Camas Park. The Magna Grecia filly was lovely. She's a homebred by the Niarchos family and the half-sister [Burning Topic (Ger) (Ulysses {Ire})] is doing well in France.”

He added, “This is a sale where, if you put a good foal in here, it will stand out and sell well. We're happy with how the day went.”

Rogues Snap Up Night Of Thunder Colt

One of the major subplots to the 2022 sale season was the strength of Night Of Thunder (Ire)'s progeny at public auction and the Rogue's Gallery Syndicate, best known for owning listed winner Rogue Millennium (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), gave €110,000 for a colt by the Darley sire.

The Night Of Thunder colt was consigned by Ringfort Stud and signed for by the syndicate's Tony Elliott, who was standing alongside bloodstock agent Billy Jackson-Stops. Elliott revealed that lot 109 would be offered for resale later in the year.

He said, “This horse has been bought to pinhook. We had three for pinhooking last year and we've three this year as well. We've got some nice horses.”

Elliott added, “We thought he was the standout and it was exactly what we wanted to give for him. That would have been our last bid I reckon.

“We're really pleased to get him because he's a lovely-looking horse and, being by Night Of Thunder, he could be anything. Sometimes we buy them back into the syndicate, which we did last year with a Zoustar (Aus).

“If we really like this lad and he's going the right way we could look at buying him back into the syndicate. There's two syndicates–a pinhooking syndicate and a racing one. We've got some nice horses for the coming years.”

Shared Wish For Shamrock Thoroughbreds And Team Valor

The Joseph O'Brien-trained Dundalk winner Tosen Wish (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) (lot 35) provided some early interest when selling for €100,000 to Shamrock Thoroughbreds and Team Valor.

Tosen Wish overcame a 469-day absence to win a seven-furlong handicap off 82 at Dundalk last week, justifying 9-4 favouritism in the process.

The 4-year-old, who is now two from three, boasts a rating of 89 and will be aimed at a turf campaign by Ado McGuinness, according to the trainer's assistant Stephen Thorne.

He said, “Tosen Wish won well on the polytrack at Dundalk last week. He'd been off for a good while but we made plenty of enquiries about him and put the picture together and I think he's a nice lightly-raced horse moving forward. We've partnered up with Team Valor on this one so it is an exciting new partnership and hopefully he will be lucky for us.”

Asked how the new partnership with Barry Irwin's Team Valor came about, Thorne added, “We made contact with him and we've had a few conversations with him. He's obviously seen the success Ado has had on the track. He's a dual Group 1-winning trainer now and we're delighted to have Team Valor on board. We were waiting to find the right type of horse to pitch to Barry and he obviously liked him. He was a standout at this sale by a mile. I thought we'd get him a little cheaper but there was strong competition in the ring. We've no major plans but I think he'll be a nice horse for the turf.”

Tosen Wish was consigned by Castlebridge, who also offered the placed Arabian Legend (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) (lot 37), sold for €48,000 to Italian owner Mr. Ciampoli to be trained by Grizzetti Galoppo.

Another horse with form, the Cormac Farrell-trained and consigned Seven Hills (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) (lot 40C), who placed a couple of times at Dundalk, sold for €40,000 to the New Racing Factory.

Walk In The Park Colt Comes Up Trumps

The Flat-bred weanlings may have dominated but once again the progeny of Walk In The Park (Ire) proved to be in high demand with Coolmore's Gerry Aherne going to €56,000 to secure a well-bred colt (lot 209) by the sire from Thistledown Stud.

The colt is out of a sister to Felix Desjy (Fr) (Maresca Sorrento {Fr}), a classy performer for Gigginstown House Stud and Gordon Elliott at one point, and was the highest-priced National Hunt-bred lot through the ring on Wednesday.

With a selection of quality Flat and National Hunt weanlings, 2-year-olds, horses in training and breeding stock on offer, there was little surprise that Goffs chief executive Henry Beeby said the February Sale features something for every type of buyer on Wednesday and Thursday.

The first live sale of 2023 at Goffs, the February sale boasts 447 lots including supplementary entries, with leading pinhookers and buyers reported to be on the ground inspecting the stock on Tuesday.

Beeby described himself as optimistic of a productive trade over the two days, pointing to the opportunity available to every buyer, including the British and Irish pinhookers who have done notably well at the February Sale in recent years.

He said, “We have a good mixed catalogue and we are coming back after a strong autumn so we are hopeful of picking up where we left off. There are plenty of opportunities for pinhookers here and all of the professionals have been here on Monday inspecting the stock and working their way through the catalogue.

“There is a really good bunch of yearlings and there are some great opportunities for buyers here, as there has been in the past. Hopefully there will be plenty of interest. I expect that the fashionably-bred horses will sell well and it might get a bit skinnier underneath that but there will be plenty of opportunity for people, that's for sure.”

A good recent example of pinhookers picking out profit at this sale came last year when the WH Bloodstock team turned their €38,000 Kuroshio (Aus) colt into a £120,000 smash hit at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale. That tremendous touch was secured in just over six months and Beeby says that he is confident similar opportunities await buyers this year.

He added, “I've looked at a good few horses today for Wednesday and Thursday, some who were meant to be here in November but didn't make it for minor reasons, so this sale is a good backup plan for the vendors of those types of horses as this is a vibrant sale. Pinhookers always make sure to be here for the February Sale and there is a notably strong contingent of English buyers present. We've a good selection of National Hunt youngsters, too, so it is a sale that will appeal to a broad spectrum of people. We are hoping for a good start to the year.”

The two-day February Sale kicks off at 10 a.m. on Wednesday with a Berkshire (Ire) half-brother to recent Grade 1-placed Adamantly Chosen (Ire) and Galileo (Ire) mares Myzoon (Ire), Art Story (Ire), Music And Dance (GB), Sweet And Lovely (Ire) and Red Azalea (Ire) some of the interesting lots on offer.

Breeding rights in young stallions Profitable (Ire) and Cloth Of Stars (Ire) will go under the hammer at Goffs Online during their February Sale from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10.

Standing at Kildangan Stud for €9,000, Profitable, winner of the G1 King's Stand S. at Royal Ascot, is the only stallion with multiple sprinting group winners from his 3-year-old crop. After siring the G2 Queen Mary S. winner in his freshman year, he covered 116 mares last season. With a stud fee of €7,000 at Haras du Logis, European Champion Older Horse Cloth of Stars won the G1 Prix Ganay and was placed twice in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Henry Beeby, Goffs Group Chief Executive said, “We are pleased to offer breeding rights to two exceptional young sires via our proven Goffs Online platform. This online sale enhances the extensive offering at next week's Goffs February Sale and we invite breeders wishing to offer a breeding right to contact any member of the Goffs team.”
