Part of The Castlebridge Consignment, the bay (lot 385) is out of Wild Mix (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and sold to Johnny Murtagh and Linehan Bloodstock for €50,000. Since the catalogue was published, Caught U Looking won the G3 Park S. Under the second dam are group winners Double Or Bubble (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and Mix And Mingle (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}).

Lot 447, a colt by Sottsass (Fr) offered by Treadstone Bloodstock, brought €37,000 from Hana Polednikova to take second place on the leaderboard. He is a half-brother to the GIII Sweet Life S. third Nimbostratus (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}).

After the conclusion of the first day's trade, 173 horses sold of 246 offered (70%) for a gross of €1,367,600. Both the average and the median dropped by 16% and 17%, respectively. The average was €7,906 and the median was €5,000.

The sale continues on Thursday and begins at 10 a.m.

Consigned by Noel O'Callaghan's Mountarmstrong Stud, lot 663 is a granddaughter of the G3 Prix du Bois winner Ela Merici (Fr)  (Beaudelaire {Fr}) and was bought by the father-and-son team of Con and Neil Sands of Bronson Racing. The filly will be trained by Joseph O'Brien, who currently trains Bronson Racing's 92-rated winning juvenile Goa Gajah (Bay A Bali {Brz}).

A Mehmas (Ire) colt (lot 481) and a filly by his sire Acclamation (GB) (lot 609) each made €70,000. Oghill House Stud consigned the former, who caught the eye of Bobby O'Ryan. His great granddam was Dead Certain (GB) (Absolom {GB}), the winner of the 1989 G1 Cheveley Park S.

Lot 609, out of a Smart Strike half-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hero Hootenanny (Quality Road), was purchased by Jack Davison Racing from the Rathbarry Stud draft.

Thursday's trade resulted in 199 sold (76%) from 263 offered for a gross of €1,863,000. The average was €9,362 (-30%) and the median was €5,500 (-45%). Overall, 394 yearlings (77%) sold from 512 offered for a gross of €3,705,400. The average was €9,405 (-33%) and the median dropped to €5,500 (-39%), but it should be noted that the 2021 edition of the sale included a dispersal from Derrinstown Stud following the death of Shadwell's Sheikh Hamdan.

BBA Ireland was the leading buyer by gross over the two-day stand just like last year, and purchased 24 head for €264,300. Clare Manning's Boherguy Stud edged out David Cox's Baroda Stud for leading consignor, with 18 sold for €290,500 versus 26 sold for €236,500.

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “You're only as good as your last sale” is an oft used adage when analysing bloodstock sales and we are all guilty of only measuring against the immediate predecessor.

“Twelve months ago the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale benefited from a large dispersal from Derrinstown Stud following the sad passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum who was such a valued and revered supporter of Goffs. That draft accounted for a quarter of the turnover with eight of the top 10 prices and propelled the sale to record breaking levels headed by a top price of €180,000.

“Those lofty heights were always going to be out of reach and so it is that the statistics from the last two days are well behind 2021. However we are far from despondent when reviewing this year's renewal as it has finished ahead of every other incarnation of the Open/Autumn Yearling Sale since its inception in 2010 with a second-best turnover, average and median flowing from a reasonable clearance rate of 77%. Whilst some of these figures do not necessarily point to massive returns for breeders, they do demonstrate a vibrancy to the proceedings and those that appealed most had plenty of admirers.

“Demand over the two days has been driven by a truly international buying bench with a flood of overseas buyers headed by a large group from Italy who accounted for nigh on 100 yearlings and another strong contingent from Eastern Europe who bought over 50 with a further 20 plus heading for China. There were also significant parties from Scandinavia, Germany, the Gulf Region, Libya, USA and France taking on spirited bidders from the UK and Ireland. All of these international visitors were attracted to Kildare Paddocks by the reputation of Irish breeders and their world class bloodlines which allow our passionate Purchaser Attraction Team, working in tandem with our network of international agents and the team at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, to trumpet their attributes on the global stage. How lucky we are to have the assistance of the latter group as they provide an invaluable and unique service to those who choose to sell here whilst the superb IRE Incentive is a real plus for sellers in Ireland.

Leading the way on the second day of the sale was lot 534, a son of Invincible Spirit (Ire) out of the Arcano (Ire) mare Tamadhor (Ire), who had placed twice at the listed level in England and ran fourth in the G3 Desmond S. From the extended family of G2 Cherry Hinton S. winner Memory (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), herself the dam of group winners Call To Mind (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), Learn By Heart (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Recorder (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), the Shadwell Estate-bred was knocked down to BBA Ireland/Yulong Investments for €92,000.

The BBA Ireland/Yulong team also shelled out €78,000 for Derrinstown's Lope de Vega (Ire) colt (lot 473), also bred by Shadwell. In the money in three of her four starts, the winning dam Saraha is a daughter of French listed heroine Kareemah (Ire) (Peintre Celebre). Kareemah, in turn, is a half-sister to outstanding Shadwell luminary and G1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf victress Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}). One of Lahudood's daughters, the listed winner Aghareed (Kingmambo), is the dam of undefeated, budding superstar Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who won the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. on QIPCO British Champions Day last month after taking the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp earlier in the year.

Rounding out the Derrinstown-consigned and Shadwell Estate-bred trio was a filly by Awtaad (Ire) out of Zaakhir (Ire) (lot 592) who caught the eye of Joe Foley at €78,000. Out of a winning Raven's Pass half-sister to G3 Ballycorus S. winner Convergence (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), the brown filly is from the same family as Group 1 winners Matterhorn (Ire) (Raven's Pass) and Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}).

Interrupting the Shadwell domination was lot 653, a filly by reverse shuttle stallion Starspangledbanner (Aus), who was purchased by Kevin Ross Bloodstock for €80,000. Bred by Kevin J. Molloy, consigned by Ballybin Stud and produced by the unraced Callisto Star (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), the May foal is a sister to the placed Rhea Moon (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). Her second dam, the three-time winner Livia Galilei (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is a full-sister to Eye of the Storm (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and a half to dual Group 3 winner Satchem (Ire) (Inchinor {GB}), and the stakes-winning and group-placed Mohican Heights (Ire) (Australia {GB}).

After the final horse in the ring, 237 yearlings were offered and 218 sold (92%) for a gross of €2,928,900. The average and median both enjoyed sizable increases at €13,435 (+120%) and €10,000 (+100%), respectively. The statistics for the two-day sale as a whole were similarly bullish, with 92%, or 431 yearlings finding new homes from 471 offered. Overall the aggregate totaled €6,080,400, with an average of €14,108 (+119%) and the median was €9,000 (+105%).

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “The 2021 yearling sales season has certainly rebounded in some style as highlighted by the massive gains recorded at our Orby and Sportsman's Sales a few weeks ago. However I don't think anyone could have predicted the strength, buoyancy and gains of the last two days.

Of course, the highlight has been the one-off draft from Derrinstown which accounted for 24% of takings and we feel privileged to have handled these classy yearlings from the estate of the late Sheikh Hamdan who was such a wonderful and respected supporter of our sales. His consignment would have graced any catalogue and naturally dominated the leader board with eight of the Top 10 prices.

However even without the Derrinstown stars the Autumn Sale has been a cracker with a stunning 92% clearance rate and statistics that comfortably surpassed all recent renewals of this sale to underline the vibrancy of the Goffs yearling season. Take them away and the two days still enjoyed a 76% rise in average and a 320% leap in turnover to clearly illustrate the strength throughout.

Taking top billing on Wednesday was a Zoffany (Ire) filly out of Watsdaplan (Ire) (Verglas {Ire}) (lot 456), who has had two winners from two to race and is a half-sister to GI Beverly D.S. winner Watsdachances (Ire) (Diamond Green {Fr}). Consigned by Glacken View Stud, she was bought by Al and Bill Ulwelling, bidding online from America, for €33,000. The Ulwellings also bought fillies by Lawman (Fr) and Fast Company (Ire) on Tuesday.

The top-priced colt of the session was Airlie Stud’s son of Sea The Moon (Ger) (lot 317) bought by BBA Ireland and Stamina Turf for €31,000, while a first-crop daughter of Profitable (Ire) (lot 399) made €20,000 from Aoife Dunphy.

Upon the conclusion of the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale, Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “Adaptability. That is one of the key words that sums up the bloodstock industry throughout this awful pandemic as all of us have had to react and adapt to circumstances that have been both out of our control and unlike anything we have experienced.

“The last two days have been a very clear example of reacting and adapting as a purely online sale, devoid of both horses and people, was never a first preference but was forced upon us by the latest Irish restrictions and the need of vendors to sell into the market place. Originally we had planned to hold the sale in January in the hope that the situation would have improved enough to hold a live sale with the usual participants in Kildare Paddocks, and we will still provide that option if the market wants it, but it became clear that the majority of vendors desired the opportunity provided by Goffs Online. Indeed, we salute the flexibility and positivity in which so many have approached the last two days and feel that the decision was vindicated by a level of trade which, although far from a cause for celebration, was acceptable in the current climate.

“We have taken 2,261 bids via Goffs Online, backed up by a lot of telephone activity, and that has led to 10% advances in the average and median although the turnover is obviously well down as we offered a significantly smaller number than 12 months ago. That said, a 62% clearance rate demonstrates the challenges for the market, but it should be noted that part of the service provided was to allow breeders the chance to qualify for 2021 Auction Races and we are grateful to both HRI and BHA for making the necessary alterations to the criteria to allow these yearlings to be eligible; obviously those ‘vendor’ sales are not included in the clearance rate we quote.

“The Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale has always relied heavily on overseas participation and Goffs Online has really come into its own over the two days with buyers from Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Kuwait, Poland, Serbia, Sweden, UK and the U.S. The user friendly nature of this platform has made it very easy for them to engage at a time when travel is not possible and we wish all of them the best of luck with their latest Goffs purchases.

“So, whilst we will not look back on the 2020 renewal of the Autumn Yearling Sale with any affection, we extend our thanks to everyone who has helped the sale take place and, like the whole world, we just hope and pray that a degree of normality will return soon as there’s nothing like the Goffs sales ring when it is buzzing with horses, people and bids.”

Boherguy Stud’s New Approach (Ire) colt out of Neophilia (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) (lot 192) had originally been slated for the Goffs Sportsman’s Sale, but connections opted for this spot when that sale was moved to Doncaster. While this sale was subsequently forced online, the Apr. 30 foal enjoyed a significant update in the interim, with Gear Up (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) under his third dam having won the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud on Oct. 24. E Hannon went to €40,000 for the fourth foal out of the mare, who has produced the winning New Vocation (Ire) from two foals to race. The colt is bred on the same cross as this year’s G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy scorer Mac Swiney (Ire), and also shares his breeder, Jim Bolger. The New Approach colt is also from the same family as the Bolger-bred, Boherguy-consigned Teofilo (Ire) colt that topped the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale at £325,000, he being a full-brother to Gear Up.

Earlsfort Bloodstock went to €30,000 for an Oasis Dream (GB) colt out of the listed-placed Maybe Grace (Ire) (Hawk Wing) (lot 290), who has produced two winners from three runners and is a half-sister to Australian Group 1 winner Magic Hurricane (Ire) (Hurricane Run {Ire}).

The first-crop yearlings by Yeomanstown Stud’s Scat Daddy sire El Kabeir have been well received this season, and his name also featured among the top lots at this sale when Noel Meade went to €29,000 for Eyrefield Lodge Stud’s colt out of the listed-placed Bee Eater (Ire) (lot 157). That daughter of Green Desert has produced the G3 Marble Hill S. winner Minaun (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) among her eight runners and five winners. The third dam is the champion 3-year-old filly Marwell (Habitat).

The top-priced filly of the session was Tullogher House Stud’s first crop daughter of Ardad (Ire) (lot 86) who was bought by Con Marnane for €20,000. The dam Dame Shirley (GB) (Haafhd) is a full-sister to G3 Meydan Sprint winner Fityaan (GB).

The first day of the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale saw horses sold online to Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Kuwait, Poland, Serbia, Sweden and the UK, with 1225 online bids placed in addition to telephone bids. The second session of the sale begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
