Francis-Henri Graffard trainee Calandagan (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}–Calayana {Fr}, by Sinndar {Ire}) finished 3-4-of-a-length behind Bright Picture (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) in Saint-Cloud's Listed Prix Francois Mathet last month and exacted revenge on that rival in Sunday's G3 Prix Noailles at ParisLongchamp.

The Aga Khan's homebred gelding was out twice as a 2-year-old, following up an Aug. 12 debut third at Deauville with a facile 10-length tally at Chantilly in October. Calandagan tucked in at the tail of the field after breaking from the outside stall and was urged closer once into the home straight. Making headway to launch his challenge with 300 metres remaining, the 13-5 second favourite gained an edge soon after and found extra under continued rousting inside the final furlong to defeat Bright Picture by an ultimately comfortable 1 3/4 lengths. Francois Mathet third Trafalgar Square (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) made it a gelding trifecta and ran on well in the closing stages to finish 1 1/2 lengths adrift in third.

“He had come on a lot from his first run this year and I was expecting a good performance,” revealed Graffard. “It was the plan to ride him [from behind] like that, as he can be keen, but he also has a strong acceleration. I like how he behaved when he was challenged by the favourite [Bright Picture], he dug in and found more. I have no idea what will be next. He is a gelding so Classics are not for him, but he is a Group winner now and that is a good point.”

Pedigree Notes
Calandagan, who becomes the 23rd pattern-race scorer for his sire (by Galileo {Ire}), is the second foal and leading performer from two winners produced by G3 Prix Minerve second Calayana (Fr) (Sinndar {Ire}), herself a granddaughter of Listed Prix Isola Bella second Clodovina (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}). Clodovina, in turn, is the dam of GI Belmont Derby Invitational runner-up Canndal (Fr) (Medicean {GB}). She is also kin to G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains-winning sire Clodovil (Ire) (Danehill), GSW GI Arlington Million third Colombian (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) and to the dam of G1 SA Derby hero Aragosta (SAf) (Rafeef {Aus}). The January-foaled homebred bay is half to a 2-year-old filly by New Bay (GB) and a yearling filly by Zarak (Fr).

13.45 Cork, Cond, €22,000, 3yo, 7fT
ONE LOOK (IRE) (Gleneagles {Ire}) faces the starter for only the second time on this seasonal debut, but has already made a big impact by winning the Goffs Million on what was a stunning racecourse bow. Not only did she collect the huge purse, but she did so by six lengths from Ballydoyle's G2 Lowther S. runner-up Cherry Blossom (Ire) (No Nay Never), who had previously been beaten just over two lengths in the G1 Cheveley Park S. Entered by Paddy Twomey in the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas as well as the G1 Irish Oaks, Connolly Racing Syndicate's bargain €65,000 Orby purchase faces a straightforward task in this weak five-runner affair consisting of peers several levels below her sensational debut form.

Aidan O'Brien's 2024 Flat Turf campaign got off to a perfect beginning at The Curragh on Monday as the 3-year-old filly Brilliant (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}–Plying, by Hard Spun) flew the flag in the G3 Lodge Park Stud Irish EBF Park Express S.

Runner-up in the G3 Newtownanner Stud Irish EBF S. over this mile trip and track and third in the seven-furlong G3 Weld Park S. also here last term, the 7-2 second favourite was steadied towards the rear early by Declan McDonogh and crept into contention once straightened for home. Getting to the front a furlong out, the 1000 Guineas entry had to battle on the testing surface to see off fellow 3-year-old Alpheratz (Ire) (Phoenix Of Spain {Ire}) but proved up to the task to prevail by half a length.

“I think she probably had the best form in the race and, on her first run of the year, I'm delighted with her,” O'Brien said. “She'd been working nicely and is a hardy filly. It's a big call for three-year-olds against older horses on that ground at this time of the year. She'll step up and a mile is good for her. That will be her trial and she'll go into one of the Guineas now after that. She might end up going to Newmarket and back here. She doesn't really want that ground, but she went in it.”

ARROW EAGLE (FR) (Gleneagles {Ire}) made an instant impression at this track last month and is turned out again at the venue that saw the launch of his illustrious half-brother Ace Impact (Ire) (Cracksman {GB}) 12 months ago.

Oisin Murphy continued his red-hot streak of success around the world with a first trip to Mumbai yielding a victory in the Indian 1000 Guineas aboard heavy favourite Jendayi (Ind) (Gleneagles {Ire}). The same connections scored a race prior in the R J Kolah Trophy with Chamonix (Ind) (Dunaden {Fr}), landing Murphy and Jendayi's conditioner Pesi Shroff the double.

The jockey follows a similar path Richard Hughes enjoyed in riding a Classic winner for the decorated local trainer, who lays claim to the remarkable achievement of winning both the Indian 1000 and 2000 Guineas in 2009 and then claiming both the Indian Oaks and Derby a year later.

“It was great to come out here,” said Murphy. “I actually rode for the same connections as Richard Hughes was successful for with Jacqueline a couple of years ago when she won all the Classics.

He added: “Both my rides won and I really enjoyed the experience in Mumbai. The track here is excellent and the people have been incredibly hospitable and made me really welcome.”

A pair of colts by Kodiac (GB) and 34 other yearlings will go under the hammer at the ThoroughBid Online Yearling Sale on Wednesday, Nov. 8. Bidding for the first ever online-only yearling sale by a UK auction house will begin at 9 a.m. and will last approximately three hours. The catalogue is available here.

Yearlings by sires like New Bay (GB), Gleneagles (Ire), Farhh (GB), and Highland Reel (Ire) will also feature among the consigned horses. Each lot is sold with the opportunity to win the £5,000 Every 1's A Winner Bonus, to qualify for which the horses sold must win on debut aged two or three in a Flat race in any IFHA territory.

CEO of ThoroughBid, James Richardson, said, “It's a real pleasure to be the first UK-based auction house to host an online-only yearling sale. The reception this sale has had from established figures in the industry, like David and Mick Easterby, has been positive and we're delighted with the catalogue, which features some very nice pages.

“The fact that the catalogue has a host of well-proven, quality stallions represented and plenty of black-type running through the pedigrees is testament to the appetite for online sales. The importance of horse welfare as well as the ease and economy of selling online for our consignors is clear.

“Given there are no barriers to overseas bidders, and the offer of a £5,000 bonus to any debut winners in IFHA countries, we're expecting to see interest from all corners of the globe.”

Three-time group winner Insinuendo (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}-Obama Rule {Ire}), by Danehill Dancer {Ire}) will be offered at the upcoming Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale which takes place Nov. 24-25. The 6-year-old out of Group 3-winning Obama Rule will be consigned by Rathbride Stables on behalf of her trainer Willie McCreery, who purchased her at the 2018 Goffs Orby Sale from breeders Mountarmstrong Stud for €110,000.

Owned by the Deegan Racing Syndicate, Insinuendo's most recent win was in the G3 Park Express S. at the Curragh this past March, a race in which she finished second to G1 1000 Guineas winner Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) a year prior.

In addition to winning the 2021 G2 Kilboy Estate S. at the Curragh and the G3 Blue Wind S. at Naas in the same season, she was a neck second to MG1SW Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in last year's G3 Royal Whip S. at the Curragh and third behind Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the 2022 G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. at Ascot.

“We are thrilled to add another multiple group-winning mare to what is a simply mouth-watering catalogue for the November Breeding Stock Sale, and I extend our thanks to the connections of Insinuendo for entrusting Goffs with her sale, said Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby. “The international interest in this year's sale, which will be headed by the iconic Niarchos draft, is huge and we are proud to add Insinuendo to the top tier mares awaiting buyers at Kildare Paddocks next month.”

The Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale catalogue, which will be available online Oct. 17, is headed by The Niarchos Draft of 43 regally-bred mares which includes Classic winner Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) in foal to Sea The Stars and G1 Coronation S. winner Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ire}) in foal to Frankel.

In this series, the TDN takes a look at notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column is highlighted by the victory of Hong Kong Harry at Santa Anita last week.

Hong Kong Harry Returns A Winner In City Of Hope

Prolific graded winner Hong Kong Harry (Ire) (Es Que Love {Ire}) returned to winning ways in Santa Anita's GII City of Hope Mile S. for trainer Phil D'Amato and owners Scott Anastasi, Jimmy Ukegawa and Tony Valazza at the end of September (video). It was his fourth win at the graded level since being transferred to the U.S. in March of 2022.

Bred by Amarath Business Management out of the multiple stakes-placed Vital Body (Fr) (Gold Away {Ire}), the 6-year-old gelding won multiple handicaps in the UK, and was a £185,000 Goffs London Sale buy-back during his time with owner/trainer Richard Fahey in 2021. When he was reoffered by the trainer later that year at the 2021 Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale, he made 85,000gns from Craig Rounsefell's Boomer Bloodstock. Vital Body has also thrown the stakes-placed Body Sculpt (Fr) to the cover of Kendargent (Fr) and her latest is a weanling filly by Starman (GB). This is the same clan as G2 Prix du Gros-Chene hero Pradaro (Fr) (Penny's Picnic {Ire}) and Australian Group 1 winner Offer (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).

One of just 80 foals for his sire who was last reported to be standing in France, Hong Kong Harry is his only graded winner and one of two stakes winners besides listed winner Que Amoro (Ire). Es Que Love has two winners from two runners in the U.S.

Gavea Remains Undefeated At Churchill

Bal Mar Equine, LLC's Gavea (Ger) (Gleneagles {Ire}), a debut winner at Chantilly for Christoph Berglar and trainer Waldemar Hickst in July, marked her U.S. unveiling with another victory, this time at Churchill Downs on Sept. 29 (video).

Now trained by Al Stall, Jr., the 2-year-old filly was bred by Stiftung Gestut Fahrhof and was bought back by her vendor for €36,000 out of the BBAG September Yearling Sale after not meeting her reserve. She is a half-sister to a pair of winners and is the last reported foal of her German listed-winning dam, the Oasis Dream (GB) mare Goiania (GB). Goiania is a half-sister to two stakes winners, the trio all produced by German Group 3 heroine Goathemala (Ger) (Black Sam Bellamy {Ire}).

Gleneagles is quietly accumulating a solid stallion resume with his progeny worldwide, and he is responsible for 13 winners from 19 runners (68%) in the U.S. His American brigade is led by GI Man o'War S. hero Highland Chief (Ire), while Jumbly (GB) was third in the GII Ballston Spa S. and Eylara (Ire) was listed placed in California.

Gold To The North East In California

Sent forward as the even-money favourite Cherry Blossom (Ire) (No Nay Never) made her move passing two out, she swamped that rival at the furlong pole and powered clear for an emphatic introduction.

Paul and Oliver Cole trainee Jack Darcy (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}–Pretty Face {GB}, by Rainbow Quest) seized immediate control of Sunday's G2 Lucien Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville and was never headed in the 12 1/2-furlong feature to complete an afternoon pattern-race treble for the British raiding party.

On the front end from flagfall and leading his rivals in single file, the 54-5 outsider-of-five was scrubbed along off the home turn and kept finding under continued rousting in the straight to hold Al Nayyir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by 1 1/4 lengths for a career best.

Jack Darcy's route to this stakes breakthrough included seven prior attempts at black-type level, adding to a runner-up finish in last term's Listed Prix Nureyev at this Normandy venue with a second in this month's G3 Glorious S. at Goodwood. He lined up for this returning off a sixth-of-seven effort in last week's G3 Geoffrey Freer S. at Newbury. The Cole yard has now annexed six editions of the contest, the run being initiated by MG1SW sire Ibn Bey (GB) (Mill Reef) in 1988.

“We expected a race devoid of pace, we'd talked about it at length with his entourage and the plan was to set a false pace from the front,” explained winning rider Cristian Demuro. “He has a lot of raw talent, so we decided to kick for home early and make it as dificult as possible for the opposition. The trip was something of a question mark and, in a race without too much pace, his stamina was less of a problem. He proved to be very tough, as British horses often are.”

Part-owner Edward Gascoigne added, “Jack Darcy likes to lead and Cristian [Demuro] rode him perfectly. We looked at the entries and the race seemed like a good opportunity. Ollie [Cole] said he was really well and in good form after Newbury, which is why we decided to run and Junko's withdrawal certainly helped. He's tough, but he also has speed. Distance-wise, he's very adept if the pace is right and, if the pace isn't too strong, he can stretch out as he did today. He was in complete control, it's a fantastic victory and we're very happy.”
