Racing for first his breeder, His Highness The Aga Khan, and later on in the blue silks of Godolphin, the 1994 foal was second in the 1996 G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud at two and grabbed a Classic laurel in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains. A trio of top-level placings followed that year, at Ascot in the St James's Palace S., and then back in France in the Prix Jacques le Marois and Prix du Moulin.

In 1998, Daylami's 4-year-old season, he exchanged the Aga Khan's green and red silks for the royal blue of Godolphin and left Alain de Royer-Dupre's yard for Saeed bin Suroor's. Both the G1 Eclipse S. and the GI Man o' War S. in England and the U.S. went his way, and it was at five in 1999 that he enjoyed his greatest season on the racecourse. His first victory of the year was in the Coronation Cup, and three more Group/Grade 1 triumphs followed in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S., the Champion S. at Leopardstown, and in his career swansong, the Breeders' Cup Turf at Gulfstream Park that November. For his efforts, he was named the Cartier Horse of the Year, as well as the Eclipse Champion Grass Horse.

At stud, he sired Classic winner Grey Swallow (Ire) and multiple Group 1 winner Voila Ici (Ire) among his 14 stakes winners. His daughters have foaled 46 stakes winners, including top-level winners Arcano (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}), and Pierro (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}).

A half-brother to G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero and sire Dalakhani (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), Daylami has lived as a pensioner at the Aga Khan Studs at his birthplace in Ireland for the past four years under the care of Joe Doyle. A memorial will commemorate the classy grey at Gilltown Stud in due course.

Co-owner Brae Sokolski told the website that the decision was not final, but that the ownership was leaning in the direction of breeding to the sire that has been represented by the world's top-rated turf horse Baaeed (GB) and the legendary stayer Stradivarius (Ire).

“She'll be served to northern hemisphere time and while no final decision has been made on the stallion, Sea The Stars is probably the most likely suitor,” Sokolski said of last year's Melbourne Cup hero.

“Then we will decide whether to keep her there (Europe) and do it again or bring her back. It's unresolved at the moment.”

Having taken races like the G1 Lexus Melbourne Cup and G1 Caulfield while under the care of Chris Waller, Verry Elleegant was sent to the northern hemisphere this spring to be trained by Francis-Henri Graffard. In four European appearances, the 7-year-old was third in the G2 Qatar Prix Foy and closed her career with an unplaced effort in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies and Mares at Ascot Oct. 15.

Sea The Stars resides at the Aga Khan's Gilltown Stud in Ireland, where he served mares at an advertised fee of €150,000 in 2022.

Success brought a second renewal for both Shadwell and Jim Crowley, who teamed up with Mustashry (GB) (Tamayuz {GB}) in 2019, but it was a first for William Haggas hot on the hooves of a banner week at York's May festival. Baaeed is now set to head to the Knavesmire himself, via Royal Ascot's G1 Queen Anne S., for a first go at 10 furlongs in August's G1 Juddmonte International. The great Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) inhaled both contests in 2012, taking in a G1 Sussex S. along the way.

“He is an absolute pleasure to ride and very straightforward,” beamed Crowley. “Everything went smoothly and it was like clockwork. There was not a lot of pace in the race, but he has such a turn of foot and, if they had gone quicker, it probably would have helped him. He is the most beautifully-bred horse and is everything you want in a racehorse. Nothing seems to faze him and he doesn't appear to have any weaknesses. I can't think of one. He is really bright, he has gears, he relaxes and he stays the mile extremely well. He has got a turn of foot and you couldn't ask for more. You would imagine the Juddmonte International would be tailor-made for him.”

Haggas added, “I have to say I have never been more nervous before a race than I was today. There was a bit of pressure, because all you fellows keep writing nice things about him, but he did it nicely today. I would not go as far as to say he is the best horse in the world–that is the sort of thing others might say–but he has done very well. It was a strongish field, there was a Classic winner in there and two fillies who were very useful last year, so he has done really well. If we step up to a mile-and-a-quarter, and if he stays fit and healthy, we will go for the Juddmonte.”

For long-time Sheikh Hamdan confidant Angus Gold, it was a win of high significance for Shadwell. “You can't underestimate how important he is, he's a massive asset for the operation,” he said. “Since Sheikh Hamdan died we're a smaller operation, as everyone knows, so to get a horse of this class is absolutely fantastic for the family and everyone in Dubai. He worked brilliantly, with two good horses, at Chelmsford the other day and you want to see them do it on their first run back. You are hopeful, obviously, but you never quite know until you see them on the track. For me, and in my experience, it is rare to get a horse of his ability and his temperament. He's just the most charming horse with great character, so he makes everybody's job easy. He's very straightforward.” Allowing himself a moment of reflection, Gold continued, “Sheikh Hamdan adored his breeding and his pedigrees. He loved looking into them and he'd have been thrilled to come up with a horse from that [Height of Fashion] family, most of whom stay well.” Looking ahead, he added, “I'm sure Baaeed will go further if we want to, but I don't think we need to straight away. He's still got the speed for a mile, so we'll stick at that for the time being. The obvious race is the Queen Anne, but I'd love to see him go up to the Juddmonte [International at York] and the [G1] Champion [S. at Ascot]. That would be the perfect way to showcase his versatility.”

Baaeed, the fifth of eight foals, is one of three scorers out of Listed Prix de Liancourt victrix Aghareed (Kingmambo), herself a daughter of MGISW US champion Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}). Lahudood, in turn, is a granddaughter of Listed Cheshire Oaks runner-up Bashayer (Mr. Prospector), herself one of seven black-type performers out of MGSW blue hen Height of Fashion (Fr) (Bustino {GB}). One of the most consistent staying stars of all time, Stradivarius has drawn on his incredible constitution to maintain a level of ability that is still unattainable to much-younger rivals. Spanish Mission had shown when winning the G2 Yorkshire Cup and last year's G2 Doncaster Cup that he is a stayer of considerable merit and he held every chance of subduing the Gosden A-lister with everything to suit but ultimately came up short. With Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) out of action for now, Stradivarius has the opportunity to garner more of these before time is called.

Dettori thinks there is more to come from the 7-year-old. “Every time he's run here I've felt he is below-par–he fell in the last two times he won this for the bonus–and I feel he's much better at Ascot,” he said of the hero of two Yorkshire Cups and the 2018 and 2019 renewals of this race. “He's getting older, he's getting wiser. He got the job done and knows exactly what he's got to do.”

John Gosden added, “He's phenomenal. All those miles of racing. I always think flat horses are at their peak at five, but some of the great jumpers race on so we'll see how he is. He's a very happy horse and he's got a very good sense of humour as well. As long as he's happy, we can keep racing. He was a really angry chap when he came home from Goodwood and hadn't run. He used to sting like a butterfly and float like a bee, but he's a little more rope a dope now! He's still up for it and it was a proper race for everyone to watch between two fabulous horses. The [Sept. 10 G2] Doncaster Cup is a possibility and there is Champions Day, I hope it's decent ground but if it's bottomless we might have to reroute.”

Anna Lisa Balding said of the runner-up, who is bound for the G1 Melbourne Cup, “He's run a hell of a race and I actually thought we'd won when he went ahead. I thought we'd got him, but we didn't. We'll stick to Plan A, Australia here we come and let's hope he does his stuff out there.”
Stradivarius is the last foal out of Private Life (Fr) (Bering {GB}), who was bought by Nielsen for 70,000gns at the 2006 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. “People keep saying he is running good times, but he's just a good horse and keeps doing it,” said trainer William Haggas. “He's sound, healthy and fast. I learnt today that he doesn't need fast ground to be at his best and it confirmed that he is a good horse. Baaeed is a full-brother to Hukum, who stays 14 furlongs, and looking at him, he looks like he is faster than his pedigree suggests. We will stay at a mile for now. He started life on June 7 and it is now July 30. He has had four races and been running in decent company against 3-year-olds. He's in the races that he should be and it is time he took on the better ones in the bigger races. He is entered in the [G1 Prix] Jacques Le Marois, the [G2] Celebration Mile back here and the [G1 Prix du] Moulin. I'm not for running them regularly, but horses are bred to race and I am very happy to run him in a top-class race next time.”

Shadwell's racing manager Angus Gold added, “It looked like he got there very quickly when Jim [Crowley] asked him. He has a fantastic attitude and you've got to think he is a Group 1 horse. Until he proves us wrong, or gets caught out over a mile, there's no point in going up to 10 furlongs. He is very much a 12-furlong horse on pedigree, but you just have to stand behind him and look at his quarters to see where his speed comes from. We are lucky to have him and too much speed is a nice problem to have.”

Reflecting on the performance, rider Jim Crowley commented, “Baaeed has an engine on him and I was quite happy to sit where I was. We had a low draw, but I didn't want to go up the inside and complicate it, especially here at Goodwood. He got into a nice rhythm and, when I pulled him out, I knew I had plenty of horse. We had a few concerns about the good-to-soft ground as he has not gone on it before, but as you could see it was no problem. He is a proper horse and you would like to think that he is a Group 1 horse, but he's got to go and do it. I don't see any reason to step him up in trip at the moment and, from a stallion's point of view, you'd love him to win Groups 1 races over a mile. I am sure, at some stage, he will go up in trip.”

Roger Varian was not downcast in defeat and accepted runner-up El Drama had met with something special. “In trying to stretch the winner, he just tired in the final 100 yards, but we are pleased he held on for second,” the Newmarket trainer said. “We were blown away by the winner, but he ran a nice race. El Drama is a very likeable horse and just shy of the top grade at the moment. I think he will improve with age and will be a nice horse to have in the stable over the next year or two. He is at this level while the winner looked a Group 1 horse.”

Bred in Ireland, Dalakhani was a pure product of the Aga Khan Studs operation, being a son of the Aga Khan's Prix du Jockey Club winner Darshaan out of the Miswaki, blue hen mare, Daltawa.

Through his exceptional race career, Dalakhani won eight of his nine races. He remained unbeaten at two, winning notably the Group 1 Critérium International before going on to win the G1 Prix Lupin, Prix du Jockey Club and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at three under the training of Alain de Royer-Dupré and the ride of Christophe Soumillon. Dalakhani was crowned European Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old in 2003.

H.H. the Aga Khan declared after his final run in Longchamp: “He's outstanding on the basis of what we've seen as a 2-year-old, 3-year-old, over all distances and on all going. It's very difficult to make comparisons, but this horse has a concentration of unusual talents, and that's what gives him the ability to accelerate when he needs to accelerate, to follow a pace when he needs to follow a pace, and to handle all goings.”

Retired to Gilltown Stud in Ireland in 2004, Dalakhani sired 10 Group 1 winners, including classic winners Moonstone (Irish Oaks) and Reliable Man (Prix du Jockey Club), Chinese White (Pretty Polly Stakes), Integral (Falmouth and Sun Chariot Stakes), dual Breeders' Cup Turf winner Conduit and more recently, Coronation Stakes winner Defoe. He is now leaving his mark as a broodmare sire, with notable examples such as recent champion 2-year-old Pinatubo.

Dalakhani was retired from covering duties in 2016 and was enjoying a peaceful retirement at Haras d'Ouilly in Normandy, France.

Heading the Aga Khan’s French stallions at Haras de Bonneval is worldwide sensation Siyouni (Fr), who goes up to €140,000 after two years at €100,000. Siyouni’s seven group winners in 2020 remarkably included four Group 1 winners, headed by Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe scorer Sottsass (Fr) and also including Poule d’Essai des Pouliches victress Dream And Do (Fr), Dewhurst winner St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) and E.P. Taylor S. winner Etoile (Fr).

Standing alongside Siyouni at Bonneval is first-crop yearling sire Zarak (Fr) and Dariyan (Fr), whose first 2-year-olds this year included two black-type performers in France. Zarak and Dariyan, both Group 1 winners, stand at unchanged fees of €12,000 and €8,000, respectively.

“I think what we have seen here today is a Group 1 filly,” said winning trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, who sent out Luna Kya (Fr) (Kendor {Fr}) to win this in 2001 and subsequent MGISW distaffer Zagora (Fr) (Green Tune) in 2010. “We knew that before, of course, but we missed the opportunity to win a big one in the Diane where she had an awful trip and didn’t have enough experience to get herself out of trouble. We have been in racing long enough to know that these things happen. The pace was good today and the further she was going the more she was opening up on the rest.”

Rouget is now zoning in on targets back at the highest level with October’s G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe the ultimate goal this year. “For me, she is the best French filly around and she’s not even running over her distance. We know she is a genuine mile-and-a-half filly, with her second and third dams both being Oaks winners, and the plan is to now go straight to the [Sept. 13 G1 Prix] Vermeille and then the [Oct. 4 G1 Prix de l’] Arc [de Triomphe at ParisLongchamp].”

Raabihah is one of two winners and the leading performer produced by Garmoosha (Kingmambo), who was bred to Noble Mission (GB) this year. The fourth of six foals, she is a half-sister to Listed Wait A While S. third Filfila (Kitten’s Joy), a yearling filly by Kitten’s Joy and a 2020 More Than Ready filly. Her dam is an unraced half to G1 Fillies’ Mile third Firdaws (Mr. Greeley) out of G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Eswarah (GB) (Unfuwain), who in turn is a daughter of MG1SW G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Midway Lady (Alleged). These staying races are fast regaining their prior glory and there are few who would deny that Stradivarius now sits alongside the revered staying greats such as Sagaro (GB), Ardross (Ire) and Yeats (Ire). Nielsen was typically humble when asked for his opinion. “That’s for other people to decide, but I think he deserves to be in the conversation,” he said. “They are rare horses and it’s amazing that he turned up on my doorstep–there is a lot of luck involved.”

Much water has passed under the bridge since Stradivarius played the role of young upstart when denying the dual Goodwood Cup hero Big Orange (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) his own landmark in the 2017 edition of this race. Since that first top-level success, which was followed by a third placing in a strong renewal of the G1 St Leger, he has garnered two £1million Weatherbys Hamilton bonuses and dealt with a list of classy performers in this division including Vazirabad (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}), Torcedor (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), Order of St George (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Dee Ex Bee (GB) (Farhh {GB}) and Cross Counter (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}). Like his stable’s leading lady Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), he seems to have an insatiable appetite for prestige events which shows no sign of diminishing.

Sticking to the inside up the straight as the expertly-ridden Nayef Road set down to see off all-comers, Frankie was going best passing two out but was being leaned on by Eagles By Day (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) which kept him a pocket. As Santiago took on the Mark Johnston front-runner, Ballydoyle’s 3-year-old may have been briefly ahead but Silvestre de Sousa conjured more from Nayef Road to re-assert. Stradivarius had meanwhile muscled his way out into the clear and when he needed his trademark acceleration to overwhelm that duo it was as potent as ever.

Just as he had in 2019, Dettori was revelling in completing a high-profile double in less than a week, supplementing the high he experienced on Saturday with Enable. “What a horse. He’s given 15 pounds away, everyone rode to beat me and he still gets out and wins,” he commented. “He’s an amazing horse and well done to Bjorn Nielsen. I go from a superstar mare in Enable to this champion horse in three days. It’s the stuff of dreams. I just had to be patient and when you have good horses the gap will come. I’ve been in that position before and it’s not nice to be there, but we got out.”

“Obviously, I thought the biggest danger was Santiago, so I was trying to get behind him. I thought, with a 15-pound weight spread, he would try to make the most of it and probably make it a true test from four out but it turned into a two-furlong sprint,” he added. “For a minute I was boxed in, but if you want to sprint with Stradivarius you’ve got to be pretty good. For a furlong he took a little bit of organising, then he was amazing–he can put two lengths on any horse in a furlong. It’s amazing for a stayer. I really did not expect the race to turn out like that, only sprinting for two furlongs. He’s so good and so versatile, he can get me out of trouble. I’m still floating from the King George, so I have to pinch myself that this is actually happening. To do it again this year is amazing.”

John Gosden said, “The key thing when you’re tracking a horse like Santiago, who is in receipt of 15 pounds, is not to attack two and a half to three furlongs down and turn it into a real slog. Nayef Road ran a blinder again right beside us and I think it was right to wait. When he hits the front now, he thinks that’s it. It was a great performance under that weight. He has a great heart, is very cool and relaxed. Mr Neilsen and I have discussed it and he will run in the Prix Foy next and then be aimed at the Arc.”

Despite his multitude of accomplishments in this sphere, the winner’s prospects of a successful career at stud remains a sticking point for his owner-breeder. “The demand for him commercially isn’t there, as horses who have won just group one over a mile would command more of a stud fee,” Nielsen said. “That’s just the way it is, the trends and the fashion but hopefully it reverts and people will wake up.”

Stradivarius’s dam Private Life (Fr) (Bering {GB}) had no other offerings after him, but her 70,000gns purchase at the 2006 Tattersalls December Mares Sale has reaped rich dividends. Also responsible for the G3 Bavarian Classic and G3 Furstenberg-Rennen scorer Persian Storm (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) and the group-placed Rembrandt Van Rijn (Ire) (Peintre Celebre), she hails from the family of the G1 Melbourne Cup hero Protectionist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) and descends from Pawneese (Ire). Horse of the Year in England and champion 3-year-old filly in France in 1976 courtesy of her triumphs in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. and the G1 Prix de Diane, she is also the ancestress of the brilliant Peintre Celebre.
