The New York Gaming Commission has suspended Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher 14 days and fined him $2,000 after a horse he trained tested positive for the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory phenylbutazone during a 2022 race at Saratoga.

Via text message, Pletcher said he is appealing the penalty. He declined to comment further.

The Paulick Report was first with the story.

The horse in question, Capensis (Tapit), was the even-money favorite in the 10th race at Saratoga on July 30, 2022 and finished sixth. He is owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Robert LaPenta, Gainesway Stable, Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC and Stonestreet Stables LLC. He has not run since winning the Sept. 6, 2022 GIII Virginia Derby. A gray colt, he sold for $2 million at the 2020 Keeneland September sale.

The ruling, which was posted to the Gaming Commission's website on Sunday , states that phenylbutazone was present at a concentration in excess of 0.3 micrograms per milliliter in violation of 9 NYCRR 4043.3 (a) (26).

Pletcher is also dealing with another suspension handed down by New York regulators. He was fined $1,000 and suspended 10 days after tests revealed that his trainee Forte (Violence) tested positive for Meloxicam following his win in the GI Hopeful S. last summer at Saratoga. Pletcher has appealed that suspension, as well.

In addition, Pletcher is facing two possible violations in Florida, where, according to Florida Gaming Control Commission Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering records posted online, he had a Class IV and Class V drug positive in December. According to reports, the Pletcher-trained Mind Control (Stay Thirsty) tested positive following the Sept. 24 Parx Dirt Mile, in which he was initially awarded the victory through disqualification. That case is also pending.

Asked why the New York case was just now coming to light, Brad Maione, the Director of Communications for the New York Gaming Commission said the following in an email to the TDN.

“By practice and procedure, when there is a possible rule infraction or violation, the Stewards set a time to meet, providing an affected party the informal opportunity address the matter. Following the meeting, the Stewards collectively evaluate potential rule infractions and, if appropriate, the State Steward will issue a ruling.

“Changes to the split-sample procedures have been instituted to reduce the ability of an affected party to game the system. Absent extraordinary circumstances, a trainer advised of a positive drug violation will now be afforded no more than two-weeks to identify and make arrangements for the split-sample to be tested…

Finally, you should be aware that the procedural processing of split-samples has remained constant since initiation. The Commission does not announce medication infractions until considered by the judges or stewards. As of Friday morning, there were three Thoroughbred and two Standardbred split-samples outstanding at a qualified, accredited independent laboratories. The Commission is awaiting return of their findings.”

5th-Gulfstream, $70,000, Msw, 3-12, 3yo, 7 1/2fT, 1:29.34, fm, 2 1/2 lengths.
FEARLESS SOLDIER (c, 3, City of Light–Hessie's Girl, by Giant's Causeway) had something of a rough debut Feb. 16 when he tossed his head at the jump and hopped coming out of the stall. Racing all over the synthetic track from there, as far as seven wide in the stretch before lugging in through the final furlong, he finished a very green fourth but producing a field-best Beyer Speed Figure of 74. Cutting back from that 1m70 contest and flopped onto the turf course, the 5-2 second choice broke considerably better but ended up steadied nearing the first bend, settling to track from fifth. Edging closer from three wide around the far turn, he tipped out farther for the homeward drive and closed under left-hand urging to draw clear of long-time leader and 57-1 shocker Checkitup (Curlin), who was a first-time gelding.

Fearless Solider commanded a princely sum of $700,000 at KEESEP from the titan partnership that is Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable. They would later bring Gainesway Stable into the fold before the Triple Crown-nominated colt's first start. Dam Hessie's Girl's 2021 colt by Liam's Map died last year but she did have a 2022 colt by Game Winner. A young half-sister to GISW Bullsbay (Tiznow); GSW Our Khrysty (Newfoundland)–herself claiming GISW Grace Adler (Curlin) and GSP Virginia Key (Distorted Humor) to her broodmare tally; GSP Vegas No Show (Hard Spun); and SW Hidden Expression (Yonaguska), dam of SW Mask (Tapit), Hessie's Girl is due to Charlatan for 2023.

StarLadies Racing, LNJ Foxwoods and Gainesway Stable's Prank (Into Mischef–Callingmissbrown, by Pulpit), a $500,000 half-sister to stablemate and recent GI Belmont S. winner Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo), GISW, $1,511,800, flashed serious speed and ability Sunday to justify 1-2 backing and be named an obvious 'TDN Rising Star'.

Emerging from the pack to seize early command, the Todd Pletcher pupil doled out a swift opening split of :21.91 before leaving High Class (Into Mischief) in the dust through a :45.11 half. From there it was only a question of how far, as Prank hit another gear when given a few reminders by Irad Ortiz, Jr. and scampered away by 9 3/4 lengths in 1:03.94. St. Benedicts Prep (Flatter) was best of the rest.

Pletcher unveiled another 'Rising Star' last Sunday in Into Mischief's granddaughter Kaling (Practical Joke), and Into Mischief was represented by another 'Rising Star' Saturday in the form of Bob Baffert-trained Newgate. The Spendthrift Farm stalwart has now sired 33 runners who earned the publication's nod.

Prank is a granddaughter of GISW and GI Kentucky Oaks runner-up Island Sand (Tabasco Cat), whose progeny include 2017 GI Spinaway S. runner-up Maya Malibu (Malibu Moon). Her dam was a debut winner at four. Callingmissbrown was barren to Catholic Boy for 2021 and lost her Curlin Foal for 2022. She was bred back to Uncle Mo this season.

Live Oak Plantation will send out their $625,000 FTSAUG 2021 procurement from Sam-son Farm in the form of Ticker Tape Home (Medaglia d'Oro) against a large field of 12 juvenile fillies in this sprint contest. In the barn of Mark Casse, and with a slate of sharp works to her credit, including a four furlong breeze over the synthetic track in :47.60 (6/75) June 25, she's been installed at 7-2 for the unveiling. Ticker Tape Home is out of GSW & MGSP Journey Home (War Front), who sold for $650,000 at KEENOV last year to KatieRich Farms, and is the second to the races behind unplaced Determined Empire (Empire Maker), who sold for $240,000 at FTKSEL in 2020. Second dam Soul Search (A.P. Indy) was placed in the GI Juddmonte Spinster and GI Personal Ensign S. before producing seven winners including 11-time victor Bold Shot (Curlin), and is half to GSP Reform Act (Lemon Drop Kid) as well as the dam of multiple stakes-winners Lunar Victory (Speightstown) and The Tea Cups (Hard Spun). This contest kicks off the first of two maiden special weights on the Hallendale card with smartly regarded firsters. Breaking from the far outside, Blini (Tapit) has graded stakes winning shadows to outrun: full-siblings Iron Fist, MGSW, $1,104,199; Anchor Down, GISP & MGSW, $734,254; and half-sister Sweet Lulu (Mr. Greeley), GISW, $693,600. Her dam Successful Outlook (Orientate) is a third generation graded stakes runner and producer. To her inside, there is a Calumet owned and bred half-sister to SW, $865,921, Pingxiang (Speightstown) named Peligroso (Honor Code) going for conditioner Jack Sisterson. The Albaugh Family Stables send out $500,000 KEESEP purchase Tiffany's Mo (Uncle Mo), a half to GSP Threes Over Deuces (Flat Out). Todd Pletcher conditions Falconet (Uncle Mo), the first foal for GISW Birdatthewire (Summer Bird) and the formidable partnership of Klaravich Stables and Chad Brow will unveil $280,000 KEESEP acquisition Signal from Noise (Arrogate). TJCIS PPs

4th-GP, $60k, Msw, 3yo, 7f, 1:40p.m. ET
OXO Equine's $675,000 KEESEP prize Mendenhall (Pioneerof the Nile) debuts under Bill Mott's tutelage. A half to stakes winners Balandeen (Bernardini) and Matwakel (California Chrome), this is the family of Canadian Champion 2-year-old filly Deputy Jane West (Silver Deputy). The royal blue silks of Godolphin are represented by their homebred Town Branch (Street Sense), a full sibling to GSW Speaker's Corner. A $300,000 OBSAPR (:20 3/5) buy, Super Quality (Competitive Edge), and $240,000 EASOCT graduate Hidden Plan (Street Sense), half to GSW Cordmaker (Curlin), round out the field. TJCIS PPs

8th-GP, $62k, Alw, 4yo/up, 1m, 3:40p.m. ET
Stage Raider (Pioneerof the Nile), half-brother to Triple Crown Champion Justify (Scat Daddy) and ill-fated GSW The Lieutenant (Street Sense), makes his return to the races here against an experience field. Second on debut to Prevalence (Medaglia d'Oro), who's also in the field, the colt's 10 3/4 length maiden breaking Apr. 10 score at Keeneland earned him 'TDN Rising Star' honors. He punctuated that title with a three length win against allowance company May 14 at Belmont Park before being given a nine month freshening. He's been set at 7-2 morning line odds for his return. TJCIS PPs

2nd-AQU, $80k, Msw, 3yo, 1m, 1:20p.m. ET
He's out of a half-sister to MGISW Include Me Out (Include) and GISW & MGSW Check the Label (Stormin Fever), both of whom have produced winners.

Less than two full years after striking out on his own, trainer Reeve McGaughey is keeping the family name alive and well by sending his first graded stakes winner across the wire at Aqueduct Racetrack.

A homebred for Gainesway Stable (Antony Beck) and Andrew Rosen, 3-year-old Bees and Honey (by Union Rags) sailed clear of her rivals by 2 3/4 lengths in the Comely Stakes (G3) on Nov. 26. The victory—while not entirely unexpected by McGaughey—helped end the month on a high note for the young trainer whose budding stable is already revving up for more in 2022.

“Going into the race everyone was pretty confident because she was doing well,” said McGaughey. “We had a good feeling that she would like the distance and the racetrack. The way the race shaped up it looked like we had a chance to get black type on her and we would see what happened from there.

“It was fun, but it was almost a little bit of a relief. I certainly enjoyed it. Hopefully, there will be more wins behind it, but it was really nice to get that one.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid=436 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=437 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

From an early age, there was never any real doubt that McGaughey would choose a career that led him too far from the backside. The son of Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey and the nephew of Charlie LoPresti, who trained two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan, McGaughey's life has always been inextricably tied to Thoroughbred racing.

“He is my nephew, but in the years he worked for me I don't think I had anybody that worked as hard in the barn as he did,” said LoPresti, for whom McGaughey worked as an assistant for five years. “He has a real passion for it. All the help respected him so much because he is the first one to jump in and helped. He's an incredible horseman and I was proud for him to be with me. He was like my right and left arms to tell the truth.”

After leaving LoPresti, McGaughey worked in his father Shug's barn until 2020. His decision to strike out on his own came within months of the announcement that LoPresti would retire from racing after almost 30 years—a move that would prove fortuitous for both uncle and nephew.

“It worked out well when I retired that he wanted to go out on his own, so he took most of everything that was in my barn,” said LoPresti. “The horses went, and the help went too because they respected him so much.

“His dad being a Hall of Fame trainer gave him a lot of advice, but I think the advice I had for him was to not get too big and to really concentrate on the horses. But I didn't need to tell him that. He's a hands-on horseman. That's the way he is and the way he's always been. It was a perfect fit and we're so proud of what he's accomplished.”

McGaughey's first win came July 25, 2020, when Nathan Detroit (Union Rags) broke his maiden on debut at Ellis Park. The horse was bred and owned by Joe Allen, a client of his father.

“A good portion of my clients are ones I knew from working with my dad who have also been clients of his, but I also work for a fair amount of people I didn't have a previous relationship with until I started out,” said McGaughey, who continues to build out his stable. “A couple people I work the sales for and a few just send me the horses that they have. It's a mix.”

These days, McGaughey has 25 horses in his barn split between Kentucky and Florida. Ten of those horses currently reside at Tampa Bay Downs with his assistant, while the other 15 remain at Keeneland with him. His statistics through Dec. 17 stand at 24-23-23 from 172 starts with $1,188.054 in earnings.

While Bees and Honey might be his only stakes winner to date, McGaughey feels he has plenty of promising runners to keep him busy on and off the track in the coming months. While he's happy to revel in his recent success, he has no plans to rest on his laurels.

“We have a nice 3-year-old filly who will turn 4 named Texas Shuffle (War Front). We've also got a 3-year-old turning 4 named Charles Chrome (California Chrome), he's stakes-placed and he's coming back off a freshening this winter. He's just now starting back. We also have a few young ones that haven't run yet that we're just getting going with, but they look like they'll have talent.”

“He (Reeve) knows how hard the game is. It has its ups and downs,” said LoPresti. “He's had some tough times and now he's having good times but that is the way the business is. He knows the game because he's been around it since he was a little boy, so he knows how it all works.”

Horse racing fans have spoken, and they have chosen Hot Rod Charlie, the gutsy 3-year-old colt who was a force along the Triple Crown trail, as the winner of the 2021 Secretariat Vox Populi Award. Created by Secretariat's owner Penny Chenery, the award annually recognizes the horse whose popularity and racing excellence best resounded with the general public and gained recognition for Thoroughbred racing.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Emerging as the favorite among the thousands of fans who voted in the year-end online poll, Hot Rod Charlie started the season as a long shot but consistently showed speed and determination that carried him through the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Hot Rod Charlie is owned in a partnership with Boat Racing LLC, Gainesway Stable, Roadrunner Racing, and William Strauss. Trained by Doug O'Neill and piloted by Flavien Prat, he was a surprise winner of the Louisiana Derby and later finished third in the Kentucky Derby and second in the Belmont Stakes, where his blistering fractions in the first quarter-mile rivaled the record-setting pace set in 1973 by Secretariat. Later in the year, Hot Rod Charlie answered an infamous disqualification in the TVG.com Haskell Stakes with a breathtaking comeback in the Pennsylvania Derby, his first graded stakes win.

The Oxbow colt's thrilling performances and his tenacity on the track endeared him to racing fans. Finishing in the money for five of his seven 2021 starts, Hot Rod Charlie tallied more than $2 million in earnings in 2021 and is poised for a sensational 4-year-old season in 2022. Off the track, his owners have donated a portion of Hot Rod Charlie's earnings to causes such as the Melanoma Research Alliance to honor O'Neill family members who had succumbed to the disease, as well as the Folds of Honor Foundation and the Jake Panus Walk-On Football Endowed Scholarship Fund at the University of South Carolina.

“Hot Rod Charlie represents the heart and purpose of the Secretariat Vox Populi Award, and his feel-good story and grit as a competitor remind us why we love racing,” said Kate Chenery Tweedy, family historian and daughter of Penny Chenery. “Traditional awards may overlook his accomplishments, but this award celebrates his endearing connection with fans.”

Greg Helm of Roadrunner Racing, representing Hot Rod Charlie's ownership interests, expressed gratitude for the honor, given the talented field of nominees.

“This colt has given our team such an incredible ride this year, and we are overjoyed he has been recognized as the winner of the Vox Populi Award,” Helm said. “We saw something special in him early on, and 'Charlie' has validated that time and time again. It means so much to us that fans have connected with him too.”

Hot Rod Charlie was one of a select group of six nominees submitted by the Vox Populi Committee and presented to thousands of voters in all 50 states and more than 40 countries who spoke as the “Voice of the People” in the Secretariat.com online poll. Other nominees were Echo Zulu, Essential Quality, Knicks Go, Letruska, and Life is Good. Voters also had the option to write in their own favorite candidate to recognize other exceptional horses.

Hot Rod Charlie now joins a list of cherished racing stars who have also received the Vox Populi Award: Authentic (2020), Bricks and Mortar (2019), Winx (2018), Ben's Cat (2017), California Chrome (2016 and 2014), American Pharoah (2015), Mucho Macho Man (2013), Paynter (2012), Rapid Redux (2011), and Zenyatta (inaugural 2010).

The trophy presentation for Hot Rod Charlie's connections is scheduled for Jan. 8, 2022, at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., where race fans can also enjoy the official Vox Populi winner's print giveaway and special autograph appearances.

For the second straight year, someone with the last name McGaughey captured the $200,0000 Grade 3 Comely at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y. This year, it was not Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, but rather his son and former assistant J. Reeve McGaughey capturing his first graded stakes victory with Bees and Honey.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Owned by Gainesway Stable and Andrew Rosen, Bees and Honey, a chestnut Union Rags sophomore filly, registered a 96 Beyer Speed Figure for her effort in the Comely, which last year was won by the Joseph Allen homebred Mrs. Danvers for the elder McGaughey.

“It's pretty exciting,” said Reeve McGaughey. “I certainly appreciate the owners giving me the opportunity. This is my first horse for Gainesway, but I've had one or two for Mr. Rosen. He's always been very fair and a good owner for me.”

McGaughey, who went out on his own in 2020, expressed pride in capturing his first graded stakes race on the NYRA circuit.

“It's exciting to win a graded race in New York like the Comely which has a long history behind it,” McGaughey said. “The filly seems like she came out of the race in good shape. She'll come back down to Lexington on Sunday and from there we'll see where she goes next.”

McGaughey said he learned a number of valuable lessons during his time spent working with his Hall of Fame father.

“Just that you can't control everything – they're horses,” McGaughey said. “As long as you believe in what you're doing, you'll be alright.”

McGaughey said his belief in what he thought was a strong work last Saturday over the main track at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., prompted him to ship Bees and Honey to Aqueduct for the Comely.

“It was in the back of our minds, but we didn't decide to go until her last work,” McGaughey said. “She's not an overly exciting work horse and she put in what I consider a really good work, so it was a race worth trying and it paid off.”

McGaughey, who will have 15 stalls at Tampa Bay Downs in Tampa, Fla., said his newly crowned graded stakes-winner will receive a freshening with a spring and summer campaign in mind.

“She's probably getting a bit of a break now,” McGaughey said. “She wants to run a mile and an eighth or further and there aren't many options over the winter. She's had a pretty busy half of the year from July on and handled it all well. We'll freshen her up a bit. She may go to Ocala or straight to Tampa with me.”

Trainer J. Reeve McGaughey took one step closer to following in his Hall of Fame father's footsteps when sending out his first graded stakes winner with Gainesway Stable and Andrew Rosen's Bees and Honey, who captured Friday's 76th running of the Grade 3, $200,000 Comely for sophomore fillies going nine furlongs at Aqueduct Racetrack in South Ozone Park, NY.

McGaughey is the son of Shug McGaughey, a three-time winner of the Comely. En route to providing the younger McGaughey with his first graded stakes score, Bees and Honey ran in a first-level allowance event on November 7 at Churchill Downs, closing late to finish second at 16-1 odds behind graded stakes-placed Amendment Nineteen.

“I spent a few years up in New York and always enjoyed going to Aqueduct,” McGaughey said. “It just worked out that this race fell on the calendar as the last chance against 3-year-old fillies, so we took a chance.”

Breaking a touch slowly from post 5, Bees and Honey was four wide into the first turn as second-choice Played Hard commanded the pace through an easy opening quarter-mile in 25.49 seconds over the fast main track. Vegas Weekend, who entered off a four-race win streak, kept close company to her outside in second while under a hold from jockey Manny Franco.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=290 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid= data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Played Hard maintained her command through a half-mile in 50.18 seconds while Bees and Honey inched her way closer to the front under coaxing from Jose Lezcano. Bees and Honey battled to the outside of Played Hard in the first half of the stretch drive and drew off to win by 2 ¾ lengths in a time of 1:54.41. Played Hard held second by a half-length over the late-closing favorite Crazy Beautiful, who was in pursuit of her fourth graded stakes triumph.

Shalimar Gardens, Vegas Weekend and Hybrid Eclipse completed the order of finish. Army Wife and Ninetypercentbrynn were scratched.

“She broke really good today and I sat there. I lost a little ground in the first turn but she was pretty comfortable,” said Lezcano, who earlier on the program captured the Forever Together aboard Flower Point for the elder McGaughey. “On the backside, I dropped a little in and stayed comfortable the whole way around. She's a big filly and I started a little early at the five-sixteenths pole. She started gaining ground and when I really asked her, she looked good.”

The Comely was a first start beyond one mile for Bees and Honey. McGaughey said the distance played a big factor in shipping to Aqueduct.

“We really didn't have a chance to run her long like that and in all of her races she's shown she'll run as far as they'll let her run,” McGaughey said. “Every race she's run, she's gotten stronger in the last eighth of a mile. Coming up there to run a mile and an eighth on that track was a big part of it.”

McGaughey said the addition of blinkers for her maiden score in October at Keeneland has played a major role in Bees and Honey's improved form.

“They've focused her a little bit,” McGaughey said. “She wasn't quite running a full race for us the first couple times. She was really spotty, and it's got her to be more consistent throughout the race.”

McGaughey, who will send horses to Tampa Bay Downs for the winter, said Bees and Honey would likely stop in Ocala, Florida for a brief freshening before joining his winter contingent at the Oldsmar oval.

“We'll figure that out in the next couple days, but she'll start heading south,” McGaughey said.

Martin Garcia, aboard Played Hard, said his filly didn't quite get acclimated to the Aqueduct surface.

“I was really comfortable after going that easy, but when it was time to ask, she didn't love the track,” Garcia said. “The track is great but some horses like a firm track and others like a loose track, and in this case the track is a little loose. She was peddling and peddling and took a while to get going and when it was time to go, it was too late. She's a good filly and we got beat by a good horse.”

Carmouche, aboard Crazy Beautiful, said his filly was hampered after being bumped at the start.

“She stumbled leaving there and I wanted to be more forward than out the back door. It didn't set up the way I wanted,” Carmouche said. “They were going easy up front and I tried to get her up there so when the running started, she wouldn't have so much to overcome.”

Bees and Honey, a chestnut daughter of Union Rags, rewarded her backers in payouts of $28.20 for a $2 win wager as the second longest shot in the six-horse field. She banked $110,000 in victory, enhancing her lifetime bankroll to $180,700.

Bred in Kentucky by Gainesway Thoroughbreds and AR Enterprises Inc., Bees and Honey is out of the Smart Strike mare Wickedly Smart – a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Wickedly Perfect.

Live racing resumes Saturday at the Big A with a 10-race card featuring the $100,000 Central Park in Race 7, the $150,000 Discovery in Race 8, the Grade 3, $400,000 Long Island in Race 9 and the $150,000 Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship in Race 10. First post is 11:50 a.m. Eastern.

St. George Stable's Letruska, the probable favorite for the $2 million Grade 1 Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff next Saturday, Nov. 6, and Roadrunner Racing, William Strauss, Boat Racing LLC, and Gainesway Stable's Hot Rod Charlie, a leading contender for the $6 million Grade 1 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic, turned in works over a fast main track at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., Saturday morning.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=197 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=198 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Letruska, trained by Fausto Gutierrez, worked five furlongs in 1:01.20, and shortly afterward, Hot Rod Charlie worked seven furlongs in company in 1:26.80 for trainer Doug O'Neill.

Letruska was scheduled to work on her own, but she picked up some company on the backstretch.

“I was not planning on company; it was not ideal,” said exercise rider Roger Horgan, who was aboard Letruska who stayed to the inside of her unexpected companion. “She did relax. I was a bit concerned, but she switched off and let her do it on her own. I was very proud of her the way she relaxed.”

Gutierrez said Letruska handled the track well, noting that she has handled every track well in a 2021 campaign that has taken her to six tracks previously.

Shortly after Letruska finished, Hot Rod Charlie appeared on the scene working in company with Khantaro d'Oro, a 2-year-old maiden. Del Mar clockers caught Hot Rod Charlie in :47.80 for the half-mile, 1:00.20 for five furlongs, 1:13 for six furlongs, and 1:26.80 for the seven-eighths.

“I thought the work was visually impressive,” O'Neill said. “Charlie sat off his workmate and when Flavien (Prat) called on him, he responded well. He galloped out good and his energy was very high.”

O'Neill also sent out $1 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf pre-entrant Mackinnon to work six furlongs on the main track in 1:14.80.

Nine other Breeders' Cup pre-entrants worked: Ain't Easy (NetJets Juvenile Fillies) 5f in 1:01; Desert Dawn (NetJets Juvenile Fillies) 5f in 1:00.60; Helens Well (IRE) (Juvenile Fillies Turf) 5f in 1:00.60; Oviatt Class (TVG Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance) 5f in :59.60 in company; Proud Emma (Filly & Mare Sprint) 5f in :59.80 with Prat aboard; Aloha West (Qatar Racing Sprint) 4f in :47.20; Channel Maker (Longines Turf) 4f in :48.40; Chaos Theory (Turf Sprint) 4f in :48.20; and Horologist (Longines Distaff) 4f in :49.60.
