Hot on the hooves of 'TDN Rising Star' City Of Troy notching an impressive tally in Newmarket's G2 Superlative S., Christopher Head trainee and 'TDN Rising Star' Ramatuelle embellished her sire Justify's banner weekend with a spectacular performance in Sunday's G2 Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly.

The February-foaled €100,000 Arqana August graduate went postward as a heavily favoured 2-5 chance, returning off a wide-margin triumph over the six-furlong course and distance in last month's G3 Prix du Bois, and was swiftly into stride to occupy a prominent role here. Last to come off the bridle after halfway, she cruised into an outright lead approaching the final furlong and eased clear of toiling rivals with the minimum of fuss in the closing stages to hit the line with an impressive four-length advantage from G2 Railway S. third His Majesty (Ire) (No Nay Never). The hitherto undefeated Classic Flower (GB) (Calyx {GB}) was 3/4-of-a-length further adrift in third.

Ramatuelle became US Triple Crown hero Justify's fifth 'TDN Rising Star' when powering to an Apr. 11 debut success over five furlongs at this track, but was denied by 'TDN Rising Star' and subsequent Listed Prix Roland de Chambure victor Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) in a May 28 conditions test upped to six furlongs at Saint-Cloud in her penultimate outing.

“She is so good, she behaves like an older filly and is a true professional already,” Head explained in the aftermath of collecting a first win in the contest, which stemmed the flow of nine consecutive overseas winners. “She is not the most physically impressive filly, but it is the engine that matters most. I am very lucky to train her and very grateful to the partners. I don't really know if she will stay further, but that's not the point at the moment. We shall now concentrate on the [Aug. 20 G1] Prix Morny and will do our best to get her there in great shape. It is another very exciting challenge.”

NBA All-Star Tony Parker and part-owner added, “It was a great win and I'm very happy for the whole team. Her number one quality is her calmness. She's been super calm every time I have come to see her and she looks like she knows exactly what she's going to do. The coach has done a great job, we have a plan and we're sticking to it. It was her third race here and she's very comfortable on this track. Now it's on to the Prix Morny next month.”

Reflecting on the performance of third-place finisher Classic Flower, Pauline Chehboub said, “We are delighted with that run. She is a massive filly and we had to slow her down in her training due to sore shins. She needed the race and now needs further. We will see her back in action at Deauville, she is in the [G3] Prix Six Perfections and [G3 Prix du] Calvados later this month, but options might come too soon.”

Pedigree Notes
Ramatuelle, one of her sire's 10 pattern-race winners, is the first of three foals produced by G2 Goldene Peitsche and G3 Summer S. victrix Raven's Lady (GB) (Raven's Pass). She is a full-sister to a weanling colt and half to a yearling filly by Uncle Mo. Raven's Lady is out of an unraced half-sister to G1 Prix d'Ispahan-winning sire Best Of The Bests (Ire) (Machiavellian), G2 Dante S. third Dunhill Star (Ire) (Danehill) and the dam of MGSW G1 Melbourne Cup runner-up Prince Of Arran (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}). The February-foaled chestnut's third dam, G3 Fred Darling S. winner Sueboog (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), is a half-sister to the dam of GSW G1 Grand Prix de Paris and G1 Prix Jean Prat runner-up Shaanmer (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}) and stakes-winning GI Garden City Breeders' Cup H. second Nordican Inch (GB) (Inchinor {GB}).

So far, the dazzling TDN Rising Star Ramatuelle (Justify) has ruled the roost among the fillies of her native France and it is time to go up the ladder again in Sunday's six-furlong G2 Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly. Successful in her opening salvo and the G3 Prix du Bois by a cumulative margin of 9 1/2 lengths at this venue, Infinity Nine Horses' Christopher Head trainee was denied in between by fellow TDN Rising Star and Listed Prix Roland de Chambure winner Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) in Saint-Cloud's Prix Pirette conditions event.

She meets another colt of high standing here in Ballydoyle's His Majesty (Ire) (No Nay Never), who after winning the Curragh's Listed First Flier S. on debut has danced some of the big dances in Britain and Ireland. Whether his third in the G3 Marble Hill S. is good enough to trouble the filly remains to be seen, but he does seems the chief threat to her aside from the unexposed and unbeaten Classic Flower (GB) (Calyx {GB}) from the Patrice Cottier stable. She was impressive over five furlongs at Bordeaux-le-Bouscat in May and would provide her first-crop sire with a huge week if making the jump up.

In the G3 Prix Messidor, The Aga Khan's G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein winner and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois third Erevann (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) looks for a confidence boost, while the G3 Prix Chloe features last year's G3 Preis der Winterkonigin winner Quantanamera (Ger) (Lope De Vega {Ire}).

It's getting hotter by the hour in Europe and Sunday's pattern-race tests at Chantilly and The Curragh will call for that extra element from the protagonists who brave the heat. One who has shown abundant courage despite being just a greenhorn is Ballydoyle's Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never), who tackles the six-furlong G2 Darley Prix Robert Papin which will be his sixth juvenile start and third since his impressive success in The Curragh's G3 Marble Hill S. over this trip May 21. Aidan O'Brien is not known for taking in this prize, which was formerly a 5 1/2-furlong contest staged at the now defunct Maisons-Laffitte, but he changes tack this year and also saddles The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who looked in need of this trip when a narrow third in the five-furlong June 29 Listed Tipperary S. Nurlan Bizakov's Belbek (Fr) (Showcasing {GB}) heads the home defence for the Andre Fabre stable, returning to the course and distance of his defeat of the re-opposing Lova (Fr) (Goken {Fr}) in the June 19 G3 Prix du Bois.

Kildare Pearls

At The Curragh, the seven-furlong G2 Romanised Minstrel S. sees Haras De Saint Pair's Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) bid for a fourth group success having extended that tally in this venue's G2 Lanwades Stud S. over a mile May 22. Ballydoyle's stalwart Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) is back to defend his title in this race, having shown up well for a long way when third in Royal Ascot's G1 Queen Anne S. June 14, while Peter Brant's 'TDN Rising Star' Dr Zempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) puts his reputation on the line in deeper waters than when successful in Leopardstown's G3 Ballycorus S. over this trip June 9. The card's nine-furlong G2 Kilboy Estate S. is a wide-open affair, with Lael Stables' June 5 G2 Prix de Sandringham winner Purplepay (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) back from a mile-and-a-quarter trip that might have stretched her when fifth in the track's June 26 G1 Pretty Polly S.

Sixth when making his debut as The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) took the honours in the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot June 19, Ventura Tormenta (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) had made enough strides in the interim to reverse that form and cause an upset in Sunday’s G2 Darley Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly. Coming back to six furlongs having finished fifth in Newmarket’s G2 Superlative S. over seven July 11, Middleham Park Racing’s bay broke sharply to lead against the rail under Christophe Soumillon. Tackled by The Lir Jet and briefly headed inside the final furlong, the 7-1 shot managed to get his head down first and prevail in the bobber by a short head from the 2-5 favourite, with Tiger Tanaka (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) just a neck back in third in a three-way go.

Ventura Tormenta had won a novice contest over six furlongs at Yarmouth July 4 and the fact that he was pitched into the Superlative a week later speaks volumes for his constitution. Far from disgraced in what is probably the best 2-year-old race run so far this season, he was having his fourth start in a month here and his rider said, “He jumped fast and Mr Hannon told me to let him go. I thought Oisin [Murphy] had come to take me, but we were on the right stride at the post. He has quality, was well-behaved and professional today. This is an uphill track which is more like 1300 metres and it suited him.”

The Lir Jet’s trainer Michael Bell said of the runner-up, who was stepping up from five furlongs for the first time, “It’s a little bit annoying to be beaten like that–he was in front a shade before and after the post and it was just a bob of the head. I don’t think he ran to the same rating as at Ascot, so you couldn’t blame the trip. It was disappointing.” Trainer Charley Rossi said of the previously-unbeaten Tiger Tanaka, who was right in the mix at the finish having raced in claimers on her first three starts, “We’re very proud of her. She has a big heart. She has won over a mile already and I’m certain this isn’t her best trip. We’ll give her a rest and maybe bring her back for something like the [G3] Prix d’Aumale.”

Ventura Tormenta is out of Midnight Oasis (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), a half-sister to the G3 Ballyogan S. scorer Miss Anabaa (GB) (Anabaa) who is in turn the second dam of the Listed Ripon Champion Two Year Old Trophy winner and G3 Pavilion S. third Enjazaat (GB) also by Acclamation. She is also related to the recent Listed Maggie Dickson S. winner Mubtasimah (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), the G3 Prix du Bois winner Fly on the Night (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) and the G1 July Cup-winning sire Owington (GB) (Green Desert). Her yearling colt by Starspangledbanner (Aus) was a €40,000 purchase by Redwall Bloodstock at the Goffs November Foal Sale.

‘TDN Rising Star’ Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) heads to Chantilly on Sunday for another of the European Pattern’s main staging posts tackling more than a mile once more in the G1 Prix d’Ispahan. Tried over the 10 1/2-furlong trip of the G1 Prix du Jockey Club here last June, Godolphin and Ballymore Thoroughbred Ltd’s imposing bay came up two lengths short when runner-up to Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) but it will be a surprise if he is not suited by this unique nine-furlong contest. Proving he retained all his ability when taking the G2 Prix du Muguet at Saint-Cloud June 28, last year’s G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains hero will start a warm order for this prize and trainer Andre Fabre said, “Persian King is in really good form and has come on again from his latest start. We are hopeful of a good performance.”

Two lengths behind Persian King when third in the Jockey Club and suffering his sole career reversal, Sheikh Hamdan’s Motamarris (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}) was like that rival subsequently sidelined for the remainder of 2019. Back with a confidence-boosting four-length win in the June 20 Listed Grand Prix de Compiegne over 10 furlongs, the homebred has significant potential if Freddy Head can get a clear run with him this term. There is a 3-year-old in the line-up and Alan Spence’s Positive (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) warrants respect on his juvenile form. He beat Kameko (Kitten’s Joy) and Al Suhail (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the seven-furlong G3 Solario S. at Sandown in August and it is significant that Clive Cox steps him up in trip after his comeback fourth in the G1 St James’s Palace S. at Royal Ascot June 20. “He’s in very good form and we’re looking forward to running him,” his trainer said. “I thought he ran a very good race at Royal Ascot. He’s a horse we’ve always held in high regard and hopefully he can continue to progress. I think he’s a worthy contender in a Group 1 and we’re looking forward to trying him over an extra furlong.”

In the G2 Darley Prix Robert Papin, Qatar Racing’s June 19 G2 Norfolk S. scorer The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) has scared off all bar three rivals in a poor turnout. Heading the opposition is Alain Jathiere’s July 2 G3 Prix du Bois runner-up Axdavali (Fr) (Goken {Fr}), but trainer Michael Bell is confident his colt has a distinct edge. “We’ve been happy with our horse since Ascot. It’s a small field and it will be interesting to see how the English 2-year-old form equates to the French 2-year-old form–on paper it looks like we’ve got the best form by some way,” he said. “Stepping up to six furlongs shouldn’t be an issue–he hit the line strongly over five at Ascot and it took Oisin [Murphy] a while to pull him up, which is always a good sign.”

More high-profile juvenile action is on tap at The Curragh, where the six-furlong G2 Airlie Stud S. where SBA Racing Limited’s June 27 Listed First Flier S. winner Frenetic (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) is the headline act. She encounters a pair of Ballydoyle representatives in the impressive July 4 G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies’ Sprint S. winner Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and ‘TDN Rising Star’ More Beautiful (War Front), with the latter having been withdrawn from Newmarket’s G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. when the ground turned soft.

Also at The Curragh is the G2 Holden Plant Rentals Sapphire S. over five furlongs, where Shaikh Duaij Al Khalifa’s 3-year-old A’Ali (Ire) (Society Rock {Ire}) seeks a fifth group win and fourth at this level having taken a competitive edition of the July 5 G3 Sandown Sprint S. He will have to contend with the triple listed scorer and track specialist Make a Challenge (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who again proved his liking for this circuit when capturing the July 10 Listed Midsummer Sprint S. over 5 1/2 furlongs.

The Curragh also plays host to the nine-furlong G2 Kilboy Estate S., where Peter Brant’s acquisition Lemista (Ire) (Raven’s Pass) bids for a three-timer having annexed the G3 Park Express S. over a mile at Naas Mar. 23 and Gowran Park’s Listed Victor McCalmont Memorial S. over an extended nine furlongs June 19. Craig Bernick’s June 21 G3 Blue Wind S. winner One Voice (Ire) (Poet’s Voice {GB}), Ballydoyle’s July 13 Listed Cairn Rouge S. scorer Lovelier (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and The Aga Khan’s ‘TDN Rising Star’ Ridenza (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) add ballast to an intriguing affair.
