Classy stayer Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}–Shao Line {Fr}, by General Holme) seized the initiative under Hollie Doyle from the bell and carried the G1 Qatar Prix du Cadran field pillar-to-post on a sunny Saturday at ParisLongchamp.

Pressed for most of the 4000-metre race by Emily Dickinson (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Frankie Dettori, the 7-year-old gelding dropped the hammer when cued by Doyle 500 metres from home, which burned off his main rival inside the final quarter mile. Moon Wolf (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) launched a mild bid later in the straight, but the 9-10 favourite skipped away to win by four lengths over that foe. Run For Oscar (Ire) (Oscar {Ire}) was another 3 1/2 lengths back in third.

It was a dramatically different tale than occurred during the G2 Doncaster Cup S. earlier this month for the Alan King trainee, as he had fought Doyle for much of that contest, but gutted out the victory in soft going that day once given his head. The Cadran was the third top-level score for the Singula Partnership-owned bay, who took the 2021 edition of this race and the Goodwood Cup that same year.

King, who did not make the journey to Paris, said, “I had a busy morning at home and I've just walked into Newmarket, but obviously I'm thrilled.

“I spoke to Hollie this morning and we thought there wasn't going to be much pace in the race. We said if that was the case we'd let him bowl along in front and he obviously loved it.

“He was more settled than he was at Doncaster and I think that was firstly because that run just knocked the freshness off him and second he just settled well in front today.

“We were struggling with him in the early part of the year, but the little wind operation we gave him as clearly helped and it looks like he's right back to his best.”

What a performance, what a duo

Trueshan and @HollieDoyle1 win the Group 1 Qatar Prix du Cadran at @paris_longchamp! pic.twitter.com/TxtDsiCGPI

— At The Races (@AtTheRaces) September 30, 2023

“He's a special horse and all credit to everyone at Barbury Castle,” said Doyle, who was winning for the 10th time on the dour stayer. “He's trained by a super trainer and it's great for Alan to get him back to where he is, winning the Cadran for a second time. My mum and dad are here and I don't think my dad has seen me ride a Group 1 winner, so it's extra special.”

A winner of his third G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup once again at Ascot to end his season, Trueshan was second in the Listed Further Flight S., and reported home fourth in the G3 Sagaro S. in May. After wind surgery, the Doncaster Cup was his first start since. He will target a fourth consecutive victory in the Long Distance Cup next month.

“The good thing is we have a fresh horse for the backend of the season and obviously we hope to go back to Ascot in three weeks' time to win that race for a fourth time,” King added of the Didier Blot-bred Trueshan. “I'll give him an entry in the [G1] Prix Royal-Oak the following week just in case he needs that extra time, but Ascot would be the plan.”

Pedigree Notes

The leading runner by Chapel Stud resident Planteur, Trueshan is one of six stakes winners for the stallion, who also has G2 Gran Premio del Jockey Club hero Road To Arc (Fr). Out of the winning mare Shao Line, the €8,000 Osarus La Teste Sale yearling turned 31,000gns Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up and HIT alum is a half-brother to four winners including Anecdotique (Fr) (Enrique {GB}), whose son True Marvel (Fr) (Masked Marvel {GB}) was second in the G1 Sydney Cup. Shao Line's latest foals are a pair of fillies by Planteur and Golden Horde (Ire) born in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Trainer Aidan O'Brien indicated MG1SWs Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) would return in Leopardstown's G1 Royal Bahrain Irish Champion S. on Sept. 9. The stablemates were last seen in the G1 King George and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot on July 29, where Luxembourg was a hard-fought fourth while the dual Derby winner came home a distant 10th.

Their conditioner could find no obvious reason for the poor showing but remained hopeful the son of the late Deep Impact could bounce back at Leopardstown.

“We're very happy with Luxembourg, everything has gone very well,” said the Ballydoyle handler of the 4-year-old, who took the 2022 renewal of Leopardstown's 10-furlong test. “The King George is a tough race and he was on the pace. The plan is at the moment both he and Auguste Rodin are going to Leopardstown.”

He continued, “Really, we don't know what happened to Auguste in the King George. He was drawn very wide and trapped very wide and he came off the bridle a lot earlier than Ryan [Moore] would have thought. It's probably a blessing in disguise, as if he came off the bridle at the stage, he was probably going to get a very tough race. For a baby 3-year-old, he was probably lucky he didn't get into a brawl and he came home very well.”

Regardless of what happens the rest of the season, O'Brien hinted that the Classic-winning sophomore was unlikely to return for a 4-year-old season.

“He's such a unique horse pedigree-wise he's kind of irreplaceable really,” he said.

Also on tap to resurface on Irish Champions Festival weekend is Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), 20-length winner of the G1 Qatar Prix du Cadran in his final appearance in 2022 which saw him go unbeaten for that season. Injury ruling out a return in the first half of 2023, the colt is looking to defend his G1 Comer Group International Irish St. Leger crown at the Curragh Sept. 10.

“Four months ago, you'd have said he'll never race again. He got an infection in his joint and then the ligament down the outside of his pastern shifted, so it became unstable,” said O'Brien. “Everyone has done a wonderful job with him. If we got a run into him, we'll look towards [ParisLongchamp, Oct. 1] Arc weekend again, either the Arc or the Cadran, but I would imagine the Arc would be too much too quick for him.”

Dominant in the stayers' sphere following an unbeaten five-race streak this term, Aidan O'Brien trainee Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}–Polished Gem {Ire}, by Danehill) sealed the divisional crown with an extravagant victory in Saturday's G1 Qatar Prix du Cadran at ParisLongchamp. The May-foaled chestnut, sent off as the 7-10 favourite for the 2 1/2-mile contest, had already devoured Royal Ascot's G1 Gold Cup, the G1 Goodwood Cup and the G1 Irish St Leger, but was bustled along to occupy a forward pitch in third entering the straight first time. Easing to the fore on the run to the home turn proper, he was in isolation approaching the quarter-mile marker and, despite veering across the track to the stands' side rail inside the final furlong, stayed on strongly to easily outclass 71-1 outsider Almacado Gree (Fr) (Domedriver {Ire}) by a facile 20 lengths.

“He's an incredible stayer, he has a massive engine, a huge heart and an incredible mind,” trumpeted Aidan O'Brien. “Ryan [Moore] rode him handy, they went a good gallop and they just fell away before they turned in. He got left in front, but got lazy and lonely in the straight. The horse thought it was time to pull up and he thought the race was over. He also lost a shoe in the straight, so that might be a little bit of a reason behind what happened as well. He's an amazing horse, but never moves from second gear in his work. We can't get him up into third, fourth or fifth gear, so he must have an unbelievable capacity for covering distance at pace. I think that's probably him done for the year and I'd imagine we'll go down the same route next season.”

Kyprios is the latest of 10 foals, all winners, produced by 2015 Broodmare of the Year Polished Gem (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a winning daughter of G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Trusted Partner (Affirmed). He is kin to seven black-type winners headed by dual G1 Irish St Leger heroine Search For a Song (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), G1 Prince of Wales's S.-winning sire Free Eagle (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) and MGSW G2 British Champions Fillies & Mares S. victress Sapphire (Ire) (Medicean {GB}). Descendants of Polished Gem, who is also a full-sister to GI Matriarch S. victrix Dress To Thrill (Ire), also include G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. hero Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). Kyprios's third dam Talking Picture (Speak John), the GI Matron S. and GI Spinaway S.-winning US champion, is the ancestress of G1 Grand Prix de Paris and G1 Sydney Cup hero Gallante (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).
