Deauville's month-long racing fest is back upon us on Sunday, with the G1 Prix Rothschild the key event on a talent-packed card. British and Irish interests always excel at this meeting, so the first port of call must be the reinvented miler Rogue Millennium (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) who was able to transfer the scintillating speed she had shown over middle distances of late to this trip in Royal Ascot's G2 Duke of Cambridge S. The pride and joy of Tom Clover's stable may have found an ideal opportunity to garner one of these precious contests with the big cats playing elsewhere.

“She travels so well and it is hard to have a horse to take her far enough through her races,” Clover said. “We won over a mile, so it makes sense to stay at a mile. Obviously it was a fantastic day at Ascot and one we will always remember, but let's hope we can continue on the path we've been going on. She seems well and has been since Ascot and hopefully we have some luck.”

Also from England is Wathnan Racing's G1 Coronation S. and G1 Falmouth S. runner-up Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who has the edge over the Jessie Harrington challenger Sounds Of Heaven (GB) (Kingman {GB}) on the Coronation form, while France's best chance of keeping this at home could rest with the Wertheimers' TDN Rising Star Kelina (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). She beat the subsequent shock G1 Prix Jean Prat heroine Sauterne (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) in Chantilly's G2 Prix de Sandringham last time and is only going one way at present.

Richard Brown, racing adviser to Wathnan, said of Remarquee, “We are conscious it is her third run in a fairly short space of time, but we are going to give her a break next, win, lose or draw. She has come out of Newmarket in great form. She's still quite green and still learning her job. She came up against Nashwa at her best last time and that is a hard task for any filly.”

An Elite Cabourg…
In the fixture's G3 Prix de Cabourg, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's Listed National S.-winning sensation Elite Status (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) goes up to six furlongs for the first time having been found out for sharpness in Royal Ascot's G2 Norfolk S. Bad news for him is he has White Birch Farm's TDN Rising Star Havana Cigar (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) lying in wait having entered the leading juvenile conversation when dynamic at Chantilly at the start of the month. Then there is the Fabre unknown in Prince Faisal's Saint-Cloud scorer Sajir (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), who follows in the steps of the likes of Zamindar, Xaar (GB) and Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal). François Boutin still holds the record of nine wins in this important staging post, but one more for Fabre and it will be shared.

Sunday's Support…
Also at Deauville, the seven-furlong G3 Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing for 2-year-old fillies features Gousserie Racing and Jean-Etienne Dubois's Classic Flower (GB) (Calyx {GB}), who will give further evidence in the ongoing investigation into the true merit of TDN Rising Star Ramatuelle (Justify) who thrashed her in the G2 Prix Robert Papin. Fabre saddles a granddaughter of Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) for Juddmonte here in the Chantilly winner Cavalletti (GB) (Kingman {GB}), while Ecurie des Charmes' impressive Compiegne debut winner Minoushka (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) could be another big name for the Lerners. Munich's G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis sees Liberty Racing's G1 Deutsches Derby hero Fantastic Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) take on Godolphin's GI Saratoga Derby winner Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) who is back in Europe after his third from a horror draw in the Mar. 25 G1 Dubai Turf.

Group 2 winner Just Beautiful (GB) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}) will not participate at Royal Ascot, and will instead point toward targets later in the summer with a trip to the Breeders' Cup also a possibility, trainer Paddy Twomey revealed on Friday.

The 5-year-old Moyglare Stud colourbearer ran fifth in the G3 Athasi S. at the Curragh in early May, before taking the G2 Lanwades Stud S. later in the month. The G1 Falmouth S., as well as the G1 Prix Rothschild–both in July–and the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest in August are potential targets for the progressive bay.

Twomey said, “She's not going [to Ascot]. I would say she will go to Deauville maybe. We may look at the Falmouth, but she might go to France for the Prix Maurice De Gheest or Prix Rothschild.”

The trainer added, “The long-term aim would be the [GI] Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita [in November].”

Last term's G1 Sun Chariot S. victrix Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}–Falling Petals {Ire}, by Raven's Pass) posted a fourth in Meydan's Mar. 26 G1 Dubai Turf before regaining the winning thread in Royal Ascot's June 15 G2 Duke of Cambridge S. and continued on a roll with a decisive victory in Tuesday's G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville. The 3-5 favourite was swiftly into stride and held sway in the centre of the track from the outset of this straight one-mile test. Drawing the sting out of her six rivals by setting a searching tempo throughout, she was stoked up when strongly pressed with 300 metres remaining and withstood every challenge under a late drive to win going away for second elite-level triumph. At the line, she was 2 1/2 lengths too good for the year-younger Tenebrism (Caravaggio), who just held on for second by a head from the fast-finishing Goldistyle (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). The latter is a daughter of the storied Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa), who won four straight editions of this contest from 2008 through 2011.

“She's very strong with a lovely temperament and she is such a nice filly,” said trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam. “It is great to come here to Deauville and win this race. She has a lot of options to come and, I suppose, her main objectives are the [G1] Matron S. [at Leopardstown] and the [G1] Sun Chariot [S. at Newmarket].”

Winning rider William Buick continued, “She is just the sort of horse that makes life of a jockey so much easier. She has a great temperament, she is strong and so well balanced. She has speed, but also stays well and 10 furlongs would not be a problem for her. I kicked early because my main concern was Ryan [Moore]'s filly [Tenebrism], who won here over seven furlongs and has the speed and a turn of foot. Saffron Beach stays well so, up against such a profile, the earlier the race starts the better for a filly like mine.”

Saffron Beach, full-sister to a yearling colt and a weanling filly, is the third of six foals and the lone scorer produced by a winning daughter of the dual stakes-placed Infinite Spirit (Maria's Mon). Her dam Falling Petals (Ire) (Raven's Pass) is thus kin to G3 Criterion S. third Huntdown (Elusive Quality) and to the dam of three black-type performers headed by G3 World Trophy S. and G3 Molecomb S.-winning sire Cotai Glory (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). Saffron Beach's third dam, G3 Matron S. victrix and G1 Coronation S. runner-up Eternal Reve (Diesis {GB}), is kin to GI Hollywood Derby hero Eternity Star (Majestic Light) and the Group 1-placed sire Eternity Range (Majestic Light). They are out of a half-sister to G1 Prix de la Salamandre victor and leading sire Miswaki (Mr. Prospector).

Deauville's four-week bonanza begins on Tuesday with an array of class across four pattern races headed by the G1 Prix Rothschild, which brings together two of Europe's leading fillies in Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) and Tenebrism (Caravaggio). While the former's stamina for this mile is assured and proven, TDN Rising Star Tenebrism has yet to confirm that the trip is within reach. Saffron Beach, who had already displayed her quality at this level when overpowering her rivals in Newmarket's G1 Sun Chariot S. in October, arguably performed to an even higher standard when making light of a five-pound penalty in Royal Ascot's G2 Duke of Cambridge S. on her 2022 European bow June 15.

Jane Chapple-Hyam has no concerns heading into this contest, which sits perfectly in the 4-year-old's program heading to the Breeders' Cup. “It is a small, competitive field, but I feel she is good enough for the task ahead,” she said. “She has turned into a really good traveller now. She was always a little bit sticky as a younger horse, but even when we do go to the Breeders' Cup, I won't be nervous about her travelling. If we have got go on and lead, we will do. She made all in the Sun Chariot and at Ascot, just about.”

Painting The Picture

With Saffron Beach the lead performer on form with stamina to go further, it would be no surprise to see William Buick turn this into a test from some way out. Whatever the obvious talent of Ballydoyle's Tenebrism, the fact remains that she has excelled over six furlongs in the G1 Cheveley Park S. and at seven in this venue's G1 Prix Jean Prat July 10 and has been out of the frame when tried at a mile in the 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. Ryan Moore has to ensure he is not too far out of his ground as the British raider applies the pressure and this will provide the definitive test as to whether she stays or not. “She showed at Ascot that she gets a mile and I think we saw a much better filly last time, with the promise of more to come,” her rider said in his betfair blog.

Hidden Pearls?

Haras de Saint Pair's capable Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who has a trio of pattern-race wins in her native Ireland including the May 22 G2 Lanwades Stud S. at The Curragh, will be prominently placed to add pace pressure and this has been the target for some time according to Paddy Twomey. “It has been the plan all year,” he said. “Andreas Putsch's farm is in Deauville and she was born and reared in Deauville, so the plan is to take her back and go and win there.” Of the French, Yeguada Centurion's May 8 G2 Prix du Muguet winner Sibila Spain (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) could add another dimension if reverting to her old front-running tactics, while the Wertheimers' Goldistyle (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is a daughter of Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) who turned this into her own private procession between 2008 and 2011. She has to improve markedly on her latest fourth in the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil at Chantilly June 19, where she held every chance but weakened late.

A Fast Start

Deauville's opening card begins with the G3 Prix de Psyche Sky Sports Racing for 3-year-old fillies over 10 furlongs, where Andre Fabre holds a strong hand including Ecurie Ama Zingteam's Hidden Dimples (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Impressive when beating the subsequent G1 Prix de Diane runner-up La Parisienne (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) in ParisLongchamp's Listed Prix de la Seine over 11 furlongs May 15, she was a well-beaten fourth trying a mile and a half on soft ground in the G3 Prix de Royaumont at Chantilly June 5. Next up is the G3 Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing over seven furlongs for the juvenile fillies, where Flaxman Stables' July 10 Listed Prix Roland de Chambure runner-up Terrestrial (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) encounters Rashit Shaykhutdinov's TDN Rising Star Gain It (GB) (De Treville {GB}) who impressed with a seven-length success at Saint-Cloud July 16, and Avatara SA & Haras D'Etreham's similarly-unbeaten Sea The Lady (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}). In the six-furlong G3 Darley Prix de Cabourg also for the 2-year-olds, Ballydoyle look for further success with their strong crop with the July 17 G2 Prix Robert Papin runner-up The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Jean-Claude Seroul's June 5 Listed Prix la Fleche scorer and July 10 Listed Prix Yacowlef runner-up Wootton City (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) is among his rivals and she is three pounds better off with Guy Pariente's Sivana (Fr) (Goken {Fr}), who beat her by a head in that five-furlong contest.

Group 1 winner Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) is headed to the G1 Prix Rothschild in August, according to Jamie McCalmont, who is the racing manager to part-owner Marc Chan. Second to Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the G1 Fillies' Mile at two, the Ralph Beckett trainee filled that spot again in the G1 1000 Guineas in the wake of Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) on May 1. She weakened to 10th in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot once again behind Inspiral, but bounced back to defeat that foe in the G1 Falmouth S. for a new career high on July 8.

McCalmont said, “All is good with Prosperous Voyage and we're heading to Deauville on Aug. 2 for the Prix Rothschild.

“The Sun Chariot is not until the second half of October, so I don't think we're going to wait that long. I would hope she'll have at least one more run if not two.

“For sure she definitely handles the track at Newmarket very well, so you could see why that [Sun Chariot] would be the long-term aim.”

Deauville's month-long festival begins on Tuesday, with the G1 Prix Rothschild the central focus of the opening fixture switched from its customary slot on the last Sunday in July.

As usual, the foreign presence is strong and foreboding, with Aidan O'Brien looking to continue his golden year in France with Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). Successful in the G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket May 2, she has since run second to Coeursamba (Fr) (The Wow Signal {Ire}) in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches at ParisLongchamp May 16, third in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot June 18 and runner-up again in the G1 Falmouth S. on Newmarket's July course. The form of that July 9 contest could hardly have worked out better at Goodwood this week, with Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Snow Lantern (GB) (Frankel {GB}) making their presence felt in the G1 Sussex S. and the fourth-placed Lady Bowthorpe (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) scooping the G1 Nassau S.

Fifth in the Falmouth and finishing strongly to beaten just over a length in total, David Ward's Listed Michael Seely Memorial S. winner Primo Bacio (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) tries again with trainer Ed Walker expecting her to be in the mix.

“I'm very hopeful,” he said. “She's only had three runs this year and the only time she had an uninterrupted passage she absolutely trotted up. She is massively exciting and she's in great form. We haven't had to do a lot with her since the Falmouth to keep her happy and well. This year, we seem to have found the hottest renewal of the Falmouth in history. We've got to turn the form round with Mother Earth, which I wouldn't bet against her doing. We're just hoping we have a smooth trip and if she does I think she'll be bang there.”

Of the home team, the Katsumi Yoshida-owned Coeursamba, who after her Pouliches victory has subsequently finished 11th trying the 10 1/2-furlong trip of the G1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly June 20, and Teruya Yoshida's acquisition Tahlie (Fr) (Rio de la Plata) appear to hold the strongest claims. Tahlie beat the Pouliches third Kennella (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in the G2 Prix de Sandringham at Chantilly June 6, but needs to improve significantly to put it up to the raiding party.

Germany are well-represented, with Gestut Brummerhof's Novemba (Ger) (Gleneagles {Ire}) and Cayton Park Stud Ltd and Team Valor's Axana (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). Novemba was the impressive winner of the May 30 G2 German 1000 Guineas at Dusseldorf before finishing a respectable fourth in the Coronation and is set to give jockey Bauyrzhan Murzabayev the ultimate thrill, while Axana faces the sternest test of her career having annexed Lingfield's G3 Chartwell Fillies' S. over seven furlongs May 8.

Colts Eye Group 3 Laurel

The card kicks off with two races for juveniles headed by the six-furlong G3 Darley Prix de Cabourg, where John and Jess Dance's Sam Maximus (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) could set off another spree for overseas challengers who perennially farm the black-type races at this meeting.

Setting the clear form standard on his latest third in the G2 July S. at Newmarket July 8, where the subsequent G2 Richmond S. winner Asymmetric (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) was a head in front in second, the Tom Dascombe-trained bay has a trio of domestically-trained unexposed colts to contend with. They are Gerard Augustin-Normand's impressive July 13 Prix des Yearlings winner Toimy Son (Fr) (Twilight Son {GB}) from the Yann Barberot stable, Hollymount Stud France's Sunday Best (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}), who was a five-length winner also over this course and distance July 13, and the Andre Fabre-trained Trident (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier and Westerberg's bay beat a subsequent winner over 6 1/2 furlongs on a testing surface at ParisLongchamp June 24 and it is interesting that the master of Chantilly pitches him in here in the race he has won on seven occasions.

Hunt For Perfection

In the G3 Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing, Fabre also has the exciting unbeaten Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) who has been purchased by Ali Hamad Al Attiya after her dazzling success in the Listed Prix Roland de Chambure over this seven-furlong trip and track July 11. George Boughey sends across Nick Bradley Racing's Galileo Gold (GB) duo Oscula (Ire) and Hellomydarlin (Ire), with the pair third and 12th respectively in the six-furlong G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot June 18. The former was fourth next time in the G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. at Newmarket July 9, while Hellomydarlin managed third in the G2 Prix Robert Papin also over six at Chantilly July 18.

“The ground was too quick for Oscula at Newmarket last time,” Boughey said. “It looks like there's a bit of ease out there this time, which should suit her. She was third in the Albany on heavy and then it was very soft ground on Oaks day when she won the Woodcote. She's rated 100, goes there in good shape, so I think she has a good chance. Jockey reports and everything I've seen have always suggested Hellomydarlin would get seven. She's a big, strong filly and goes there with a decent chance as well. They worked together the other day and they worked as well as each other. Obviously one will beat the other, but where they finish, I'm not sure.”

Another British raider is Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's Daneh (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was impressive when beating a subsequent winner in a novice over this trip on her sole start on Kempton's Polytrack June 23. A daughter of the top-class Rizeena (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), she is an unknown quantity in this line-up.

“She won very well at Kempton and we thought she deserved a chance in a stakes race,” Ed Crisford commented. “We were going to run her in a listed race at Sandown the other day, but it was very firm ground and she wouldn't want that. It still looks a very punchy affair out there, but she's in good form and I think she's come on again from her first run so we're expecting a good run from her.”

Also in the mix is Alain Jathiere and Guy Pariente's Pascal Bary-trained Lovamour (Fr) (Goken {Fr}), who took a 5 1/2-furlong Chantilly maiden June 20 which has received several boosts and in which the aforementioned Cabourg contender Sunday Best was third, and The Aga Khan's impressive July 15 Chantilly conditions winner Soumera (Fr) (Charm Spirit {Ire}).

Angel Hoping to Earn Halo in Psyche

The 10-furlong G3 Prix de Psyche Sky Sports Racing features the June 4 G1 Epsom Oaks runner-up Mystery Angel (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) who is another Nick Bradley-Boughey project excelling above expectations.

“It seems everywhere she goes, the rain follows her. She's in very good form–she's been busy, but she takes her racing incredibly well,” her trainer said. “She's not bred to get a mile and a quarter or a mile and a half, but I think because she's so relaxed she's able to. We'll probably look to make plenty of use of her and get on the front. James Doyle will know that she stays a mile and a half well and be pretty positive on her.”
