Group 1 winner Lady Bowthorpe (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) will not start in the G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket on Oct. 2, and will instead be pointed at the Oct. 16 QIPCO British Champions Day. Trained by William Jarvis for Emma Banks, the 5-year-old mare won the G1 Nassau S. in late July, but was only seventh in the G1 Prix Jean Romanet on Aug. 22. Jarvis is pointing Lady Bowthorpe to either the one mile G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. or the 10-furlong G1 QIPCO Champion S.

“There's nothing drastically wrong with the mare at all–but we did miss a crucial bit of work with her, and I just felt that she wouldn't do herself justice if she went there a bit undercooked,” trainer William Jarvis told Nick Luck's Daily Podcast. “I don't see any point in lining up in a Group 1 race unless we're ticking every box. Emma Banks is very philosophical and patient and understands the situation.

“We're going to leave her in both the mile race (QEII) and the Champion S. at Ascot. With a bit of luck, that's what we're going to do.”

Lady Bowthorpe narrowly secured the G2 Dahlia S. at Newmarket on May 2 making her first start of the year, and was second to standout miler Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the May 15 G1 Lockinge S. on May 15. She was fourth in the July 9 G1 Falmouth S. to a trio of Group 1-winning 3-year-old fillies, prior to her Nassau score.

“We did give her five days off, and she did benefit from that,” added Jarvis of her French effort. “Obviously it was a below-par effort, and we were desperately disappointed, but nothing came to light. Her action was good, and she looks very healthy still–she looks marvellous, actually.”

Looking farther ahead he added, “No decision has absolutely been made [on her retirement]. We're going to see how she goes on Oct. 16 and probably make a decision then. It doesn't necessarily have to be made straight after that either.

“We'd love to have her in training as a 6-year-old. But having said that, she's got that crucial Group 1 under her belt and owes none of us anything. We've been privileged and very lucky to have a mare as special as her.”

Saturday's G3 Atalanta S. heroine Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), runner-up in the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas in Newmarket in May, will make her next start at that course in the Oct. 2 G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S., trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam announced on Thursday. Originally, the Oct. 17 GI E.P. Taylor S. at Woodbine in Canada had been under consideration, too, for the 2020 G3 Oh So Sharp S. victress.

“The plan going forward will be to head to the Sun Chariot. It is her backyard and she has done extremely well there before having won there twice and finishing second there twice in four starts so she knows the track really well,” said Chapple-Hyam of the G1 Cazoo Oaks eighth and G1 Falmouth S. 11th. “She had excuses in the Oaks as it came up really heavy and she had a dirty lung after finishing down the field in the Falmouth S.

“She finished second in the 1000 Guineas so we knew she had the ability to win more group races and it was important getting more black type on Saturday. She was dominant in that last furlong and when Hollie [Doyle] asked her to go two out she shot clear which was nice to see.

Chapple-Hyam added, “I think a race like the [GI] E.P. Taylor S. is really a race for 4-year-olds. We feel she can travel next year for a race like that when she is that bit older.”

Group 1 winner Lady Bowthorpe (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) will likely make her next start in the G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. on Oct. 2. Trainer William Jarvis prefers that Newmarket option, with the G1 Prix de l'Opera back in France on Oct. 3 no longer under consideration. Later targets on the calendar include the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. or G1 Champion S. on Oct. 16 for the 5-year-old mare. In her most recent start, the G1 Nassau S. heroine was seventh of eight in the G1 Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville.

“Obviously, it was very disappointing,” Jarvis said of his star's Romanet performance. “But that's horseracing, it happens. I can't really come up with an excuse for it. It went our way at Goodwood, [but] it didn't in Deauville. We've been in it for a long time, we can understand these things.”

Successful in the G2 Dahlia S. on May 2, Lady Bowthorpe ran a good second to Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the G1 Al Shaqab Locking S. at Newbury on May 15 and was second again in the G2 Duke Of Cambridge S. at Royal Ascot on June 16. Only fourth in the G1 Falmouth S. behind the Group 1-winning trio of sophomore fillies Snow Lantern (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never), she scored her first top-shelf victory in the July 29 Nassau S.

“We're going to sleep on it,” he added of the Emma Banks-owned mare. “Sometimes, you can't quite put a finger on it. But the filly has come back healthy and sound, so that's the main thing. She won't go back to France, I wouldn't have thought, for the Prix de l'Opera. So we've got the Sun Chariot as a possible target for her.

“We've got those [British Champions Day] races at Ascot. [So], if we're not pleased with her in time for the Sun Chariot we can wait and take up one of those entries.

“The Ascot races both look very competitive, strong fields. So if she was ready for the Sun Chariot I think we'd take up that option.”

G1 Matron S. heroine Champers Elysees (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) has been supplemented to the G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket on Oct. 3. Purchased by Teruya Yoshida of Shadai Farm after her win in the Sept. 12 Matron, the filly remains in the care of trainer Johnny Murtagh. The Matron was the fourth win in a row for the bay, who won a handicap at The Curragh in her seasonal bow June 12, added the July 28 Listed Corrib Fillies S. and captured the Sept. 2 G3 Fairy Bridge S. at Gowran.

“We’ve been happy with her since the Matron and this looks the next logical step,” said Murtagh. “We supplemented this morning. It’s going to be tough race–it’s a Group 1 they are always hard to win–but we’ve been happy with our filly since the Matron. Colin Keane is going to ride her again and we’re looking forward to it.

“For Mr. Yoshida to be involved in the yard is a big thing. He runs a huge operation and only buys the best. For her to be good enough for him is great, and it’s also great he’s going to leave her in training with us next year.

“The stable is going from strength to strength and we need those high-profile owners in our yard to elevate us to the next level.”

Out of consideration for the Sun Chariot is Dr. Ali Ridha’s Group 2 winner Powerful Breeze (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}), who was last seen in action when second in last October’s G1 Fillies’ Mile. The Hugo Palmer trainee has been out of action this year recovering from broken ribs.

“Unfortunately we’ve just run out of time with her,” said Palmer. “It was too big an ask to get her ready in that short space of time and we were just going to have to push too hard, which wouldn’t have been fair on her. Dr. Ali is very keen to keep her in training next year, so there was no point rushing when we’ve got time on our side.”

Juddmonte’s juvenile Group 1 winner Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) will appear next in the Oct. 3 G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket. A winner of the G1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile at Ascot last fall, Quadrilateral has not found the winner’s circle this season, but finished third in both the June 7 G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and fourth in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot later that month. She was last seen in action running fourth in the G3 Atalanta S. at Sandown on Aug. 23.

“The only race for her at this stage is the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket,” said Roger Charlton. “If she is well we will be heading there. I thought she needed the race at Sandown, because she had her setback and she just blew up.”

Group 2 winner Powerful Breeze (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}), second in the G1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile S. to sign off her juvenile year last October, is a potential starter in the G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket on Oct. 3. The Hugo Palmer trainee, who races in the colours of Dr. Ali Ridha, sustained several broken ribs earlier this year that has kept her out of action. A debut winner at Newmarket prior to her G2 May Hill S. victory, Powerful Breeze appears to have healed nicely and is in good order for her first start back.

“Powerful Breeze is doing great,” said Palmer. “She’s been back cantering for a while now. She hasn’t galloped yet, but she didn’t take a lot of galloping to get to her peak last year. We think she’s a bigger and stronger filly this year and the most important thing is there is no indication she is any discomfort whatsoever–long may that remain the case.

“I’m hopeful we’ll see her in the Sun Chariot. There is no obvious opportunity to run her before Newmarket, but she did win first and second time up last season and is not a big filly who takes a lot of getting fit. It’s obviously been a concertinaed campaign, so if there is ever a good year to miss most of the season, this was it.”
