The Richard Hannon charge beat a next-out scorer at Newbury on debut in June before stepping up to the listed level with a victory in the Flexjet Pat Eddery S. at Ascot last out on July 29. His conditioner has also been eyeing a run in the G1 Darley Dewhurst S. in October, but is not confident Rosallion will see his peek before his 3-year-old term next season.

“He's absolutely fine and he's going to go to the Champagne S. at Doncaster and then hopefully on to the Dewhurst, he's in great form,” said Hannon. “Funny enough, it is the same route as Chindit took, although the Dewhurst didn't work for him. He went to a Donny maiden race, to the Ascot race and then to win the Champagne S. It is very similar to his route. [Rosallion] looked a very good horse at Ascot and we always thought he was. He is a very exciting horse and one that is not a 2-year-old and one for next year.”

“It is the first season I've had runners for Juddmonte and he was the first one in,” the winning trainer explained. “It is a huge privilege to train for them particularly when you get sent horses like him. With the stallions they have access to it is a dream really. We thought he was very good early spring and into the summer, but he got beaten first time out. Since then he has gone on and on. He has actually got less smart at home and has got smarter on the racecourse and that is how you want it really. He is just a dream horse and an absolute star. You wouldn't have been surprised if anyone of four or five of them had won, but the only sadness is to beat Jim and Fitri Hay as they are very good supporters of mine. That is the only slight negative on it as I hate denying them a good win, but apart from that I'm thrilled.”

Reflecting on the winner's performance, Balding added, “I was fairly confident, but less confident with a furlong to go. He had been out in front a long time and Frankie felt he kicked a little earlier than ideal, but it was probably a race-winning move. He is versatile and he didn't have to make it, but it didn't look like there was any obvious pace here. What we didn't want was it to turn into a sprint and for us to be out of our ground. He will be fine and the bigger the field the better off he will be [in the G1 2000 Guineas]. He is all speed on his dam side, being out of a Dutch Art mare, and I'd be surprised if he got further than a mile. I don't know if we run him in a trial first, we will see how he is training in the spring and make a decision from there. I would be comfortable going straight there, but I can't be making that decision at the moment.”

Frankie Dettori, claiming his third Dewhurst after partnering Too Darn Hot in 2018 and St Mark's Basilica in 2020, added, “He fluffed the start, but I was able to get him up there. I thought we had it in the bag when he shot clear, but I think he kind of lost concentration a bit as he was all on his own. Jim [Crowley aboard Royal Scotsman] came late and fast and that caught him by surprise. Luckily for us, the line was there. I was nothing but impressed when I rode him at Doncaster and the first thing I said to Andrew after was to go for the Dewhurst and he obliged. He's a proper Guineas horse for next year and we can dream now.”

Olly Cole, joint-trainer of the runner-up, said, “He broke the track record when he won at Goodwood [in the G2 Richmond]. People have crabbed the race, but you can't crab the race when you break the track record. He might have been unbalanced coming down the hill and it took him a bit of time to get going. He is seriously very good and the [2000] Guineas will be right up his street. To finish like he did today was good. I've been going around the sales telling everyone he was going to win, as I thought he would and he nearly did, and the dream is still alive.”

With the benefit of hindsight, Native Trail's debut performance at Sandown June 11 looks even stronger now that the four-length runner-up Royal Patronage (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) has gone on to beat some of this card's leading protagonists in both the G2 Royal Lodge S. and G3 Acomb S. Upstaging Masekela (Ire) (El Kabeir) in a tight finish to the Superlative, Godolphin's top dog gunned down Ballydoyle's unbeaten TDN Rising Star Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in the National to take on extra gravitas and may not have needed to fully repeat that form to double his group 1 tally here. “He's a gorgeous horse with tonnes of ability,” Buick added. “You wouldn't have expected them to come stand's side, but I did anticipate a tactical race and knew he would pick up once he got daylight. He's deservedly champion 2-year-old and could be absolutely anything. He minds himself at home and brings it on in the afternoon.”

What will emerge from elsewhere to challenge his pre-eminence in the 2000 Guineas next spring is unknown at this stage, but it could be that despite his impeccable credentials Native Trail is not even the best 2-year-old in his own stable. Debates will rage throughout the winter as to whether the preceding G3 Autumn S. winner Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is the better of the pair, but for now Native Trail has the big title belts all to himself. “Had he not won the National Stakes in similar fashion, I would probably have been a bit twitchy passing halfway but knowing how this horse operates I was comfortable enough,” Appleby said. “He wasn't doing a stroke and was just going through the motions. One thing is for sure, he was not going to stop galloping once he got going and the way he accelerated there when really given the office was quite remarkable.”

“I can't see him getting any further than a mile personally, but he's an exciting Guineas horse along with Coroebus,” the Moulton Paddocks handler added. “His work at home prior to the National Stakes, you wouldn't be getting too excited but he's that sort of horse, he warms into a race and does it all the right way round and that's what we saw again today. There's a lot more to come, you'd like to say, but he is unbeaten with two group 1s. I'm not going to get too carried away. He's a big boy, 540 kilos, and came in at that weight from the breeze-ups. Full credit to the team who purchased him and Norman Williamson who consigned him. Since then, Norman has taken a keen interest.”

“Norman said after the National Stakes he still didn't know what he was doing and he was correct, because his work at home wasn't too exciting but he warms into a race and does it the right way round. I've never put him anywhere near Coroebus at home–they are different types. Coroebus travels very well and has a smart turn of foot, whereas this horse does things in a different manner.”

As Appleby stated, Native Trail was a 210,000gns Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up graduate and is the first runner for the unraced Juddmonte cast-off Needleleaf (GB) (Observatory) who was bought by the MAB Agency for just 60,000gns at the 2015 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. She is a full-sister to the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup heroine African Rose (GB) and the G3 Prix d'Aumale winner and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up Helleborine (GB), with the former producing the G3 Princess Margaret S. winner Fair Eva (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Helleborine responsible for the G2 Coventry S.-winning sire Calyx (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

The second dam New Orchid (Quest For Fame {GB}), who was third in the G3 Lancashire Oaks, is a daughter of Musicanti (Nijinsky II) who also produced the 1999 Dewhurst hero and sire Distant Music from a mating with Observatory's sire Distant View. Musicanti is kin to the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, GI Washington D.C. Juddmonte Racing Manager Barry Mahon said, “He's a big, scopey horse and took a bit of time to come to hand, but he's two from two and won nicely on his last start.

“While this is a very big ask, we just thought it was worth a go as it will further his education for next year to put him in Group 1 company.

“Part of the reason we supplemented was the weather forecast, it looks set fair and he's a horse that wants good ground. That would be our preference, so hopefully we don't get any nasty surprises with the weather.

“This is a big step from a listed at Fairyhouse to a Group 1 and it's his first try over seven furlongs, so there's a lot of variables, but we are excited to see if he can step up to that level.”

Richard Hannon holds a strong hand with Michael Pescod’s Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) looking his strongest chance after his defeat of TDN Rising Star Albasheer (Ire) (Shamardal) in Doncaster’s G2 Champagne S. Sept. 12 but Julie Wood’s Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) remains unbeaten and an unknown quantity. His two successes at Sandown include the Aug.  23 G3 Solario S.

Hannon said of the duo, “Both horses are fit and well and good to go. We’ve not managed to win the Dewhurst yet, so let’s hope this is our chance. Chindit’s last bit of work with a couple of older horses was very good for a two-year-old. He seems in very good form. Etonian has done nothing wrong either. It’s a shame we have to run them against each other really, but this is the right race for both horses and the Dewhurst is always the best two-year-old race of the year.”

Jim Crowley has picked Shadwell’s supplemented Sept. 19 G2 Mill Reef S. scorer Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) over Albasheer and Alkumait’s trainer Marcus Tregoning said, “I think he’ll stay seven furlongs fine. I suppose seven furlongs in soft ground makes it more of a test, but Showcasing’s progeny are versatile. He’ll give himself every chance of getting the trip because he settles well, or at least he did at Newbury, and if he settles as well again, I can’t see seven being a problem. I think Chindit might be the one to beat. He looked tough at Doncaster, he had to battle but came through it well. It’s the right race for us, though, and I’m pleased he’s running.”

Of Albasheer, trainer Owen Burrows said, “I’ve been happy with him since Doncaster. He did his last proper piece of work on Saturday and had a breeze midweek. He is inexperienced and this will be different for him. I’d like to think wherever Chindit finishes, we would be bang there with him–whether or not that is good enough to win, time will tell. On his pedigree he should get a mile next year and we will look to go down that route. God-willing he is good enough to be talked as a Guineas horse, but we will learn a lot more on Saturday.”

The typically strong Irish challenge is backed up by Jessica Harrington’s Sept. 12 G2 Champions Juvenile winner Cadillac (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), while Jim Bolger has enjoyed five successes here and he saddles a fascinating contender in Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}). He won his sole start in the first race of the Irish Flat turf season at Naas Mar. 23, but his owner, breeder and trainer is unconcerned about the lengthy absence.

“He hasn’t run because he started to grow–he’s grown two inches since March and I didn’t want to push him,” he explained. “That’s all settled down now. He’s been fine since the beginning of August and we’ve had an uninterrupted preparation since. I thought it would be good to get him away before the end of the year. I think he’ll go on any ground.”

Newmarket’s pattern-race action kicks off with the G3 Godolphin Flying Start Zetland S. for juveniles over 10 furlongs and Aidan O’Brien saddles an intriguing contender in Moyglare Stud, Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor’s Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Off the mark on debut over an extended mile at Galway Sept. 8, the full-brother to the dual G1 Irish St Leger heroine Search For a Song (Ire) and half-brother to Free Eagle (Ire) has ideal credentials for this stamina test. “He seems to have come out of his first race well, he was very green the first day and we’ve been happy with him since,” the Ballydoyle handler said. “We always thought he would get much further than a mile, so the step up in trip shouldn’t worry him.” Two notably-bred nursery winners in Khalid Abdullah’s Sept. 27 Nottingham scorer Fabilis (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Ballylinch Stud and Aquis Farm’s Sept. 12 Doncaster winner Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) offer fascinating opposition from the Ralph Beckett and Martyn Meade stables respectively.

In the G3 Emirates Autumn S. over a mile, there is another leading Ballydoyle contender in the Aug. 6 G3 Tyros S. and Sept. 12 G2 Champions Juvenile S. runner-up Van Gogh (American Pharoah), who enjoyed a confidence-boosting maiden success at The Curragh Sept.  27. “We think he should benefit from getting his head in front, he’s a horse that is maturing and improving every month,” Aidan O’Brien commented. In a fascinating line-up, Shadwell’s TDN Rising Star Akmaam (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) comes in on the back of his impressive winning debut over seven furlongs at Ascot Sept. 5 while Khalid Abdullah’s Maximal (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) bids to build on a novice win over this trip at Sandown Sept. 11. He was previously runner-up to Godolphin’s One Ruler (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) at that track Aug. 23 and the latter’s trainer Charlie Appleby also saddles the Aug. 15 Listed Washington Singer S. runner-up Dhahabi (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). “One Ruler put up a solid performance [when subsequently third in the Listed Flying Scotsman S.] at Doncaster, when he was slightly unlucky, and we feel that the step up to a mile will see further improvement,” he said. “Dhahabi also ran to a nice level at Newbury and has been crying out for a step up in distance. We are hoping that both colts can be very competitive at this level.”

Another TDN Rising Star takes to the Suffolk venue in The Niarchos Family’s Highest Ground (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who has not been seen since finishing second in York’s G2 Dante S. July 9 but who will be closely followed in the nine-furlong G3 Darley S. “There’s been no major issue, he just needed a bit of time,” the owner-breeders’ racing manager Alan Cooper explained. “He’s in fine fettle. It looks a very competitive race, so hopefully he’ll run well. I would imagine this will be his final run of the year, but we haven’t really discussed it. We’ll see how he performs this weekend and make a plan afterwards.” John Gosden opts to shorten up Qatar Racing and Watership Down Stud’s TDN Rising Star Darain (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) following his fifth placing in the G2 Great Voltigeur S. at York Aug. 19. At Chantilly, the six-furlong G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte sees a clash between Alain Jathiere’s impressive Sept .18 G3 Prix Eclipse scorer Plainchant (Fr) (Gregorian {Ire}), the Wertheimers’ Sept. 3 G3 Prix d’Arenberg winner Kalahara (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Tanguy Moreux’s Go Athletico (Fr) (Goken {Fr}) who beat the subsequent G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere hero Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) in the seven-furlong G3 Prix la Rochette at ParisLongchamp Sept. 6.

“He runs on Saturday and I’ve been very happy with him since Newbury,” said trainer Marcus Tregoning. “Obviously we don’t know what the ground is going to be like yet, and we don’t know how many of the Irish horses are coming over.

“Most Showcasings go on soft ground anyway and as he’s in good form, we thought we had to go for it. It’s been a while since I won the Dewhurst [with Sir Percy] in 2005, but we’ve had nothing good enough to run in it since. Hopefully this is a good horse, he’s looked it so far. The fact Sheikh Hamdan had another horse already entered didn’t come into the reckoning really.”

G1 National S. hero Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) is also stepping forward, one of three in the race for trainer Joseph O’Brien. His father Aidan also fields three, with G2 Vintage S. victor Battleground (War Front) set to take part, as is National S. second and third Wembley (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). The latter was a late scratch from the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.

“She’ll have to go into a Group 1 now, either at Newmarket or back to France,” said Fahey. “She’s a talented filly. Everyone said she’s good on the soft, but I think she wants fast ground–it’s just that she’s very good. She’s a great moving filly and I’m actually surprised she’s running so well on the soft. She’s improving and is just very smart. She’s in the Boussac and we’ll keep an eye on the Fillies’ Mile as well.”

Fahey’s Rhythm Master (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), third in the G1 Darley Prix Morny to Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), will be taking another crack at Group 1 level, the trainer revealed. Owned by John Dance of Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Ire}) fame, the bay won a maiden at Haydock in July, his only other start to date. He is under consideration for the Oct. 10 Darley Dewhurst S. at Newmarket.

“It was a huge ask going from a maiden to a Group 1 and he did show a little bit of inexperience,” said Fahey. “He half missed the start a beat and then had a think when he squared him up to get racing. I’m not saying I’d have beaten the winner, but I’d like to have been on her tail.

“Good horses go on any ground, but I would prefer to see him on better ground. He’s got plenty of options, but I’d just like to see how he comes out of this one first–maybe something like the Dewhurst–we do like him, he’s a smart horse.”
