With much of the racing calendar still ahead of us, a sophomore offered in the Fasig-Tipton July sale sale still has plenty of time to take advantage of their age-related conditions in 2023, and develop into an even better horse in the years to come. There is still plenty of blue sky for many of the 3-year-old runners in the catalog.

In an industry that seems to be going through an evolution on every front these days, one of the less controversial and more beneficial changes we've seen take place is the increase in horses of racing age (HORA) sales, which allows people to buy and sell based on their cash flow and inventory needs rather than waiting until the racing season has concluded. This week's July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale comes at a perfect time for both buyers and sellers, and the team at Fasig-Tipton has put together a great group of horses.

For buyers, it's at an advantageous time of year. We've gotten an opportunity this year to see where many of these horses will be competitive throughout the remainder of the year. For those top tier racing operations chasing those elite Grade 1 wins, they have 2-year-olds waiting for a spot at the track and they are gearing up to shop for yearlings. Their excess inventory, however, could well be the stars of the stable for the vast majority of owners and trainers.

Furthermore, this week's sale has quite a few fillies that have a good bit of racing left in them before they retire to the breeding shed. While I am no tax expert, I do know that racing stock traditionally depreciates more quickly than breeding stock, so there are some tax benefits to shopping for fillies this time of year and having some fun with them at the races before thinking about mating plans.

Analysis of WinStar Farm's Audible and Spendthrift Farm's Maximus Mischief from Kip Elser of Kirkwood Equine Advisory:

As we get later into the juvenile sales season, you really start to get a feel for how some of the more well represented sires' progeny are developing as they mature. Two that I have been watching the past few sales and wanted to save until later in the year to discuss are Maximus Mischief and Audible, both sons of Into Mischief.

The fastest 2-year-old of his crop, Maximus Mischief was known on the track for his speed, launching his career with an 8 3/4- length victory before dominating in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes. As a group, his first crop is what you'd want to see. They're good-looking horses with a nice leg to them and they're great breezers, with two stopping the clock at :9.4 this past March. It's no surprise they're catching the attention of all the right buyers. With a $63,613 average on a $7,500 stud fee, I'd say those who got in on him early are looking smart now.

Cary Frommer, who sold him as a 2-year-old at this very sale, has been paying particularly close attention to his offspring and told me the other day how impressed she is by them. He seems to have stamped them well – they're big, fast and precocious, just like he was.

Audible is an exceptionally good-looking son of Into Mischief that showed both speed and stamina. I remember seeing him as a racehorse, he had such scope, balance and class about him, and his Florida Derby win against the best of his crop was truly impressive. His offspring have been well received by buyers this season and you can see why as you watch their breezes. They have an efficiency and smoothness to their stride, not only during their breezes, but as they go into it and as they gallop out around the turn. I think there will be some nice runners in his first crop.

Keeneland's Horses of Racing Age Sale offers a unique and valuable opportunity for both buyers and sellers.

At this point in the year, we more or less know which 3-year-olds are going to be vying for spots in the starting gate for the Triple Crown races and summer Grade 1 events. Owners such as SF Bloodstock, China Horse Club, Peter Brant and Madaket Stables have 2-year-olds lined up on the chute waiting for stalls in their trainers' barns.

But, in this game, success means something different from one owner to the next. A second- or third-string horse for one owner could potentially be the head of the class or a foundation broodmare for another. With more than half of the entries being 3-year-olds with a lot more racing in their future, this spring HORA sale allows these owners to move horses on that haven't quite met that bar to make room for the next generation of potential talent.

The catalog in this week's sale includes a variety of horses that could be quite competitive in racing jurisdictions throughout the U. S. and internationally, as well as some fillies and mares that could be a feather in the cap of many breeding operations.

Analysis of Spendthrift Farm's Vino Rosso and Lane's End stallion Catalina Cruiser from Kip Elser of Kirkwood Equine Advisory:

It's always interesting to see how each year's freshman crop of juveniles evolve and develop in the time between OBS March to OBS Spring in April or even the May and June sales. Offspring by the sires we talked about last time – Omaha Beach and Mitole – continue to impress, and there are several more freshman sires that are well represented at OBS Spring.

There were several by Vino Rosso that caught my eye. While he was two-for-two as a juvenile, he was by and large known as a late developer, winning his biggest races – the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita and Breeders' Cup Classic – as a 4-year-old. Like their sire was at this stage, his offspring look like they still have some growing to do, but they are solid and well put together. They're breezing quite nicely, especially as they get into the rhythm of the breeze, and show an efficiency of stride – a good combination of power and balance with minimal wasted motion. For as big as I think they'll be when they mature, they are remarkably well put together as juveniles.

The Catalina Cruisers are also worth a look. Like Vino Rosso, Catalina Cruiser was late to develop, but once he found his stride, he became one of the top sprinters we've seen in years. He is by Union Rags, who is probably best known for his win in the Belmont Stakes, but don't forget that he won the G2 Saratoga Special as a 2-year-old by 7 1/4 lengths as part of a Grade 1-winning juvenile campaign, so that sire line is not necessarily slow early. I really like not only how the Catalina Cruisers are breezing, but also how they're galloping out, which can often tell you almost as much as the breeze itself. They're made in the same mold as their sire – stout, strong horses with some leg under them.

I'm eager to see how both of these sires' offspring develop, both as juveniles and into their 3- and 4-year-old years.

Analysis of Spendthrift Farm freshmen Omaha Beach and Mitole from Kip Elser of Kirkwood Equine Advisory:

There are some exciting new sires whose first crop are 2-year-olds this year. Having watched the breezes at OBS the past two weeks, two freshmen sires that are well represented here are Omaha Beach and Mitole.

Omaha Beach has a great pedigree on the top and bottom, and he lived up to it on the track, going a mile and an eighth early in his 3-year-old year when winning the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby against a classy group. After getting some time off due to a setback, he came back bigger and stronger, winning two Grade 1s and just missing in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. I think if he hadn't missed that training earlier in the year, he would have been the horse to beat in the Classic.

Here at OBS, his offspring have been impressive across the board. They are square, solid, good-minded horses. They aren't the quickest in the breeze shows, but they're good movers and their gallop outs are turning heads. Hip 161 in particular has everyone talking, after he put on a spectacular performance in his breeze.

Mitole is another freshman sire whose offerings have caught my eye. He was a top sprinter, winning Grade 1s going six and seven furlongs, as well as a mile.

As one would expect, his offspring are a bit smaller than Omaha Beach's, but they sure don't lack in athleticism. It looks like there is a bit more Indian Charlie coming through on the bottom of Mitole's pedigree than the Giant's Causeway/Eskandreya on top. Hip 738 in particular was very, very impressive, and was one of three by him that went :9.4 in their breezes. I wholeheartedly agree with Steve Asmussen, who said the other day that watching the Mitole's here at OBS reminds us just how good he was.
