Prizemoney at The Jockey Club's racecourses will return to pre-pandemic levels for the fourth quarter of 2021. The Jockey Club will increase its prizemoney contributions by almost £1.5-million in the final three months of the year, boosting total purses for that quarter to more than £12.5-million; the projection had been £11-million. Therefore, total prizemoney for The Jockey Club's 15 racecourses in 2021 is expected to be more than £46-million.

Prizemoney will increase across all levels at The Jockey Club's racecourses, and major races positively impacted include the G1 Darley Dewhurst S. and the G1 bet365 Fillies' Mile (advertised as £450,000, now £500,000); and the G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. (£225,000, now £250,000).

Nevin Truesdale, chief executive of The Jockey Club, said, “A big priority for us has been to get to a position in our recovery where we can advertise prizemoney at pre-pandemic levels as quickly as possible. When you add 2020 and our 2021 outlook together, the pandemic will have cost us more than £170-million in lost revenues, so originally it seemed we would need to wait until 2022 to have any chance of making this announcement, but I'm delighted and tremendously proud of the team that we're able to bring this forward.

“We're optimistic about the future, but despite today's announcement we are continuing to operate under uncertainty as a business. This includes whether any restrictions on our operations will be reintroduced or deter racegoers at any point in the remainder of 2021 or into 2022. As such we'll need to keep planning on a relatively short-term basis for the foreseeable future and contribute the maximum we can back into the sport, including all our areas of investment beyond prize money.

“It's no secret that we view prize money as vital to the livelihoods of those working in the sport; it provides an important return for racehorse owners and encourages the competitive racing that we all want to enjoy. We're working hard to drive the sort of underlying growth and commercial success that allows The Jockey Club to continue to increase its contributions to British Racing, which has always been, and will continue to be, our aim.”

The British Horseracing Authority has officially amended the result of the G1 Fillies’ Mile, where Aidan O’Brien’s fillies Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) had been saddled incorrectly, wearing each other’s saddle cloths and riders. It appeared that Snowfall had finished third and Mother Earth eighth, but it was actually the reverse.

An investigation remains ongoing in relation to the incorrect saddling of the horses. Grounds for disqualification in the BHA’s rules of racing do not include horses starting from the wrong stalls or carrying the wrong jockey. Because the horses that ran in the race were duly entered and carried the correct weight, the only possible disqualification ground would be if the horses were the subject of fraudulent practice. O’Brien said in the immediate aftermath of the race that the switch was a mistake borne from the fact that British-based staff unfamiliar with the fillies had been handling them due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. O’Brien was not at the race.

Trainer Aidan O'Brien has issued a public apology after a mix-up occurred in Friday's Fillies' Mile at Newmarket, reports the Racing Post. The Ballydoyle master's two entrants, Snowfall and Mother Earth, carried each other's numbers and intended jockeys.

Snowfall, reported to have finished third under James Doyle, actually finished eighth under William Buick.

“I contacted the BHA straight away and let them know what is after happening,” O'Brien told racingpost.com, adding that he made the call after watching the race on delay. “We have a team based in England these days because of the coronavirus restrictions, so the problem is the lads that are with the horses at home can't always go racing with them.”

“The BHA stewards have been made aware of a potential issue regarding the Group 1 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket today which may have resulted in the incorrect rider and number cloths being carried by the two horses trained by Aidan O'Brien,” reads a statement from the British Horseracing Authority. “A stewards' inquiry will be held on the racecourse tomorrow to consider all of the relevant evidence and determine the course of events and what action needs to be taken.”

Progressive 2-year-old filly Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) will be seen next in Group 1 company in either the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket on Oct. 9 or the Prix Marcel Boussac at ParisLongchamp on Oct. 4.

Nick Bradley Racing’s Fev Rover was second to Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) in the G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. on July 10 before breaking her maiden in Sandown’s Listed Star S. 11 days later. She then traveled to Deauville to take the G2 Prix du Calvados over the subsequent Group 3 winner Plainchant (Fr) (Gregorian {Ire}).

“She’ll either run in the Fillies’ Mile or the Prix Marcel Boussac, I’m not quite sure which yet,” Bradley said. “She’ll be kept in both races, and a decision will be made pretty late, probably the first couple of days in October. Going-wise, she wants good ground–it’s just a case of choosing the best race for her. In terms of opposition, she’s in great form, so we’ll just let them have a go.”
