Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Monday's Insights feature a full-brother to high-class racehorse Never Ending Story (Ire), going two furlongs farther than that sibling did on debut last term.

17.20 Killarney, Mdn, €15,000, 2yo, 8f 20yT
NAVY SEAL (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}) is introduced by Aidan O'Brien over the longest trip for a maiden in Britain and Ireland so far in 2023, going two furlongs further than his high-class full-sister Never Ending Story (Ire) did as she debuted last term. That first foal out of the GI Belmont Oaks heroine Athena (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) turned into a dual group 3 winner and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up, so this February-foaled bay has a hard act to follow. Descended from Urban Sea (Miswaki) and also connected to the G1 Irish Oaks heroine Bracelet (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), his mettle will be tested against fellow Derrick Smith colour-bearer Bremen (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the Donnacha O'Brien-trained son of the triple Australian group 1 heroine Sea Siren (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and full-brother to last month's G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Warm Heart (Ire) who created such a strong impression when narrowly failing on debut at Tipperary earlier this month.

A pair of appeals regarding the finish of the G1 Pretty Polly S. at the Curragh earlier this month have both been dismissed by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB).

George Boughey trainee Via Sistina (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), ridden by Jamie Spencer, drifted across the course near the finish and impeded placed horses when winning by two lengths earlier this month. Runner-up Stay Alert (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus])'s owners Ben and Sir Martyn Arbib appealed the stewards' decision to leave the placings as is. However, that appeal was dismissed on Tuesday.

In addition, Spencer was given a six-day ban for his mount's waywardness, but his suspension, too, remains and will take place on July 15, 17-20, and 22. Spencer's upcoming G1 July Cup ride aboard Royal Ascot longshot winner Khaadem (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) has been filled by Rob Hornby.

From 2011 to 2014, he shuttled to the now-defunct Patinack Farm, and left an indelible stamp on the Australian industry. The result was four elite-level winners of nine Group 1s; Santa Ana Lane (Aus), Vega Magic (Aus), Gytrash (Aus) and Vega One (Aus).

His potency when crossed with Fastnet Rock mares has certainly helped in accruing that total, with the mix firing at a rate of 21 per cent stakes winners to runners. Both Santa Ana Lane and Gytrash fall into that category, with their exploits no doubt driving demand on the other side of the world.

“It's a cross that seems to work very well, and it's definitely pushed an uptake up here in the last few years where we've covered a lot more Fastnet Rock mares,” Fives said. “He's very easy to breed to. He's an outcross for over 90 per cent of the mare population in Europe, so, if you're buying a mare up here, he's very easy to breed to as there are very few things you have to avoid in a pedigree.”

Fives reported that New Bay was also getting the attention of Southern Hemisphere breeders. He received the support of one of Australia's top stables at the Goffs London Sale recently. Landed on by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the aptly named New Endeavour (GB) was a £260,000 (AU$499,000) purchase for the Tulloch Lodge team, who was previously co-owned by Ballylinch and Teme Valley.

He will remain in training with Roger Varian in Newmarket before eventually making his way down to Australia.

Twice a handicap winner over 1400 metres, New Endeavour was sold in the lead up to Royal Ascot, and subsequently ran second in the high-class Britannia S., earning an official rating of 103, which puts him well in the mix at Listed level in the UK. He appears to be on a neat upward curve and may yet be New Bay's next stakes winner.

Meanwhile, Fives reported a surge of interest following that solid Royal Ascot performance. “Coming back from Ascot, more Australians were asking about him (New Bay) and curious about him,” he said. “We can probably see his profile increasing over the next few years, he's only a young sire.”

“His fee has increased every year since he's had runners. His first crop really dazzled, I suppose, and then the last season was just incredible. “He had a Group 1 winner with Saffron Beach, and then he just totally stole the show on British Champions Day when he took the two feature races with Bayside Boy and Bay Bridge.”

Imad Al Sagar's Classic winner Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) has been supplemented at a cost of £20,000 to the G1 Falmouth S. at Newmarket on July 14.

Trained by John and Thady Gosden, the dual Group 1 winner captured both the Prix de Diane and Nassau S. after running third in the G1 Oaks at Epsom last term. A good second in the G1 Prix de l'Opera that October, she ended her season with a fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf in the U.S. Now four, the Blue Diamond Stud homebred was fourth to Group 1 winner Above The Curve (American Pharoah) in the G2 Prix Corrida at Saint-Cloud in May, and improved to be second in the G3 Hoppings Fillies' S. at Newcastle at the end of June.

John Gosden, who also trains former Falmouth favourite and now G1 Sussex S.-bound Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), said, “We have supplemented her for the Falmouth. As you know, she has been very slow to come to hand this year. The race in France brought her on a bit. Again the other day, she probably went a little hard early, but didn't finish off.

“She is in great form and she needs racing, and we don't really want to be waiting from two weeks ago all the way to the Nassau S. So, it is close to home and she's in great form and I don't think she'll have any problem with the mile.”

Last week's G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine Via Sistina (Ire) (Fasnet Rock {Aus}) is one of nine signed on to face Nashwa for trainer George Boughey, while Ralph Beckett's G1 Coronation S. runner-up Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}) will carry new silks in the Newmarket showpiece having been purchased by Wathnan Racing. Aidan O'Brien will likely saddle both Breeders' Cup winner Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) and G1 Prix de Diane second Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Connections of Via Sistina (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}–Nigh {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) had an anxious wait to learn whether their star mare would keep Saturday's G1 Yulong Pretty Polly S. at The Curragh, but ultimately the inquiry accepted that Becky Hillen's uber-bargain 5,000gns Tatts December Yearling purchase was clear best despite causing significant interference. So impressive on her favoured rain-deadened ground in last month's G2 Dahlia S. at Newmarket, the George Boughey-trained 5-year-old who had also captured the G3 Prix Fille de l'Air in the autumn was confidently-supported into 6-4 favouritism despite racing on a livelier surface than ideal.

Held up in the last pair early by Jamie Spencer, she had to employ her lethal acceleration to get to Above The Curve (American Pharoah) in the straight and while she delivered that she also darted right and cut across Rosscarbery (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Stay Alert (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the process. Swooping on the lead a furlong from home, she stayed on powerfully to make the stewards' decision easier with her two-length winning margin over Stay Alert a fair reflection of her superiority. Above The Curve clung to third, 1 1/4 lengths further away, ending Ryan Moore's weekend winning streak.

“I had a plan to jump smartly, get up behind Ryan in third or fourth but she didn't and so the first thing was to get out and not to get stuck down the fence–I was on about Plan E at that stage,” Spencer explained. “She leaned in a bit early in the straight and obviously halfway down the straight, but she was much the best. I only had to give her one flick and she had her ears pricked for the last furlong. I wasn't very comfortable for the first six furlongs, but she came alive when she passed one and I was in business then. She's not hung before and you'd rather win more smoothly, but she's obviously a high-class filly. You pinch yourself after Newmarket and think, 'can she do that again?' but she has.”

Look at her go!

Via Sistina shows a great turn of foot to be first past the post in the Yulong Pretty Polly Stakes under @JPSPENCER1980 for @gbougheyracing.

Stewards Enquiry called after several runners suffered interference near the finish. @curraghrace pic.twitter.com/txE6Sopv4I

Handled with aplomb as well as care throughout the fledgling stage of her career by the now-retired Joseph Tuite, the imposing Via Sistina nevertheless managed to flash considerable talent on more than one occasion when the soft ground prevailed. In hindsight, her odds of 12-1 when taking apart a Premier Fillies' Handicap at Newmarket in October 2021 were a gift and the fact that was only her fourth start is testament to her former trainer's patience and due diligence.

Tuite only got to campaign her twice more as the long dry spell dominated the European summer of 2022 and as the rain finally came back Boughey was to instantly reap the rewards of that cautious approach. Second in Newmarket's G3 Pride S. before winning Toulouse's Prix Fille de l'Air, she cut an awesome figure on her comeback in Newmarket's Dahlia, handing Al Husn (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) a six-length thrashing which on Friday evening was made to look even better as the Shadwell homebred mastered Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) at Newcastle.

While this ground was against her reproducing her amazing final three-furlong Dahlia split of 36.76 which was significantly faster than the following 1000 Guineas, Via Sistina proved that she is able to handle top company even in adversity. “It doesn't happen like that very often,” Stephen Hillen said. “That ground is probably as fast as she wants to run on. Jamie said they went really quick, he said he missed the break and was a bit far out of her ground but when she comes good she's just much better than them. She's taken time to come and has been minded–she's 17 hands, but that cross is close to 10% group one winners and stats don't lie.”

“She's very versatile, I think she can go a mile to a mile and a half,” Hillen added. “She likes going in a straight line as well, so she could come back to a mile for the [G1] Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket. After that there is the [G1] Nassau and she'll be in most of the big races. She's in the [G1] Yorkshire Oaks and the [G1] International at York. You wouldn't be risking her on anything with 'firm' in it, but when she gets soft ground again I can see her doing something special.”

Pedigree Notes
Via Sistina's unraced dam Nigh is kin to the G1 Golden Jubilee S. and G1 Nunthorpe S. hero Kingsgate Native (Ire) (Mujadil) and to the stakes-placed Vanishing Grey (Ire) (Verglas {Ire}) who is in turn the dam of the Listed Prix Millkom winner and G2 Zabeel Mile runner-up First Contact (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). The third dam La Pellegrina (Ire) (Be My Guest) is a half-sister to the G1 1000 Guineas heroine Las Meninas (Ire) (Glenstal) from the family of the G2 Queen Mary S. and G2 Prix Robert Papin winner Signora Cabello (Ire) (Camacho {GB}). Nigh's 2-year-old colt by Ten Sovereigns (Ire) was a €90,000 purcase by Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock at the Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale, while she also has a yearling filly by Bated Breath (GB) bought for just 20,000gns by Hurworth Bloodstock at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

2nd-Saratoga, $105,000, Msw, 8-4, 2yo, f, 5 1/2fT, 1:02.45, fm, 1/2 length.
ALLURING ANGEL (GB) (f, 2, Fastnet Rock {Aus}–All of Me {GB}, by Teofilo{Ire}), a 48,000gns weanling purchase out of the 2020 Tattersalls December Foal Sale, went off as the 4-1 third choice Thursday in her career debut. Far back off the pace with only one horse beat through the opening furlong, she raced two wide outside of Gustiamo (Blame) before clearing to the rail midway around the bend. Under a ride past the quarter pole, Alluring Angel swung out five wide as the field straightened and began to rally with authority down the center of the lane. As pacesetter Illicit (Into Mischief) tired into the final eighth, post-time favorite Cowichan (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) briefly took over from the three path before being inhaled on the outside by a fast closing Alluring Angel who stormed past in the final strides to win by a half-length. Illicit would fade to wind up fifth. The winner is bred on a similar cross to this owner's Star Devine (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who achieved 'TDN Rising Star' honors with a fast-finishing debut victory at Aqueduct in April 2021. Star Devine, who won last year's Galway S. at the Spa, is out of a daughter of the late Galileo (Ire), while Thursday's winner is out of a mare by Galileo's successful son Teofilo (Ire). All Of Me (GB), herself a half-sister to MG1SP I Can Fly (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), has since produced a yearling colt by Showcasing (GB) and dropped a colt by Earthlight (Ire) in 2022. THINK CLIMATE (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) is a full-brother to the G2 Mill Reef S. and G3 Greenham S.-winning sire James Garfield (Ire) who has made a bright start to his stud career. Jane Chapple-Hyam has charge of the Gredley Family's homebred, who has a high bench to aim at Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's Marbaan (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), a relative of Ribchester (Ire) who was third in a decent maiden at Newbury last month.

3.10 Newbury, Listed, £52,000, 3yo, f, 10fT
GOLDEN LYRA (IRE) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) is the latest potential class act to emerge from William Haggas's Somerville Lodge Stables which has carried all before it in recent weeks. Carrying the renowned Sunderland Holding silks, the homebred whose dam is a full-sister to Sea the Moon (Ger) won by five lengths on her sole start at Newmarket in October and reappears in this Listed Greatwood British EBF S., or Abingdon S. as it is better known. She will be tested by some smart yardsticks including Ben and Sir Martyn Arbib's Listed Haras de Bouquetot Fillies' Trial runner-up Stay Alert (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and Kirsten Rausing's G3 Musidora S. third Ching Shih (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}).

A colt foal by Fastnet Rock (Aus) (lot 675) starred at Deauville as trade wound down a notch during the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale on Monday. Consigned by Haras de Castillon, who had also offered eventual €2.5-million buy and Group 1 winner Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), the bay is out of the winning Purple Magic (GB) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}). He was purchased by Benoit Jeffroy on behalf of Manister House Stud for €60,000.

Besides the top lot, race fillies and broodmares were the most sought after, especially those in foal to promising young sire Zarak (Fr). Zarak already has a pair of Group 1-placed horses and two black-type winners to his credit. One of the former, G1 Criterium International runner-up Purplepay (Fr) brought €2 million during Saturday's session.

Haras de Cercy's Anjella (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) (lot 782), sold in foal to the son of Dubawi (Ire), made €45,000 from Jeffroy's Ecurie Castillon Bloodstock on behalf of Magic Dream. A full-sister to German listed heroine Ambria (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), the chestnut 15-year-old has produced Stable Genius (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who ran third in the G3 Prix la Force. This is also the family of G1 Preis der Diana heroine Amarette (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}).

Joining Anjella at €45,000 is the 3-year-old Siyouni (Fr) filly Dariyla (Fr) from His Highness The Aga Khan's Studs. Also in foal to the Aga Khan's Zarak, lot 832 caught the eye of BBA Ireland. She is a descendant of French champion G1 Prix de Diane victress Daryaba (Ire) (Night Shift), who also landed the G1 Prix Vermeille.

Yet another carrying to the Haras de Bonneval resident, Seemingly (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) hammered at €36,000 to Guy Pariente. From the Haras du Quesnay draft, lot 658 is out of Listed Prix Vulcain heroine Oh Beautiful (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and is from the same family as outstanding bluehen Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}).

Haras du Buff sent Geneva Spur (Distorted Humor) (lot 644), in foal to first-year covering sire Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), through the ring and the 5-year-old was purchased by Six of Us for €42,000. Group winners Silk and Scarlet (GB) (Sadler's Wells) and Danger Over (GB) (Warning {GB}) are full- and half-sisters to her dam, My Dark Rosaleen (GB) (Sadler's Wells). Silk and Scarlet foaled subsequent Group 1 winners Eishin Apollon (Giant's Causeway) (Japan), Master of Hounds (Kingmambo) (Dubai) and Minorett (Smart Strike) (United States).

The Aga Khan's Studs' Deriyana (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}) (lot 835) was knocked down to Crispin de Moubray for €36,000 near the end of Monday's session. Although unraced, the 3-year-old is well-bred, being a daughter of the dual listed-placed Deremah (More Than Ready), herself a half-sister to French listed winner Dariyma (Fr) (City Zip), who would also place third in the G2 Prix Dollar. Under the group-placed third dam is the 2006 G1 Prix du Jockey Club winner Darsi (Fr) (Polish Precedent).

At the close of business on Monday, the gross was well up on 2020's at €2,119,500 for 205 sold from 276 offered (74.3%), from an admittedly bigger catalogue. The average and median were slightly off the 2020 marks as well at €10,339 and €7,000, respectively.

The fourth and final session of the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale begins at 11 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
