Tightening from even money to jump at exactly 2-5, the $40,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling switched off beautifully and settled in a three-wide third behind fractions of :23.22 and :46.74. Slipped a bit of rein at the three-eighths, Thorpedo Anna loomed up under a hold and was held together for the run into the stretch, and when Brian Hernandez, Jr. went for her in earnest in upper stretch, the response was equal parts instantaneous and devastating, as Thorpedo Anna widened through the final eighth of a mile to take it by nine lengths without ever feeling the crop. She covered her final two furlongs in a very strong :23.84 while not fully extended.

A $40,000 purchase by the shrewd Ken McPeek at last year's Fasig-Tipton October Sale, Thorpedo Anna is a maternal great-granddaughter of Aldebaran Light, the dam of GISW Eskendereya (Giant's Causeway) and the Group 1-winning juvenile Balmont (Stravinsky). Sataves is the dam of the yearling colt McAfee (Cloud Computing), a $40,000 purchase out of this year's Keeneland September Sale, and was most recently covered by Known Agenda.

LEXINGTON, KY – The Fasig-Tipton October Yearlings Sale concluded Thursday with a solid renewal which very nearly kept pace with its record-setting 2022 version even in the midst of a softening yearling market and a backdrop of uncertainty in the global economy and geo-political landscape.

“It was a very successful 2023 Fasig-Tipton October sale,” Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. said after the last horse went through the ring Thursday evening. “The results were very similar to last year and very similar to the 2021 results, which is pretty remarkable when you consider everything that is happening in the world that we live in, from the economy to some of the challenges our industry has faced. To have 1,600 horses on offer the last four days and to be standing in the back walking ring with five horses to go and it is full of people and there is enthusiasm and activity, it shows the resiliency of our industry.”

Through four sessions, 1,064 yearlings grossed $51,120,000. The average of $48,045 dipped 4.6% from last year's record figure and the median of $24,000 was down 4.0% from another 2022 record.

The buy-back rate was 21.5%. It was 18.7% a year ago.

“The good news for all consignors is that, if you have a late-maturing horse, or a horse that has a little bit of an issue, you can bring that horse here. Can this sale support a very good horse? The answer is absolutely, positively, yes. I think this sale has established itself on the calendar as a very legit sale, one that you have to attend and participate in, whether you are a buyer or a seller. We look forward to continued growth and continued great graduates coming from this sale.”

Ocala horseman Karl Keegan made the highest bid of Thursday's final session of the auction, going to $330,000 to acquire a colt by Bolt d'Oro from the Knockgriffin Farm consignment.

Denali Stud consigned the second and third highest prices of the session, with Mike Ryan going to $310,000 for a son of Into Mischief and Jacob West going to $275,000 on behalf of Mike Repole for a daughter of Curlin.

The auction was a case of feast or famine, according to Denali's Conrad Bandoroff.

“When you lead a horse up here, you are in one of two positions,” Bandoroff said. “You are either coming up for a horse sale or you are coming up for a funeral. I think this market is highlighting the polarization. If you have one that is a quality individual who vets, there is a good market for it. If you have a horse that doesn't vet or doesn't have the commercial physical, it's going to be a difficult market and you've got to be realistic about it. But that could also be the definition of a fair market as well. We are having a good sale. We've been fortunate that we've had some good horses here and the good horses are selling well.”

Ryan, who purchased 10 yearlings for $2,195,000 during the auction, found plenty of competition for the yearlings he followed up to the ring.

“We were runner-up quite a bit, too,” Ryan said. “We were getting hammered. But we do feel like we got some quality at good value. It is the last stop and there are a lot of horses here. You have to look at a lot of horses to find the ones you want. But there are some nice pedigrees here. And obviously there is money here for the good ones. It's a solid sale and it's getting better every year.”

Keegan Stretches for Bolt d'Oro Colt

Looking to play at the upper echelon of the pinhooking game, Karl Keegan of Lucan Bloodstock stretched to $310,000 to acquire a colt by Bolt d'Oro (hip 1575) late in Thursday's final session of the Fasig-Tipton October sale.

“We are going to pinhook the horse,” Keegan said after signing the ticket on the bay colt. “It seems like all of these sales–especially the 2-year-old sales–are going to the upper end of the market, so we are trying to buy really, really good physicals by good stallions and hopefully it works out back in the springtime.”

The colt is out of Whirl (Curlin), a full-sister to graded winner Pacific Wind and a half to multiple graded winner Strike a Deal (Smart Strike). Consigned by Jim FitzGerald's Knockgriffin Farm, he was purchased for $145,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale and RNA'd for $240,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale in August.

“He was an outstanding physical,” Keegan said of the yearling. “He was at Saratoga and it looked like he went through a bad patch there. They took him back and gave him some time. And he really blossomed and showed himself well here. He's an exciting prospect for Lucan Bloodstock.”

Keegan admitted he had gone past his initial budget for the youngster.

“We were at $150,000 to $175,000, but my guy stretched,” Keegan said. “This was the only horse I wanted to walk away from the sale with. And my guy stood in and supported me.”

Lucan Bloodstock also purchased a colt by Tom's d'Etat (hip 1332) for $80,000 and a colt by Outwork (hip 1573) for $15,000.

Keegan said there was plenty of competition for the pinhooking prospects he was shopping for.

“It was very strong for the horses I was on,” Keegan said. “I came up here trying to buy these physicals to be in the upper echelon of the market at the 2-year-old sales. Those horses were really hard to buy.”

Ryan Strikes for Into Mischief Colt

Bloodstock agent Mike Ryan, busy all week at the Fasig-Tipton October sale, made his highest-priced purchase of the four-day auction Thursday, going to $320,000 to acquire a colt by Into Mischief (hip 1482).

“He's a beautifully bred horse,” Ryan said of the yearling. “He's going to be a two-turn horse. He has plenty of size and stretch and scope for an Into Mischief. He's got a serious pedigree. If he can perform on the racetrack, he's got a lot of appeal as a stallion.”

The bay colt, bred by My Meadowview and consigned by Denali Stud, is out of multiple graded stakes winner Tin Type Gal (Tapit), who is a daughter of Grade I winner Miss Shop (Deputy Minister).

“They are averaging $750,000 for the yearlings,” Ryan said of Into Mischief's knockout season at the sales this fall. “The median is $525,000. So this [final price of $320,000] is less than half the average. Of course it's the end of the year, but this horse has a lot of upside if he can perform.”

Curlin Filly to Repole

Mike Repole, who along with his partners will send champion Nest (Curlin) through the sales ring at Fasig-Tipton in a week and a half, restocked with another filly by Curlin Thursday at Newtown Paddocks when bloodstock agent Jacob West made a final bid of $275,000 to acquire hip 1441. The gray filly was consigned by Denali Stud on behalf of Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings.

“Mike has had a little bit of success with Curlin through the years,” West said after signing the ticket on the yearling. “It's the old saying, if it's not broke, don't fix it. She was just a beautiful filly and has the pedigree, through and through.”

The yearling is out of Tapping Pearl (Tapit), a daughter of Cat Dancer (Storm Cat) and a half-sister to Grade I winner Drill (Lawyer Ron).

West, on behalf of Repole, as well as other clients, has purchased six yearlings this week in Lexington.

“The market is incredibly harsh right now,” West said. “If you don't have the pedigree and the physical and the vetting, you get crucified. I feel bad for the breeders because I know how much work it takes to get them up to this ring. That's the unfortunate side of our business right now. It's incredibly polarizing. I don't see it changing for the foreseeable future.”

The polarized market has allowed him to find some bargains this week, West agreed.

“The first day of the sale, we bought a Quality Road filly for $3,000 and we bought a Gun Runner colt for $42,000,” he said. “They were just horses that the market didn't perceive to be what they wanted and they fell through the cracks. We had done our homework and due diligence and picked them up.

“The Quality Road filly had some significant vet issues, but $3,000 for a Quality Road filly, you're going to take a chance. The Gun Runner colt was just a backward horse. He didn't have the physical that everyone was looking for here. But for all of Mike's purposes, he will be patient on a horse like that, let him grow up and fill out. If he goes on and wins a big race, everybody will say, 'How the hell did they buy him for $42,000?' If you are willing to sacrifice on one of those things, you can find some bargains here.”

West concluded, “I'd say there are going to be some really good runners that come out of this sale. There are every year. It doesn't always have to be the sale topper that you land on.”

LEXINGTON, KY-The Fasig-Tipton October Yearlings Sale produced its strongest session of the week Wednesday at Newtown Paddocks, bringing its cumulative figures within striking distance of its 2022 record levels. Through three sessions, 790 yearlings have grossed $38,981,000 for an average of $49,343 and a median of $23,500. The average is down just 4.5% from the same point of last year's sale and the median is down 6%.

“It was another solid day,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. “Today the numbers were up over the similar session last year and we are trending very closely to last year's overall numbers, which is pretty remarkable considering how the sale took another huge leap last year. It is very encouraging to be in the same neighborhood. It's a healthy marketplace in terms of people wanting to own horses, but they demand quality.”

Jessie Longoria made the session's highest bid when going to $725,000 to acquire a colt by Justify on behalf of Zane Kiehne and Grier Brunson, the same clients for whom he purchased a $500,000 son of Bernardini during Tuesday's session.

The session-topping yearling was consigned by Hunter Valley Farm, which also consigned the day's second highest priced offering, a $500,000 son of Practical Joke, and the co-third highest priced lot, a $460,000 son of Curlin.

“We had some more fire power today,” Browning said. “The top end is very strong, reflecting the strong demand for the top offerings. There were some very nice physicals that matched up with the pedigrees. There was lots of competition to the very end. The back walking ring had tons of people in it when the last horse went through the ring. We are encouraged through three-quarters of the sale and we look forward to tomorrow.”

The Fasig-Tipton October sale concludes with a final session Thursday with bidding beginning at 10 a.m.

Justify Colt to Kiehne and Brunson

Jessie Longoria, who purchased the first Thoroughbred for Zane Kiehne and Grier Brunson Tuesday, doubled the new stable's roster when going to $725,000 to acquire a colt by Justify (hip 1023) from the Hunter Valley Farm consignment Wednesday at Fasig-Tipton. A day earlier, Longoria had signed the ticket at $500,000 for a colt by Bernardini.

“We had our eye on this horse from the time we got here,” Longoria said. “We were debating about this one or the other one. So they said, 'Get them both.' So they are happy. They are going to have a good time with them.”

The chestnut colt is out of Palace Princess (Hard Spun), who is a daughter of graded-placed Arienza (Giant's Causeway) and a granddaughter of champion Azeri (Jade Hunter).

“For one thing, he's by Justify,” Longoria said of the colt's appeal. “That was the main thing. And then he's just an athletic-looking horse that I think they are going to enjoy. It looks like he will have a lot of speed, plus the pedigree. He's just a nice individual.”

After making his two session-topping bids, Longoria was back to shopping for his pinhooking partnerships Wednesday.

“There is not much difference,” he said when comparing between shopping for his new deep-pocketed clients and for the pinhook ventures. “We want the same horses. They just want the higher-end horses. I am just trying to give them the best odds. If they are willing to spend the money and get a nice colt with pedigree, better for them. Unfortunately, for the pinhooking, that's way out of my league. And it's awfully risky to buy that kind of horse to try to flip over. Any little thing can happen.”

Of the market for the pinhooking prospects, Longoria said, “It's a little tough. But it's like every sale. Everything is tough. The good ones rise to the top and the other ones we fight over. And try to make do with what we've got.”

Lynch, Durtschi Score with Justify Colt

Andre Lynch and Pat Durtschi purchased Palace Princess (Hard Spun) for $80,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton February sale and put the granddaughter of champion Azeri (Jade Hunter) in foal to Justify. The resulting colt sold for $180,000 at the 2022 Keeneland January sale and then resold for $220,000 at that year's Keeneland September sale. The mare's second foal, another colt by the Triple Crown winner (hip 1023), proved even more popular in the sales ring, selling for $725,000 to Jessie Longoria Wednesday at Fasig-Tipton.

“She looked terrible,” Lynch said with a laugh of the mare's appearance at the 20202 auction. “She had mange all over her, but she was beautiful underneath. She was a great walker, correct. We bid against John Sikura from $20,000 to $80,000, but we still wanted her.”

Of the sale-topping colt, Lynch said, “The plan was always to bring him here because he was a late foal. He was an early May foal and we didn't enter him in September. He was just entered for October.”

Lynch, who previously served as stallion nominations manager at Coolmore, said he was a big fan of the farm's Triple Crown-winning stallion, Justify.

“This is the best stallion in America at the moment,” Lynch, celebrating the result with Pat and Brittany Durtschi back at the Hunter Valley sale barn, said. “It's fantastic. And I thank Coolmore for letting us breed the mare to him.”

The 7-year-old Palace Princess, one of just two mares Lynch and Durtschi own together, is back in foal to Munnings.

“Hopefully, we can breed her back to Justify again,” Lynch said.

Practical Joke to Eurton

A colt by Practical Joke (hip 1194) will be joining the barn of trainer Peter Eurton after bloodstock agent Phil Hager signed the ticket at $500,000 to secure the yearling on behalf of an undisclosed West Coast client. Hager signed the ticket in the name of Mayberry Farm.

“I thought he was a standout of the sale,” Hager said. “He was just a really nice physical by a good, proven stallion.”

The yearling was consigned by Hunter Valley Farm on behalf of breeder Robert Hibbert, II. He is out of Runninwiththewind (Medaglia d'Oro), who is out of the A.P. Indy mare Brilliant Disguise. Jayne Johnson, who raised the yearling on her farm in Shelbyville, purchased Runninwiththewind on behalf of Hibbert for $115,000 at the 2019 Keeneland January sale.

“That will never happen again,” Hibbert said after watching the colt sell late in Wednesday's session. “You just have to get lucky every now and again.”

Hibbert, who has been in the breeding industry for three decades and currently has just three broodmares, was celebrating his highest sale result.

“I've been in the business long enough to only have three mares,” Hibbert said with a laugh.

Asked about the mare's appeal in 2019, Hibbert said, “The Medaglia d'Oro with A.P. Indy on the bottom. And she was affordable.”

The mare's first foal, a filly by Speightstown, sold for $160,000 at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton October sale. She also produced a colt by Munnings who sold for $130,000 as a weanling at the 2021 Keeneland November sale.

“I was thinking $150,000 to $200,000, perhaps,” Hibbert said of expectations for the yearling Wednesday.

Johnson, asked if she expected the yearling to bring that kind of price, admitted, “No. But I am always hopeful. But I did not expect it. Because I've been in the business long enough.”

Runninwiththewind has a weanling colt by Justify and she may return to that stallion next spring.

Curlin Colt Kick Starts Wednesday Session

A colt by Curlin, who is a half-brother to GI Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) (hip 809), got Wednesday's third session of the Fasig-Tipton October sale off to a quick start when selling for $460,000. Bloodstock agent Donato Lanni signed the ticket on behalf of Frank Fletcher. Ramiro Restrepo was underbidder on the chestnut.

The yearling, who was bred by SF Bloodstock and the Curlin Syndicate, was consigned by Hunter Valley Farm. A partnership led by Hunter Valley's Adrian Regan purchased the colt for $225,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale.

“The likes of Donato and Ramiro appreciated the age of the horse and how much improvement there is to come,” said Regan. “He has a very late foaling date [May 23]. I signed the ticket last year as Long Run Stable because I was thinking at the time it might take until October. And this sale is a very good sale for horses that need a bit of time.”

Regan continued, “I think it's the most I ever had in a pinhook anyway. It's a syndicate that bought him last year–Mark Dwyer and Willie Browne, John Wade, Barry Claughessy, and myself. Mark and Willie were calling me for updates and I kept saying, 'He's coming, he's coming, he's definitely coming.' In mid-August when I came back from Saratoga, we decided to give him another six weeks. And since mid-September, he really started to thrive. The staff on the farm has really done an amazing job with this colt. Fergus [Galvin] and I loved him. We lunged him and he was so light on his feet and he has a super temperament.
Bloodstock agent Donato Lanni, who began the session buying a colt by Curlin (hip 809) for $460,000 on behalf of Frank Fletcher, came back to acquire a filly by the sire (hip 943) for that same price on behalf of Michael Lund Petersen midway through the day Wednesday at Fasig-Tipton.

“I bought them for two amazing clients,” Lanni said. “And what can you say about Curlin? The career he has had as a stallion is unbelievable. It makes the decision easier when you find one that's by him and looks like a runner. It gives you the confidence that you want to buy the horse.”

Hip 943 is out of graded-placed Munchkin Money (Freud), a half-sister to stakes winner Here Comes Rita (Raffie's Majesty) and from the family of Letgomyecho, the dam of champion Echo Zulu and GISW Echo Town.

The yearling, consigned by Denali Stud, was bred by T & G Farm of Kentucky, which purchased the mare in foal to American Pharoah for $220,000 at the 2020 Keeneland November sale.

“There are a lot of horses here and you've got to get through them all,” Lanni said of the October sale. “This filly, the first time I saw her was this morning. We were so busy doing the other barns. And this was the last barn we saw this morning.”

Medaglia d'Oro Filly Heads West

A filly by Medaglia d'Oro (hip 822) will be joining Lee and Susan Searing's C R K Stable after April Mayberry signed the ticket at $380,000 to secure the yearling Wednesday in Lexington. Bred by Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds and Godolphin and consigned by Paramount Sales, the dark bay is out of stakes winner Magical (Tapit). The mare is a daughter of graded winner Magical Feeling (Empire Maker) and is a full-sister to multiple stakes winner Exulting and a half to stakes winner Occult (Into Mischief), who was third in this summer's GI Acorn S. and GI Cotillion S.

“She's lovely,” Mayberry said. “I really liked her. She looks like she has a little speed, which I like for a Medaglia d'Oro and she's just put together really well. She's a late foal, so I think she has a lot of good things to do moving forward. She will go to the races on the West Coast. She will probably go to John Shirreffs.”

Of the four-day auction with a catalogue of some 1,600 yearlings, Mayberry said, “I love this sale. It's a sale that you just have to work at it. They are there. And I like that. It's a lot of ground to cover, but you can find them.”

STRETCH RIDE (c, 2, Street Sense–Q Go Girl {SP}, by Quality Road) handled his first two-turn attempt with aplomb, drawing away to win clear Saturday at Keeneland. Off at 9-1 having graduated with a late-running victory over six furlongs at Churchill Downs Sept. 17, the bay colt took up a position from between rivals as Astronomico (Frosted) set a quick early pace at the fence while odds-on Lightline (City of Light) was trapped out three deep through a half in :47.56. Stretch Ride was allowed to nose in front by Martin Chuan at the three-eighths marker and was scrubbed along, but was doing the better work inside of the chalk, who was doing his best to keep pace. Despite hanging on his incorrect lead for the length of the short stretch, Stretch Ride went away with each stride and had 5 3/4 lengths on Lightline–a big-figure debut winner at Horseshoe Indianapolis–at the wire. Seize the Grey (Arrogate), a latest fourth in the GIII Iroquois S., plugged on at one pace to be a non-threatening third. Purchased for just $5,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October sale, Stretch Ride made for a nice profit when hammering for €100,000 at this year's Arqana May breeze-up sale. Jackpot Ranch acquired Stretch Ride's dam for $147,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Horses of Racing Age sale in 2019 a short time after she finished third in the Panthers S. at Prairie Meadows. Stretch Ride is her first foal and is followed by a weanling colt by Yaupon. She was most recently covered by Street Sense's Grade I-winning son Speaker's Corner. oftlineSales history: $5,000 Ylg '22 FTKOCT; €100,000 2yo '23 ARQMAY. Sent off at pennies shy of 14-1 for this first trip to the races, Stretch Ride led briefly after the break before allowing favored Handsome Herb (Practical Joke) to take up the running. Off the bridle and ridden along by Peruvian Martin Chuan three furlongs out, he was put to a more vigorous drive in upper stretch, angled out three wide leaving the eighth pole and edged past pace-pressing Agoo (Munnings) to take it by a half-length. After earning her lone career stakes placing in the 2019 Panthers S., Q Go Girl was purchased by Jackpot Ranch for $147,000 at that year's Fasig-Tipton Summer HORA Sale.

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hanshin and Tokyo Racecourses. The weekend's main event takes place Sunday at Hanshin, where the world's top-rated racehorse Equinox (Jpn) returns in the G1 Takarazuka Kinen:

TOMODACHI (c, 3, Mendelssohn–Grace Is Gone, by Malibu Moon), a $100,000 purchase out of the 2020 Keeneland November Sale, matured nicely into a $235,000 Fasig-Tipton October Yearling and was one of five horses to breach the seven-figure threshold when fetching $1.3 million from trainer Mitsu Nakauchida at the 2022 OBS April Sale (breeze video). A late January foal, the chestnut is maternal grandson of Grade I-placed Grace Anatomy (Aldebaran), whose stakes-placed daughter Retro (Giant's Causeway) accounted for recent Churchill maiden winner American Retro (American Pharoah). B-Marcus Stables LLC (KY)

DANON SWITCH (JPN) (c, 2, American Pharoah–Switch In Time {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida in utero for $350,000 at the 2020 Keeneland November Sale, and the February foal repaid that bill and then some when hammering to Danox Co. for the equivalent of $1,359,264 at the JRHA Select Sale in 2021. Switch In Time is out of dual Grade I winner Switch (Quiet American), who is also responsible for the Irish Group 3-placed Kiss You Later (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Christophe Lemaire has the call. B-Shunsuke Yoshida

MAPLE GANG (c, 2, War Front–Crimson Maple, by Rahy) is a half-brother to four winners from five to race and is a half-brother to five-time stakes winner Goldwood (Medaglia d'Oro). A $200,000 KEESEP yearling, the Apr. 17 foal is out of a daughter of GISW Maplejinsky (Nijinsky II), the dam of 1993 Filly Triple Crown heroine Sky Beauty (Blushing Groom {Fr}). Maplejinsky also serves as the granddam of GI Breeders' Cup Distaff upsetter Pleasant Home (Seeking the Gold), MGSW & MGISP Country Hideaway (Seeking the Gold), GISW Tale of Ekati (Tale of the Cat) and GSW Tale of Silence (Tale of the Cat). Photo Call was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for $2.7 million with this colt in utero at KEENOV in 2019, and is also responsible for a Maurice (Jpn) colt that sold for nearly $1.2 million as a foal in 2021. There is further pedigree to recommend her, as How My Heart Works is a half-sister to MSW & MGSP Awesome Flower (Flower Alley), the dam of current dual Grade I winner and GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile runner-up Cyberknife (Gun Runner).

LEXINGTON, KY – With some 75 horses still to go through the ring, the 2022 Fasig-Tipton October Yearlings Sale overtook its record gross set just last year and, by the close of business Thursday, 1,100 yearlings had grossed $55,426,500. The 2021 gross was $52,607,500 for 1,153 yearlings sold. Also surpassing records set last year were the average of $50,388 and the median of $25,000. The previous marks were $45,627 and $22,000, respectively.

“Another remarkable sale concluded tonight,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “You are always thrilled when you set records for your gross, your average and your median price, particularly considering the 2021 sale had a dramatic increase from previous years as well. It was just a remarkable horse sale from start to finish.”

Trainer Wesley Ward made the biggest purchase of Thursday's session–and of the whole auction–when he paid $700,000 for a daughter of Gun Runner from the Claiborne Farm consignment. The yearling was the third most-expensive filly to ever sell at the October sale and the auction's fifth highest price.

The sale topper was one of 56 yearlings to sell for $200,000 or over. Forty reached that mark a year ago.

“We were optimistic coming in, a) because of the market, but b) because we knew the consignors and sellers had supported us with better horses than in the past,” Browning said. “Probably the most gratifying thing is that, for many sellers, the October sale has become a first option, not a last option. I think the men and women who brought quality horses here were really rewarded by bringing horses that had great appeal across the market. I think the confidence level that this sale has now achieved amongst buyers and sellers is tremendous. When you look at the catalogue cover and you see the three [Grade I winners] on the front and you see a horse like Hot Rod Charlie on the back cover, that's what makes a sale. Buyers can come and expect to buy horses that can compete next weekend in the Breeders' Cup and sellers can bring quality horses here and get rewarded for bringing them, whether they bring $50,000, $75,000 or $700,000. I think there is a high level of confidence amongst both buyers and sellers. The October sale has become a staple in the marketplace. ”

A Gun Runner Filly for Ward

Wesley Ward was at nearby Keeneland saddling the winner of the day's second race when a filly by Gun Runner (hip 1364) went through the sales ring at Fasig-Tipton, but with bloodstock agent Ben McElroy handling bidding duties, the trainer secured the yearling for a sales-topping $700,000 Thursday. The filly was consigned by Claiborne Farm on behalf of her breeder, Rich Santulli's Colts Neck Stables. When Ward first saw the filly, he told Claiborne's Walker Hancock that he had found his GI Kentucky Oaks winner, but the trainer admitted Thursday the yearling reminded him of sprint champion Judy the Beauty (Ghostzapper), whom he purchased for $20,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September sale.

“When Ben brought me over to see her, what she really reminded me of was Judy the Beauty,” Ward said. “She has a lot of the physical attributes she had when I bought her, except it was a difference of $20,000 versus $700,000.

“That's a big difference,” he added with a laugh.

The chestnut filly is out of the unraced No More Parties (Speightstown), who is a full-sister to Santulli's Grade I winner Force the Pass.

“She's a great physical by a sire who is off to a sensational start from a really nice family,” McElroy said. “I loved the bottom side of the family, too. Mr. P with Roberto on the bottom side and the dam is a full to a good horse. Regardless of whether she was by Gun Runner, she was a really top physical. She ticked all of the boxes.”

Asked who he bought the filly for, Ward said, “For myself. Right now anyway. I hope to [add partners], of course, or it's going to empty out everything I've got. But this is what I do, it's the only thing I've ever done my whole life. You've got to invest in what you believe in.”

Ward purchased five yearlings at the Fasig-Tipton October sale. In addition to hip 1364, he also acquired a filly by Into Mischief (hip 336) for $425,000.

“I only got three total horses at Keeneland,” Ward said. “Everything that Ben showed me that I got excited about, they were just unattainable for what I put to my clients. We went way higher than we should have on a lot of them trying to chase them up there. So only having three horses and me being a 2-year-old guy, I really didn't have anything. I was lucky enough Ben bought some nice horses for Barbara [Banke] and some other clients of mine in Europe, but here in the States, at Keeneland, I just didn't get anything. I think [October] is a great sale for me and I think I got some really nice horses.”

Hip 1364 had originally been expected to sell at last month's Keeneland September sale, according to Hancock.

“She was a Book 1 scratch at Keeneland a couple of days before the sale,” Hancock said. “We thought she could be doing better and we didn't want to sell her at what would maybe be a discount, so we decided to try her here figuring she could be a big fish in a small pond. And sure enough it looks like she is. We are thrilled with the result and very excited for the owners.”

Hancock admitted Claiborne was making an unusual appearance at the October sale.

“We are not really familiar with the October sale,” he said. “We just had an overflow of yearlings this year. We only sell what we raise, yearling-wise, and we didn't have enough stalls to sell them all in September, so we had to choose some to come to this sale. The first three days were definitely not as good for us. But this filly stood out. She's a very classy filly.”

Carlisle Makes Solid Contact

Lauren Carlisle waited all week for a filly by Uncle Mo (hip 1429) to stride into the Fasig-Tipton sales ring and the bloodstock agent would not be denied Thursday, going to $485,000 to secure the yearling on behalf of an undisclosed client.

“First of all I am feeling relieved,” Carlisle said after signing the ticket on the yearling. “I saw this filly on Sunday and I haven't stopped thinking about her since. She was my favorite filly. I haven't bid on any other horse besides her. So it's been a long week.”

Carlisle admitted bidding at the Keeneland September sale last month felt like sledding uphill.

“I took some pretty big swings in September and I felt like the Yankees in the post-season,” she said. “I just couldn't connect on anything. So I am pretty relieved and very happy. She's a lovely filly.”

Hip 1429 is out of Pearl Turn (Bernardini) and is a half-sister to Canadian champion Gretzky the Great (Nyquist). She was bred and consigned by Anderson Farms, which purchased Pearl Turn for $310,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November sale.

“We pointed her to this sale,” said Dave Anderson. “I had two Uncle Mo fillies to sell this year and I put one in Keeneland and this one here. She just thrived in the prepping process and exploded into the type of filly that we thought she was all along. She is very athletic, never had a pimple on her. She's a half to a Grade I winner and a champion horse. She just kind of ticked all the boxes. I am thrilled that Lauren got her. I know how much she loved her.”

Anderson sold the filly's half-brother Robitaille (Quality Road) for $560,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton October sale.

“Fasig-Tipton has done an amazing job with this sale and they have proven that you can get a lot of money for the right horse,” Anderson said of the October sale. “I've been fortunate enough to do it for several years now, so I am not afraid to bring the right horse here. I know I will get the money and this was an example of that.”

Broks Not Too Busy for First Breeders' Cup Starter

Glenn and Becky Brok ended two decades of breeding Thoroughbreds in Pennsylvania with the sale of their Diamond B Farm earlier this year, but the couple will be celebrating their first Breeders' Cup starter as breeders when I'm Very Busy (Cloud Computing) goes postward in Friday's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. The colt was co-bred with Mark Toothaker in a partnership designed to take advantage of Pennsylvania's breeders awards program.

“Mark and I have done mares before. He always supports Spendthrift stallions and he breeds mares, some of which he keeps and foals himself, and some he and I partner on because he wants to get them in a state program,” Glenn Brok said. “He would send the mares to Becky and me and the deal was, we would foal the mares and the foal was a registered Pennsylvania-bred. When we sold that foal, we were halfsies on the proceeds and we got to keep the mare. We did that on a couple of mares, hoping the foals run in Pennsylvania and we are the recipients of breeders' awards.”

As part of the partnership, Toothaker sent the mare Two Kisses (Kissin Kris) to Diamond B Farm while she was carrying a foal from the first crop of GI Preakness S. winner Cloud Computing. While most of the partners' foals were sold privately off the farm to local trainers and owners, Two Kisses' colt was considered to have enough commercial appeal to head to public auction.

“I sent him to my son-in-law Carlos and my daughter Sarah in Kentucky and they finished prepping him for us and sent him back to Maryland and we sold him with Blake-Albina,” Brok said. “Ronnie [Blake] did a great job selling him to James Layden, who gave $50,000 for him and later took him to an OBS sale. He sold him [for $135,000] to Lauren Carlisle for her client who has horses with Chad Brown.”

I'm Very Busy, racing for Team Hanley, Richard Schermerhorn and Paul Braverman, made an immediate impact on the racetrack, graduating on debut at Saratoga going 1 1/16 miles on the lawn under Flavien Prat and earning the 'TDN Rising Star' nod.

“I happened to be there for the race after his when he won so impressively first time out,” Brok recalled. “I was in the paddock for the next race and Jose Ortiz is riding a horse for a friend of mine. Jose says, 'Oh, Glenn, congratulations on your horse running so well. We love that horse. We tried him on the dirt and he seemed to like the turf better.' I said, 'Jose you didn't even ride the horse and you know everything about him.' He said, 'We pay attention.' That was a real eye-opener.”

I'm Very Busy earned his spot in the Breeders' Cup with a runner-up effort in the GII Pilgrim S. last time out.

Ironically, the Broks are less busy these days after making the move to Kentucky.

“Right after COVID, it was difficult getting help. My wife was doing all the work and getting burned out,” Brok said of the decision to sell Diamond B. “I wasn't getting any younger and she wasn't going to get any healthier with me working her to death. It just seemed like a good time. The PA program was amazing to us. We were the leading breeders, we made a lot of money and we still have horses in the pipeline that are bringing us breeders awards–it's kind of like an annuity. You need to know when to hold them and when to fold them, so we did.”

The move to Kentucky brings the Broks closer to daughter Samantha, who runs Ron Wise's Four Pillars Farm, as well as Sarah and Carlos and their grandchildren.

“We bought a little place down here, 22 acres with an indoor for my wife to ride in,” Brok said. “I partner with Sarah and Carlos, who own and operate C & S Thoroughbreds, and our farms adjoin. It's just been a new page and a good one. We are enjoying living here in Kentucky. We have a lot of friends here and there are a tremendous amount of things to do in the horse community.”

Brok also remains in his position with Brook Ledge Horse Transportation and the move has given him more time to devote to his clients.

“I get to spend more time with my Brook Ledge clients then I did when I was living in Pennsylvania,” he said.

The move has also meant the Broks have the time to stop and enjoy the moment ahead of the Breeders' Cup.

“My wife was so inundated with work with the farm in Pennsylvania, she would never have been able to get away and enjoy this experience of having a Breeders' Cup horse,” Brok said. “Now I said to her, 'Hey we were invited to a party here and seats at the Breeders' Cup.' And she said, 'That's great, let's do it.'”

Diamond B was the leading breeder in Pennsylvania in 2017 and was ranked second in the state in 2018-2020. But what would a win in the Breeders' Cup mean to the longtime breeders?

“In our industry, is there anything other than the Derby that is bigger than those two days of racing and being a part of it?” Brok asked. “Nobody is flying under the radar here. When you have success and luck and you are the leading breeder or your horse wins a stakes, or your horse runs in the Breeders' Cup, people notice. And that's a good feeling. That's a feeling of accomplishment and acceptance.”

When it was pointed out that the partnership designed to take advantage of a state-bred program had produced a colt who made his first two starts in New York before heading to Kentucky for the Breeders' Cup, Brok laughed and said, “It has worked out in the past. This time, it's the good news and the bad news. He's a pretty nice horse and he's going to the Breeders' Cup. Which isn't in Pennsylvania.”

LEXINGTON, KY – The Fasig-Tipton October Yearlings Sale continued its pace to another record-setting renewal with a solid day of trade during its third session Wednesday in Lexington.

Through three sessions, 804 yearlings have grossed $41,540,500. Following three sessions a year ago, the gross was $39,511,600 before the auction concluded it fourth session with an all-time high aggregate of $52,607,500.

The average of $51,667 is up 11.9% from the same point of the 2021 auction and the median is up 19% to $25,000. Still well ahead of the record figures of $45,627 and $22,000, respectively, that were set at last year's sale.

“It was a continuation of the strong market that we saw in the first two days of the sale,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning Wednesday night. “There was wide-spread participation from buyers across the United States and around the world. Quality horses are in great demand. And we are fortunate to be in the midst of a strong and resilient marketplace.”

Legacy Ranch manager Terry Knight made the highest bid of Wednesday's session, going to $450,000 to acquire a filly by the late Arrogate. The session topper was one of 43 to sell for $200,000 or over during the three sessions, compared to 28 who reached that figure a year ago.

Looking ahead to the final session of the October sale, Browning said, “We anticipate some fireworks tomorrow and some strong highlights. We look forward to a successful conclusion of the October sale tomorrow.”

Thursday's final session of the auction begins at 10 a.m.

Wait Pays off For Legacy Ranch

Terry Knight of Legacy Ranch waited all day for a filly by Arrogate (hip 1152) to walk into the Fasig-Tipton October sales ring and as afternoon turned to evening, he would not be denied, ultimately going to $450,000 to acquire the yearling from the Mill Ridge Sales consignment.

“We just loved her,” Knight said. “We liked everything about her. She's the one we sat here and waited all day for. Fortunately, we got her.”

The filly was the second purchase of the week for Legacy Ranch, which acquired a daughter of Into Mischief (hip 226) for $190,000 during Monday's first session of the auction.

“We bought the Into Mischief on the first day and now we have this filly and I think we are done,” Knight said.

The yearling, bred by Robert Chasanoff's Gentry Stable, is out of stakes-winner Lemon Splendor (Lemon Drop Kid) and is a half-sister to stakes winner Mo Maverick (Uncle Mo).

“We've had a great privilege of raising horses for the Chasanoff family for a number of years,” said Mill Ridge's Price Bell. “Tom Bozarth works with the Chasanoff family and they picked this mare out a number of years ago when the market was down and they have bred her well and she's produced. It's a great reward for everyone involved.”

Bozarth's Arch Bloodstock signed for Lemon Splendor as a 4-year-old for $10,000 at the 2013 Keeneland January sale. Mo Maverick, the mare's first foal, sold for $200,000 at the 2015 Keeneland September sale. She also had yearlings sell for $375,000 in 2018 and $190,000 in 2019.

“I don't know that you can ever expect anything,” Bell said of the result. “I think what's most flattering is that there were a lot of really good judges who really liked her. That's a credit to her because she came in and she showed herself well, she took it all in and she showed a ton of class. It was a most rewarding moment for the whole team at Mill Ridge. We all wake up at all hours of the night to take care of the horses and when they come and perform like that, we are just so excited and appreciative.”

Into Mischief Filly to White Birch

A filly by Into Mischief (hip 991) attracted a host of bidders before ultimately selling for $400,000 to White Birch Farm. BSW/Crow Bloodstock's Jake Memolo signed the ticket on behalf of Peter Brant's operation.

The yearling is the first foal out of stakes-placed Hayworth (Arch) and from the family of Grade I winner Critical Eye and Takeover Target. She was bred by Richard Roberts's Brinker Hill Farm and was consigned by Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck's Summerfield.

“Obviously, she's a very nice filly, very athletic,” said Francis Vanlangendonck. “And she's by the right sire. The mare could really run. Her race record got cut short with an injury and this is a really nice filly.”

Hayworth, bred and campaigned by Brinker Hill Farm, was third in the 2018 Purple Violet S. in her six-race career. Summerfield purchased her graded stakes-placed dam Glamorista (Unbridled's Song) for $200,000 at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton November sale.

Liam's Map Colt Makes Up for Lost Time

A mishap forced a colt by Liam's Map out of Book 1 of the Keeneland September sale last month, but the yearling was rerouted to the Fasig-Tipton October sale and attracted a bevy of admirers before selling to the $350,000 bid of bloodstock agent David Ingordo Wednesday in Lexington.

The yearling was bred by Brereton Jones and was consigned by Airdrie Stud. He is out of Listen to Libby (Indian Charlie) and is a half-brother to graded winner Chanteline (Majesticperfection).

“He's a colt who has been beautiful from the start,” said Bret Jones. “It's a family that's been good to us by a stallion who was certainly brilliant and could get you a brilliant horse. We had some bad luck with him right before the Keeneland September sale. He was entered in Book 1 and, just by a freak occurrence, got loose and hurt himself a little bit. But he lived to tell the tale and came here a healthy and happy horse and really delivered for us. We couldn't be happier. He was bought by a group that has weekend in front of them and I think they just had a special night here because they bought a real good colt.”

Of having to reroute the yearling to the October sale, Jones said, “This is a great horse sale. And we have all seen how many great horses come out of here. It would be tough to convince me otherwise that we didn't just see one there.”

Zito on the Board with War Front Colt

Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito got in on the action at the Fasig-Tipton October sale, going to $150,000 to acquire a colt by War Front (hip 817) on behalf of Robert LaPenta. LaPenta and Zito have enjoyed plenty of success over the years, with the likes of champion War Pass and Grade I winners Dialed In and Ice Box, as well as longshot GI Belmont S. winner Da'Tara.

“I like Toby Keith,” Zito said. “I've had horses for him and I am friends with him. The song of his that I like the best the last few years, he sings, 'I ain't as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was.' And all trainers, Charlie Whittingham, Allen Jerkens, they all went through slumps. Right now I don't have the horses I used to have, everyone knows that. Bob sent me a couple of horses this spring, which was nice. Unfortunately, one was claimed. And he told me to pick one out for him here.”

LaPenta at first was surprised Zito picked a yearling by traditional turf sire, War Front. But the trainer pointed out the yearling's first two dams are by Scat Daddy and Fusaichi Pegasus.

“Bob said, 'What do you want with a War Front? You're not a turf trainer,” Zito said. “But if you look at Scat Daddy, you know what he did with Justify, you look at Fusiachi Pegasus, he won the Kentucky Derby. So the War Front might be turf, but with the rest, you have a chance to run on the dirt.”

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hanshin and Nakayama Racecourses. Sunday's Boxing Day program at Nakayama features the world's biggest betting race annually, the G1 Arima Kinen, in which Chrono Genesis (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}) will look close her career on a winning note in defense of her title:

4th-NKY, ¥9,680,000 ($85k), Maiden, 2yo, 1800m
DREAM AGENDA (f, 2, Curlin–Gender Agenda {GB}, by Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) was sent off the 8-5 favorite for her Sept. 18 bow over a sloppy local course and distance and gave a strong account of herself with a runner-up effort. A $200K buyback at Keeneland September last fall, the bay is the first foal from her Grade III-winning dam, herself a half-sister to the dam of champion and G1SW Pretty Pollyanna (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). The third dam includes European Horse of the Year User Friendly (GB) (Slip Anchor {GB}). Gender Agenda was sold on for $55K in foal to More Than Ready at KEENOV last month. B-Profoal Partners 7 LLC (KY)

7th-NKY, ¥13,830,000 ($121k), Allowance, 2yo, 1200m
FREUD SENSE (c, 2, Street Sense–Fenwick Hall, by Freud) made light work of his debut assignment Dec. 5, easily accounting for a field of newcomers over this track and trip by five lengths as the 9-10 chalk (see below, SC 7) and figures tough right back. A $110K KEESEP RNA last year, the New York-bred, produced by a stakes-placed full-sister to MSW Miss Narcissist, fetched $160K at this year's OBS March Sale. B-Final Furlong Racing Stable (NY)

9th-HSN, ¥19,110,000 ($167k), Allowance, 2yo, 1400mT
SEA VIXEN (f, 2, Into Mischief–Sly Warrior, by First Samurai) placed twice from three starts on the turf to begin her career, but most recently switched to the dirt and galloped to a seven-length graduation at Tokyo Nov. 28 (see below, SC 2). That success notwithstanding, the $130K KEESEP yearling turned $500K OBSMAR breezer gets back on the grass this weekend. In addition to the ability she has already demonstrated, she has some pedigree for it, as her is a half-sister to SP Pull Dancer (Alywow), whose son Good Samaritan (Harlan's Holiday) was a two-time graded winner on dirt, but also took the GII Summer S. on the turf. B-Breeze Easy LLC (KY)

4th-HSN, ¥13,400,000 ($117k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800m
GONE QUEST (c, 2, Quality Road–Gone Callin, by Proud Citizen) is out of an unraced half-sister to champion Caledonia Road (Quality Road), who was purchased by Nathan McCauley for $55K at KEEJAN in 2018. Put in foal to the Lane's End star, Gone Callin was reoffered at KEENOV that fall, hammering for $280K. The mare's first foal, Gone Quest was RNA'd for $225K at KEESEP last fall and again for $145K at FTKOCT. Caledonia Road, whose half-brother Officiating (Blame) recently took out the GIII Mr. Prospector S., also resides in Japan, where her filly foal by Justify fetched $1.22m at this year's JRHA Select Sale. B-Chiyoda Farm (KY)
