He was getting a weight pull from the top horse [Auto Bahn] but he'd had a run and we hadn't.” After selling twice as a yearling, the chestnut was offered by Top Line Sales at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale and caught the eye of trainer Bhupat Seemar after breezing an eight of a mile in :10 3/5.

TIMONIUM, MD – The opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale got off to a tepid start at the Maryland State Fairgrounds Monday morning, but momentum built throughout a session which ultimately produced figures ahead of the auction's record-setting 2022 renewal.

“It was a strong start to the sale,” Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. said at the close of business Monday. “There was significant increase in average price compared to the first day and the overall sale last year. It was certainly an acceptable RNA rate. The median increased 20% from the first day last year and a little more than that overall.”

During Monday's session, 161 horses sold for $16,975,000. The average was $105,435–up 15.1% from last year's opening session and up 10.5% from the 2022 record-setting overall average of $95,391. The session median was $60,000, up 20% from the opening session figure a year ago.

From 300 catalogued lots, 215 horses went through the ring Monday. With 54 horses reported not sold, the buy-back rate was 25.1%. It was 25.5% last year.

“It's an interesting marketplace,” Browning said. “There is dramatic competition on the 'more expensive' horses in a sale of this nature. You can see the pavilion fill up when a horse is going to bring a couple of $100,000 or more. You see the people come in and you know they are going to bid, and they are going to bid, and they are going to bid. But when a horse is going to bring $25,000, you can see the auction team working their tails off to try to get bidders on those type of horses. So it's an interesting marketplace. It's very, very healthy at the upper end–it's the same trend that we've seen at the other 2-year-old sales this year. We saw it to a lesser extent at the yearling sales last year, with the competition really focused on the upper end. So it's healthy, but it's not euphoric.”

A filly by Mendelssohn brought the session's top price when selling for $800,000 to Speedway Stables. Consigned by Paul Sharp, the session topper was one of 23 to sell for $200,000 or more. Nineteen juveniles hit that mark during last year's opening session.

The Midlantic sale concludes Tuesday with a session beginning at 11 a.m.

Speedway Strikes for Mendelssohn Filly
Speedway Stables' Peter Fluor went to a session-topping $800,000 to acquire a filly by Mendelssohn (hip 245) during Monday's first session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale. The gray filly, who was consigned by Paul Sharp, worked a furlong in :10 1/5 during Wednesday's second session of the under-tack show last week.

“We thought she was a great physical,” Fluor said of the filly. “We loved her breeze, as everybody else did. She is just a standout. Mendelssohn is on the move, but she just looked like a tremendous athlete to us.”

The juvenile is out of stakes-placed Lady Hansen (Hansen).

“We loved the filly before I even got here for the Preakness,” Fluor said. “[Bloodstock agent] Marette [Farrell] had seen her and had seen her breeze. We just thought she had a huge amount of potential. And we loved her demeanor.”

Sharp, along with pinhooking partner Liz Crow, purchased the filly for $125,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“I really liked her and she carried herself well,” Sharp said of the filly's appeal last fall. “She looked like the type of horse that would do well at a 2-year-old in training sale.”

Of her progression through the winter, Sharp said, “She just did everything we could have asked for. She was one of my favorite fillies that we had on the farm all year. She's just done everything right.”

Hip 245 was the second purchase of the afternoon for Fluor and K.C. Weiner's operation, which went to $500,000 to acquire a colt by Not This Time (hip 198) from the Pick View consignment.

“He had a nice breeze (:10 3/5), not an incredible breeze, but a great physical and his mind is in the right place,” Fluor said. “We liked the way he handled it. He's a young horse–I think he's a May foal–so we will give him a little time and maybe shoot for maybe September, October for the races.”

Both juveniles will be trained by Bob Baffert.

Fluor admitted Speedway has been targeting fillies who might join the operation's fledgling broodmare band after their racing careers.

“We are predominately looking for fillies, but we look at other horses too. That's why we bought the Not This Time colt,” Fluor said.

While still in its early stages, the Speedway breeding operation enjoyed sales ring success with its first crop of yearlings last summer when selling a daughter of Tapit (hip 72) for $750,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale.

“We kind of backed into the breeding,” Fluor said with a laugh Monday. “When we retired some fillies, K. C. Weiner, my partner at Speedway, asked what we would do with this filly. We said, 'Well, we can sell her or we could breed her.' He said he'd do whatever I wanted to do, and I said I don't care, we can do whatever you want to do. We never made a decision, so we bred her. That's how we got into the breeding business.”

Awesome Slew Colt Lights Up Midlantic
A colt by Awesome Slew (hip 91), who became the first of the under-tack show to work a furlong in the co-bullet :10 flat last week, caused the first fireworks of the opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale when selling for $700,000 to the partnership of WinStar Farm's Maverick Racing, Siena Farm and CMNWLTH.

“We just loved him,” said WinStar's Elliott Walden. “We thought he was the best horse in the sale. We loved his breeze. We are happy to get him, but it was a lot. We thought like he would be in that $500,000 to $700,000 range, so he was in the top end of that range.”

Following his bullet breeze, the colt did have trouble navigating the turn on the Timonium oval last Tuesday.

“He was going so fast, he didn't make the turn,” Walden said. “So it's a good and a bad thing. But he just seemed like a really nice colt.”

The Commonwealth partnership pioneered by Chase Chamberlin and Brian Doxator has already famously enjoyed success with graduates of the Midlantic sale. They partnered up on 2022 graduate and now GI Kentucky Derby winner Mage (Good Magic).

Hip 91 is out of Cash Reserve (Distorted Humor) and is a half-brother to stakes-placed Reckling (Dialed In) and Campy Cash (Race Day). He was consigned by Tom McCrocklin, who purchased him for $150,000 on behalf of Michael Sucher's Champion Equine at last year's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's October Yearling Sale.

“I literally recall telling Michael Sucher that I thought he was the best horse in the [OBS] sale,” McCrocklin said following the colt's work last week.

The colt's yearling price tag made him the most expensive yearling by Awesome Slew to sell last year. He is now well on his way to being the stallion's most expensive 2-year-old of 2023. Awesome Slew stands at Ocala Stud for $4,000. His first crop of 2-year-olds were led in the sales ring last year by a colt who sold for $400,000 to Klaravich Stable at OBS March.

Sucher's multiple pinhooking successes with McCrocklin this spring are led by a son of Arrogate who sold for $1.050 million and a filly by Munnings who sold for $1 million, both at the OBS March sale. At the same sale, McCrocklin sold a daughter of Arrogate, purchased on behalf of Sucher for $250,000 at the Keeneland September sale, for $950,000.

Uncle Mo Filly to LNJ Foxwoods, NK Racing
A filly by Uncle Mo (hip 186), who turned in a flashy :10 1/5 work last week, delivered in the sales ring Monday in Timonium when selling for $625,000 to the bid of bloodstock agent Alex Solis. Solis was bidding on behalf of a partnership of the Roth family's LNJ Foxwoods and Nancy Favreau and Kathy Psoinos's NK Racing.

“She's a beautiful Uncle Mo filly with a big pedigree, out of a Blame mare,” said Solis. “So for us it made sense from a pedigree perspective and her breeze was phenomenal. I think I gave out three stars for the whole breeze show and she was one of them.”

The filly will be trained by Brad Cox, who trained champion Covfefe (Into Mischief) for LNJ Foxwoods.

The bay filly is out of Gabriellestoblame (Blame), a half-sister to GI Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist (Uncle Mo). She was consigned by Pick View, as agent for her breeder, Bridlewood Farm.

Tapit Colt to Young
A colt by Tapit (hip 250) will be joining the barn of trainer Todd Pletcher after bloodstock agent Steve Young purchased him for $600,000 on behalf of an undisclosed client. Consigned by Julie Davies and bred by Gainesway, the juvenile is out of Lady Pewitt (Orientate) and is a half-brother to champion Jaywalk (Cross Traffic) and to multiple stakes winner Danzatrice (Dunkirk), the dam of this year's GI Toyota Blue Grass S. winner Tapit Trice (Tapit).

“He is arguably the best bred horse in the sale,” Young said. “He has a lot of similarities to some of the good Tapits that I have bought. I think he has a sire's pedigree. He trained great. It was a challenging track and a challenging week for people buying and selling and he was the one we wanted.”

Young compared the colt to Anchor Down, another son of Tapit out of an Orientate mare, whom he purchased for $250,000 at the 2012 Keeneland September sale. Anchor Down was a multiple graded stakes winner for Alto Racing.

“Anchor Down was a terrific horse, maybe not the luckiest horse who ever lived, but a Grade II winner nonetheless,” Young said. “[Hip 250]'s got subtle things that make you like him even more every time you look at him.”

Looking ahead for the colt, Young said, “He was a popular horse here. He had a lot of shows. He's going to get a chance to catch his breath and then he will go to Todd Pletcher.”

Not This Time Colt Pays for Pick View
Just a few hips after selling a filly by Uncle Mo for $625,000 on behalf of Bridlewood Farm, Joe Pickerell's Pick View hit a pinhooking home run when Speedway Stables purchased a colt by Not This Time (hip 198) for $500,000. Pick View had purchased the gray for $260,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“That's a step up for us, that's getting us out of our comfort zone a little bit,” Pickerell said of the colt's yearling price tag. “But when you find one that looks like him with that pedigree, you just go for it. Fortunately there are some amazing partners on this horse that are very close friends and family.”

The colt is out of the unraced Goodness Unbridled (Unbridled's Song) and is a half-brother to stakes-placed Chart Topper (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}).

His trip to the sales ring was not without a little hiccup, following a furlong work in :10 3/5 last week.

“That was not the best day of his life,” Pickerell said of the work. “The best thing about it was that we've been doing it long enough that we have some people who trust our word, people who saw him at the farm and saw him progress through the winter. And we all knew there was a lot better in him. He's a young 2-year-old, they are allowed to have a bad day, but one bad day does not negate from September to now. We always said if we can get him on the shank in front of people, they are going to fall in love.”

The colt went through the ring shortly after Pick View sent out Bridlewood Farm's homebred Uncle Mo filly to sell for $625,000.

“Bridlewood raised her and they did a great job and then George Isaacs was gracious enough to let me take her for the training part,” Pickerell said. “She's an Uncle Mo, who needs no introduction, and then that female pedigree is probably one of the better pedigrees in the sale. When they work like she did, it's just who is going to be the last one standing. She's one that, you want not only on the racetrack, but if you're racing fillies and breeding, that's the kind of filly you want for the long term. So not only is she going to be a phenomenal racehorse, but we really look forward to her down the road as a broodmare.”

Also Monday afternoon, Pick View offered a filly by Tapit (hip 156) who sold for $250,000 to Charlie Allen. The bay, who is out of multiple stakes winner Enchanted Ghost (Ghostzapper), was purchased by Hoby and Layna Kight for $150,000 at the Keeneland September sale. She worked in :10 1/5 before selling to Remount Thoroughbreds for $200,000 at the OBS March sale. “We sold her for a client who bought her in March,” Pickerell said. “It's a little different group [that bought her in March].”

The filly worked in :10 2/5 last week in Timonium.

“She's another filly with a bright future,” Pickerell said. “She's just a tiny little bit of vet work away from them paying $1 million for her. She's by Tapit, a beautiful filly, she breezed at two 2-year-old sales sound. We just need these buyers to have a little more confidence in horsemanship and a little less confidence is some of these new state-of-the-art diagnostics.”

Omaha Beach Colt Heads West
A colt from the first crop of Omaha Beach (hip 93) will be heading to Southern California after trainer Mark Glatt signed the ticket at $425,000 to secure the juvenile on behalf of an undisclosed client Monday in Timonium.

“He's a beautiful horse who worked well,” Glatt said. “The Omaha Beaches have presented themselves well. He had a strong bottom side and he looked like an athletic horse. He just looked like a horse you could right on with. We are really pleased to get him.”

The colt, who was bred by Castleton Lyons and Kilboy Estate, is out of multiple stakes winner Catch My Fancy (Yes It's True) and is a half-brother to stakes winners Dubini (Gio Ponti) and What a Catch (Justin Phillip), as well as to Catch the Moon (Malibu Moon), who produced Grade I winner Girvin (Tale of Ekati) and graded winner and multiple Grade I-placed Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow).

Consigned by Wavertree Stables, the chestnut worked a furlong last week in :10 2/5.

Ramiro Restrepo has done a little bit of everything in the racing industry and now he has something else to add to his resume, GI Kentucky Derby winning owner. Restrepo is one of the owners of Mage (Good Magic), the winner of the 149th Derby. To share his thoughts on the race and what it meant to him, Restrepo joined this week's TDN Writers' Room podcast, presented by Keeneland. He was this week's Green Group Guest of the Week.

“I still can't sleep,” said an emotional Restrepo. “I keep watching the race. I can't believe that we won. We won it. It's incredible. The emotion is totally raw. I haven't really been able to put it behind me. I'm still just soaking it up.”

Restrepo has been there from the start. Along with Gustavo Delgado, Jr, the assistant to his father, Gustavo Delgado, Sr., he picked Mage out at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale 2022, where he was purchased for $290,000. (He sold the prior year as a yearling at Keeneland September for $235,000). From there he was sent to the Delgado barn and made the quick transition from being a first-time-starter on Jan. 28 at Gulfstream to the Kentucky Derby winner.

“We knew we had a talented colt,” Restrepo said. “He had shown flashes of being really fast. But I didn't know anything back in January. And anyone who ever says I knew I was buying a Derby winner when it happened is just doing it for pomp and circumstance. In reality, you always try to buy just a nice horse, whether that means a champion sprinter or a monster turf horse or whatever. You're over the moon with that. But what happened with this horse, it is just like a Hollywood ending.”

The GI Preakness will be next and for Mage, it may only be a matter of holding his form from the Derby. But for a horse who is coming back in two weeks and had only three races to prepare him for the Derby, will that happen?

“That's what makes this such a hard series to compete in,” he said. “And that's what adds to the special mystical flair of the two-week turnaround and of the Triple Crown. You have to deal with the cards that are in front of you. The horse was never really pushed to get ready for his maiden. So it's not like he ran 20 races in the morning. The races are making him, and he is evolving physically and mentally. We keep waiting, much like everybody else, for signs that the races have gotten to him physically or mentally. He's flesh and blood and at some point it's just the natural way of the animal, those things catch up to them. No one can answer that question, but the horse at the moment came out of the race as good as one could ever ask for. What you have to do is ride the wave and see how long you can ride it.” .

Elsewhere on the podcast, which is also sponsored by Coolmore,https://lanesend.com/ the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association, Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders, 1/st Racing, WinStar Farm, XBTV, Lane's End and https://www.threechimneys.com/ West Point Thoroughbreds, podcast regulars Zoe Cadman, Randy Moss and Bill Finley dealt with the unpleasant aspects of this year's Derby. Seven horses died in the lead up to the race, including two on Derby day. There was an agreement that it was a very difficult couple of days for the sport and that the message sent out by the mainstream press shed racing in a very bad light. Did we have all the answers? Not really. It doesn't seem that anyone does.

Fasig-Tipton will not be holding a select 2-year-olds in training sale at Gulfstream Park in 2023. The news was first reported by the Blood-Horse.

“The Gulfstream Park facilities are not available for 2023 due to some stabling issues,” said Fasig-Tipton's President and CEO Boyd Browning.

“The stalls are not available this year. We learned about this in the fall, and we determined this year that the best approach would be to concentrate our efforts on the Midlantic Sale, which last year produced the highest price of a 2-year-old in training,” said Browning, referring to Hejazi (Bernardini), who brought $3.55 million at Timonium this past May, and who has gone on to be a graded stakes performer at two for trainer Bob Baffert.

“The sale also has an amazing record of Grade I success of graduates on the racetrack over the last five years. We are strong advocates and believers of the importance of buyers having the opportunity to watch horses breeze on a dirt racetrack, and have a great deal of confidence in the Timonium sales venue.”

Browning said that it was too early to say if the sale would return to Gulfstream in future years. The 2023 Timonium Sale will be held from May 22-23. There will also be an additional one-day juvenile sale for the first time in Timonium June 28.

A total of 35 juveniles brought $13.155 million (17 RNAs), led by a $1.2-million Bold d'Oro filly, at the 2022 Gulfstream Sale. At the 2021 renewal, 67 head brought $25.36 million (38 RNAs), including $1.7-million graduate and MGISW Taiba (Gun Runner).

“I don't think it's a surprise to anybody,” said Niall Brennan, who consigned 2015 Fasig-Tipton Florida sale graduate and subsequent GI Kentucky Derby and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Nyquist (Uncle Mo).

“The reality is they have struggled with that sale for the last few years and especially this year. You can look at the numbers yourself–the number of horses that were catalogued versus the number of horses that went to the breeze show and the amount of horses that actually went through the ring after the breeze show. And the last couple of years, it's been significant. It's very hard to have a select sale that way.”

He continued, “It doesn't impact the landscape at all in my opinion. Most consignors that are around here [in Ocala], it's so much easier for us to sell at OBS in March, April and even June. Because it's right here. We don't have to leave home. It's very expensive to go to Miami and that's not Fasig's fault.

“The South Florida Sale for years was a big thing. But the reality is times change. Their response was to put on two sales in Maryland. Time will tell if it's a good move. They've been oversubscribed to their May sale for a few years now.”

Leading consignor Eddie Woods concluded, “It's a shame that sale had to go. It was a great marketplace for many years. But it just proved tougher and tougher to sell there. All you could sell was the cream of the crop. OBS has become king in the 2-year-old market worldwide. So, we'll just go there. You hear some negatives about the synthetic track, but the good judges can pick the good horses out of there and pay a lot of money for them, too.”

TIMONIUM, MD – With a $3.55-million son of Bernardini providing the auction's biggest fireworks, the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale concluded another record-setting renewal in Timonium Tuesday.

At the conclusion of business, 391 horses had sold for a gross of $37,297,700–bettering the sale's previous high mark of $33,692,000 set just last year. The average of $95,391 was another record, bettering the mark of $94,375 set last year. The median dipped to $47,000, just 6% off the 2020 record of $50,000.

“Last year was such a wow year and, when I come to the next year, I always ask, can we exceed what we did last year,” said Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sales Director Paget Bennett. “And we certainly blew it out of the park. Next year could be tough. We are tickled to death with records for average and gross and record price for a horse sold in Maryland.”

The median was the auction's only statistic to fail to surpass its 2021 high-water mark.

“The middle market was a little tough,” Bennett admitted. “People were commenting that they couldn't sell a horse for $40,000 or $50,000, but they were selling them for $20,000. And then they were selling for $100,000 or $200,000. That was a surprise and some people asked where were the Maryland trainers. I guess they felt some were missing.”

Some buyers stepped in to take advantage of the softer middle market. David Meah of Meah/Lloyd Bloodstock was pleased with the six horses he is taking home from Timonium.

“I found a lot of very nice horses here,” Meah said. “It's a great sale. I think the market has leveled out a little bit, so it's a bit easier to buy, which is great for me personally. We managed to buy six so far, so we've been very happy with the market and what was on offer here.”

Meah continued, “It's been extremely hard to buy for the last 12, even 18 months, but I think it's just diluted a little bit now, come May. I found it a lot easier to buy horses this week.”

Raul Reyes's Kings Equine sold 25 of 33 horses through the ring this week and enjoyed a number of pinhooking scores.

“I think the market was great,” Reyes said.

Of a potentially soft middle market, he added, “It's been that way ever since I can remember.”

With an eye-catching :9 4/5 bullet breeze, hip 385 was no secret when he entered the sales ring Tuesday and when the dust had settled after a bidding duel between West Point Thoroughbreds and Gary Young, Young had secured the youngster for Amr Zedan for a sale record $3.55 million. The colt was the most expensive Thoroughbred ever sold at public auction in the state of Maryland, bettering the previous record of $1.8 million set by Gamine at the Midlantic auction in 2019. It was the eighth straight year that the Midlantic sale had produced a seven-figure juvenile.

“It just goes to show people can feel confident about bringing that type of horse to the marketplace here in Maryland,” Bennett said of the record colt. “My goal has always been to have two seven-figure horses, but I will take a $3.55 million one. I hope we get him on the cover one day.”

Bernardini Smashes Records in Timonium

A colt by Bernardini (hip 385), who advertised himself with a :9 4/5 work last week, ignited a bidding duel between West Point Thoroughbreds and bloodstock agent Gary Young in the Midlantic sale ring Tuesday. Young, doing his bidding out back while standing alongside advisor Charlie Boden and trainer Bob Baffert and on the phone with Saudi businessman Amr Zedan, answered every bid from the West Point team doing its bidding at the back of the pavilion to ultimately secure the colt for a sales-record $3.55 million.

“Obviously we thought he was a standout and other people did as well,” Young said. “Mr. Zedan was on the phone with me. Originally, we were going to go to $2.5 million, but he just kept answering. He said, 'Up to $2.5 million, it's yours. After that, you've got to have me on the phone.' I kept asking and he kept answering.”

The juvenile was consigned by Becky Thomas's Sequel Bloodstock on behalf of his breeders Chester and Mary Broman. He is out of G Note (Medaglia d'Oro), a daughter of graded winner Seeking the Ante (Seeking the Gold) and half to stakes winner Mineralogist (Mineshaft), as well as to the dam of this year's GII Rebel S. winner Un Ojo (Laoban).

“He did everything,” Young said. “He went :9 4/5 and in the videos, sometimes horses when they straighten up the backstretch they are pretty well spent, but he just kept firing up the backstretch. His third furlong was super.”

On behalf of Zedan, Young purchased a son of Uncle Mo (hip 206) for $2.3 million and a colt by Justify (hip 11) for $600,000 at the OBS Spring sale last month. At the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream, Zedan purchased a colt by Nyquist (hip 62) for $700,000.

All four purchases reflect Zedan's desire to get back to the GI Kentucky Derby, where he was represented last year by the ill-fated Medina Spirit (Protonico).

“You don't think of Bernardinis as :9 4/5 horses, as much as he's been a good sire for a long time, you think of horses that run longer,” Young said. “And that's what Mr. Zedan wants. He has Derby fever. That's his main focus. We will know in about five or six months how this turns out.”

Young said Tuesday's acquisition would likely conclude Zedan's 2-year-old purchases this year.

Hip 385 is the most expensive Thoroughbred sold at public auction in the state of Maryland, surpassing the $1.8 million set by Gamine at this sale in 2019. It was the eighth consecutive year that a horse selling at the Midlantic 2-year-old sale sold for seven figures.

Longtime New York breeders, the Bromans began selling select offerings as part of an estate planning program four years ago. The planning got a jump start with the $2-million Chestertown (Tapit), who topped the 2019 OBS March sale and is campaigned by a partnership that includes West Point Thoroughbreds and the Bromans themselves. Chestertown's half-brother by Into Mischief sold for $1 million at this year's March sale.

“It's huge,” Sequel's Carlos Manresa said of Tuesday's record-setting result. “It just goes to show how much the Bromans can be rewarded for the time that they have put into breeding these mares and keeping these families. It's especially wonderful to have Mr. Broman here for the sale. Whenever we feel like we have something that we think is really going to be exciting, he likes to be here for it. This was certainly an event that called for him to be here.”

Describing the colt's progression, Manresa said, “He's always been really calm around the barn. He is really well behaved and really well mannered. He gallops so calmly, but when we asked him to go fast, he went really fast.”

The colt became the first horse in a decade to shade :10 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds when he worked during last week's under-tack show.

“We knew he would go fast, we just didn't know he'd go quite that fast,” Manresa admitted. “We never expected a :9 4/5, but we were very pleased that he gave it to us.”

Manresa said the result was gratifying for the entire Sequel team.

“Any time you can be part of a horse that brings seven figures, it's really special,” he said. “Not just for me, but for everyone at the farm. Everyone is watching from home and they are all texting me and congratulating us, from the grooms, to the guy who does our track, to the blacksmith that does his feet every month. It's a wonderful team.”

Patience Pays for Kinder

Breeders Ralph Kinder and Erv Woolsey had no hesitation when taking home their American Pharoah filly (hip 443) after she RNA'd for $145,000 at the OBS March sale following a :10 1/5 work over the synthetic surface in Ocala. Rerouted to Maryland, the filly worked a furlong in a bullet :10 flat over the dirt last week and rewarded the partners' decision when selling for $500,000 to trainer Cherie DeVaux.

“She did not like the surface down there, she didn't relax over the surface,” Kinder said of the OBS work. “She's a better horse on the dirt. She galloped out great here and her video was off the chart.”

The filly is out of Jordan's Henny (Henny Hughes), who won the 2018 GIII Hurricane Bertie S. and placed in four additional graded races for Woolsey and Kinder, and is a third generation product of their breeding program.

“We raised her and still have her granddam–all three generations–that's the third generation,” Kinder said. “We were a little hesitant to sell her because we race as well.”

Asked why the partners had decided to sell the filly, Kinder laughed and said, “Economics.”

Another Filly for Black Type Team

The Black Type Thoroughbreds partnership has already had success buying gray fillies from Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables consignment and went back to that formula when purchasing a daughter of Malibu Moon (hip 487) for $500,000 Tuesday in Timonium. The group, founded by Jake Ballis, purchased Grade I placed Up in Smoke (The Big Beast) for $230,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale.

“We love fillies,” Black Type's Maddie Mattmiller said after signing the ticket on the filly alongside Ballis and television personality Jonathon Kinchen, a newcomer to the partnership. “We have had good luck with gray fillies off of Ciaran Dunne. He has always given us good advice when we've found one we like over there.”

Hip 487 is out of Lorelei True (Unbridled's Song), a half-sister to graded winner Sparky Ville (Candy Ride {Arg}). The juvenile's third dam is Win Crafty Lady (Crafty Prospector), who produced Harmony Lodge, Graeme Hall and Win McCool.

“She was a big filly with a ton of leg under her,” Mattmiller said of the filly's appeal. “She looks like she can go two turns. She carried herself well and she has good pedigree behind her, out of an Unbridled's Song mare.”

The Lehigh Bloodstock pinhooking partnership that includes Dunne and Kirk Wycoff purchased the filly for $110,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

A newcomer to the Black Type partnership, Kinchen also teamed up with Ballis and Mattmiller to purchase a colt by Mosler (hip 454) for $165,000 earlier in the session.

“I've known Maddie and Jake for a long time, so when I decided to do this, I was obviously going to do it with their guidance,” Kinchen said. “We are excited about it. [Hip 487] will go to New York and likely be with George Weaver. We can keep an eye on her all summer while we are up in Saratoga. It should be a lot of fun.”

Mattmiller added, “We love Jonathon's support. We are excited to have him in the Black Type team. We have a good group of guys, so Jonathon only adds to that excitement.”

Reyes Scores With Bolt d'Oro Colt

Raul Reyes of Kings Equine cashed in on the popularity of first-crop sire Bolt d'Oro Tuesday in Timonium when selling a colt by the Spendthrift stallion (hip 364) for $500,000 to Holly and David Wilson. Reyes purchased the youngster for $40,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“He looked really nice, very strong and very handsome,” Reyes said of his initial impressions of the colt. “I got lucky. He was late on a day in the sale and I had a chance to buy him right. He kept developing the right way. He got bigger and he never went the other way.”

Out of Australian stakes winner Forever Discreet (Aus), the dark bay colt worked a furlong in a bullet :10 flat during last week's under-tack show.

“Every year, I try something different,” Reyes said of his approach to the Maryland sale. “You don't always hit it. I brought the Bolt d'Oro, a first-year sire, and he did great. You never know what horse is going to work out. Just when you think you've got it, it goes different.”

Eight juveniles by Bolt d'Oro sold at the two-day auction for an average of $309,625, topped by a $675,000 colt sold by Pike Racing to Spendthrift Farm and Frank Fletcher Racing during Monday's first session.

Meanwhile, $1.5-million Fasig-Tipton grad Vincoe (Quality Road), sent off at 7-2, tried to make a grab for the lead along the inside but had the door slammed in his face, and soon found himself in last, about six lengths off the front. Edging in front of Vintage Vinyl midway on the turn and drifting out four paths wide turning for home, Ferociously kept up the tempo through the stretch, reporting home a two-length winner. Despite his early problems, Vincoe offered the best turn of foot late, grabbing the place spot from Vintage Vinyl, 2 3/4 lengths from the winner. Brinkley, a half-sister to GSW and Grade 1/Group 1 placed Bound for Nowhere (The Factor), produced a colt by West Coast last season and was bred back to Hard Spun. This is the family of champion sprinter Midnight Lute. Sales history: $410,000 Ylg '20 KEESEP.
