Monday's session will begin at 3:00 p.m. ET and features a catalogue of 124 head. The remainder of the 412-horse catalogue will be offered on Tuesday beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Last year's catalogue was somewhat larger at 526, grossing $10,266,400 at an average of $26,597 (down 10.1% from $29,578 in 2021) and median of $15,000 (down 25% year-over-year from $20,000). The 2022 buyback rate was a relatively low 17% and in line with what it was 12 months earlier.

“Everyone has choices as to where they want to market their yearlings, so that certainly plays into it,” Fasig's Midlantic Sales Director Paget Bennett said when asked about the smaller catalogue. “We do have a supplement of 20 horses. I think a lot of horses got sold as weanlings and a lot of the end users bought weanlings to race.”

She continued, “A lot of the programs [are strong]–Virginia has become really popular–and some people probably have some uncertainties with the market. If they know that the market is very strong at the top, some might feel that they aren't in that top percentile, and they have the ability to take them to the races, a lot of them are choosing to do that instead.”

The 2022 sale topper was a $320,000 Maryland-bred Uncle Mo filly (hip 158) purchased by Legion Bloodstock, agent from the consignment of Scott Mallory, agent for Matt Dorman's Determined Stud. The same buyers and sellers were also responsible for one of the co-second-toppers at $200,000.

Maryland and Pennsylvania-breds by popular Kentucky stallions dominated the top of the market last year, and this year's catalogue features plenty of sire power as well, with the likes of highly coveted established sires such as Good Magic, Gun Runner, Munnings, Nyquist and Twirling Candy represented; youngsters by each of the top seven 2023 freshman sires on offer; and yearlings from the first crops of many of the most popular first-season stallions, including one by that group's decided standout, Authentic, available.

“We have a lot of popular sires that people are looking for to either take to the races or pinhook,” Bennett said. “I think we have the sires, and from what I'm hearing from a lot of people, we have good physicals. Some people have said, 'This is a stronger consignment for me this year than it was last year,' and last year they had a good, strong consignment. So, we're hopeful that buyers will perceive these offerings the same way and, hopefully, come Monday and Tuesday, we'll have some good competition.”

Bennett also noted that there have been plenty of significant updates to the catalogue.

The seemingly ever-present phenomenon of market polarization will presumably remain relevant in Maryland, but Bennett notes that one strength of the Midlantic market is its diversity

“I don't think there's going to be anything different this year than from years past,” she said. “We're just fortunate that our marketplace can feed to so many different racing jurisdictions and avenues. We have lots of people who come to buy horses to pinhook to the 2-year-old sales next year–a lot come to Maryland to bring horses back to the May sale, which has been very popular and works well–and they've had a lot of successes that way. We also have horses who might work better for folks who run in the different [nearby] areas, be it Pennsylvania, New York; smaller outfits taking shots. Some of the horses might not be in some peoples' minds as commercially appealing, but that's not to say those horses can't run as well as a high-dollar one. You just really never know what's going to happen.”

With past sale graduates like 2022 GI Spinaway S. winner and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies runner-up Leave No Trace (Outwork), purchased the prior year for just $40,000, there figure to be plenty of buyers from throughout the Midlantic region and beyond taking their shots Monday and Tuesday.

For the second day in a row, the session topper was a colt (Hip 415) from the first crop of Breeders' Cup champion Mendelssohn. Scanlon Training and Sales purchased the chestnut colt for $235,000 from the consignment of Northview Stallion Station (David Wade), agent (video).

Hip 415 is out of Grace Is Gone, a Malibu Moon daughter of Grade 1 placed winner Grace Anatomy, and hails from the immediate family of champion Soaring Softly and Grade 1 winner Plenty of Grace. The colt was bred in Kentucky.

A pair of well-related fillies sold for $200,000 during Tuesday's session to tie for that top spot. The first through the ring was Hip 295, a daughter of Street Sense purchased for $200,000 by Charles Zacney's Cash Is King and consigned by Chanceland Farm, agent (video).

The filly is out of Belterra (Unbridled), a Grade 2 winner who has produced four winners to date, including this filly's full sister, stakes winner Taketheodds. Hip 295 is also a half-sister to Sheave (Mineshaft), dam of 2016 Kentucky Oaks winner Cathryn Sophia, who was purchased by Zacney at this sale in 2014. The Maryland-bred filly was produced from a similar cross to Cathryn Sophia, by that classic winner's breeder Robert T. Manfuso.

A daughter of last year's leading first-crop sire Nyquist, offered as Hip 441, also sold for $200,000 (video).

The bay filly was purchased by Cary Frommer from the consignment of Becky Davis Inc., agent. Hip 441 is the second foal out of the winning Not For Love mare How My Heart Works; her first foal is Maryland Million Classic winner and graded stakes placed Monday Morning QB (Imagining). The immediate family includes Dubai World Cup winner Well Armed, as well as Grade 1 winner American Patriot. Hip 441 was bred in Maryland by Bowman & Higgins Stable.

Rounding out Tuesday's top five were a pair of yearlings by well-established sires:

• Hip 378, a filly by Hard Spun out of Fairytale Ending (IRE), which sold for $125,000 to P. Lawley-Wakelin, agent for Cambus-Kenneth Farm, from the consignment of Audley Farm Equine. The dark bay or brown filly is a half-sister to recent Brookmeade S. winner Urban Fairytale (Distorted Humor), from the immediate family of Group 1 winners Airwave (GB) and Churchill (IRE). Hip 278 was bred in Kentucky by the consignor.
• Hip 506, a colt by Munnings out of the Pioneerof the Nile mare Compulsion, which sold for $120,000 to New Day Training Center from the consignment of Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, agent. The gray or roan colt hails from the immediate family of multiple Grade 1 winner Spoken Fur. Hip 506 was bred in New York.

Over the course of the two sessions, 381 yearlings sold for $11,269,400 – the sale's fifth highest gross all-time and its best since 2007, when 574 horses sold for $13,331,400. The gross rose 23.6 percent over receipts of $9,120,700 in 2020.

The average was $29,578, a record for Midlantic Fall Yearlings, good for a 22.9 percent increase over last year's average of $24,065. The median, also a record, held steady at $20,000 throughout the sale, and marked a 42.9 percent increase over last year's median of $14,000.

The previous records for both categories were established in 2013, when 289 yearlings sold for an average of $25,847 and a median of $17,000. The RNA rate was 16.4 percent, the lowest at this sale since 2013.

Through the sale's two sessions, 381 yearlings sold for $11,269,400 for an average of $29,578 and a median of $20,000. With 75 horses reported not sold, the buy-back rate was 16.4%.

In 2020, 379 yearlings grossed $9,120,700 for an average of $24,065 and a median of $14,000. The buy-back rate was 21.7%.

“Based on what everybody else was experiencing at previous sales, we were confident it would continue on, but to have the gross up 24%, the average up 23% and the median up 43% was great,” said Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sales Director Paget Bennett.

In its pre-COVID renewal in 2019, 300 yearlings sold for $7,275,900 for an average of $24,253 and a median of $14,000.

“I always hope that we can stay even with last year,” Bennett said. “Even with COVID last year, we were still right in line with the previous year's results. And we exceeded that this year. So that was huge.”

Of the auction's stellar buy-back rate, Bennett added, “People want horses at all levels, which is good for us and good for the breeders.”

First-crop sire Mendelssohn, who was represented by the session topper Monday, secured the sale-topper Tuesday when David Scanlon paid $235,000 for a colt from the Northview Stallion Station consignment. The yearling was one of 16 to bring six figures at the auction, up from 11 in 2020.

Local breeders and consignors supported the sale and were rewarded, according to Bennett.

“We are only as good as what people send to us,” Bennett said. “We've been supported by out-of-town consignors, but we had a lot of the Midlantic breeders and consignors who did well here as well. The top seven prices were sold by local connections. They all brought good horses and they were well-received and they were rewarded.”

The massive increase in median and the sparkling buy-back rate were indicative of a stronger middle market.

“I think the market is strong,” said Northview's David Wade. “It's redundant–it's the same thing everyone says–the market is strong for the right horse. But I think it was stronger for the right horses and there was a middle market that hasn't been here for the last few years. I think that's encouraging.”

Scanlon Gets His Mendelssohn

Dave Scanlon was underbidder on Monday's session-topping son of Mendelssohn, but the Ocala-based pinhooker would not be denied Tuesday when going to a sale-topping $235,000 for another son of Coolmore's first-season sire (hip 415).

“We loved the sire,” Scanlon said after signing the ticket on the youngster. “We think he's going to be a big hit this year. Obviously, he's already been a big sales horse.”

Consigned by Northview Stallion Station, the chestnut colt is out of the unraced Grace is Gone (Malibu Moon), a daughter of Grade I-placed Grace Anatomy (Aldebaran).

“He was just very athletic with a big beautiful walk on him,” Scanlon said of the yearling. “I thought he'd be a nice horse for the 2-year-old sales. We will train him and get him started and see how he fits. He is such a nice, big mature horse, it could be Miami [Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale] or it could be back here [Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale].”

In addition to the $230,000 session topper, Mendelssohn was also represented by Monday's $160,000 top-priced filly. The stallion, winner of the 2013 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and a half-brother to leading sire Into Mischief, was also represented by fillies who sold for $900,000 and $750,000 at Keeneland September. Through Monday, he had 83 yearlings sell for an average of $163,095.

“They just look like athletes,” Scanlon said of the yearlings by Mendelssohn that he has seen. “They have really good bone, good hip and great angles on them.”

Scanlon was making his second purchase of the Midlantic sale. He went to $30,000 to acquire a filly by Uncle Lino (hip 17) Monday.

“The market has been tough,” Scanlon said. “For the right horse, it's been very good. There are a lot of good judges here and if they lead the right one up here, you've got to pay for them. Hopefully, it carries over to the 2-year-old market.”

Monday's session topper was purchased by Conor Foley of Oracle Bloodstock.Scanlon agreed he found himself bidding against more end-users while trying to maintain the discipline necessary for a pinhook prospect.

“Especially with a horse like that, you get your hopes up and you follow them up there and then you go to your limit,” Scanlon said. “It happened to me yesterday when I was underbidder on the other Mendelssohn and an end-user kind of jumps over top of you. You have to set your bar, though. We lost the one yesterday, but we were looking to get this one and stepped our game up here.”

Northview Stallion Station's David Wade purchased hip 415 on behalf of Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds for $100,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale.

“I love Mendelssohn and this was a very well-balanced horse and a very good walker and he seemed like a good bet,” Wade said of last fall's purchase. “We actually went down there and bought two. We bought an Empire Maker and a Mendelssohn and brought them both home and the owner looked at them and said, 'Let's pinhook the Mendelssohn and race the Empire Maker.'”

Filly Makes Sense for Zacney

Chuck Zacney of Cash is King, who purchased Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss) for $30,000 out of the Fasig Midlantic sales ring in 2014, was back in action in Timonium Tuesday, going to $200,000 to acquire a filly by Street Sense (hip 295) out of the same family as that 2016 GI Kentucky Oaks winner.

The dark bay yearling, bred by the late Robert Manfuso and consigned by Chanceland Farm, is out of graded stakes winner Belterra (Unbridled). The mare is also the dam of Sheave (Mineshaft), who produced Cathryn Sophia.

“Obviously, I loved the page, with Cathryn Sophia,” Zacney said after acquiring the yearling. “I've always been a fan of Street Sense. I can't tell you if I've ever had one. But once I laid eyes on this filly yesterday, she was one that I really wanted. She just stood out. She's an absolutely beautiful filly.”

The Cash is King team had another attachment to the filly.

“Most of my horses have a story,” Zacney said. “My son Alex was with me and he said, 'Dad, did you notice her date of birth?' And I hadn't. It's Mar. 5, which is Alex's birthday, too. So anything like that, we always take a second look.”

Zacney was on the grounds during Monday's first session of the Midlantic sale, acquiring three yearlings, including a filly by Tonalist (hip 90) for $110,000. But he did his bidding on the phone Tuesday and watched on his computer as the filly's price momentarily stalled.

“After $150,000 there was a lull and [Fasig-Tipton's] Peter [Penny] said, 'You may have her.' And then it went up a little bit, but I was done with that. I think it went to $165,000 or $170,000 and I said, 'Peter, let's go to $200,000.' He is yelling and they aren't recognizing the bid until finally they did and I got her for the $200,000. I loved her and I was going to go much higher. I'm thrilled to have her.”

The yearling filly is already a winner, having been named grand champion of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association's Yearling Show in Timonium in August.

“She is a lovely filly, which was why she was champion at the show,” said Chanceland Farm's Katherine Voss. “But the pedigree had nothing to do with that. She has a gorgeous pedigree–they are hard to come by with a Kentucky Oaks winner in the family and by Street Sense as well.”

Manfuso, who passed away last March, and Voss have a long association with the yearling's family. Manfuso bred and campaigned Belterra to a win in the 2001 GII Golden Rod S. and a third-place effort in the following year's GI Ashland S. Manfuso also bred Belterra's dam Cruising Haven (Shelter Half).

“She was one of the last ones that Bob bred,” Voss said of hip 295. “We bred her grandmother. And this is Belterra's last foal. I would have loved to have kept her because she's the kind that you want to keep.”

While Voss acknowledged the Midlantic sale has gained in strength, she still sees a ceiling on the top of the market.

“I think it's better than this sale has been for the last few years–it's definitely better than the last couple of years,” Voss said. “I think the market in general is stronger this year. Keeneland was really strong. But it still feels like there is a little lid on Maryland. They are not going bonkers. We are bringing some nice, solid useful horses and they can go for $75,000 or $80,000 and you get $50,000.”

Nyquist Filly Tops Eventful Sale for Davis

Cary Frommer stayed busy throughout the two-day Midlantic sale, but saved her biggest purchase of the auction for last when going to $200,000 to acquire a filly by GI Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist (hip 441) from the consignment of Becky Davis.

The yearling is out of How My Heart Works (Not For Love), whose first foal is stakes winner and graded placed Monday Morning QB (Imagining). She was bred by Davis's father Tom Bowman and Milton Higgins, III.

“I have liked her since the day she was born,” Davis said of the yearling. “She was always super spunky and had grit. She is super classy to deal with. She has always been an outstanding filly–just a little different than the rest of the fillies at the farm. I thought she was pretty special.”

How My Heart Works, who has a weanling colt by Arrogate and was bred back to Nyquist this year, was also bred by Tom and Chris Bowman and Higgins. She won first-out at Laurel in 2015, but failed to hit the board in three subsequent starts.

“We've had the whole family,” Davis said. “Her mom was a super impressive yearling, but had an injury and didn't race to her full potential, I don't believe. We kept her as a broodmare and her first foal has shown he has talent.”

The filly, one of three to hit the $200,000 mark Tuesday, marked a sweet ending to an eventful sale for Davis, who was forced into an unexpected trip to the hospital Sunday.

“At the end of the day Sunday, we were closing up and I was told one of the horses had banged his head,” Davis explained. “He had a scrape and I had some silver spray and I went in with one of my best handlers because I could tell he was agitated. I put a little bit of spray on the cut and I could tell from the look in his eye he was not ok with it. I wasn't going to spray him again, but his forelock was stuck to the cut, so I put my hand up to move his forelock over and he came at me. I was able to turn around, but he struck me about four or five times in the back of my head. I don't remember if someone opened the door or if I climbed over the door, but I got out. It was pretty scary.”

Davis watched the Nyquist filly sell from the back of the sales pavilion.

“Yes and no,” she said with a laugh when asked if the sale made up for the injuries she suffered Sunday. “The best thing for me is if that filly gets into a good racing home and I get to see her race. I think she can be a superstar. She is all that everybody wants to have in a racehorse. And even beyond that, she has such a great personality, she's going to have a great second career as a broodmare or something else. So I am excited to see her.”

Frommer left Timonium after purchasing seven yearlings. In addition to hip 441, she purchased a colt by Twirling Candy (hip 78) for $115,000 and a Union Rags colt (hip 461).

Lawley-Wakelin Gets His Fairytale Ending

Patrick Lawley-Wakelin got outbid on a filly by Lemon Drop Kid when bidding on behalf of Liz and Michael Burns at last year's Midlantic sale, but the bloodstock agent came back in 2021 to buy that filly's half-sister by Hard Spun (hip 378) for $125,000 Tuesday in Timonium on behalf of the Burnses' Cambus-Kenneth Farm.

“Liz and Michael love Lemon Drop Kid and so they said, 'Why don't you look at her and see if we can buy her,'” Lawley-Wakelin said. “We tried to buy her, but we ended up underbidders. The filly went for $92,000.”

Bred and consigned by Audley Farm Equine, hip 378 is out of Fairytale Ending (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a daughter of Airwave (GB) (Air Express) and a full-sister to group winner Aloof (Ire) and a half to the dam of multiple Group 1 winner Churchill (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

“When I saw Audley was selling the half-sister by Hard Spun, I picked up the phone and said, 'Listen guys we are back at it again.' They said, 'OK, let's look at it,” Lawley-Wakelin said. “The filly vetted great for us. She is a two-turn filly, like the Lemon Drop Kid filly. She's going to need a little bit of time to mature, which falls right into their program.”

Of the Burnses, who are based in Danville, Kentucky, Lawley-Wakelin said, “They are generally looking for a Classic-type of filly. They were introduced to the game by John R. S. Fisher and he introduced me to them. So I've known them for about 25 years. They are a wonderful couple. So I am truly excited we were able to get this filly.”

A colt from the first crop of Mendelssohn topped Monday's session, fetching a bid of $230,000 from buyer Oracle Bloodstock, agent (video).

The bay colt was offered as Hip 189 by Dreamtime Stables, agent. Out of the Malibu Moon mare Tasha's Moon, a half-sister to Grade 2 placed stakes winner Esmeraldina, the colt hails from the immediate family of Grade 1 winner Off the Tracks and Grade 2 winner and sire Concord Point. Hip 189 was bred in Kentucky by Classic Thoroughbred.

Earlier in the session, a son of Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags sold for $220,000 to Mac Robertson, agent for Novogratz Racing Stables (video).

Dark Hollow, agent, offered the colt as Hip 113. Out of the winning Flatter mare Safe Journey, the colt is a half-brother to four winners, including O Dionysus (Bodemeister) and Joy (Pure Prize), both multiple stakes winners on the mid-Atlantic racing circuit. Hip 113 was bred in Maryland by Dark Hollow Farm.

Mendelssohn was also responsible for the session's top-priced filly, which sold for $160,000 to Donato Lanni, agent for Caroline & Greg Bentley (video).

Offered as Hip 159 by Northview Stallion Station (David Wade), agent, the filly is a half-sister to a pair of winners out of the winning Curlin mare Split It. Bred in Maryland by Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds, Hip 159 is from the immediate family of champion filly Epitome and multimillionaire War Story.

Rounding out the top five were a pair of fillies with strong pedigrees:

• Hip 76, a daughter of Tiznow out of a Not For Love half-sister to four-time Grade 1 winner and two-time Maryland Horse of the Year Knicks Go, which sold for $150,000 to SBM. The filly was bred in Maryland by GreenMount Farm & Tiznow Syndicate and consigned by GreenMount Farm, agent.
• Hip 11, a filly from the first crop of Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing, who is a three-parts sister to course record-setting stakes winner Dirty (Maclean's Music), which sold for $145,000 to Newtown Anner Stud. The Maryland-bred filly was consigned by Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, agent.

Over the course of the session, 149 yearlings sold for a gross of $4,577,300. The average – $30,720 – marked 25.6 percent and 16.9 percent increases over 2020 and 2019's first sessions, respectively. The median rose 33.3 percent to $20,000 from the first-session median of $15,000 achieved in both 2020 and 2019. Eight horses sold for $100,000 during the session, compared to two sold at or above that price point in 2020 and five in 2019. The RNA rate was 16.3 percent.

Results are available online. The sale resumes Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 10 a.m.

Hip 371, a colt from the first crop of Pegasus World Cup winner Gun Runner, sold for $270,000 during Tuesday's session to top the sale (video).

The chestnut colt was purchased by Lambe Bloodstock from the consignment of Becky Davis, agent. Hip 371 out of Stormy Tak, a daughter of multiple Grade 1 winner and millionaire Lady Tak, making her a half-sister to Melody Lady, dam of this year's Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt winner Volatile. The sale topper was bred in Pennsylvania by Jon A. Marshall.

A pair of Maryland-bred colts sold for more than $200,000 during the second session to account for the sale's second- and third-highest prices. The first of these was Hip 451, a son of Flatter which sold for $250,000 to Bell Gable Stable from the consignment of Northview Stallion Station (David Wade), agent (video).

The dark bay or brown colt is out of Apple Cider, a More Than Ready daughter of Grade 2 winner Who Did It and Run, and half-sister to stakes winners Giant Run and American Victory. Hip 451 was bred in Maryland by Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds.

The third-highest price of the sale was paid for Hip 383, a son of Street Sense sold for $240,000 to West Bloodstock, agent for Repole and St. Elias Stables from the consignment of Chanceland Farm, agent (video). The bay colt is out of the Polish Numbers mare Tanca, who has seven winners from as many to race, including stakes winners Cordmaker, Las Setas, and Corvus. Hip 383 was bred in Maryland by Robert T. Manfuso and Kathryn M. Voss.

The sale's top filly was a daughter of Malibu Moon sold for $140,000 during Tuesday's session (video). Offered as Hip 541, the filly was purchased by Charles J. Zacney from the consignment of Candyland, agent. The bay filly is out of the unraced Street Cry mare Fire of Freedom, who has produced four winners to date, including multiple stakes placed Travel Advisory. Fire of Freedom is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Flat Fleet Feet. The top filly was bred in Maryland by Candyland Farm.

All told, 379 yearlings sold for a total of $9,161,200. The average was $24,172 and the median was $14,000; both figures were nearly identical to last year's results. The RNA rate was 21 percent, also on par with 2019 results.

In 2020, the sale opened with a dedicated New York-bred section to accommodate yearlings displaced by the cancellation of the Saratoga sales due to COVID-19.

The session's top hip came early when Hip 4, a New York-bred colt from the first crop of Cupid out of multiple stakes producer Gottah Penny, sold for $160,000 (video). Xtreme Racing Stables LLC purchased the chestnut colt from the consignment of Eaton Sales, agent.

Hip 4 is a half-brother to stakes-placed winners Brokered and Copper Gem, out of a winning Stravinsky half-sister to Grade 1 winner Run Man Run. The session-topper was purchased for $52,000 as a weanling at last year's Saratoga Fall Sale by Alan Quartucci, and was bred in New York by Christopher Shelli and Caliburn Farm LLC.

A daughter of Overanalyze accounted for the top price for a filly during Monday's session. Offered as Hip 6 by Hibiscus Sales, the leading filly was purchased for $120,000 by Cutair Racing (video).

Out of the multiple stakes winning Distorted Humor mare Heavenly Humor, the bay filly is a half-sister to eight winners from as many to race. Those include multiple stakes winner and recent Grade 2 Vosburgh Stakes runner-up Funny Guy and stakes winner Super Humor. Hip 6 was bred in New York by Hibiscus Stables.

During the first session, 112 yearlings sold for $2,983,000, for an average of $24,456. The median was $15,000.

• Screening measures, including temperature checks and health screening questions, will be in place to gain admittance to the sales grounds for all staff, participants and attendees;
• Cloth face coverings are required in accordance with U.S. CDC recommendations;
• Participants will not be allowed to congregate.  At least six feet of distance must be maintained between people;

• Seating capacity in the sales pavilion will be reduced below 75 percent of capacity;
• No food service will be available in the sales pavilion;
• Valet parking will not be available;
• Increased cleaning and disinfection procedures will be implemented with regular sanitation of high touch surfaces at least every two hours;
• Frequent hand washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is recommended for all attendees;

The health and safety of sale participants is of paramount importance.  These guidelines are intended as a supplement to assist with safe operations during the COVID-19 pandemic and are subject to change.

The Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale will be held on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5-6, at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md.
