These entries will also be available in the Equineline sales catalogue app. Printed versions will be available on the grounds at sale time.

“Ciaran went to Royal Ascot last year and said, 'Goldie, this was some sort of fun. We've got to do it.' I said, 'Sounds good. How are we gonna do it,” Goldthorpe said. “The plan was to buy yearlings and try our damnedest to get one to Royal Ascot and, at the end of Royal Ascot, take these horses to the sale. It was a different style pinhook. We were going to race them as opposed to blowing them down the lane [in a 2-year-old sale]. We were going to race them, show what we have and give them to a trainer that doesn't beat them up, Rusty Arnold. That way, there's a lot of meat left on the bones when somebody else wants to come by them.”

Dew Sweepers not only got one horse to Royal Ascot, they got two, Late September (Munnings) (Hip 550) and Grand Oak (Ire) (Speightstown) (Hip 521). A well-beaten fourth after hopping at the start of his main track debut at Keeneland Apr. 20, Late September earned his diploma next out on dirt at Churchill exactly one month later. Sent across the pond, the $60,000 KEESEP buy failed to fire when trying the grass at Royal Ascot, finishing 17th in the G2 Coventry S. June 14.

Grand Oak checked in second when unveiled on the dirt at Keeneland Apr. 21 and wired the field for a 4 1/4-length graduation when switched to the lawn at Churchill May 20, the same day Late September broke his maiden. Unfortunately, the $105,000 KEESEP purchase did not fair much better than her stablemate at the Royal meeting, checking in 18th in the G2 Queen Mary S. June 15.

Despite those poor finishes, the Dew Sweepers thoroughly enjoyed their Royal Ascot experience, according to Goldthorpe.

“It was awesome, even though the horses ran like shit,” the founder of Lexington Equine Insurance said. “We had a blast and we checked the box. The partners were like, 'Wow, what an experience.' We have to give a lot of credit to Royal Ascot. They treated us like we brought Secretariat over there. They rolled out to red carpet. They are so happy to have the Americans come over there and participate in their greatest show on Earth. It made us feel great.”

The Dew Sweepers is comprised of six partners and they made a total investment of around $700,000. They acquired seven yearlings, four fillies and three colts, shopping at both Keeneland and Tattersalls.

In addition to Late September and Grand Oak, their dispersal includes:

• Tituba (Good Magic) (Hip 437), filly, $125,000 KEESEP yrl, unraced
• Alcazaba (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) (Hip 455), colt, 40,000 gns TATOCT yrl, a maiden of two starts
• Buttons (Twirling Candy) (Hip 474), filly, $110,000 KEESEP yrl, won on debut on grass at Indiana June 28
• Castle Rising (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) (Hip 480), colt, 58,000 gns TATOCT yrl, unraced
• Just a Care (Ire) (Australia {GB}) (Hip 542), filly, 105,000 gns TATOCT yrl, fifth in lone start on turf at Belmont June 30

“These horse can take the new owner to Royal Ascot next year; to Kentucky Downs and run for all that money; or they can take them to the Breeders Cup,” Goldthorpe said. “That gives them an opportunity and I think they will bring a pretty good bunch of money because of that.”

As a complete dispersal, all seven juveniles will be there to sell, as per the partnership's contract.

“This was in a contract, that they will all disperse in July,” Goldthrope said. “This was the first time trying it. Some are regretting that we have the July end date and some are happy that we do and we completed the task as the contract set. Now will we adjust it for next year? We will probably tweak it a little bit. The success was giving us second thought. There are more races left in these horses and we knew there would be. I didn't know what kind of quality we would have, but we've got a quality bunch of horses going over there.”

Just because this first class of purchases is set to sell, does not mean the Dew Sweepers are done. They plan to be active at the yearling sales again this fall.

“We will be buying horses, absolutely,” said Goldthorpe. “Whether we buy them and point towards Ascot or something else. Maybe a few bottles of wine and a dinner will decide that. We're going to be invested in the game. The partners had so much fun. This not their last venture. There were some veterans in there that had to share, but for the most part, these were new people in an effort to get them excited about the game. And let me tell you, they are excited! We're not going to let them go. We're going to buy horses. We're going to sell horses. We're going to race horses, even may venture into a mare or two for the guys whose wives want to see babies being born. So it's just a very close-knit group of guys that are financially stable enough to play the game. We got lucky to put them all together and have success the first year. You won't see the end of the Dew Sweepers!”

The Fasig-Tipton Horses of All Ages Sale kicks off Monday at 3 p.m. and will include both racehorses and broodmares. It will be followed by the Fasig-Tipton July Yearling Sale Tuesday.

Mitole (Eskendereya – Indian Miss, by Indian Charlie) is a barn favorite for Spendthrift Farm's Stallion Sales Manager Mark Toothaker for several reasons, perhaps a big one being that, as Toothaker joked, “He's easy on a guy trying to sell stallion season.”

The 2019 GI Breeders' Cup Sprint champion bred over 200 mares in each of his first few years at stud, including that tough third season where many promising stallions are lucky to get 100. What has made Mitole so extremely popular?

“I think with Mitole, the biggest thing with him was just how fast he was,” Toothaker explained. “Steve [Asmussen] even said that this is the fastest horse in the world. He was hard to beat at any distance and we feel like that's what breeders have gravitated toward is his speed. The demand for him has just been amazing through the first three years.”

Bred by Edward A. Cox Jr., Mitole was a $20,000 yearling turned $140,000 OBS April 2-year-old. Campaigned by William and Corinne Heiligbrodt and trained by Steve Asmussen, the colt out of future Broodmare of the Year Indian Miss (Indian Charlie) got his first win in his third start, defeating a field of maidens by 10 lengths as a young 3-year-old. He got his first stakes win two months later in the Bachelor S. at Oaklawn Park.

“We were chasing another stallion that day,” Toothaker recalled. “When I came back to the office, I told everyone that I may have seen the best 3-year-old in the country. They thought I was talking about the other horse, but I was talking about Mitole. This was April of his 3-year-old year and he got a 107 Beyer. This horse was just incredible.”

Mitole was sidelined after a win in his next start in the Chick Lang S. due to a splint injury, but returned at four to capture six of his seven starts in 2019, including the GI Churchill Downs S. on the Kentucky Derby undercard, the GI Runhappy Metropolitan H. over MGISW McKinzie (Street Sense) and the GI Forego S. in stakes-record time. He culminated his season with a career-high 112 Beyer Speed Figure in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint and retired with over $3 million in earnings as the 2019 Champion Male Sprinter and Horse of the Year finalist.

Launched with an initial stud fee of $25,000 in 2020, Mitole's fee was brought down to $15,000 the next year when Spendthrift reduced stud fees for most of their roster in 2021. Toothaker said that as the young stallion's first foals arrived, breeders started calling with the hopes of bringing their mares back to him.

“People have loved the way these things look,” Toothaker said of Mitole's first foals. “They have great hips on them, they look like him, and they just look fast.”

Mitole sent 56 weanlings and short yearlings through the ring at the breeding stock sales. 46 sold to average $80,608 and place their sire among the top 5 first-crop weanling sires in North America in 2021. His colt out of Rode Warrior (Quality Road) sold for $285,000 at Keeneland November to Spendthrift Farm and Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt while another colt at the same sale brought $200,000.

At the upcoming Fasig-Tipton July Sale on July 12, Mitole will be represented by 13 members of his first crop.

“I feel like as we go around and do our notes out there, it's going to be a lot of the same,” Toothaker said. “It will be a horse that looks like we could take to the 2-year-old sale and it could go fast and have a chance to hit a big lick, or, it could be a horse that trainers are going to take to the track saying that we could come out with this 2-year-old and mean business from the get go.”

Brookdale Sales will send Hip 9, a Mitole colt out of the Lonhro (Aus) mare Limit, through the sales ring at Fasig-Tipton July for breeder Mineloa Farm. Martin O'Dowd said that everyone at Mineola has been impressed by this colt from the start.

“He's very, very nice,” O'Dowd said. “He's correct and has a great mind and a lovely walk. In the paddock, he just moves beautifully with a fabulous, low stride. The mare has a very deep family and it's a family that runs on dirt and turf.”

At the same sale, Rosilyn Polan's Sunday Morning Farm will send a Mitole colt through the ring as Hip 51. The yearling is out of Sweetness Galore (Rock Hard Ten), a daughter of GISW Tribulation (Danzig). Polan's favorite thing about the youngster, she said, is his powerful stride.

“I love that he is not only so fluid when he walks, but he's so purposeful,” she explained. “He acts like he's planning ahead with every footfall and just reaching for the finish line. He's a fun one to have.”

Toothaker said that he is anticipating high demand for Mitole's yearlings from a wide variety of shoppers.

“It's exciting because Bill and Corinne were active at the sales supporting him and they're going to try to have these things ready to roll as well,” he said. “I feel that the 2-year-old pinhookers all the way to the people going to the races are going to want to have a Mitole. Everybody likes fast.”

David Ingordo has followed Catalina Cruiser (Union Rags–Sea Gull, by Mineshaft) throughout his career, but the Lane's End bloodstock agent said that this year, the multiple graded stakes-winning stallion has never looked better.

“Catalina Cruiser has always been a big, well-grown horse,” Ingordo said. “I've seen him from when he was a yearling at Lane's End through his time at Mayberry Farm and with John Sadler and to coming back here to our stallion barn. When he retired, he just filled out even more. He's one of the most magnificent individuals you're going to find that's big and strong and has the body to go with his race record and substance.”

With a debut stud fee of $20,000, Catalina Cruiser bred 148 mares in his first year at Lane's End. After the stallion's first foals arrived, Ingordo said it has never been a challenge to guess their sire. The group includes plenty of good-sized, flashy chestnuts.

“Catalina Cruiser is stamping his offspring to look like himself,” he said. “They're flashy, they're big and they're strong. They have this precocious look to them. I'm a balance fanatic and the Catalina Cruisers that I have observed have great balance. He has a tremendous hindquarter, hip and great width behind and all his offspring do as well.”

In his second and third year at stud, Catalina Cruiser stood for a fee of $15,000. One of the greatest compliments a young sire can receive, according to Ingordo, is to have a mare return to him after their first mating. Such has been the case with this stallion, he said.

Bred by W.S. Farish, Catalina Cruiser was a $370,000 Keeneland September yearling. His debut win at three for Hronis Racing was followed by three straight wins as a 4-year-old, including the GII San Diego H. and GII Pat O'Brien S. Returning at five, the Sadler pupil shipped to Belmont to take the GII True North S. at six and a half furlongs in stakes-record time before going back home to California to claim repeat titles in the San Diego H. and Pat O'Brien.

Ingordo said he is often asked why Catalina Cruiser did not debut until October of his sophomore year.

“When he left Mayberry Farm, we knew he had a ton of talent, but that his mind was way ahead of his body,” he recalled. “He was this big, gangly horse and he wanted to do it, but his body wasn't ready for it yet. We gave him all the time to be the best horse he could be. When he came together as a 3-year-old, he never really looked back.”

Despite the five-time graded stakes winner's late start, Ingordo said he does not believe the same will be said of Catalina Cruiser's offspring.

“I look for them to be precocious,” he explained. “I see these 'Cruiser' babies as a little bit better versions of their sire because I think they're maybe a little bit less growthy than he was. I can see them running at two and I can see him having a 2-year-old champion.”

“I don't think they'll be limited to sprinting,” he added. “I think they'll be able to go two turns and ultimately be a Classic horse, like Catalina Cruiser's sire Union Rags and his broodmare sire Mineshaft.”

Catalina Cruiser sent 47 first-crop weanlings and short yearlings through the auction ring. Headlined by a $200,000 colt at the Keeneland November Sale, 37 sold to average $66,027 and rank their sire among the top five first-year sires in North American by weanling average.

The son of Union Rags has six yearlings entered in the upcoming Fasig-Tipton July Sale on July 12, including Hip 39, a colt out the stakes-placed Into Mischief mare She's Trouble from Scott Mallory's consignment.

“This has always been a mature colt,” Mallory said of the yearling. “He's really nice for the first foal out of the mare and he's got a lot of attributes that I like from Union Rags and Catalina Cruiser. We're hoping for the best and believe that the Catalina Cruisers are really nice foals. They have a lot of leg to them, a lot of scope and of course a lot of flash. They all seem to have a really good mind.”

Ingordo did not hesitate to say that he would be looking to get his hands on a Catalina Cruiser yearling or two for his own clients this summer.

“I don't have any pride of ownership in this stuff,” he said. “If I don't like a horse, I don't like them. I look at every horse and ask, 'Would I buy it?' and I want to buy some Catalina Cruisers because they're the kind of horses that we buy to win races and win the big races.”

“July is the sale to find athletes and the stats bear that out,” said Browning. “Moreover, one only needs to look at this year's catalogue cover to see the strength of graduates generated from Fasig-Tipton's yearling selection process.”

In addition to The July Sale, Fasig-Tipton will also host the July Selected Horses of All Ages Sale Monday, July 11. The sale was recently rebranded to include breeding stock. Nominations are accepted up until sale time.

The sale has been both expanded and renamed. Originally the July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale, it will now include not just horses of racing age, but also broodmares, broodmares with a foal at their side, and broodmare prospects.

“Last year, we conducted a dispersal in July which allowed us to open up the sale to additional breeding stock,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “Offering summer breeding stock was positively received by buyers, and that success prompted us to make this a permanent July fixture to complement our strong horses of racing age market.”

Last year's racehorse topper was SW & GSP Front Run the Fed (Fed Biz), who hammered for $440,000 to buyer George Sharp. The breeding stock session was topped by SW Jeweled Princess (Cairo Prince), who sold for $225,000 to Stoneriggs Farm while carrying her first foal by Gun Runner.

Stilleto Boy (Shackleford) (Hip 557) gave his resume a major boost last weekend with his first black-type win. On July 2, the sophomore gelding scored an emphatic victory beneath Jose Ortiz, taking the Iowa Derby by 4 1/2 lengths at odds of 16-1. The chestnut earned a 95 Beyer Speed Figure for that effort.

“We were thrilled with the win [July 2] and more over the fashion in which he won it by, beating an accomplished field of horses by 4 1/2 lengths, earning a career best 95 beyer,” Paramount Sales' Lesley Campion said. “He truly is a turn-key horse, he has been as sound as bell metal and shows up every time! I think this colt is primed for a big summer, a ton of conditions open with already a quarter of a million in earnings and maybe a trip to the Dubai Carnival as a fun target for the new owners in 2022. He is a standout physical with a fantastic mind and we are delighted to be offering him next Monday.”

Hitting the board in his first four starts, Stilleto Boy graduated at fifth asking at Oaklawn in April, defeating future GIII Indiana Derby hero Mr. Wireless (Dialed In), and was fourth in the Prairie Mile prior to his breakout win in the Iowa Derby for trainer Doug Anderson. He is a half-brother to SW Rosie My Rosie (Purge) and SP Condo Closing (Offlee Wild).

Elite offers another new stakes winner in Josie (Race Day) (Hip 501), who captured the Iowa Distaff at Prairie Meadows July 3. She kicked off 2021 with an allowance score in the slop at Oaklawn in February. Off the board next out there in Apr. 8, she won an Indiana optional claimer 20 days later and repeated in Iowa.

Out of SW Spirited Away (Awesome Again), Josie is a half to MGSW Prospective (Malibu Moon) and the dam of GSW & GISP Kalypso (Brody's Cause).

“It is always crucial to come into these horses in training sales off of wins and it is even better to come in off a stakes win,” Elite's Brad Weisbord said. “She is one of a handful of stakes-winning fillies in the catalogue. That was her first time in stakes company and I thought her race was very impressive. She ran a nine on the Ragozin sheets, which is a lifetime top and it would be competitive in Grade II races the rest of the year.”

Weisbord and Liz Crow's consignment also includes a promising sophomore colt in Hozier (Pioneerof the Nile) (Hip 659). Second in both the GII Rebel S. and Sir Barton S. for trainer Bob Baffert, the $625,000 FTSAUG purchase was transferred to Rodolphe Brisset. Failing to fire in the June 26 GIII Ohio Derby, the bay bounced back just eight days later at Ellis, winning a one-mile allowance July 4. Owned by the group known as the Avengers, he is a son of MGSW Merry Meadow (Henny Hughes).

“We ran him off eight days' rest after running in the Ohio Derby,” said SF's Tom Ryan. “That race just didn't work out for him. We thought it was a throw out race and Rodolphe felt confident enough that the horse would come back and race very well. He had good energy, his head was in the feed tub and he was training well throughout the week. It wouldn't be fair to bring him into the sale off such a sub-par performance in the Ohio Derby. It was an interesting maneuver to run a horse back on eight days' rest, but it turned out to be the right one. Getting a win on a Saturday afternoon is what it's all about.”

Ryan continued, “He has shown he has class and he will fit nicely in someone's program. He is lightly enough raced horse with a lot of conditions ahead of him that he can be a lot of fun for a lot of people.”

Ryan also pointed out another sophomore colt of note who broke his maiden June 23 named Myopic (Candy Ride {Arg}) (Hip 525). Off the board in two starts for Baffert, the SF homebred donned cap and gown by six lengths at Indiana.

“He won quite emphatically about 10 days ago and ran an 85 Beyer,” Ryan said. “He really looks like a progressive colt. He is just figuring things out.”

Myopic's second dam is Grade I winner Key Phrase (Flying Paster), who is the dam of SW Yankee Gentleman (Storm Cat).

“He only has sight in one eye,” Ryan said. “We were slated to sell him as a foal and he got this little eye injury. He was raised with Gerry Dilger and we thought it would rectify itself by the time he was a yearling, but it didn't really. He ended up losing sight in the eye. He is a big boy now and he is unaffected by it. He is out there strutting his stuff and looks like he wants to become a nice racehorse.”

The trio of Fasig-Tipton July auctions kick off Monday with the Breeding Stock Sale starting at 2 p.m. and the Horses of Racing Age Sale immediately following. The Fasig-Tipton July Selected Yearlings Sale will take place Tuesday, beginning at 10 a.m.
