In a race in which the emphasis was on speed, speed and more speed, Harris Farms' hard knocking Fashionably Fast proved gamest of all, as he dug deep while in between horses late to win Sunday's $100,000 Tiznow Stakes at Santa Anita by a head. Trained by Dean Pederson and ridden by Tiago Pereira, Fashionably Fast, a 6-year-old California-bred gelding by Lucky Pulpit, got a flat mile in 1:37.14 while taking the Tiznow for the second consecutive year at the Arcadia, Calif., track.

Sponsored by the CTBA, the Tiznow is part of the Golden State Series for eligible California-bred or sired older horses. The Tiznow is named for the California-bred two-time Breeders' Cup Classic winner from 2000 and 2001 who was trained by Jay Robbins.

Breaking from the outside in a field of five, Fashionably Fast was part of a four-horse scramble for the lead, as recent allowance winner Desmond Doss had a head advantage over Margot's Boy, with Surfing Star just a half length in front of the winner, who was hung four-wide around the clubhouse turn.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Heading to the far turn, Fashionably Fast moved into second, a half length back of Desmond Doss and these two traded punches to the sixteenth pole, where they were joined by a late running Brandothebartender. In the end, Fashionably Fast simply wouldn't be denied.

“This horse has so much heart, mucho corazon!” said Pereira, who has now ridden Fashionably Fast in 19 out of his 20 starts and in all eight of his victories. “None of these races are easy, but he tries so hard. Today, we were wide going into the first turn, but he's got so much speed and I didn't want to take too much hold of him. He relaxed a little down the backside and when we were between the number one (Desmond Doss) and the number three (Brandothebartender), he gave everything.”

Third off of a 5 ½ month layoff in the six-furlong Don Valpredo Cal Cup Sprint on Jan. 16, Fashionably Fast, who registered his fifth career stakes win, was off as the 4-5 favorite and paid $3.80, $2.40 and $2.10.

“I wasn't too worried about him being wide,” said Pederson. “He's in the clear and he was on the bridle for Tiago, which was important. I was a little worried when he got a little keen up the backside, but you (could) tell at the three-eighth pole we had no excuse. He doesn't make (anything) easy, he's just a very game horse.

“I almost feel more confident when he's tucked in a battle like that than when he's out there by himself. But then at that point, you either win or you lose and you just hope for the best. Good horses make it easy.”

Owned by Harris Farms, Per Antonsen and John Nicoletti, Fashionably Fast, who is out of the Forestry mare Fall Fashion, is now 20-8-4-3 overall. With the winner's share of $60,000, he increased his earnings to $568,245.

For his part, Desmond Doss, a Nick Alexander homebred trained by Steve Miyadi, ran a tremendous race in defeat while pressed the entire trip. Off at 5-2 with Abel Cedillo, he paid $3.00 and $2.10 while finishing a head in front of Brandothebartender.

Trained by Craig Dollase and ridden by Umberto Rispoli, Brandothebartender was finishing with a flourish while wide-out and ended up 12 lengths in front of Margot's Boy. Off at 5-1, “Brando” paid $2.10 to show.

Fractions on the race were 23.07, 46.42, 1:11.49 and 1:24.29.

With a recent race under his belt, Harris Farms' highly accomplished homebred Fashionably Fast is back to defend his title in Sunday's $100,000 Tiznow Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif. Named for the California-bred two-time Breeders' Cup Classic winner, the Tiznow has attracted a field of five older California-bred or sired horses and will be contested at one mile on the main track.

Nick Alexander's ascendent Desmond Doss, fresh off an impressive gate to wire win versus state-bred allowance horses at one mile on Feb. 5, rates a big look, as do versatile Margot's Boy and the venerable Brandothebartender, who will be making his 41st start on Sunday.

The Tiznow is part of the lucrative Golden State Series, which is sponsored by the CTBA and is available to eligible California-bred or sired horses.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

A 6-year-old gelding by Lucky Pulpit, Fashionably Fast capped a six-race winning streak in taking last year's Tiznow on March 1. Subsequently second in the Grade 2 Triple Bend Stakes going seven furlongs June 7, Fashionably Fast threw in a clunker in the G1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar Aug. 1, running a non-threatening sixth at odds of 7-2.

Trained by Dean Pederson and owned in partnership with Per Antonsen and John Nicoletti, Fashionably Fast was then given several months off prior to resurfacing in the Don Valpredo Cal Cup Sprint on Jan. 16, a race in which he rallied to finish third, beaten 3 ¼ lengths. Out of Harris Farms' Forestry mare Fall Fashion, Fashionably Fast appears primed for his best as he seeks his fifth stakes win with regular rider Tiago Pereira up. With earnings of $508,245, he'll try to improve upon an overall mark of 19-7-4-3.

A runaway 4 ½-length one-mile allowance winner Feb. 5, Desmond Doss, who is trained by Steve Miyadi and is named for the legendary World War II Medal of Honor winner, will be making his third start off a four-month freshening and will likely have theft on his mind with Abel Cedillo back aboard. A 5-year-old homebred full horse by Grazen out of Alexander's Malek mare Malley Girl, Desmond Doss has three wins from nine starts and will be seeking his first stakes win.

A 4-year-old gelding by red-hot sire Clubhouse Ride, Margot's Boy comes off a ninth place performance in the Unusual Heat Turf Classic at 1 1/8 miles on Jan. 16, but retains the services of Juan Hernandez while cutting back in distance and transitioning to the main track. Trained by Craig Lewis and owned by his breeder Alfred Pais, Margot's Boy has two thirds from as many tries at one mile on dirt and will likely employ a stalking style.

A close second in the G2 Del Mar Derby on turf five starts back on Sept. 6, Margot's Boy is out of the English-bred mare Margot Machance and will be seeking his first stakes win in what will be his 14th start. He comes off a big year in which he banked $186,456 from a 2020 mark of 11-3-13.

Trained by Craig Dollase, 8-year-old gelding Brandothebartender brings an overall mark of 40-6-6-14 to the Tiznow party and will be ridden for the third consecutive time by Umberto Rispoli. Trained by Craig Dollase, this son of top sprinter Tribal Rule notched his most recent win in a 1,000 yard allowance at Los Alamitos four starts back on Dec. 19, which was his only win on dirt but it is not considered a Thoroughbred win as it was accomplished in a mixed breed race. Third in his only one mile dirt start, “Brando,” who is owned by Flawless Racing, Brian Flanagan and Michael Jarvis, is the leading Tiznow money earner with $536,364.

Fashionably Fast, prepping for this Saturday's $150,000 Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint at six furlongs at Santa Anita, worked four furlongs this morning in 48.40 under regular rider Tiago Pereira at the Arcadia, Calif., track.

“He went fine,” trainer Dean Pederson said. “Hopefully, we're where we need to be. I had him in 47 and three or four, something like that. Times are irrelevant. It's not like we're deciding to run in a maiden 50 or a maiden 20. It will be a competitive race. You just have to hope for the best.

“He had run hard and just needed a little breather,” Pederson added, explaining the gelding's absence of five months since last Aug. 1 when he finished sixth of eight behind victorious Collusion Illusion in the Grade I Bing Crosby at Del Mar. “I have an owner who's very cooperative.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Actually, Fashionably Fast has three owners: breeder John Harris, Per Antonsen and John Nicoletti, for whom Pederson has trained the last 20 or so years.

A 6-year-old chestnut son of Lucky Pulpit, Fashionably Fast has a 7-4-2 record from 18 starts with earnings of $490,245.

“Like I say, the horse has run hard for us, he ran his eyeballs out against McKinzie (second in the Grade 2 Triple Bend last June 7 to the four-time Grade I winner that was recently retired to stud at Gainesway Farm near Lexington, Ky.).”

Prior to the Triple Bend, Fashionably Fast had reeled off six straight victories, four of them in California-bred stakes.

“The Bing Crosby didn't unfold the way we thought it would and he was a tired horse,” Pederson said. “At that point we decided to give him a few months breather.

“Things have gone well since he came back and if we get beat, we'll have to get outrun. He's had several breezes; he hasn't missed a work.

“One thing about this horse: he doesn't owe anybody a dime.”

The lightly raced sophomore Collusion Illusion (Twirling Candy) will try to give his elders a run for their money Saturday in Del Mar’s GI Bing Crosby S., a “Win and You’re In” event for the GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint S. Opening his account with a pair of wins, including the GII Best Pal S. last summer, he was pulled up when trying two turns in the GI American Pharoah S. in September. Returning May 17, he scored a decisive victory in a six-panel optional claimer at Santa Anita and repeated that performance in the GIII Lazaro Barrera S. there June 20.

Fashionably Fast (Lucky Pulpit) won six straight races, including four Cal-bred stakes over the winter. The chestnut enters this off a second-place finish behind MGISW McKinzie (Street Sense) in the GII Triple Bend S. last time June 7. McKinzie was the morning-line favorite in this event at entries, but it was announced he would be scratched Wednesday.

Dual Grade III winner Law Abidin Citizen (Twirling Candy) takes a crack at the highest level here. Victorious in the GIII Longacres Mile H. last August, he was fourth I the GII San Carlos S. Mar. 7 at Santa Anita and missed by a hand behind stakes winner Ax Man (Misremembered) in an Arcadia optional claimer May 16 and won a 6 1/2-panel event there last time June 14.

The 3-year-old Collusion Illusion and the 5-year-old Fashionably Fast lead a nine-horse field of talented sprinters in Saturday's 6-furlong, $250,000 Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) on NBCSN, with live coverage from Del Mar beginning at 7 p.m. ET. The Bing Crosby winner will receive an automatic berth into the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The three-hour program, in association with TVG, marks the fifth telecast this year in the “Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In – presented by America's Best Racing” on NBC and NBCSN from some of North America's most iconic racetracks. The series leads to the 37th Breeders' Cup World Championships at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., scheduled for Nov. 6-7 on NBC and NBCSN. The complete series TV schedule can be accessed here.

Commentary and discussion for the telecast will be anchored by TVG's Todd Schrupp and Simon Bray. Post time for the Bing Crosby is 9:30 p.m. ET.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>
Collusion Illusion, trained by Mark Glatt and ridden by Flavien Prat, has won four of five starts, but will be challenging older horses for the first time. He comes into the Bing Crosby off an excellent performance in the 6 ½-furlong Lazaro Barrera Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita Park on June 20, winning by 3 ¼ lengths. Owned by Dan Agnew, Rodney Orr, Jerry Schneider and John Xitco, Collusion Illusion won both his starts at Del Mar last year, breaking his maiden at 5 furlongs in July, and following up that performance with a win in the Best Pal Stakes (G2).

Collusion Illusion made his next start in the American Pharoah Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park on Sept. 27, and was pulled up in the stretch. After a nearly eight-month layoff, he returned in May for his 3-year-old debut with a sharp 3-length win in a 6-furlong allowance optional claiming race at Santa Anita.

California-bred Fashionably Fast, trained by Dean Pederson and ridden by Tiago Pereira, won six consecutive races dating back to July of last year, including three at Del Mar, before stepping into graded stakes company in the 7-furlong Triple Bend (G2) at Santa Anita on June 7. He put up a tough battle against top older horse McKinzie into the stretch, but finished second by 1 ½ lengths.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert entered McKinzie in the Bing Crosby, but said Wednesday that he would be scratched.

Prior to the Triple Bend, Fashionably Fast opened this year winning the California Cup Sprint Stakes and the Tiznow Stakes at Santa Anita.

A challenge from Kentucky comes from Calumet Farm's 4-year-old Lexitonian, who is being shipped to California following a scratch at the gate in last Saturday's Alfred G. Vanderbilt Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. A chestnut son of 2004 Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Speightstown, Lexitonian, trained by Jack Sisterson and ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, finished third by less than a length in last October's Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes (G2) at Keeneland. After a 10th-place finish in the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn in April, Lexitonian rebounded with a solid win in a 7-furlong allowance optional claiming race at Churchill Downs on May 29.

Harris Farm's 6-year-old gelding Desert Law fought Cistron down the stretch in last year's Bing Crosby Stakes, finishing second by a half-length. A California-bred son of Desert Code, trained by Carla Gaines, Desert Law made his first start of this year in the 6-furlong Thor's Echo Stakes on June 13 at Santa Anita, finishing third as the even-money favorite. Desert Law will be ridden by Victor Espinoza.

W.C. Racing's 4-year-old gelding Wildman Jack, winner of four of nine starts, will make his dirt track debut on Saturday. Trained by Doug O'Neill, Wildman Jack, a bay son of two-time Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner Goldencents, made his biggest career score on March 7 when he captured the Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint (G3) in stakes-record time at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. He was scheduled to make his next start in the Al Quoz Sprint (G1) at Meydan but the race was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. He returned to the U.S. and won the Daytona Stakes (G3) on the turf at Santa Anita on May 23 by a nose over Sparky Ville. However, in his most recent start, he trailed the field in the Shakertown Stakes (G2) at Keeneland on July 11.
