Walshtown Stables' yearling colt by Blue Bresil (Fr) brought a sale-topping €62,000 from Glenvale Stud during the Tattersalls Ireland February National Hunt Sale on Tuesday.

The son of Maryota (Fr) (Martaline {GB}) (lot 113) is a half-brother to G1 Tolworth Novices' Hurdle third Mr Glass (Ire) (Sholokhov {Ire}). Under the second dam is multiple Grade 1-winning hurdler Yanworth (GB) (Norse Dancer {Ire}).

From the same consignment was another Blue Bresil colt (lot 7) which attracted a winning bid of €50,000 from Niall Bleahen. The bay is a half-brother to G1 Ellier Champion Novice Chase winner Feronily (Ire) (Getaway {Ger}), as the duo are out of Vickeeto (Ire) (Old Vic {GB}).

Walk In The Park (Ire)'s son of Fleur d'Ainay (Fr) (Poliglote {GB}) (lot 66) caught the eye of Grange Stud at €43,000. His dam captured a Grade 1 chase in France, and is already responsible for Zurekin (Ire) (Martaline {GB}), a listed winner and third in the G2 Prix La Barka Hurdle.

The one-day sale grossed €1,039,200 for 93 sold from 162 offered (57%). The average was €11,174 (-10%) and the median was €7,000 (-18%).

Tattersalls Ireland's CEO Simon Kerins said, “The February National Hunt Sale marked a satisfactory start to the trade for the beginning of 2024. We would also like to congratulate Walshtown Stables for yet again bringing a quality draft to market.”

Tally Ho Stud's first-crop sire Inns Of Court (Ire) had an impressive 21 winners on the board prior to Monday's Listed Ballyhane Blenheim S. and one of them Megarry (Ire) became his first black-type winner in that six-furlong Fairyhouse contest. Off the mark at the fourth attempt over this trip at The Curragh last month, the Gavin Cromwell-trained €25,000 Goffs Sportsman's graduate had finished runner-up to another of the sire's progeny in the re-opposing Lia Fail (Ire) in a Navan conditions race Sept. 2.

Away smartly from the widest draw, the 9-1 shot was kept handy by Gary Carroll and mastered the 6-5 favourite Mansa Musa (Ire) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}) a furlong out en route to a convincing 2 1/4-length success with Lia Fail another 1 1/4 lengths behind in third making it a one-three for the impactful son of Invincible Spirit (Ire).

“He's only coming, this lad,” Carroll said. “Inns Of Court didn't win until the very back-end himself. Every run he's been improving and he was very professional there today. I didn't make enough use of him the last day, I should have won. It was a good run, he's very honest and hopefully he'll step forward again. He'll get seven anyway, I'm not sure about a mile as he's not a slow horse.”

A store by Lucky Lion (Ger) already named Arthur (Ger) (lot 358) topped the Tattersalls Ireland July Store Sale Part II to bring the curtain down on the sale company's store sale season on Thursday.

Derek O'Connor made a winning bid of €32,000 on behalf of Eoin Barry/Sean Aherne for the son of the multiple listed-winning jumper and Grade 3-placed Ajesha (Ger) from the Liss House consignment.

Glen Stables' lot 418, a grey gelding by Yeats (Ire) was next on the buyers' sheets at €27,000. He was picked up by Ashgrove Stables/Darren O'Dwyer Bloodstock.

Rounding out the top three was €24,000 purchase lot 526, a gelded son of Getaway (Ger) and Misty Rose (Ire) (Presenting {GB}) from Mountain View Stud. The Crawford Bros signed the ticket on the relation to Grade 1-winning chaser Ballycasey (Ire) (Presenting {GB}).

The one-day Part II Sale grossed €752,500 for 125 sold of 224 offered (56%). The average dipped 9% to €6,020 and the median was static at €5,000.

Simon Kerins CEO of Tattersalls Ireland said, “What a summer it has been, culminating in a vibrant July Store Sale–the finale of our three successful store sales in 2023. The journey began with the May Store Sale, where we welcomed an impressive turnout of buyers who eagerly sought out quality individuals.

We proudly presented the market-leading Derby Sale, which lived up to its reputation as the pinnacle of store sales. Witnessing, yet again, the highest-priced National Hunt store sold anywhere this year at €265,000 was phenomenal, along with 33 horses achieving €100,000 or more, and five horses fetching €200,000 or above–both records for any store sale this year. Significantly, the average of €53,583 set the highest mark of any store sale in 2023.

“And now, as we conclude the July Store Sale, we reflect on a strong trade which produced a record clearance rate and figures which dropped marginally behind last year's record-breaking sale.”

Consigned by Liss House, he is related to group winner G3 La Coupe winner Ultimately Lucky (Ire) (Kris {GB}), and the Classic-placed Group 3 winner Berine's Son (Irish River {Fr}).

Liss House also offered the day's second-dearest lot–lot 219, Kicour La (Fr) (Nom De d'La {Fr}). Virginia Considine Racing picked up the 3-year-old for €50,000. The gelding's Robin Des Champs (Fr) dam is a half-sister to a pair of winners.

Total turnover stood at €2,396,300 for 168 horses sold at the end of the day. The average was €14,264 and the median was €11,750.

Simon Kerins CEO of Tattersalls Ireland said, “This sale provides vendors the first opportunity to sell their 3-year-olds and the demand for quality individuals remained strong. The footfall seen over the last two days was impressive and we extend our gratitude to the large contingent of Irish and UK buyers who actively participated, alongside many first-time visitors who contributed to the bustling atmosphere at Fairyhouse.

“The early timing of the May Store Sale has always been eagerly anticipated by point-to-point handlers, and this year was no exception with plenty of demand for the choice lots throughout the day.

“Our attention now turns to the highly anticipated market-leading Derby Sale, which takes place on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 June. Our team eagerly anticipates welcoming back our valued clients and presenting the cream of the store sale crop in a catalogue full of quality.”

GAIN The Advantage Series will continue to be supported by Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) and GAIN Equine Nutrition for the third consecutive year. Last year's series was won jointly by trainers Pat Martin and Kevin Coleman, who shared an overall league prize of €5,000 worth of GAIN equine products.

After two successful years, this year there will be an added race at Tramore Racecourse. The race will be restricted to horses owned by a syndicate or racing club to support and encourage the growth in this area, and like the other races in the series will benefit from a 50% increase in prize-money. Each trainer will receive points for their successes over the course of the series through a grading process designed to give equal opportunity to each trainer to win the overall prize. The number of points per win or placing at each leg will be based on the number of winners the trainer recorded throughout 2022.

“I think the series has grown in strength over the past two years because it acknowledges not only the owner with the increased prize-money, but also the trainer with the league table, the breeder and the hard-working stable staff,” Philip Gilligan, Irish Country Manager, GAIN Equine Nutrition, said.

The series will commence at Cork Racecourse on Apr. 21 and then proceed to Navan, Ballinrobe, Tramore, Tipperary, Killarney, Naas, and Fairyhouse with the final at Leopardstown.

Advertise (GB)'s colt foal (lot 123) was the most expensive lot on the day during Tattersalls Ireland's Sapphire Sale at Fairyhouse on Saturday. The Sapphire Sale featured Flat-bred yearlings, foals and broodmares and was the final sale of the year for Tattersalls Ireland.

Knocked down for €38,000 to Micheal Orlandi on behalf of Ballyphilip Stud, the bay is a half-brother to three winners out of his winning dam, herself a Fusaichi Pegasus half-sister to champion and Classic heroine Misty For Me (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and champion and juvenile Group 1 winner Ballydoyle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) among others. Part of the sale's top conignore Olive O'Connor's draft (five sold for an aggregate of €79,500), the colt was born on Feb. 23.

Paul McCartan of Ballyphilip Stud said via phone, “I saw some of the sire's stock through the autumn at the yearling sales and liked them. I also like the fact that Advertise was a Group 1-winning juvenile and then went on to win the [G1] Commonwealth Cup. I viewed this colt yesterday and this morning–he has a fine pedigree and has four champion 2-year-olds on his page.”

The late Pivotal (GB)'s 4-year-old daughter Super Proud (GB) was the dearest mare to go through the ring at €35,000. BBA Ireland snapped up the Rockview Stables-consigned winning bay from the family of Australian Group 1 winner Beaten Up (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}).

Paul Curran was in charge of bidding and said, “She is for a client and we love her sire, that was a very important factor. There are some well-bred, unraced half-siblings to come and it is a nice page. She is an outcross so that gives lots of options.”

A chestnut daughter of Calyx (GB) (lot 20) was the most expensive yearling sold, catching the eye of father-daughter duo Con and Amy Marnane, who paid €30,000 for the half-sister to listed winner and G2 Queen Mary S. and G2 Lowther S. runner-up Easton Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

Marnane said of the Browne Brothers Bloodstock offering, “We'll take her home and prepare her for the breeze-ups next spring. She has a gorgeous pedigree with black-type under every dam on the page.

“Calyx was unbelievable the day he won at Royal Ascot and we supported him with our own mares. We sold a colt by him out of Mia Divina (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) to Andrew Balding at Book 2 for 145,000gns.”

A total of 100 lots (54%) sold from 184 offered for a gross of €599,400. The average was €5,994 and the median was €4,000. Valfredo Valiani spent €43,500 on six lots to lead all buyers.

CEO Simon Kerins said, “Once again, we are indebted to every vendor and each purchaser for their trust and support of the Sapphire Sale. European buyers, particularly from Italy and Poland, have made a contribution and the network of Tattersalls Ireland's International Agents played a significant part in today's sale. It was very apparent as we were inspecting yearlings in the Spring that there was genuine enthusiasm for our newest yearling sale and we are in a position now to work on it and move it forward for next year.

“So as the year closes, we can reflect on a year of so many achievements with the Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale smashing records, headed by a historic top lot of €520,000 and a record number of six-figure lots and a best-ever average of €38,155. The September Yearling Sale continued in the same fashion setting its own records with 70 lots selling for €50,000 or more as well as a record median and an average and turnover just below 2021's records. These results prove that when we are provided with the best horses we can deliver. Our hope is that these results and our improved facilities will continue to convince more consignors that they can and will achieve the very best results in the Tattersalls Ireland sales ring.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the team for their hard work and dedication throughout the year and to ITM for their continued support. We can now look forward to following the careers of our new graduates and get back on the road searching for the class of 2023.”

Consignor David Minton said of the March-born yearling, “He is a lovely horse and by the right sire, which was important. He was bred by Robert Waley-Cohen, who is cutting back on numbers now that his son Sam has finished riding.”

Allenstown Stables consigned lot 28, a colt by Soldier Of Fortune (Ire), who caught the eye of Ian Ferguson for €40,000. He is a half-brother to G1 Guinness H. Chase hero Foxy Jacks (Ire) (Fame And Glory {GB})

Two horses brought €37,000 apiece and they both went to T Hillman. The first, lot 60, is a gelded son of Gentlewave (Ire) from Mill House Stud. His dam was placed at listed level over hurdles in France. Loughview Stud offered lot 93, a gelding by Poet's Word (Ire), who is a half-brother to Group 3-winning chaster Ballynagour (Ire) (Shantou) and to the Grade 3-placed chaser Simply Wings (Ire) (Winged Love {Ire}).

A total of 45 yearlings sold from 93 offered (48%) for a gross of €725,150. The average and median both posted big gains at €16,114 (+60%) and €14,000 (+21%), respectively.

The sale continues with National Hunt foals from Sunday through Nov. 10. There is also a broodmare session later in the day on Nov. 10.
