Blood will out, so they say, and in the case of Onesto (Ire) this is certainly true. The most cursory glance at his pedigree gives you two of the most talked about and revered racehorses of the modern era – his sire Frankel (GB) and broodmare sire Sea The Stars (Ire). But it pretty much goes without saying when it comes to Frankel's offspring that there's an awful lot more going on as you take a closer look at his page.

Bred by American-based Adam Bowden of Diamond Creek Farm, Onesto could just as easily have appeared in the Juddmonte studbook. In fact, just one generation back his family does just that. His dam Onshore (GB) was sold to Bowden by Juddmonte as a three-year-old for 320,000gns.

“Her pedigree was the huge draw for me,” Bowden said in a TDN interview back in 2022. It is easy to see why. Onshore is a daughter of Kalima (GB) (Kahyasi {GB}), who is a full-sister to the celebrated Hasili (GB), dam of the stallions Dansili (GB), Champs Elysees (GB) and Cacique (GB) as well as the top racemares Banks Hill (GB), Intercontinental (GB) and Heat Haze (GB).

He added, “We had circled the mare and my agent Mike Akers went to see her and said, 'well if you're willing to spend what it takes to buy her, then I think she is the type of filly that we want.' And it worked out.”

Indeed it did. Onesto was stopping the clock even before his first race, with an eye-catching breeze in Ocala, Florida which sent agent Hubert Guy running almost as fast to ensure that he could assemble a syndicate to buy and race Onesto.

That team, which contributed to him being bought for $535,000, consisted of the former champion trotting trainer, driver and breeder Jean-Etienne Dubois, his father Jean-Pierre-Joseph Dubois, Ecurie Hunter Valley, Ecurie Billon, Onesto's trainer Fabrice Chappet and Guy himself. Crucially, too, Haras d'Etreham was involved from the start and now, after a Group 1-winning career, that is where Onesto finds himself as he embarks on his second career as a stallion.

Nicolas de Chambure of Haras d'Etreham recalls, “We got a funny phone call from Hubert Guy after he breezed, and he said that he saw something special from a horse that was not meant to do what he did that early in his career, and because of his breeding. And he said he had a lot of faith in the horse since he saw him breeze. So it was mainly him and Jean-Etienne Dubois at the time that put a syndicate together. And we participated because we agreed that we saw something a bit different, a bit special. And that's how it all started.”

Having returned to Europe to begin his training at Chappet's Chantilly yard, the chestnut colt made his winning debut over a mile at Chantilly that September.

“Onesto got a Rising Star from the TDN when he won first time out,” de Chambure says. “He arrived in Chantilly in June with Fabrice Chappet. Fabrice was taking his time with him. He didn't want to rush him into into fast work too early, but you know, the more he was doing with him, the more he was seeing things that the breeze-up suggested. And it was excitement and relief and a bit of a mix when he won so well in a very good maiden in Chantilly. And the way he did it, with that great turn of foot. The dream was really alive then.”

A below-par run when eighth in the G3 Prix de Fontainebleau on his first start at three may have felt like a setback at the time, but Onesto soon put that behind him when winning another important Classic trial, the G2 Prix Greffulhe, on his next start three weeks later.

His wide draw in gate 14 did not help his chances in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club, in which Onesto was fifth behind Vadeni (Fr) but he again bounced back, this time for his first start in the colours of his new part-owner Gerard Augustin-Normand in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris. Following that first success at the top level, Onesto returned to the land of his birth to run a fine second to Luxembourg (Ire) in the G1 Irish Champion S., with Vadeni just behind him that time.

“His career has been [a mixture of] great results and unlucky moments as well. He got some bad draws, sometimes it was the wrong ground,” says de Chambure in reference to the heavy conditions the horse encountered in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe of 2022. “But, you know, every time things went his way, he showed how good he was, with that turn of foot, and that he was a true Group 1 horse and Group 1 winner.

“The Grand Prix de Paris is becoming one of the main race days in France of the year because it's Bastille Day, so there is a big concert and a lot of people at the races and a great atmosphere. He beat a really good field that day.”

Remaining in training as a four-year-old, Onesto warmed up with a fourth-place finish over a mile in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois and also took third, beaten just a length and three-quarters when making his second appearance in the Arc last season.

De Chambure continues, “In France you have to have that tactical speed to quicken and that's his main attribute, I think. His last 600 metres in the Arc were amazing and he was only beaten a head for second. His last 200 metres were the quickest of the race.”

Onesto's team of owners, a number of whom are also noted breeders, remains fully behind him at stud.

“It was good because there were some new owners in the game, so it was great for them. There were some older people that have been involved in racing all their life. So it was a good mix,” de Chambure adds. “All of the people that were involved in his career are staying involved for his stallion career. And you know, he's got such a good pedigree, he could really make it as a stallion, and the journey continues because the group is the same. We've opened the horse for syndication but they all stayed involved at a level in the horse.”

Haras d'Etreham's long history of standing stallions includes the recent extraordinary turnaround of Wootton Bassett (GB), from a one-time €4,000 sire to his eventual sale to Coolmore and his current place as the joint-second-most expensive stallion in Europe. It would be no easy feat to emulate that story but de Chambure feels confident that Onesto has enough qualities to at least pique breeders' interest at this crucial early stage.

“When you talk to breeders, you feel that the last few years, some good horses have done it coming from lighter pedigrees and it was more the racing and the [horse's] sire that were important,” he says. “Then a horse like Onesto retires, coming from one of the best Juddmonte families. And suddenly, breeders come to us and say they're so excited about this horse because he's so well bred. So it is very important to breeders, and it gives him credit. It gives him, I think, more chance than just another horse.”

Onesto's next test comes when the doors of the Haras d'Etreham stallion unit are thrown wide to welcome visitors during this weekend Route des Etalons. He's bound to be busy, but de Chambure is not worried about him coping with the extra attention.

He says, “He's travelled the world. He's been to Japan, he's been to America, he's been to the breeze-ups in Florida. So, you know, he's got a great mind and he has settled really well here.”

ARCADIA, USA–Whisper it, and a few people have been doing so since the huddle started growing at Clockers' Corner over the last few mornings, but Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) should not be overlooked in a potentially red-hot running of the GI Breeders' Cup Turf on Saturday.

On Monday morning his trainer Fabrice Chappet was one of the few to be found trackside just before sun up at Santa Anita. Though he is fielding his first runner at the Breeders' Cup, he is no stranger to American racing, having worked for a number of years for John Nerud, albeit on the other side of the country. Chappet also saddled Blue Panis (Fr) to be second in the GII Oak Tree Derby at the now-defunct Hollywood Park back in 2010.

A neat chestnut, on the small side compared to a number of Frankel's runners, Onesto is better travelled than many of his fellow competitors, even if that is not immediately apparent from this bare racing record. Born in Ireland at Coolmore, he was sent to Tattersalls in England as a yearling and, retained by his Kentucky-based breeder Diamond Creek Farm at 185,000gns, he was then exported to Florida, mid-pandemic, where he was prepared for the Ocala Spring breeze-up sale.

Hubert Guy signed the ticket there at $535,000, and Onesto returned to Europe, this time to France, the fourth country in his young life, where he settled into Chappet's Chantilly stable.

Lightly raced but a winner at two, by the spring of his three-year-old season he landed a key Classic trial in the G2 Prix Greffuhle and though the luck of the draw did not go his way in the Prix du Jockey Club, he still managed fifth, before landing the biggest win of his career in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris.

“Onesto has been very consistent and has always run good races except this year in the Irish Champion,” said Chappet. “He hasn't been lucky all his life, like in the French Derby, but he has always run well, including in the Japan Cup last year. He was seventh but again quite unlucky. So he really has been consistent except for some reason this year in Leopardstown, but then he came back nicely in the Arc.”

Third in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, less than two lengths off the winner Ace Impact (Fr), who has already been retired to stud, Onesto has his own stallion berth booked at France's historic Haras d'Etreham, which has been one of his owners for most of his racing career, along with a group which includes Jean-Etienne Dubois and Gerard-Augustin Normand.

Chappet continued, “He looks happy and he travelled well so I'm sure he's going to run a good race. We have to wait for the draw, and he's a horse you want to wait with. We saw what to do in the Arc and we saw what not to do in the Irish Champion this year, because he ran very well in that last year.”

On the horse's impending retirement to stud, he added, “This is what it's about. He's a four-year-old, and we have had two horses going to stud this year, as we had [G1 Prix Jean Prat winner] Good Guess as well, so for a boutique hotel like ours, 80 horses, I am very proud of that.”

Like most of the incoming European contingent, Onesto will be allowed out on to the track on Tuesday, but don't expect to see him scorching the turf.

“We had to van him from Chantilly to Newmarket, and then he flew from there to Shannon, and then from Ireland to here. He'll trot tomorrow. It's been a long trip so we'll just go easy all week,” said his trainer.

For a seasoned world traveller, that should present no problem for Onesto, who has one last chance to star in the land of his breeder. And he would not be the first member of his family to feature prominently at the Breeders' Cup either. His Juddmonte-bred dam Onshore (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) is a daughter of Kalima (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}), herself a full-sister to Hasili (GB) whose daughter Banks Hill (GB) (Danehill) won the Filly & Mare Turf in 2001, a feat followed four years later by her full-sister Intercontinental (GB).

Group 1 winner Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Onshore {GB}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}), who is bound for the Breeders' Cup next month, will stand at Haras d'Etreham in 2024, the French stud announced on Tuesday.

Bred by Diamond Creek Farm in Ireland, the Fabrice Chappet runner was a debut winner at Chantilly in September of his 2-year-old year and won the G2 Prix Greffulhe in his second start at three. Fifth in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club, he claimed the Grand Prix de Paris last July and the colt was second in the G1 Irish Champion S. that September. Currently racing for Gerard Augustin-Normand, Jean-Etienne Dubois, Ecurie Hunter Valley, Haras d'Etreham, Ecurie Billon, Ecurie Elag, Chappet, and Hubert Guy, the 2023 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe third is poised for a GI Breeders' Cup Turf bid at Santa Anita in less than a month, having exited the Arc in good order. His record stands at 12-3-2-1 and $1,327,473 in earnings.

Haras d'Etreham's Nicolas de Chambure said, “Selected by Hubert Guy at the breeze-up sales in America, Onesto has always shown great speed for a Classic horse. He possesses a most remarkable pedigree, which is why we acquired him as a 2-year-old. He was a magnificent colt and has become a very handsome horse with the conformation of a miler and a strong physique. Our hopes of seeing him becoming a stallion prospect have been realised thanks to his high-class performances at the top level. In addition to his natural speed, he boasts a rare capacity of acceleration and the mentality of a warrior.”

The 185,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling turned $535,000 OBS Spring Sale 2-year-old is out of the unraced mare Onshore. She is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Jet Away (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), while her Kahyasi (Ire) dam Kalima (GB) is a full-sister to the tremendously influential blue hen Hasili (Ire) and her brood of top-level winners.

“His racing career has been a wonderful adventure alongside a group of enthusiastic associates and we are delighted to welcome Onesto to stud as he represents a unique opportunity for us, and a first-rate profile for French breeders and the French stallion ranks,” Chambure added.

A syndicate will be created for Onesto's stallion career, with some shares available. His stud fee will be announced in due course.

After his strong third in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Sunday, the connections of Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) were thinking Breeders' Cup, and now QIPCO Champions Day is also on the table as long as the ground isn't too soft, trainer Fabrice Chappet revealed on Thursday.

Raced by Gerard Augustin-Normand, the 4-year-old colt won the G1 Grand Prix de Paris last year and was also second in the G1 Champion S. during a campaign that took him from France, to Ireland and Japan. He returned this term with a fourth in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois this August and a seventh in the G1 Irish Champion S. in September prior to his good run at ParisLongchamp. His target is the G1 QIPCO Champion S.

Chappet said, “It depends on the ground. We are keeping an eye on the British Champion in case the ground will be suitable, good or good to soft. He would not go if it's softer than that, otherwise he will go to the Breeders' Cup.

“At this moment we are going for one of the two [Ascot or Breeders' Cup] and next year he is going to stud.”

Reprising his winning performance in Deauville's G3 Prix Djebel in April, Hisaaki Saito's Good Guess (GB) (Kodiac {GB}–Zykina {GB}, by Pivotal {GB}) upset some big names with no hint of fluke as he powered to success over the same seven-furlong trip in Sunday's G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat. Sent off at 24-1 having failed to further his claims as an elite runner when sixth in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and second in the G3 Prix Paul de Moussac, the Fabrice Chappet-trained grandson of Cheveley Park's champion Russian Rhythm (Kingmambo) bided his time early under cover among the main group.

Unleashed by Stephane Pasquier to cut down the long-time leader Sauterne (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) approaching the furlong marker, he drew away to beat that filly by three lengths, with the same margin back to his Paul de Moussac conqueror Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great) in third. The 7-10 favourite Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) proved a major disappointment, failing to land a blow and finishing a tame seventh as the 2000 Guineas form surprisingly unravelled in spectacular fashion.

“I love this horse,” Pasquier said. “He was good in the Djebel, but he was still immature physically and needed time to mature and grow into himself. The pace was fast which suited me and although I wanted to ride him closer to the pace, he was slow from the gates and in the end I had plenty of time to pick my position. He can shorten up or go further, it doesn't matter to him. He's a genuine group one horse.”

40/1 shock!

Kept to sprint trips at two, Good Guess was successful on his first two starts at Chantilly before finishing ninth and third on his next starts in this track's G3 Prix de Cabourg in August and Listed Prix Zeddaan in October. There was nothing in the form of the Djebel–where he got the better of Breizh Sky–that suggested he was top-drawer material upped to this trip for the first time and after his uninspiring Poulains effort he was behind Breizh Sky in the Paul de Moussac with no obvious excuse other than he was giving that rival two pounds.

Fabrice Chappet was not surprised by the outcome and said, “He's always been a good horse who we have liked for a long time. He won the Djebel nicely, missed the break in the Poulains and last time there was no pace which he really needs. That happened for him today and now he'll probably come back here in August for either the Maurice de Gheest or Jacques le Marois.”

The G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches third Sauterne, whose only poor run had come in the course-and-distance G3 Prix Imprudence, recorded a career-best with another heart-on-her-sleeve performance. After killing off the main British and Irish contingent in Chaldean, Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) who all followed her in the five-strong separate group up the centre, she lost out only to the winner who had raced away from her.

Sauterne's trainer Patrice Cottier, who had enjoyed a red-letter day at Saint-Cloud on Saturday as Horizon Dore (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}) captured the G2 Prix Eugene Adam, paid tribute to the Marseille-based teak-tough filly who was having her ninth start since debuting in late November. “I'm delighted with the performance–she never runs a bad race and has been so consistent. She's been travelling a lot back and forth, so we'll see how she is after this before deciding on where she goes next.”

Alessandro Botti said of Breizh Sky, “Unfortunately, he was a little too far back and had too much ground to make up, but all things considered put in another excellent performance.”

Pedigree Notes

Good Guess, who was a 420,000gns purchase from the Cheveley Park Stud draft by Chauvigny Global Equine at the 2021 Book 1 Sale, is a half-brother to the operation's Spangled (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) who was also at her best over this trip when winning the G3 Sceptre S. He is currently the last known foal out of the dam Zykina (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who also produced the listed-placed sprinter Jumira Bridge (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and is a daughter of the aforementioned G1 1000 Guineas, G1 Coronation S., G1 Nassau S. and G1 Lockinge S. heroine Russian Rhythm.

That Cheveley Park luminary's listed-placed Safina (GB) was also by Pivotal and is in turn responsible for last year's G3 Atalanta S. scorer Potapova (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the G3 Fred Darling S. winner Marenko (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). Russian Rhythm is also the second dam of Pivotal's G3 Princess Elizabeth S. winner Bashkirova (GB) and the fellow group 3 scorer Zonderland (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}). This is the family of the G1 Irish Oaks winner Alydaress (Alydar), the G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine and excellent producer Park Appeal (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}) with her renowned son Cape Cross (Ire), and of the G1 1000 Guineas-winning champion Shadayid (Shadeed).

Providing another boost to TDN Rising Star Pensee Du Jour (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), Haras de Saint-Julien and Regula Vannod's Crown Princesse (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}–Lovemedo {Fr}, by Zafeen {Fr}) stepped up on two prior efforts to capture Friday's G3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud. Four-lengths second to that Fabre giant on debut over 9 1/2 furlongs on Chantilly's Polytrack in February, the Fabrice Chappet-trained homebred went back to the same track, trip and surface to break her maiden last month and entered this 10 1/2-furlong Prix de Diane pointer only as a lukewarm 11-1 shot.

Anchored with one behind early by Ioritz Mendizabal, the chestnut had to wait for room at the top of the straight as the eventual runner-up Elusive Princess (Fr) (Martinborough {Jpn}) ran into a dead end on the rail. In the open in time to get to the front approaching the furlong pole, she stayed on strongly to score by half a length from the unlucky second, with 3/4 of a length back to the long-time leader Heartache Tonight (Fr) (Recorder {GB}) in third.

“You can't really fault this filly since her debut when she was beaten by one with great potential, as she has since proven,” Chappet said. “We will enjoy that, see how she comes out of the race and take it day by day before deciding on her next race. She is not in the [G1 Prix] Saint-Alary, not in the Diane. We shall see.”

Pedigree Notes

Crown Princesse's dam Lovemedo, who was runner-up in the Listed Prix la Sorellina, is a half-sister to the Listed Prix de Bagatelle winner Mary's Precedent (Fr) (Storming Home {GB}) who produced another Sorellina runner-up in Mary's France (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}). Lovemedo's 2-year-old filly by Meshaheer is named Love Her (Fr).

Fabrice Chappet has already bagged one Classic trial this season and, weather permitting, has another two chances of group-race success this weekend with Fortune (Fr) (De Treville {GB}) entered in Sunday's G3 Prix Noailles and Paz (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the G3 Prix de la Grotte.

On April 6, Good Guess (GB) (Kodiac {Fr}) became the trainer's second winner of the G3 Prix Djebel. The first, Dice Roll (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), went on to run third in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, with that race now the target for Hisaaki Saito's colt, who is a grandson of Cheveley Park Stud's 1,000 Guineas heroine and four-time Group 1 winner Russian Rhythm (Kingmambo)

“He's come out of the race perfectly,” says Chappet of Good Guess, who has been one of the trainer's favourites since his arrival in the yard from Tattersalls, where he was plucked from Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale for 420,000gns by Sebastien Desmontils on behalf of the Japanese owner.

“The good thing about French racing is that it's not run at a crazy pace so horses usually come out of their races better that way. Good Guess was a nice two-year-old and he had a good winter, so all is well so far.”

The current stable star at Chappet's Chantilly stable is Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), whose 2022 season included victory in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris and G2 Prix Greffulhe as well as splitting Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}) when second in the G1 Irish Champion S.

“He should go to the Prix Ganay first, all being well,” says the trainer of the four-year-old, who runs in the colours of Gerard Augustin-Normand. “There are some good horses in the race but there aren't many options at this time of the year for Group 1 horses in France. But he had a good winter and I'm very happy with him.

“He had a two-month break at the farm after the Japan Cup. He'll go to the Ganay first and we'll consider the options in Groups 1s in Europe over 2,000m and 2,400m in the first half of the year. We may look at travelling him farther afield in the second part of the season.”

Looking ahead to Sunday, Chappet says of his two runners aiming to prove their Classic potential, “Fortune goes for the Prix Noailles and he's two-for-two. It's his first race of the year but he won twice last year. Paz is two-for-two as well and is a very nice Siyouni filly. It's a bit ground dependent so we will wait to see how much rain they have at Longchamp.”

Chappet tasted Classic success for the first time when Precieuse (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) took the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches for Brendan and Anne-Marie Hayes in 2017 before being sold to Peter Brant to continue her career with Chad Brown in America. Since then, Speak Of The Devil (Fr) and Mageva (Fr), both daughters of Wootton Bassett (GB), have been placed in the French Guineas, as well as the aforementioned Dice Roll.

There was also reflected glory to be had when Chappet's former resident Gold Trip (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}), whom he trained to win the G2 Prix Greffulhe two years before Onesto, won the Melbourne Cup for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace last November.

At this time of year, however, life in a training yard is all about looking forward rather than reflecting on the past, and Chappet highlighted to TDN a few members of his juvenile team of 2023 to keep an eye on as summer rolls on.

“We'll have our first two-year-old runners probably at the end of May,” he says.

“One of my first two-year-olds to run will be a filly called Zeplacetobe (Fr). She's a daughter of Iffraaj (GB) out of Zendia (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and she shows speed, so she could be the first one to go.”

Zeplacetobe is owned in partnership by Ecurie Hunter Valley and Jean-Etienne Dubois, both of whom are involved in the ownership of Onesto. Dubois and his partners are also to be found behind another new recruit to the stable who has just arrived from Florida and the OBS March Sale.

The colt by Spendthrift Farm's first-season sire Omaha Beach is out of the unraced Two Sugars (Scat Daddy) and was bought by Hubert Guy for $285,000. This is a path that has been taken before with some success as, although Onesto owns a markedly European pedigree, he was bred by the American-based Diamond Creek Farm and, when he failed to reach his reserve when offered as a yearling at Tattersalls, he was exported to the States and sold at Ocala for $535,000 to Guy.

Chappet says of the Omaha Beach colt, “We're quite excited about him. He's a nice colt and looks quite an early type, quite fast.”

He adds, “We didn't use to pay close attention to the breeze-ups in America but then we got Onesto from Ocala so we've been taking another look.”

In regard to the breeze-up sector in general, Chappet continues, “We used to say that it wasn't the best school for French racing because we like the horses to be nice and relaxed going to the races but when you look at the stats, and they are very good stats, and with horses coming through that are showing such promise it has become a much bigger thing.

“When you buy a yearling you don't know how fast he's going to be able to go, so when they have been through this prep and have come through the breeze and have done a good time, then it is an advantage for a trainer because they have already done a good amount of work and shown that they can handle it. It may not always be the best preparation for French racing but at the same time I think there are also some advantages to the breeze-ups.”

Another juvenile colt who has taken the trainer's eye at this stage is one whose family has had significant updates in the last month courtesy of his dual Group 1-winning half-brother Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}).

“He's not named yet but he is by Invincible Spirit (Ire) out of Mondelice (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}),” Chappet says. “He was bought at Tattersalls and he's a nice sort who should run this summer. He already shows some promise.”

The colt represents a first horse in the Chappet yard for Barbara Banke of Stonestreet Stable, who bought the colt through Ben McElroy for 220,000gns.

Craig Bernick is another American owner now with Chappet, and he has two horses in training there including the juvenile La Landonne (Ire), a No Nay Never half-sister to Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) owned in partnership with Haras d'Etreham. The same duo also owns Lady Glenham (Ire), a Zoffany (Ire) half-sister to Australian Group 1 winner and Widden Stud stallion Russian Camelot (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).

The team at Haras d'Etreham will no doubt be pleased to hear the feedback from the trainer on a quartet of colts in his stable by the farm's first-season sire City Light (Fr), a son of Siyouni (Fr).

“I have four colts by City Light which are nice and I am quite happy with them,” he says.

He also singles out a colt who has already been optimistically named Winning Formula (Ire). The son of Exceed And Excel (Aus) was bred by Shadwell and sold as a yearling for 350,000gns by Tally-Ho Stud, who bought him as a foal at Goffs for €130,000.

“He also came from Tattersalls and he is for the same owner as Good Guess, Hisaaki Saito,” Chappet notes. “He's another one I like for this summer. Mr Saito is a great supporter and he definitely deserves a nice horse.”

Helped by the stands rail which is always a boon on the straight track at Deauville, Hisaaki Saito's Good Guess (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) sprang a minor upset in Thursday's G3 Prix Djebel. Trying seven furlongs for the first time, having last been seen finishing third in the Listed Prix Zeddaan here in October, the Fabrice Chappet-trained bay followed the early leader Belbek (Fr) (Showcasing {GB}) with Stephane Pasquier holding back for the inevitable sprint. Finding an ideal seam up the fence as TDN Rising Star Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great) challenged out wide, the 9-1 shot forged ahead inside the last 50 metres to score by half a length, with Belbek eventually a length away in third.

Successful on his first two starts over sprint trips at Chantilly in the summer, Good Guess had also been ninth when Belbek was fifth behind The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the G3 Prix de Cabourg here in August. The next furlong of the Poule d'Essai des Poulains may be beyond him, but Chappet is happy that it is within his compass. “It all went wrong in the Prix de Cabourg,” he said. “After a good break, he ran a good race in the Prix Zeddaan but that was over six which was too short and reflecting on that I think it was a mistake to run him that short again. He had a nice trip today and quickened well–very importantly, he proved that he should have no trouble staying a mile and his intended next start is in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains.”

Alessandro Botti is also eyeing the ParisLongchamp Classic with Breizh Sky. “I am slightly disappointed as I think we could have won this race, we beat the favourite but the lack of pace hurt us,” he said. “Anyway, he will be a group winner one day–he had improved a lot mentally from last year and he will come on for the run. We lost just a battle and we will be back in the Poule d'Essai.”

Pedigree Notes
Good Guess, who was a 420,000gns purchase from the Cheveley Park Stud draft by Chauvigny Global Equine at the 2021 Book 1 Sale, is a half-brother to the operation's smart Spangled (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) who captured the seven-furlong G3 Sceptre S. and to the listed-placed sprinter Jumira Bridge (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). He is currently the last known foal out of the dam Zykina (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), a daughter of the brilliant Russian Rhythm (Kingmambo).

Heroine of the G1 1000 Guineas, G1 Coronation S., G1 Nassau S. and G1 Lockinge S. and arguably the best to have raced in the red, white and blue of the Thompsons, Russian Rhythm's sole black-type performer was Pivotal's listed-placed Safina (GB), who is in turn responsible for last year's G3 Atalanta S. scorer Potapova (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the G3 Fred Darling S. winner Marenko (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). This family of Cape Cross (Ire) also includes the group winners Zonderland (GB) and Positive (GB) by Dutch Art (GB) and Pivotal's Bashkirova (GB) who took last year's G3 Princess Elizabeth S.

'TDN Rising Star' Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), winner earlier this year of the G1 Grand Prix de Paris and narrowly runner-up to Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in the G1 Irish Champion S., is set to make his final appearance of the season in the G1 Japan Cup at Toyko Racecourse. Onesto was last seen finishing ninth behind Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in a heavy-turf renewal of the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Oct. 2.

The 3-year-old will be part of a three-pronged challenge from France to also include Simca Mille (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), just beaten in the Grand Prix de Paris and subsequent winner of the G2 Prix Niel on Arc Trial day Sept. 11; and Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), a meritorious five-lengths' fifth to Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in last year's Japan Cup whose major victory this year came in the G3 Prix Allez France Longines in May. Grand Glory is then slated for a return to the Arqana December Sale, where she sold for €2.5 million in 2021.

“It's a nice race to contest,” trainer Fabrice Chappet told Paris Turf. “The horse has returned from an Arc de Triomphe that was run in the circumstances that we all know. We will see him again on…ground that he appreciates. The race is late in the season, but he had a good break after the Arc. Next year, he won't come back until May, so it's possible to go there and try it.”

Fabrice Chappet is set to have his first runner in Ireland and will send the G1 Grand Prix de Paris winner Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) to the G1 Royal Bahrain Irish Champion S. on September 10.

The first running of the race in 1976 was won by the Francois Boutin-trained Malacate, and the Irish Champion S last went to a French runner when Almanzor (Fr) won in 2016 en route to becoming European champion three-year-old.

Onesto, also three, landed the G2 Prix Greffuhle in May before running fifth behind Vadeni (Fr) from a difficult draw in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club.

“He has won over a mile and a half but he showed in the Prix du Jockey Club that he has enough speed to be going against the best horses over a mile and a quarter,” Fabrice Chappet told TDN in Deauville. “He stays, but not only that, he has a great turn of foot and I am sure he's as good over a mile and a quarter as he is over a mile and a half.”

Later in the season, the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe remains on the agenda for Onesto, who now runs in the colours of Almanzor's part-owner Gerard Augustin-Normand.

“It is three weeks to the Arc [after the Irish Champion] and that's perfect,” Chappet noted. “I've never raced in Ireland and this is a prestigious race to be going for.”

Chappet is enjoying a decent season, with stable star Onesto backed up by the likes of Listed winner and Group 3-placed Machete (Fr) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) and dual juvenile winner Gain It (Fr) (De Treville {GB}), who, like Onesto, was awarded a TDN Rising Star. He is currently in seventh position in the French trainers' ranks having sent out significantly fewer runners than those above him in the table.
