Orb, the winner of the 2013 Kentucky Derby, has been purchased by a group of Uruguayan breeders and he will relocate to that country for the upcoming Southern Hemisphere breeding season.

The 11-year-old son of Malibu Moon will stand at Haras Cuatro Piedras, a farm owned by Uruguayan Breeders Association president Pablo Salomone. He entered stud at Claiborne Farm in 2014.

From five crops of racing age, Orb has sired 155 winners for combined progeny earnings of more than $10.9 million. His runners of note include Grade 1 winner Sippican Harbor and O Besos, who is currently pointing towards this year's Kentucky Derby after finishing third in the G2 Louisiana Derby.

“Orb was a wonderful horse with a great pedigree and look about him,” said trainer Shug McGaughey, who conditioned the horse for owners Stuart Janney and Phipps Stable. “He gave me many thrills, the ultimate one being his win in the Kentucky Derby. I am sure he will do very well as a stallion in his new home.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Orb won five of 12 starts during his racing career, for earnings of $2,612,516. He became a top threat on the 2013 Triple Crown trail after winning the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes and the G1 Florida Derby, before winning the Kentucky Derby by 2 1/2 lengths as the post time favorite. He also finished third in the Belmont Stakes and the G1 Travers Stakes.

The deal was brokered by Marette Farrell and Sebastian Angelillo along with David Seguias.

“They are thrilled to secure a Kentucky Derby winner for Uruguay from Ruffian's family,” Farrell said. “This is a key international Phipps pedigree loaded with strong South American connections like Uruguayan champion 2- and 3-year-old filly Algecira Fever, and multiple G1 winner Siempre En Mi Mente, along with Suggestive Boy who was a three-time G1 winner in Argentina and then won the G1 Frank Kilroy Mile in the U.S. We wish him all the best and firmly believe he will establish himself as the top stallion down there.”

Like many U.S. stallions who have sold to South American breeding programs in recent years, Orb was purchased by a sizable group of Uruguayan breeders. The coalition that secured Orb includes Haras Bettina, Cuatro Piedras, Don Alfredo, Don Camilo, Don Bebe, Don Juca, El Arbolito, Entrevero, La Concordia, La Coluda, La Pomme, Los Apamates, Los Seis, Mocambú, Musa, Nijú (Brasil), San Miguel Queguay, Santa Delfina de la Candelaria, Santa María de Juncal, Sin Nombre, Stud Tinto y Celeste, Tsimbalar, Vaccaro (Brasil) and Viejo Molino.

“With Orb, for the first time, there is a very well-balanced union in which no partner exceeds 10 percent (ownership),” Angelillo said. “We believe that this is a first step on a path that definitely leads in the right direction.”

Orb will join a stallion roster at Haras Cuatro Piedras that also includes Hall of Famer and 2006 Horse of the Year Invasor. The farm has previously housed shuttle stallions including Smarty Jones, Real Quiet, and Trinniberg.

Synchrony, a six-time graded stakes winner, will begin his stallion career at Haras Cima in Brazil, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

The 7-year-old Tapit horse was retired in September after sustaining a minor injury. Racing as a homebred for Pin Oak Stud, under the shedrow of trainer Michael Stidham, Synchrony won nine of 29 career starts and earned $956,652.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

He won two editions of the Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap, and he notched additional victories in the G2 Muniz Memorial Handicap and King Edward Stakes, as well as the G3 Red Bank Stakes and Oceanport Stakes. Synchrony also placed in eight other graded stakes races, including the G1 Turf Classic Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Synchrony is out of Pin Oak homebred Brownie Points. A daughter of Forest Wildcat, Brownie Points was a graded stakes winner of eight black type stakes, earning over $950,000. Her best performances included a victory in the G3 Ouija Board Distaff Handicap and a runner-up finish in the G1 Apple Blossom Handicap to Horse of the Year Zenyatta.

In addition to Synchrony, Brownie Points is the dam of graded stakes winner Chocolate Kisses as well as stakes winner Point System.

Synchrony is the second son of Tapit to be exported to Brazil in 2020 to launch his stallion career, following in the footsteps of classic-placed Hofburg.

Trained by Ian Wilkes on behalf of famed breeder Marylou Whitney, Bird Song won five races, including the Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes at Churchill Downs. That gate-to-wire victory over Honorable Duty, Noble Bird, and American Freedom capped an excellent 4-year-old campaign that also saw him win the G3 Fred W. Hooper Stakes at Gulfstream Park and run placed in the G3 Hal's Hope and Ben Ali Stakes.

Bird Song boasts a pedigree out of the top drawer as a son of Marylou Whitney's champion Kentucky Oaks heroine Bird Town. In turn, that daughter of Cape Town is a half-sister to Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone, subsequently a classic-producing sire.

Hofburg, a classic-placed stakes winner, will begin his stud career at Haras Santa Maria de Araras in Brazil, according to the South American racing publication Turf Diario.

The 5-year-old son of Tapit raced as a homebred for Juddmonte Farms, and was trained by Bill Mott, winning three of 11 starts for earnings of $554,300.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

After breaking his maiden in his 3-year-old debit, Hofburg tested the Grade 1 Florida Derby, where he finished second to Audible. This qualified him for the 2018 Kentucky Derby, where he gained ground in the stretch after a rough trip to finish seventh behind eventual Triple Crown winner Justify.

Hofburg's gaining trip in the Derby, paired with Tapit's growing tradition of success in the Belmont Stakes, led the colt to go off as the second choice in the third leg of the Triple Crown, where he ultimately finished third. He came back a month later to win the Curlin Stakes at Saratoga, then ran fourth in the G1 Pennsylvania Derby.

The horse racing sparingly after his 3-year-old season, winning a Saratoga allowance optional claiming race in his lone start at four, then going unplaced in a pair of graded stakes earlier this year.

Hofburg is out of the placed Touch Gold mare Soothing Touch, making him a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Emollient and Grade 2-placed stakes winner Courtier.

Other notable North American horses that have resided at Haras Santa Maria de Araras include Put It Back – the sire of Brazilian Triple Crown winner and current Calumet Farm stallion Bal a Bali – and Wild Event.

Commissioner, a Grade 2 winner who was narrowly defeated in the 2014 Belmont Stakes, has been sold to Prince Saud bin Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud and will be relocated to Saudi Arabia, BloodHorse reports.

The 9-year-old son of A.P. Indy previously stood at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky., where he was advertised for a fee of $7,500. His first foals are 3-year-olds of 2020, led by Grade 3 winner Island Commish and Grade 2-placed Powerfulattraction.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Commissioner won five of 15 starts during his on-track career as a homebred for WinStar, earning $962,237. He entered the mix among the nation's top 3-year-olds in 2014 with a third-place effort in the G3 Sunland Derby. Two starts later, he finished second in the G2 Peter Pan Stakes, then ran a heartbreaking head behind Tonalist in the Belmont Stakes after leading at every point of call prior to the finish.

The colt came back at four to win the G3 Skip Away Stakes and Pimlico Special Stakes. He ended his career with a win in the G2 Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap.

Andrew Cary of Cary Bloodstock brokered the deal.
