The long reign of Karl Broberg as the top trainer at Evangeline Downs came to an end on Saturday night. Capping off the season with three victories on the closing night card, Eduardo Ramirez drew off to capture his first training title. Ramirez, a former assistant in the Broberg brigade, saddled 44 winners on the season. Winning at a 31 percent clip, Ramirez finished the season five wins ahead of Broberg. The Ramirez barn tallied $541,682 in purse winnings for the meet. Karl Broberg runners did lead in that category, bringing in $624,546 for the meet.

The complete top 10 in the trainer standings were: Eduardo Ramirez (44 wins), Karl Broberg (39), Juan Larrosa (33), Scott Gelner (30), Allen Landry (26), Keith Bourgeois (23), Sam Breaux (21), Dale White, Sr. (20), Rylee Grudzien (19) and Ron Faucheux (18). Of the trainers in the top ten, Bourgeois runners had the highest strike rates with 34 percent winners and 72 percent on the board from his 68 total starters.

Jimmy Johnson's Red Rose Racing fended off the challenge of End Zone Athletics, Inc. to bring home the title in the owner's race. Red Rose Racing starters won 30 races from 88 starts, while finishing second 10 times and third 10 times, for a 34 percent winning percentage and 57 percent in the money. End Zone Athletics, Inc. was active at the entry box with a meet leading 144 starters that tallied a second-best 28 winners. The End Zone Athletics, Inc. runners led in money won with $434,936 in earnings followed by Joe Alfredo Castillo with $361,925 and Red Rose Racing with $300,307.

The complete top 10 in the owner standing were: Red Rose Racing (30 wins), End Zone Athletics, Inc. (28), Joe Alfredo Castillo (19), Dale White, Sr. (16), Rylee Grudzien (15), Elite Thoroughbred Racing, LLC (12), Adriel Gonzalez (10), Whispering Oaks Farm, LLC (8), and a tie for ninth between George Santis and Sandy Badeaux with 7 wins apiece.

“The team at Fair Grounds continues to assess the extensive damage to the property as a result of the impact of Hurricane Ida,” track president Doug Shipley said in a statement to bloodhorse.com. “While there will be much necessary repair in preparation for our Thoroughbred racing season in November, we are most grateful that our Quarter Horse meet had been relocated this year and therefore there were no horses were on property.

“In the interest of safety, we were able to close operations and send our team members home. As you can imagine, with the current conditions and in the absence of power in the area, it may take some time to get an accurate understanding of the damage and to estimate a timeline for repair.”

Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, La. shut down on early Sunday morning, but did not sustain any damage as a result of the storm. Evangeline and Delta Downs, both owned by Boyd Gaming, are reported to be fully operational. Delta in Vinton, La. was outside the path of the storm.

The win was made more special as the victor was trained by longtime friend Glen Delahoussaye. Running for owner Charles Carlton, the gelded son of Shackleford, Reposado is out of the Two Punch mare Bronze Abe.

Melancon began his professional riding career at Delta Downs in 1984. His first victory came with his third career mount with Dash and Cash on February 9, 1984. His first victory over the original Evangeline Downs oval was astride Cajun Lawman on April 7 the same year.

A multiple graded stakes winning jockey, he piloted Bonapaw to a Grade 1 winning score in the 2002 Vosburgh at Belmont Park. Melancon claimed two editions of the $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot, first with Saber Cat in 2011 and then with Rise Up in 2013. His most recent graded-stakes score came in 2019 in the Lukas Classic Stakes at Churchill Downs with Mocito Rojo.

The native of Rayne, La. has ridden in over 31,900 races and his mounts have earned nearly $88 million in purse money. He recently passed Ramon Dominguez on the career wins list and the next rider to catch is Alex Solis with 5,035 wins.

He considers the 2004 Super Derby aboard Fantastic Cat his biggest win.

“It was a race I had dreamed about winning, and to do it twenty years into my career was pretty special,” he stated.

Several people have been integral in the storied career of Melancon.

“I have to thank my wife, Annette, for all of her support through the years. Manuel Robin was integral in giving me a chance to get started, and my agent Louis Coco has been a great partner for the past 25 years.”

The $70,000 Soiree is the first stakes on the card and tests a field of five 3-year-old fillies going one mile on the turf. The 8/5 morning line favorite Winning Romance is a recent stakes runner-up from the barn of W. Bret Calhoun. Cilla, a graded-stakes placed filly from the barn of Brett Brinkman, is the second choice at 9/5.

The $70,000 Cheval, for 3-year-olds at a mile on the turf, brings together a competitive field of 10 runners. Beauregard is one of three entrants riding multiple-race winning streaks into the contest. After losing his dam shortly after birth, the gritty gelding was raised by a nurse mare named Hope. He reeled off three straight victories at Will Rogers Downs and will run for his breeders Southern Legacy Thoroughbreds and trainer Karl Broberg. The morning line favorite Unanimously, a Steve Asmussen trainee, enters after facing a tough stakes field at Oaklawn Park in his last start.

A solid field of ten will contest the $70,000 Spring over the 5-1/2 furlong distance. This field has combined to produce 28 wins over the Evangeline Downs surface, and looks to be a fantastic wagering event. Monte Man drew the attention of the morning line maker as the 9-5 favorite, but defending champ Laughingsaintsong, and Bertie's Galaxy among others, should have a say in the outcome. Born Again George brings a resume with eight local wins to the affair, and Wild Bert is an ultra-consistent runner.

The $70,000 Turf Distaff at one mile on the turf for 3-year-olds and up, fillies and mares, is another competitive bunch. One could make a case for a handful to have been the morning line favorite, with that nod going to Net a Bear, listed at 9-5. The Allen Landry trainee will have the services of Tim Thornton, and must overcome an outside post draw. Net a Bear was a fast closing second in her last turf effort and will look to turn the tables on Offspring, who bested her on that day. Listed as the second choice at 5-2, Offspring has been absent from the races since that March event. Distractor Factor, runner-up in the Evangeline Downs Distaff, is another that should draw attention at the mutuel windows.

The winner of the Evangeline Downs Distaff, Snowball, leads the entries for the $70,000 Mademoiselle. The race for fillies and mares over 5-1/2 furlongs will attempt to display the versatility of the defending champ. Sam Breaux trains and Tim Thornton will be in the saddle. Southern Beauty brings a two-race winning streak into the race, and Saints N Muskets will try reverse her fortunes after being defeated in the Distaff three weeks ago.

The $70,000 Turf closes out the stakes action on the card with recent Classic winner Treys Midnite Moon listed as the morning line favorite. Tim Thornton will handle the reigns for trainer Corale 'Bunky' Richards in the one-mile race. A pair of the rivals trying to turn the tables from the result in the Classic are Grand Luwegee and Mageez. Trained by Gerard Perron and piloted by Diego Saenz, Grand Luwegee led until deep stretch in the Classic and should have his speed on display once again. Mageez, trained by Delmar Caldwell, will have Ashley Broussard in the irons after finishing a hard-charging third at 40-1 in the Classic.

The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association will be awarding two $1,000 scholarships during the evening. Students are encouraged to attend the races and enter the drawing, with the winners to be selected after the fifth race. First post time for the nine-race card Saturday will be 6:00pm Central Time. The Belmont Stakes card, and many other simulcast options, will provide plenty of action for wagering leading into Legends Night.

Evangeline Downs offers a one-mile dirt track and seven-furlong turf course. The state-of-the-art facility is a perfect venue for race fans to watch the action from the track apron or high above the track in the climate controlled, indoor clubhouse. Either way, the crowd is sure to be entertained.

Many familiar names will return to the track to compete this year at Evangeline Downs. Jockey Tim Thornton will look to repeat as leading rider after taking the crown in 2020 with 73 trips to the winner's circle. Thornton recently won his third consecutive riding title at Evangeline Downs' sister racetrack Delta Downs during their recently completed 2020-21 season.

Karl Broberg will be the odds-on favorite to capture another training title in Opelousas this year. During the 2020 meeting he led all trainers with 23 wins and his barn earned a season high $374,150. Broberg recently won his 10th straight training title at Delta Downs and is annually one of the top conditioners in the country. He led the nation in wins from 2014 – 2019 before finishing second to Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen in 2020.

Other prominent horsemen who are expected to compete at Evangeline this year include Ron Faucheux, who recently won the 2020-21 training title at Fair Grounds; Scott Gelner, who finished second in the standings to Broberg at Delta Downs this year; and Isai V. Gonzalez, who finished fifth in the recent Delta Downs standings and whose barn has been getting plenty of notoriety in recent years.

Evangeline Downs will offer several stakes races for local horsemen to take part in this year. The 14-race schedule features $820,000 in total purse money with the richest stakes program of the season set for Saturday, June 5 when the track hosts another edition of Louisiana Legends Night. The action-packed program will include six added-money events highlighted by the $60,000 Chaval Stakes for 3-year-olds and the $60,000 Louisiana Legends Turf for older horse competing at 1-1/16 miles on the grass.

The stakes schedule will wrap up on closing weekend of the season, Friday, September 17 and Saturday, September 18 with two divisions of the 'Shine' Young Futurity. Last year's filly division was won by Larry Romero and Ron Faucheux's Mirabeau and the colts and geldings division was taken by Allen Landry's Chu Chu's Legacy.

Tuel's race calling experience began in 2004 at Eureka Downs in Kansas, where he called both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. Over the years he has also called races in his home state of Nebraska at FairPlay Park, Lincoln Race Course and Atokad Park.

Tuel will also have the responsibility of handicapping each program at Evangeline Downs while also hosting the track's daily simulcast show. His experience in front of the camera along with a lifetime of handicapping horse races will provide fans with valuable insights and plenty of winning picks nightly. From 2010 – 2012 he served as paddock host and handicapper at Lincoln Race Course while working with Chamberlain, who was the announcer at that time.

Thornton and runner-up Diego Saenz were the only riders whose mounts earned in excess of one million dollars in purse money with Thornton's horses picking up $1,268,850 and Saenz's earning $1,050,461.

It was a stellar season for Dale White, Sr. at Evangeline Downs. White not only finished in the top five in the training standings, he also managed to finish the meet as the leading owner with 14 victories from 84 starts, ending up four wins ahead of a tie for second between Elite Thoroughbred Racing LLC and End Zone Athletics, Inc. White also added 13 seconds and 17 thirds for an in-the-money percentage of 52% for his runners. His horses earned $248,180 in purses, which was also led the standings.

The first stakes race of the night will be the $60,000 Cheval for 3-year-olds at one mile. The field of six is led by the 8-5 morning-line favorite, Relentless Dancer. The colt has won just one stakes race in his brief career, the $100,000 Louisiana Legacy at Delta Downs, but he also finished fourth in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park behind Grade 1 Belmont Stakes winner, Tiz The Law. Additionally, he ran fifth in the Unbridled Stakes at Gulfstream behind the Belmont runner-up, Dr. Post. Gerard Melancon will have the ride on Relentless Dancer for trainer Mike Maker.

The most competitive stakes race on the program could be the $60,000 Mademoiselle at 5-1/2 furlongs for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up. A field of 10 will go to the post with Our Lost Love as a lukewarm 3-1 morning-line favorite. She has won two stakes races in her last three performances, the $100,000-added Louisiana Futurity at Fair Grounds on December 29 and the $76,300 Take Charge Brandi at Delta Downs on February 28. Carlos Lozada will be in the saddle on Saturday night for trainer Joey Foster.

The $60,000 Turf at one mile on the turf for 3-year-olds and up features a very strong top pair of favorites with Shang at 5-2 and Mageez at 7-2 on the morning-line. Shang is a Steve Asmussen-trained colt that won the 2019 Cheval as a 3-year-old at Evangeline Downs. He has won just one of five races since that victory, but also has been the runner-up in the $250,000 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows and the $60,000 Dixie Poker Ace Stakes at Fair Grounds. Mageez is the defending champion in the Louisiana Legends Turf and has won twice more since that victory, including last time out in an Allowance/Optional Claiming race at Evangeline Downs on June 10.

The story of the $60,000 Sprint is the attempt at a three-peat in the race for the 5-2 morning-line favorite, Monte Man. The 7-year-old gelding drew the rail in a field of nine for the 5-1/2 furlongs race for 3-year-olds and up. Gerard Melancon will be in the saddle for trainer Ron Faucheux on Saturday night, as he has been for the two preceding Sprint wins for Monte Man. Monte Man has already won two of four starts in 2020, including the $75,000 Costa Rising Stakes at Fair Grounds on March 21.

The $60,000 Soiree for 3-year-old fillies at one mile features a field of eight headlined by the 8-5 morning-line favorite, Vacherie Girl. She has won three of five lifetime starts, including two stakes at Fair Grounds, the $100,000 Lassie on Louisiana Champions Day on December 14 and the $75,000 Crescent City Oaks on March 21. Joel Dominguez will be in the saddle for trainer Steve Asmussen on Saturday night.

Evangeline Downs will also be presenting exciting food options on Louisiana Legends Night with three food trucks available in the patio area near the saddling paddock. Fans can get sno-cones from Kona Ice, barbecue food from Ohh Taste and See and Cajun delicacies from Cest Bon Manger. Tamales Cinco de Mayo will also be serving authentic Mexican cuisine from the patio counter and Mojo's Sports Bar will be open on Saturday night, where fans can not only order drinks, but also place wagers and watch the races.
