The four-day Arqana Vente d'Elevage concluded on Tuesday, with four fillies and mares making €1 million or more, and 668 horses (77%) marked as sold for a gross of €47,135,000.

Overall, the average was down 8% to €70,561, however, the median rose to €20,000, an increase of 16% off of 2022's mark. The sale was topped by Group 1 winner Place Du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) at €4.025 million from leading buyer Portofino Bloodstock.

Taking just Tuesday's trade into account, 109 lots sold (79%) for a gross of €581,500. The day's average was down 5% to €5,335, while the median increased by 14% to €4,000.

Tuesday's top lot was lot 919, the Kingman (GB) mare Crispina (GB). From the family of stallions Cityscape (GB) and Bated Breath (GB), the Haras d'Annebault-consigned 6-year-old was sold in foal to G1 Deutsches Derby hero Laccario (Ger) and brought €52,000 from SARL Trotting Bloodstock.

A named filly foal, Laskaria (Fr) (Laccario {Ger}), was the day's dearest foal, changing hands for €25,000 from the draft of Haras d'Annebault. Richard Venn Bloodstock bought the April foal on behalf of Paola Beacco Bd.

La Motteraye Consignment was the leading vendor, offering 39 mares, fillies and foals for a gross of €4,971,000, including Channel (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) for €1.2 million.

Arqana President Eric Hoyeau and Executive Director Freddy Powell said, “In a record-breaking year, the 2023 edition of the Vente d'Élevage has concluded with very good results. With four fillies and mares making over €1 million, including an historic top price of over €4 million, turnover from the December sale exceeded €45 million for the second time. Driven by buyers from all over Europe, as well as from the United States, Australia, Japan, India, Turkey and France, demand remained buoyant. The middle market segment also remained strong, with a high level of activity both internationally and domestically. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our vendors, as well as the buyers who once again turned out in force. We would also like to thank all our teams, in the yards, the stud farms and in the offices, for their involvement during this great marathon that is the Vente d'Elevage. As this marks the end of the sales year, we wish everyone a very happy holiday season.”

Eric Hoyeau, President of Arqana added, “When Coolmore informed us of their wish to sell a covering to Camelot for the benefit of an organisation working in Turkey to help those affected by the earthquakes, we immediately agreed to include it as a Wild Card in our February sale and to promote it.”

For the second straight year, the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale will be staged at Goffs UK's Doncaster sales complex in light of coronavirus-inflicted travel restrictions. The sale was originally slated for Deauville on May 13 and 14, and will now take place at Doncaster on May 28, with the breeze show on May 26.

The decision to move the sale was prompted by the fact that 80% of the 2-year-olds catalogued are based in Ireland, and thus the personnel accompanying them to France would have had to undertake a strict two-week hotel quarantine. As has become customary since the pandemic began more than a year ago, telephone and internet bidding will also be available.

Arqana President Eric Hoyeau said, “First of all, we would like to acknowledge the flexibility and understanding of all our vendors in this situation. We were looking forward to a return of the Breeze Up to Deauville but in the current context and after having looked at all the possible solutions, the organisation of the sale at Doncaster will be much simpler for a large majority of them. We would also like to thank Goffs, whose entire UK team has adapted to accommodate our sale. As with last year, we will do everything possible to welcome everyone in the best possible conditions. We will also continue to offer many opportunities for buyers to bid who could not make the trip. The entire Arqana team remains at the disposal of both buyers and vendors to answer any questions and to help with their organisation.”

Agathe Capdepon has been promoted to Arqana Communication Director, the sales company announced on Tuesday.

Capdepon began in the company's communication department in 2016. She holds degrees in literature and communication and is a qualified riding instructor. In addition, Capdepon, who previously worked at a news agency, is taking over from Alix Choppin, who will continue to collaborate with Arqana on a free-lance basis, organizing events to promote racehorse ownership in business circles. Megan Martins, in charge of digital communication, and Pauline Ritter, responsible for press relations and advertising, also work on the Arqana communications team.

“It is very much a seamless transition,” said Arqana CEO Eric Hoyeau. “We opted to promote internal resources as we are lucky to have a competent, creative and complementary team ready to take up all the required tasks. Agathe has been working consistently hard for the past four year and we are delighted to appoint her as head of communication.”

Added Agathe Capdepon, “I wish to thank Alix, alongside whom I have been learning the ropes during my first four years on the communication team, as well as Eric Hoyeau and Freddy Powell for their confidence. I am thrilled to be given this opportunity with the support of a skillful, dynamic and cohesive team.”

Following the news that French President Emmanuel Macron is tightening COVID-19 restrictions, Arqana announced they are considering several options for their remaining 2020 sales. A decision on new sale dates and formats will be made early next week.

“We spoke with the local authorities this morning and received confirmation that the upcoming sales will have to follow a different organization from the one in place at the recent October Yearling Sale,” said Arqana CEO Eric Hoyeau. “Several alternative options remain on the table and we are working hard to review them and come up with a solution that would allow Arqana to serve its purpose which is to act as a marketplace for horses. We will be in a position to make a decision early next week following further discussion with local authorities.”

DEAUVILLE, France—A numerically enhanced Arqana October Sale drew to a close in Deauville on Friday with encouraging figures in a year which cannot shake off the spectre of Covid-19. As 9pm curfews are about to be reinstated across the regions of France where the virus is spreading most quickly, the curtain has come down just in time on the major yearling sales of the season. What the situation will be come the breeding stock sales is anyone’s guess but, for now, Arqana has managed to stage its October Sale in its usual slot, with the number of yearlings and sessions increased to accommodate those horses which would originally have been earmarked for the Osarus September Sale in La Teste de Buch, which wasn’t able to be staged in situ this year.

The October Sale in Deauville has been conducted over four days in the recent past and, as a guide only rather than for a direct comparison, 414 yearlings were sold in last year’s edition for a total of €17,465,500 at an average of €40,959.

Twelve months on and the five days of trade brought turnover of €18,474,000 for 578 horses sold, at a consistently encouraging daily clearance rate about 80%, which levelled out to 82% for the week, with an average of €31,249 and median of €20,000. The final day boasted the strongest clearance of all at 84%, with an aggregate of €1,142,500 from 83 horses sold at an average of €13,765 and median of €12,000.

The top lot of the final session of the Arqana October Sale will be joining trainer Philippe Decouz who, with agent Laurent Benoit of Broadhurst agency, bought the Dark Angel (Ire) colt for €70,000 on behalf of footballer Antoine Griezmann, who already has 11 horses in training with Decouz.

Lot 685 was the final lot through the ring for Lady O’Reilly’s Haras de la Louivere, and is out of the winning Lawman (Fr) mare Larose (GB), a half-sister to the listed Prix Finlande winner Monroe Bay (GB) (Makfi {GB}).

Commenting on the week’s business in Deauville, Arqana’s President Eric Hoyeau and Executive Director Freddy Powell said in a joint statement, “We are immensely grateful towards our vendors, who have maintained their faith in Arqana and showed tremendous resilience throughout the season. It has been a long week and we are very much aware of the uneasy financial situation breeders and pinhookers are faced with due to the high production costs, but their adaptability has allowed the market to play its role and all these yearlings can now move on to the next stage of their career. We also wish to thank all buyers and underbidders, on the grounds on online, for their relentless competitiveness. It is specifically heartening to see a new generation of trainers step forward–there is no doubt that the measures recently announced by France Galop to bolster 2-year-old racing in France will have encouraged them even further. Finally, our heartfelt gratitude goes to all members of the Arqana team, who have been on deck every day with a positive attitude, as well as to our partners headed by caterer Henri Morel and his staff, who keep doing their best to serve our clients in spite of the logistical constraints.”
