Godolphin's 'TDN Rising Star' Local Dynasty (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will relish the muddy track, according to Charlie Appleby, and returns off a soft-ground breakthrough score in October's Listed Pontefract Castle when last seen.

“He has done well over the winter and we know that he will handle the ground following his wins at Sandown and Pontefract,” the trainer said. “Stepping up in trip looks as though it should suit and this seems a decent starting point for his campaign.”

O'Brien Dynasty To Retain Sovereignty?

Aidan O'Brien has struck for seven of the last 10 editions and relies on Dundalk maiden winner San Antonio (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in his quest for an overall 10th triumph, which would be one shy of Barry Hills' record 11.

“He's in good form and won his maiden nicely in Dundalk,” the trainer commented. “I don't know if he's run in that ground before, so we're not sure about that, but he's in good form.”

Son Donnacha also has representation and sends forth G2 Golden Fleece S. third Alder (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who will line up off a comeback win at Cork last month.

“He's a very nice horse and we've always thought a lot of him,” said the junior O'Brien. “He was always going to make a better 3-year-old and the race is timed nicely for him. It's three weeks from his last run and then about three weeks to the Derby, so it has worked out well and we will learn a bit more about him.”

Possible Delays For Passenger's Return

It's been a long 20 years since the Dee hosted a subsequent Blue Riband hero, Kris Kin (Kris S.) doing the double for Sir Michael Stoute, but the veteran maestro's impressive Wood Ditton winner Passenger (Ulysses {Ire}) is by no means a certain starter in this year's renewal.

“Sir Michael is going to review the ground in the morning and should it be deemed too soft, Passenger may not run,” revealed Niarchos Family's racing manager Alan Cooper. “He's a horse that needs good ground, so it wouldn't make sense for his second start to run the horse on an unsuitable surface.”

Ormonde Duel In Store

Later on the card, the eight-runner G3 tote.co.uk Bet £5 Get £20 Ormonde S. appears to be a straight-up duel between 2022 hero Hamish (GB) (Motivator {GB}) and Ballydoyle's G1 Derby fifth and G2 King Edward VII victor Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who annexed last year's G3 Chester Vase at this meeting.

“He carries a penalty and is very well, but could have done with a better draw,” said trainer William Haggas of the former. “He's ready to go, he enjoys a bit of cut in the ground and I believe it is going to be quite soft. He should enjoy it and we will try to take advantage of the [soft] ground while we have it.”

Ryan Moore is hopeful Changingoftheguard, who comes back off a 328-day break, is up to the task on seasonal return.

“He was very impressive in testing ground when winning the Chester Vase here last season and followed up with a good fifth in the Derby,” the rider said. “We never saw him after [the King Edward VII at] Royal Ascot as he picked up an injury, but we are obviously very happy with him now or else we wouldn't be here. Hopefully, he can get a Group 1 on his CV this season. It's a deep and tough race for a Group 3, but this is a good starting point for him.”

What the May Hill always needs is an unbeaten filly apparently on the march to the Classics and Jaber Abdullah's Dance In The Grass (GB) (Cracksman {GB}) fits the bill, having mastered the subsequent G3 Prestige S. winner Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in Sandown's Listed Star S. July 21. The likes of Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) took this with similar profiles in recent times and this test will tell us which way the Charlie and Mark Johnston trainee will go. One who comes from the other end of the experience spectrum is the Tom Clover-trained Crystallium (GB) (Expert Eye {GB}), a granddaughter of the Lloyd-Webber's G1 Fillies' Mile heroine Crystal Music (Nureyev) who impressed on her winning debut over seven at Chelmsford Aug. 25. Bought for a mere 22,000gns at the Book 2 Sale, she was unsold at 28,000gns at the Craven Breeze-Up but has obviously made giant strides in the interim. “She is an exciting prospect and has shaped up well in her work at home,” Clover said. “I wouldn't run her on quick ground and I wouldn't run her on heavy ground, but I think she'll be fine on ground in between.” Also on the card is the £300,000 Weatherbys Scientific £300,000 2-Y-O S., where Amo Racing Limited's exciting filly Magical Sunset (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) is in action having beaten the subsequent TDN Rising Star Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in what could turn out to be an important Windsor maiden Aug. 15.

Success Breeds Success

It has been another mixed week for Shadwell, but few among Sheikha Hissa's organisation have any reason to complain about their overall racing fates in 2022 and the Park Hill sees another great opportunity for the blue-and-white. Last year's G1 Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares S. heroine Eshaada (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) is back on her favoured easier ground again with another potentially profitable autumn ahead and holds a distinct class edge over all her exposed rivals here. The exception could be Woodford Thoroughbreds' 3-year-old filly River Of Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), an unknown quantity who put the Belmont Gold Cup winner Loft (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in his place in the Aug. 20 Listed Chester S.

Welcome Back

   For all that the current flat campaign can safely be categorised as above-average, the one star it has been missing all along is Godolphin's 2021 Derby and King George hero Adayar. Doncaster's 10-furlong Hilton Garden Inn Doncaster Conditions S. is the stage for his keenly-anticipated comeback, not the Coronation Cup or Prince of Wales's or King George as was expected at varying stages of the season, but for those who revelled in his barnstorming performances last summer it matters little. The fact is, the one horse who could light up the autumn like none other than Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) is here and under race conditions once again. There is still time for the imposing bay to make a serious impact this year and this is more about how he goes through the race rather than whether he has the class to easily dispose of Mick and Janice Mariscotti's often-disappointing Derby fourth Masekela (Ire) (El Kabeir). Sir Henry Cecil brought a low-on-confidence Twice Over (GB) (Observatory) here in 2009 and two starts later he was winning the Champion S., so that is welcome precedent.

Making Waves At ParisLongchamp

At ParisLongchamp, the G3 Prix d'Aumale sees the Wertheimers' TDN Rising Star Left Sea (GB) (Frankel {GB}) meet some intriguing rivals but the manner of the performance of the Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained daughter of Left Hand (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) on her Deauville debut Aug. 18 suggests she has nothing to fear. In the G3 Prix des Chenes, Ballydoyle make another rare foray to one of France's lesser-contested juvenile contests with the stable even more replete than usual with potential Classic contenders. The Aug. 15 Dundalk maiden winner Adelaide River (Ire) (Australia {GB}) from the family of Uncle Mo is the chosen one and he is joined by compatriot Pivotal Trigger (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), Yuesheng Zhang's Jessica Harrington-trained son of the G1 Prix Royal-Oak and Park Hill winner Allegretto (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who took an always-competitive Galway maiden July 25.

As part of the multi-year agreement, ITV will provide coverage of the two-day World Championships on ITV channels, including ITV, ITV3 and ITV4. Broadcast coverage times will be announced at a later date.

ITV will also work alongside Breeders' Cup to offer a consumer competition in which winners will receive a trip for two to the World Championships, including premium tickets and access to the Breeders' Cup, airfare, hotel accommodations and transportation.

Sisterson said he is making the move in the hopes that expanding and taking on other owners will lead to more opportunities.

“This is something we have been discussing for a few months,” he said. “I give all the credit to Calumet. If it weren't for them I wouldn't be where I am today. We started discussing things a while ago and it looked like the only way that I could grow in this business was to reach out, branch out and always try to do better. Talking to the people at Calumet, they said at one point that it would be selfish to hold on to me as a private trainer. They also said that if I ever decided to go out on my own they'd still like to have a working relationship with me.”

Sisterson, a native of Durham, England, was a long-time assistant to Doug O'Neill before going to work for Calumet. Calumet uses a number of different trainers, but Sisterson was the only one among them who trained exclusively for the operation. He won his first stakes for Calumet with Oxy Lady (Oxbow) in the 2018 GIII Tempted S. In 2019, his first full year with Calumet, Sisterson won 20 races, including three graded stakes. The team reached new heights in 2020 when Sisterson won his first two Grade I races, taking the GI Personal Ensign S. with Vexatious (Giant's Causeway) and the GI Cigar Mile H. with True Timber (Mineshaft). There were two more Grade I wins in 2021, the GI Man o'War S. won by Channel Cat (English Channel) and the GI Alfred Vanderbilt H. won by Lexitonian (Speightstown).

“For four years, we have had a lot of success and a lot of fun times,” Sisterson said. “We've had a few Grade I winners together What I'd like to do now is to continue to win Grade I's for Calumet and for other organizations, as well. The long-term goal is to win a Kentucky Derby, to win Breeders' Cup races.”

Sisterson said that the continuing support from Calumet will make the transition to being a public trainer easier to accomplish.

“I'm excited,” he said. “I would have been nervous if I weren't getting the support of Calumet. They are 100 percent behind this. It's a dream come true. They have allowed me to train privately for them for four years. Now they're going to help me out and give me a number of their best horses. Their support has been unbelievable. I'll forever be in their debt for the support they have given me.”

Sisterson plans on unveiling his new stable at the Del Mar meet.

“I worked for Doug for so long in California and had a very good experience there,” Sisterson said. “I'd like to go to Del Mar for the summer and take advantage of the ship and win program. I know California well. California has been good to me and I'd like to get back there. I think California racing is very much still alive and I'm excited to think I will be a part of it. The short-term goal is to get the public stable set up at Del Mar and to have winners at the meet and to be able to continue to grow after this summer.”

“I thought he had an unbelievable breeze today,” Ward said. “The turf was soggy, and I love to breeze on a deep, soft turf. They come in and out of the works so good. He broke off 10 lengths in front of a 2-year-old filly, ['TDN Rising Star'] Love Reigns (Ire) (U S Navy Flag)–she's no match for a horse like him at this stage of her career–but she had a target. She had a great work (1:03.60) following the fastest horse in the world. He skipped over it–it was unbelievable. That's what you want to see.”

Love Reigns, owned by Stonestreet Stables, scored a 9 3/4-length victory at Keeneland in her Apr. 29 career debut sprinting on turf. She is scheduled to race in the G2 Queen Mary S. June 15.

Stonestreet also owns G1 Platinum Jubilee S.-bound Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) (1:04) and Palace of Holyroodhouse S. contender Ruthin (GB) (Ribchester {Ire}) (1:04.80) (video). Campanelle is bidding for her third win at Royal Ascot, following triumphs in the Queen Mary in 2020 and G1 Commonwealth Cup in 2021.

Ward's other Royal Ascot worker was Andrew Farm and For the People Racing Stable's No Nay Hudson (Ire) (No Nay Never) (1:06.40), who is headed to the Windsor Castle June 15. No Nay Hudson won his career debut at Keeneland Apr. 28 on the dirt.

On June 8, they have a direct flight from Indianapolis to London Stansted Airport, “and they land and have a 10-minute ride to Chelmsford Racecourse, where they'll stay for three days until they go to Ascot,” Ward said.

Dettori made his Derby breakthrough in 2007 aboard Authorized (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) for Peter Chapple-Hyam as well as partnering John Gosden's Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) to victory in the race back in 2015 and he will bid to win the iconic race for a third time aboard the impressive G3 Ballsax S. winner.

A general 10-1 chance for the Derby, Piz Badile has raced just three times, but that reappearance win in the Ballysax at Leopardstown received a major advertisement when the runner-up, Buckaroo (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), ran out an impressive winner of the Listed Tetrarch S. at the Curragh last month.

Confirming Dettori for the ride, Alan Cooper, racing manager to Piz Badile's owners the Niarchos Family, said: “Frankie is going to ride at Epsom. The horse is in good form. We've got just under three weeks to go, so hopefully he stays in good form between now and then.”

He added, “I think Donnacha is very happy with his horse and the decision was made not to go to the Derrinstown (Derby Trial), which would have been the horse's third trip to Leopardstown.

“I'm in regular contact with Donnacha and he's delighted with his horse. They all need luck in running and we'll go from there.”
