LEXINGTON, KY – The Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale defied what has appeared in recent months to be a weakening sales market with a strong opening session in Lexington Monday.

“It was a very encouraging start,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “There was lots of activity throughout the day, really from start to finish, at all level of horses and at all price ranges and all types of horses. Yearlings sold very well, mares in foal sold very well, broodmare prospects sold very well. The place was crowded very much from start to finish. And there was lots of activity at every level, which was very encouraging. I think we all had a little fear and trepidation about where the middle market is and is there going to be a market for some of the horses that are perceived to be the lesser expensive ones, and I thought the trade was good there today.”

A total of 196 horses sold Monday for a gross of $7,925,500. The average was $40,436 and the median was $16,000. Those figures were significantly up from the auction's 2023 opening session when 182 horses sold for $5,524,300, for an average of $30,353 and a median of $10,500.

With 41 horses reported not sold, the buy-back rate was 17.3%. It was 20.5% a year ago.

Bloodstock agent Steve Young made the highest bid of the day when securing the Grade I-placed broodmare prospect Home Cooking (Honor Code) for $500,000 on behalf of Ramona Bass, who continues to acquire mares to support her recently retired stallion Annapolis.

A colt by Constitution was the day's top-priced yearling when selling for $300,000. The 22-year-old Jes Sikura signed the ticket on behalf of a pinhooking partnership in the name of Discovery Bay.

During Monday's session, 25 horses sold for six figures. Up for 13 to hit that mark a year ago.

The Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale concludes with a session beginning Tuesday at 10 a.m. The session is expected to be dominated by offerings from the dispersal of Lothenbach Stables.

Young Continues Buying for Annapolis

Bloodstock agent Steve Young and breeder Ramona Bass, who were busy buying mares to support Bass's recently retired Grade I-winning stallion Annapolis (War Front) at last month's Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, continued their buying spree at the Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale, going to $500,000 to acquire Home Cooking (Honor Code) (hip 68) Monday in Lexington. The Grade I-placed broodmare prospect was consigned by Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa.

“She is a wonderful mare,” Young said. “She was a very fast horse at OBS. She was unlucky not to win the Grade I as a 2-year-old and, if she had won that, I don't know what she would have cost, but she would have cost more than that. And she still has the same genes, the same balance and the same mechanics. So, I think she was bought at a very good price.”

Home Cooking, a daughter of Olympic Avenue (Hard Spun), is a half-sister to multiple stakes-placed Gold for Kitten (Kitten's Joy) and from the family of Valid Expectations. She sold to Three Amigos for $260,000 after working a furlong in 9 4/5 at the 2022 OBS March sale.

Racing for Mike Pegram, Paul Weitman and Karl Watson and trained by Bob Baffert, the bay graduated by 9 1/4 lengths at Del Mar that August. She stumbled at the break before coming up just a head short when second as the heavy favorite in the GI Del Mar Debutante (video). On the board in four of eight career starts and with two wins, Home Cooking retired with earnings of $176,180.

Of Home Cooking's appearance in the February sale, Young said, “In the last decade, there are a lot of people who would rather be a big fish in a smaller pond. She's got quality to sell in any sale. She's a serious horse.”

Young purchased four mares to support Annapolis at the Keeneland January sale: Bridlewood Cat (Street Sense) (hip 267) for $750,000; Kaling (Practical Joke) (hip 387) for $650,000; Juniper's Moon (Galileo {Ire}) (hip 419) for $625,000; and Pure Pauline (Curlin) (hip 490) for $160,000.

“We don't have a set number, but we are going to support him for real,” Young said. “We don't necessarily have to have a full roster by the start of the breeding season–there are going to be horses who either retire or come up privately on the way. So we are just methodically buying horses that he deserves.”

Annapolis, winner of the 2022 GI Coolmore Turf Mile, will begin his stud career this month at Claiborne at a fee of $12,500.

Constitution Colt Gets Sikura on the Board

Jes Sikura, flanked by Chris Baccari and Randy Hartley in the upstairs balcony of the sales pavilion, signed the ticket at $300,000 to acquire a colt by Constitution (hip 242) in the name of Discovery Bay. Sikura said the colt was purchased for a pinhooking partnership, but the partnership did not include Baccari or Hartley.

“He was a really nice, smooth-moving Constitution,” Sikura said. “I bought him for a partnership. It's a new partnership–a guy from down south. We are going to wheel him back as a yearling. And we are pretty excited to see what happens.”

Consigned by Four Star Sales and bred by Cypress Creek Equine, the chestnut colt is out of Special Thanks (Broken Vow). The mare, in foal to War Front, was purchased by Cypress Creek for $200,000 at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton February sale. Carrying this Constitution colt, she RNA'd for $170,000 at the 2023 Keeneland January sale. Her War Front colt sold for $210,000 at Fasig-Tipton the next month.

“He is probably going to be a late bloomer–he's a late May foal–so I thought he had good angles and proportional,” Sikura said of the yearling's appeal. “I think he can develop into something big, strong and attractive.”

Asked if this was the highest-priced ticket he has signed, the 22-year-old Sikura, son of Hill 'n' Dale's John Sikura, said, “In the U.S., yes.”

Wade Strikes for Justify Filly

David Wade, still in an ebullient mood after adding Endorsed to the roster at Northview Stallion Station, restocked for a return trip to the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale later this year when purchasing a filly by Justify (hip 224) for $290,000 at Newtown Paddocks Monday.

“She will go to the Saratoga sale,” Wade said of the short yearling. “We've been pinhooking some horses there for the last couple of years. She'll be another one that we will take there.”

Consigned by Padraig Campion's Blandford Stud, the bay filly was bred by Paget Bloodstock. She is out of the unraced mare Shannon Faith (Discreet Cat) and her third dam is Felicita (Rubiano), who produced Take Charge Lady. Take Charge Lady is the dam of Will Take Charge, Take Charge Indy and As Time Goes By.

Shannon Faith was purchased by Shannon Bloodstock for $27,000 at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton February sale.

Speaking of fillies by red hot Justify, Wade said, “They are nice, robust horses and most of them are pretty correct. And they've got bone. This one looks like an athlete. She is a nice walker and an attractive type horse that we think is going to develop very well by August.”

At last year's Saratoga sale, Northview Stallion Station sold a colt by Good Magic (hip 150), purchased for $225,000 at Keeneland January, for $350,000, and a colt by Gun Runner (hip 220), purchased for $400,000 at Keeneland January, for $650,000.

Asked for his impression of the foal/short yearling market this year, Wade said, “At that end of the market, it is always competitive. I know people like to make comments about how the market is this year as opposed to last year, but it's always competitive when you are trying to buy a good horse. Everybody is here for the same ones.”

A Date for Mage

Mage (Good Magic) took co-owner and bloodstock agent Ramiro Restrepo on the ride of a lifetime when he won the GI Kentucky Derby last May. Restrepo was in action at Fasig-Tipton Monday purchasing mares for Jose Aguirre's JR Ranch to support the stallion who begins his stud career this month at Airdrie Stud. Restrepo signed the ticket at $290,000 to acquire multiple stakes winner and multiple graded placed R Adios Jersey (Adios Charlie) (hip 191) from the Gainesway consignment.

“We were looking for speed, so we got R Adios Jersey for him,” Restrepo said. “She ran some really impressive figures. She was running at our home track at Gulfstream, so we had an up close and personal look at her. She is a beautiful filly with really nice conformation. So we are over the moon and really happy to get her.”

Bred by Ocala Stud and Michael O'Farrell, Jr., R Adios Jersey is out of Marion Theatre (Montbrook) and sold for $12,000 at the 2020 OBS March sale.

She was a four-time stakes winner against fellow Florida-breds and last year was third in the GIII Hurricane Bertie S. and GIII Princess Rooney S. On the board in 12 of 15 starts, she won seven times and earned $393,245.

Earlier in Monday's session of the winter sale, JR Ranch acquired multiple stakes winner Luna Belle (Great Notion) (hip 119) for $100,000 from Bill Reightler's consignment.

“Size and speed,” Restrepo said of what he looks for in potential dates for Mage. “Fillies that were able to win at a black-type level. I've always thought that, with the mares, you look for speed, and the stallion will give them the class that they need to take them over the top. Mage was a horse that naturally was an exceptional seven furlong to a miler and [trainer] Gustavo [Delgado] got him to go the 1 1/4 miles. But he was a horse with a lot of heart and a lot of fight. These mares show those similar qualities. If those two things can come together, we'll have some nice pieces.”

Of JR Ranch, Restrepo said, “They have bought a couple of properties in Ocala and we've bought horses in Goffs and Arqana this summer with them in partnership. They are new to the game and very, very excited. We have some 2-year-olds running, a 3-year-old we bought at the Royal Ascot sale. So they are game and love the business.”

At last year's Goffs London Sale, JR Ranch purchased Ocean Vision (Ire) (U S Navy Flag) (hip 25) for ₤250,000, while at Arqana last August, Restrepo's Marquee Bloodstock acquired a yearling by Siyouni (hip 279) for €700,000 on behalf of Aguirre.

“They are racing, breeding, a little pinhooking, racing internationally,” Restrepo said of JR Ranch. “A little bit of everything.”

Good Magic Colt Destined for Resale

Marshall Taylor acquired a colt by Good Magic (hip 141) for $270,000 on behalf of his Castleton Way/Hard Five pinhooking partnership Monday at Fasig-Tipton. The Pennsylvania-bred short yearling, consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, was bred by Uptowncharlybrown Stud.

“He is a beautiful colt with a lot of size and stretch to him for his sire,” Taylor said as several would-be buyers peered in to see who had acquired the popular colt. “He has a really nice walk on him. We are excited to have him. We plan on taking him back in a summer sale this year.”

Out of the unraced Moonlight Serenade (Malibu Moon), the colt is a half-brother to Dixie Serenade (Uptowncharlybrown), winner of the 2018 GIII Victory Ride S. The mare's 2-year-old Not the First Time (Not This Time) RNA'd for $90,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“We have a little bit of information on the 2-year-old, the Not This Time filly,” Taylor said. “I know she's training really well. So that gave me a little confidence right there that we might have an update.”

Of the foal market last November and into the short yearling market this year, Taylor said, “I feel like this year, you've had to stretch more than in past years. I feel like it's been tough. November was really hard and it carried right over into January and now into February.”

Saturday's Grade 1, $3 Million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes has been touted for nearly three months as a matchup between Breeders' Cup Classic winner Knicks Go and Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Life Is Good. Combined, these two powerful horses won nine of 12 races in 2021, with Knicks Go having kicked off his campaign with a victory in this race one year ago.

Seven others entered and none are slouches, though few are as accomplished as the top pair. Sir Winston has won six of 19 career starts including the G1 Belmont Stakes in 2019 and he most recently won the G3 Valedictory Stakes last month. Chess Chief won the G2 New Orleans Classic Stakes last March at the distance of the Pegasus World Cup and also enters the race off a win, in the Tenacious Stakes near the end of the year. Title Ready won the G3 Louisiana Stakes a little over a year ago and has only raced three times since then, most recently when sixth in the Tinsel Stakes in mid-December. Endorsed was a fast closing second in the G3 Mr. Prospector Stakes last month at Gulfstream and is approaching the half-million mark in career earnings, but his last victory was in May of 2020. Empty Tomb finished second in the Queens County Stakes in his most recent race but has never won a stakes race. Similarly, Commandeer won his final two races of 2021 but this will be his first try in a stakes race in his 11th career start. Stilleto Boy rounds out the field, with a two-for-12 record including a win in the Iowa Derby last July.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=23 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=177 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Analysis:

Considering both Knicks Go and Life Is Good have earned each and every one of their 15 career wins (combined) when leading from the start, the first question to ask ourselves is whether this is a case of the irresistible force versus the immovable object. One potential scenario is that both horses hook up from the start and go so fast in the first portions of the race they are out of gas by the time the field hits the home stretch, with the race won in an upset by one of the other seven. Certainly after about an eighth of a mile has been run we will know if that is the case.

I believe that will not be the case, because Knicks Go is faster than Life Is Good when push comes to shove, and the fact Knicks Go gets the rail whereas Life Is Good will break from the four post. Those factors should give Knicks Go the edge. Whether Life Is Good can relax in second position in the early stages then pass Knicks Go late is a question to be answered as the race is being run. My belief is that will not happen.

Additionally, since Empty Tomb comes into the race off the two best races of his career, having led through the opening half-mile in both, that leads to more early pressure on Life Is Good. Since not leading in the early stages is foreign to Life Is Good, he can be passed late by one of a couple of horses who will be far back in the early stages.

Contenders to win:

In terms of total speed, as measured by  Equibase Speed Figures, Knicks Go has an advantage in that department as well, with a 117 figure in last year's Pegasus World Cup following a rest after winning the 2020 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (won by Life Is Good last year). Following the Pegasus, Knicks Go earned a 119 figure winning the Cornhusker Handicap (at the distance of the Pegasus), a 118 figure winning the Whitney Stakes (at the distance of the Pegasus), and a 119 figure winning the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Although Life Is Good equaled that 119 figure in his Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile win, he has never run this mile and one-eighth trip whereas Knicks Go has won four of five starts at the distance. Life is Good's other wins last year consisted of 115 figures in the San Felipe Stakes and when beaten a nose in the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes last summer. Additionally, the second and third place finishers (Ginobili and Restrainedvengence) beaten by Life Is Good in the Mile aren't up to the same standards as the next two behind Knicks Go (Medina Spirit and Essential Quality) in the Classic. Therefore Knicks Go appears to be the one to beat by far in this years' Pegasus World Cup Invitational, and as stated earlier I am taking the stand Life Is Good can be beaten for second as well.

The horse with the best “counter-energy” profile appears to be Endorsed, and it is not totally improbable he could post the upset if Knicks Go does not win. Although his 10 starts last year were all in one-turn races, and although he did not win one of them, Endorsed ran very well in his two most recent starts, earning 104 and 99 figures respectively, especially his last race when he missed winning the Mr. Prospector Stakes by a half-length when rallying from last of seven in the early stages. Earlier in his career, Endorsed was successful in two-turn races, such as when winning at Gulfstream Park in January 2020 then finishing second in the Alydar Stakes at Belmont that spring at the distance of the Pegasus. With very strong morning workouts at Gulfstream Park leading to this race and with a late running style benefited by a likely exceedingly fast early pace, Endorsed could get into the top two for the 11th time in his 23rd career start on dirt.

Another horse with potential to lag back early and get into second, with a very slight chance to win, is Chess Chief. This hard-knocking 6-year-old has earned over $800,000 in his career and enters the race off a win last month in the Tenacious Stakes at Fair Grounds with a 106 figure. That equaled the 106 figure earned when rallying from last of seven to win the New Orleans Classic Stakes last March, which was the biggest win of his career. Now that he's back in winning form, another “A” effort is certainly not out of the question.

The rest of the field, all who have the ability to compete effectively in this race, with their best  Equibase Speed Figures, is Commandeer (97), Empty Tomb (113), Sir Winston (107), Stilleto Boy (108) and Title Ready (102).

At the break in the seven-furlong G3 stakes, Wind of Change showed his head in front first, taking a one-length lead inside the first furlong. Into the first turn, Wind of Change maintained that advantage over Doc Amster and Officiating, setting fractions of :22.18 for the first quarter and :44.75 for the half mile. Into the far turn, Officiating went three-wide, going to the outside of Wind of Change and Doc Amster as they hit the top of the stretch.

In the Gulfstream straight, Officiating and Doc Amster passed Wind of Change, with Dennis' Moment and Endorsed on the outside challenging. Officiating pulled clear with a furlong to go and held off a late surging Endorsed to win the Mr. Prospector by three-quarters of a length. Endorsed was second, with Dennis' Moment holding on for third. Doc Amster, Wind of Change, Flap Jack, and Poppy's Pride rounded out the order of finish.

The final time for the seven furlongs was 1:22.28. Find this race's chart here.

Officiating paid $16.80, $6.00, and $3.60. Endorsed paid $3.20 and $2.40. Dennis' Moment paid $2.60.

Bred in Florida by owner Vegso Racing Stable, Officiating is by Blame out of the Dixie Union mare Come a Callin. He is trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. The 3-year-old colt was a $100,000 RNA consigned by Eaton Sales at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. With his win in the G3 Mr. Prospector, Officiating has three wins in 10 starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 14-3-4-2 and career earnings of $206,547.

Jockey Tyler Gaffalione, who has gotten off to a solid start at Gulfstream's Championship Meet with two wins on Friday's opening day program and two more Wednesday, will seek his first stakes win of the winter session aboard Mark Breen's Endorsed in Saturday's $100,000 Mr. Prospector (G3), a seven-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up that will be the first of 37 graded-stakes on the Gulfstream's $14.26 million stakes schedule.

Endorsed, who was claimed for $100,000 out of a third-place finish in an Aug. 26 optional claiming allowance at Saratoga, has been winless in three starts for trainer Mike Maker, finishing third in the Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes, fourth in the Phoenix (G2) at Keeneland and a close third in an optional claiming allowance at Churchill while being ridden by Gaffalione for the first time.

“Since Mike took over his training, he's really coming into his own. He's had three big performances in his last three races against top-quality horses,” Gaffalione said. “It seems like he leaves himself with too much to do. I'm hoping the extra difference will help him out and he gets a clean trip.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The 5-year-old son of Medaglia d'Oro is graded stakes-placed and has run respectably in a few Grade 1 stakes, but he is still seeking to win his first stakes in a steady 23-race career.

Albaugh Family Stables LLC's Dennis' Moment enters the Mr. Prospector coming off his first win since capturing the 2019 Iroquois at Churchill Downs. The Dale Romans-trained son of Tiznow captured a seven-furlong optional claiming allowance at Keeneland.

Corey Lanerie has the call aboard Dennis' Moment.

Drain the Clock was nominated to the Mr. Prospector, but trainer Saffie Joseph has opted to run the Grade 1 winner in a Friday optional claiming allowance off a layoff and run Daniel Alonso's Wind of Change and Vegso Racing Stable's Officiating in Saturday's stakes.

Wind of Change, who won the ungraded Mr. Prospector at Monmouth in May, is coming off a second-place finish in an optional claiming allowance in his first start on Gulfstream's Tapeta course.

“I thought he handled it well. Obviously, going in there was a bit of unknown because he had never been on it. Overall, I thought it was a good race,” Joseph said. “The horse that beat him [King of Dreams] came back and won a stake. A good horse beat him.”

Joseph expects Wind of Change to be a forward factor in the Mr. Prospector.

“His best style of running is on lead, so we're trying, hopefully, to go to the lead,” he said.

Edgard Zayas has the mount aboard the Brazilian-bred 6-year-old.

Officiating, who made a strong middle move on Tapeta before fading in the Showing Up, won the off-the-turf Bear's Den at seven furlongs over a sloppy track in his previous start.

“He's kind of a weird kind of horse. We've only had him for four starts, and he's trained really well on the dirt. We only ran him once on dirt, and it was on the slop, and he handled it well. He won a stake,” Joseph said. “His previous races on dry dirt, he's never hit the board. It's kind of an experiment. He's training so well on the dirt. I want to give him one try.”

Luis Saez is scheduled to ride Officiating for the first time.

Calumet Farm's Flap Jack, Russell Staggs' Doc Amster and Stonehedge LLC's Poppy's Pride round out the field.

Griffon Farms and Michelle Lovell's 5-year-old homebred gelding Just Might led every step of the way in Saturday night's inaugural $275,000 Louisville Thoroughbred Society at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., to collect his fourth straight stakes win with a three-quarter-length triumph over Endorsed. Even-money favorite Bango was another 1 ¼ lengths back in third.

Just Might, trained by Lovell and ridden by Rafael Bejarano, ran six furlongs in 1:08.71 after dictating the pace in the field of six 3-year-olds and up through fractions of :21.81, :44.75 and :56.53.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“He got into stride quickly and was on the early pace,” Bejarano said. “He traveled well and even though we were going fast he was doing it comfortably. In deep stretch, there were other horses coming to us but he was very game. He's been in great form this year.”

Just Might won for the eighth time in 29 starts and the $168,105 payday jumped the Kentucky-bred's career earnings to $688,414.

Just Might, a son of Justin Phillip, spent the summer at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va., where he was victorious in the $100,000 Da Hoss Stakes on turf and $100,000 Chesapeake Stakes on dirt. His stakes-win streak began at Churchill Downs came in June when he defeated six rivals in the $110,000 Mighty Beau at 5 ½ furlongs on turf.

“He's in unbelievable form this year,” Lovell said. “Turf or dirt, it doesn't really matter what the surface is. He runs so hard every time. It was great being able to celebrate tonight with 'Pappy' (Griffon). That made this win much more special. Pappy is such a lovely human. He's been like family to me and has been with me for most of my career. This horse is very special to us.”

Said Griffon: “He's by far the best horse I've ever owned and bred. I was hoping he would run in 1:09 tonight to try and back up the (1:07.93) last out. He went in 1:08 and change (1:08.71). He's run well on every surface but I think he loves the dirt.”

Just Might paid $8, $4.40, and $2.60 as the 3-1 second betting choice. Endorsed, ridden by Julien Leparoux at odds of 8-1, returned $7.80 and $3.60. Bango, with Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle, paid $2.40 to show.

It was another six lengths back to Mighty Mischief in fourth, who was followed by Dennis' Moment and Derby Date.

The race is named for the Louisville Thoroughbred Society, which opened for regular hours of operation in March 2021. The Louisville Thoroughbred Society is Louisville's only on-site wagering by Churchill Downs in the heart of Louisville's metropolitan scene. The premier club for Thoroughbred enthusiasts is open for private membership applications, and reservations for special events are being accepted.

W.S. Farish homebred Code of Honor, a multiple Grade 1-winner trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, leads a talented field of five in Saturday's 40th running of the Grade 2, $150,000 Kelso Handicap, a one-turn mile on the main track for 3-year-olds and upward at Belmont Park.

The Kelso is one of five graded races on Saturday's card which includes the Grade 1, $250,000 Belmont Derby Invitational, a 10-furlong turf test offering a berth in the Breeders' Cup Turf; the Grade 1, $250,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at 12 furlongs on the turf for 3-year-olds and up; the Grade 2, $150,000 Gallant Bloom Handicap at 6 ½-furlongs for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up; and the Grade 2, $150,000 Pilgrim for 2-year-olds at 1 1/16-miles on the turf.

Code of Honor enjoyed a tremendous sophomore campaign, capturing the 10-furlong Grade 1 Runhappy Travers at Saratoga ahead of a dramatic stretch duel with Vino Rosso in the 10-furlong Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup in which Code of Honor was elevated to victory. A standout 2019 season included graded scores in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park and the Grade 3 Dwyer at Belmont, the latter following a game effort in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, where the talented chestnut was elevated to second.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>
The 4-year-old Noble Mission colt opened his current campaign with a half-length score over Kelso-rival Endorsed in the Grade 3 Westchester traveling 1 1/16-miles over a muddy Belmont main. The $2.5-million earner followed with a closing third in the Runhappy Met Mile on July 4 and was subsequently an even fourth in the nine-furlong Grade 1 Whitney on August 1 at the Spa, defeated five lengths to the victorious Improbable who came back to win the Grade 1 Awesome Again at Santa Anita on Saturday.

Following a brief freshening, Code of Honor has breezed five times, including a half-mile effort in 48.45 seconds Monday on Big Sandy. McGaughey said the colt is training forwardly as he prepares for the second half of his 2020 campaign.

“He's doing really well and has trained well into this,” said McGaughey.

McGaughey, who won the 1993 Kelso with Hall of Famer Lure, said he preferred to bring Code of Honor back at a shorter distance rather than defend his title in the Grade 1, $250,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup on October 10.

“After the Whitney I had to start over with him, so this is the restart,” said McGaughey. “I don't want to run him a mile and a quarter after I backed off on him.”

Code of Honor will exit post 5 under Hall of Famer Javier Castellano, taking over from Hall of Famer John Velazquez, who will be piloting Grade 1 Kentucky Derby-winner Authentic in the Grade 1 Preakness at Pimlico.

Godolphin homebred Endorsed sports a record of four wins and three seconds from 11 starts as he looks for his first career stakes score for Hall of Fame conditioner Bill Mott.

The regally bred Medaglia d'Oro colt, out of the 2012 Grade 1 Gazelle-winner Dance Card, opened his 4-year-old campaign in January with an optional claiming score at Gulfstream Park for former conditioner Kiaran McLaughlin. Following a fifth in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap in March, Endorsed was transferred to the care of Mott and promptly won an optional-claiming tilt traveling 1 1/16-miles on May 2 at Oaklawn Park.

Endorsed proved stubborn down the lane with a prominent trip to be second in the Grade 3 Westchester ahead of a seventh in the Grade 1 Runhappy Met Mile. Last out, the versatile bay completed the exacta behind Spinoff in the restricted nine-furlong Alydar on August 9 at Saratoga.

Mott, in search of his first Kelso win, said Endorsed will appreciate the turn back in distance.

“I think the one-turn mile is good for him,” said Mott. “I think that he's effective from a mile to a mile and a quarter, but he seemed to run real good here in the one-turn mile and a sixteenth in the Westchester.”

Junior Alvarado will have the call from post 3.

Klaravich Stables' lightly raced Grade 1-winner Complexity will look to give four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown a second Kelso score following Patternrecognition's winning effort in 2018.

The 4-year-old Maclean's Music bay won the 2018 Grade 1 Champagne at second asking at Belmont but was tenth in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile to complete the campaign. Complexity made three sophomore starts with an optional-claiming score on Big Sandy sandwiched between off-the-board efforts in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens at Belmont and the Grade 1 Malibu in December at Santa Anita.

Complexity kicked off his 4-year-old season with a smart 2 ¼-length score over Win Win Win in an optional-claiming mile on July 2 at Belmont, but had to settle for second to that same rival last out in the Grade 1 Forego contested through a rainstorm over a sloppy Saratoga main track on August 29.

Complexity will emerge from post 4 under Jose Ortiz.

Long Lake Stable's Stan the Man, trained by John Terranova, scratched out of last Saturday's six-furlong Grade 2 Vosburgh to enter the one-turn mile Kelso. Although cross-entered in Saturday's Grade 3 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash, he will compete at Belmont this weekend.

A veteran of 24 career starts, the Broken Vow chestnut boasts a record of 7-7-2 and enters from a last-to-first score in the restricted Tale of the Cat at six furlongs on August 20 at the Spa.

Stan the Man, who won the 2019 Queens County at the Big A, will be in search of a first graded stakes score in his fourth attempt. The gelding was sixth in the 2018 Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct; a front-running second in the 2019 Grade 3 Westchester at Belmont; and fifth in the 2019 Grade 2 True North.

Eric Cancel, aboard for the Cigar Mile effort, will guide Stan the Man from post 2.

Ron Paolucci Racing's Mo Dont No, a 7-year-old Ohio-bred son of Uncle Mo who is cross-entered in Friday's Grade 2 Phoenix at Keeneland, will instead make his New York debut in his 45th career start.

Trained by Anthony Quartarolo, the multiple stakes-winning Mo Dont No boasts a record of 20-10-3 with purse earnings in excess of $1 million. Two starts back, Mo Dont No captured the Governor's Buckeye Cup for the third time when traveling 10 furlongs against fellow Ohio-breds. He enters the Kelso off a flat sixth in the nine-furlong Grade 2 Charles Town Classic held August 28.

Manny Franco picks up the mount from the inside post.

The Kelso is slated as Race 8 on Saturday's 10-race program, which offers a first post of 12:40 p.m. Eastern. America's Day at the Races will present daily television coverage of the 27-day fall meet on FOX Sports and MSG Networks.

Wertheimer and Frere's Grade 2-placed homebred Spinoff, a veteran of last year's Triple Crown trail, swept to the lead on the far turn and turned back favored Endorsed through the stretch to earn his first stakes victory in Sunday's eighth running of the $85,000 Alydar at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

It was the third career win in the Alydar for Saratoga's leading rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. as well as Todd Pletcher, who moved into first place in the meet's trainer standings with his 16th victory at the summer stand.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Sent off at 3-1, Spinoff returned $8.40 for a $2 win bet. The 4-year-old Hard Spun colt covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.60 over a fast main track.

Spinoff won for the first time in four tries this year, having been beaten a neck when second in the Sunday Silence on May 17 over a sloppy track at Gulfstream Park. After coming up empty in a one-mile optional claiming allowance last out on July 2 at Belmont Park, he bounced back with a huge effort in the Alydar.

“He ran really well here last year in a mile and an eighth two-other-than and had a pretty rough trip last time and I think he ran better than it looked on paper,” Pletcher said. “We had good spacing to this and we had been pointing to it for a while. He's trained well and I thought we were going to get a good setup. The race kind of unfolded exactly how Irad and I talked about before the race and it's nice when it falls into place.”

Ortiz, Jr. settled Spinoff in the clear three wide as Its All Relevant, a winner of two straight and three of his last four races, was in front through a quarter-mile in 24.97 seconds and a half in 49.57, under moderate pressure from Bodexpress. Its All Relevant's lead shrunk as the field hit the turn and Spinoff and Bodexpress ranged up to challenge.

Spinoff came off the turn in front and was set down for a drive to the wire by Ortiz, Jr. as Endorsed, the 3-5 favorite who ran fourth in last year's Grade 1 Runhappy Travers, tried to mount his bid on the far outside but was unable to gain any ground. Spinoff crossed the wire 2 ¾ lengths in front, while there were 4 ½ lengths between Endorsed and Bodexpress in third followed by Backsideofthemoon and Its All Relevant. Tenfold was scratched.

Third in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special as a 2-year-old in 2018, Spinoff ran second in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby to punch his ticket to the 2019 Kentucky Derby where he ran 18th. After skipping the Preakness, the chestnut showed up in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes and ran sixth, beaten only three lengths, before a failed bid on turf in the Grade 1 Belmont Derby. His sophomore season ended when he rolled home 5 ¾ lengths the best in a nine-furlong optional claiming allowance last August at Saratoga.

“It's rewarding,” Pletcher said of the Alydar win. “He's a horse we always had high hopes for. We placed him pretty ambitiously. He's always been right on the verge of breaking through so hopefully, as a 4-year-old, maybe he can take it to the next level.”

Pletcher also won the first running of the Alydar in 2013 with Vitoria Olimpica, and followed up with Rally Cry in 2017. Ortiz, Jr. was first with Farhaan in 2014 and Royal Posse in 2016.

“My horse ran a great race today,” Ortiz, Jr. said. “Last time, he got in a little trouble. He relaxed so well today, and the race set up for him. In the turn, he relaxed in the clear and when I asked him to go, I got plenty from him.”
