As we approach the opening of the 2024 breeding season, the TDN staff is once again sitting down with leading breeders to find out what stallions they have chosen for their mares, and why.

Here we catch up with Christie DeBernardis, CHC's Regional Manager of the Americas.

Alberobello (m, 9, Bernardini–Carson Jen, by Carson City), booked to Uncle Mo

Alberobello hails from an exceptional family that is constantly improving. Additionally, Bernardini is becoming one of the best broodmare sires we've seen in a while. Alberobello produced an Uncle Mo colt for us in 2023 and we were so pleased with him, that we decided to breed her back to that Coolmore super sire after she produces her Justify foal this spring.

Always A Joker (f, 4, Into Mischief–Halo Humor, by Distorted Humor), booked to Justify

We purchased this full-sister to MGISW and successful sire Practical Joke at Keeneland November and look forward to her future. She is as beautifully made as she is bred. We thought Justify was a good physical and pedigree match for her first mating, plus he and her sire Into Mischief are two of the hottest stallions on the market right now.

Cozze Up Lady (m, 15, Cozzene–The White Lady, by Johannesburg), booked to Constitution

A Grade III winner during her racetrack career, Cozze Up Lady brought that same class and talent to the breeding shed, producing GISW Kimari (Munnings). Her 2021 colt by Constitution, now named Tucson, brought seven figures as a yearling and is currently training towards his debut for WinStar/Siena Farm with Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher. We decided to send her back to that leading stallion for 2024.

Embellish the Lace (m, 12, Super Saver–Expanse, by Distant View), booked to Life Is Good

Grade I winner Embellish the Lace has already produced a pair of million-dollar yearlings. One of those seven-figure sellers was a daughter of the great Into Mischief, now two-time winner Pumpkin Scone. We retained that filly's full-sister Into Amore and she is training very well as she prepares for her career bow with Pletcher. Given her success with Into Mischief, we decided to send Embellish the Lace to one of his fastest sons, Life Is Good.

End Times (m, 9, War Front–Last Full Measure, by Empire Maker), booked to Americanrevolution

CHC homebred End Times is the second foal out of Grade I winner and producer Last Full Measure. We sold a lovely Audible filly out of her for $255,000 at this year's KEESEP sale and she has a very nice Improbable yearling filly and newborn colt from the first crop of Nashville. She is one of three mares we are sending to our new stallion, GISW Americanrevolution, as we make our first foray into the New York breeding program.

Last Full Measure (m, 16, Empire Maker–Lazy Slusan, by Slewvescent), booked to Into Mischief

GISW and producer Last Full Measure's offspring have proved quite popular at auction, including her 2022 Constitution filly, who summoned $800,000 at KEESEP last year. The topper at that auction was a $3-million Into Mischief colt out of an Empire Maker mare and that cross is also responsible for MGISW Mandaloun and Grade II winner Laurel River. We hope to add to the success of that cross as Last Full Measure visits Into Mischief this year.

Summer Solo (m, 14, Arch–Summer Solstice {Ire}, by Caerleon), booked to Not This Time

We purchased this GISP mare in 2022 and her first foal for us is a knockout. She is now the dam of two black-type horses thanks to the recent exploits of her daughter Solo Album (Curlin). Arch is phenomenal broodmare sire and Summer Solo has proven to be a versatile broodmare. We are sending her to Not This Time, who has already produced a SW and GSP horse out of an Arch mare in Howling Time.

Yellow Agate (m, 10, Gemologist–Lemon Sorbet, by Lemon Drop Kid), booked to Quality Road

Yellow Agate was CHC's first Grade I winner in America and continues to reward us as a broodmare. She has three winners from three foals of racing age, including GSW and $650,000 KEESEP buy Agate Road (Quality Road). His two older siblings, Gasoline (Curlin) and Plentitude (Quality Road), combined to win five races in 2023 and appear poised to add more black type to this family. Her 2022 filly by Quality Road summoned $650,000 at Saratoga last summer. Given all of her success with Quality Road, it seemed like a no-brainer to send Yellow Agate back to the Lane's End kingpin this year.

PUMPKIN SCONE (Into Mischief), a $1.25-million Keeneland September Yearling purchase by Spendthrift Farm, debuts for Brad Cox from the outside gate on Sunday. Bred in Kentucky by the China Horse Club, the bay filly is out of Embellish the Lace (Super Saver), who has also produced three-time winner and fellow $1.25-million KEESEP graduate Tap the Faith (Tapit). Pumpkin Scone hails from a female family which includes GI Travers S. hero Afleet Express (Afleet Alex) and MGISP My Miss Sophia (Unbridled's Song), the dam of GISW Annapolis (War Front). She will face a pair of debuting homebreds in Juddmonte's Call Again (Arrogate) and Winchell Thoroughbreds's Absinthe (Gun Runner). TJCIS PPS

1st-BEL, $75K, Msw, (S), 2yo, 5f, 1:00 p.m.
A 2-year-old maiden special weight for New York-breds kicks off Belmont's Sunday card. Trained by Mike Maker, the rail-drawn THE WINE STEWARD (Vino Rosso) hails from the first crop of Vino Rosso, who is represented by one winner from five starters. The $340,000 OBS March buy's dam Call to Service (To Honor and Serve) counts MGSW Isotherm (Lonhro {Aus}) as a half-brother and the unraced half-sister Adande (Bwana Charlie), who is responsible for GSW Skelly (Practical Joke). TJCIS PPS

As we approach the opening of the 2023 breeding sheds, the TDN staff is once again sitting down with leading breeders to find out what stallions they have chosen for their mares, and why.

The China Horse Club's Christie DeBernardis, Matt Houldsworth and Michael Smith clued us in on which sires they have chosen for some of their top American and European mares.

ALBEROBELLO (m, 8, Bernardini—Carson Jen, by Carson City), booked to Justify

Alberobello hails from a very deep family that is constantly improving. Her full-sister's daughter Key to My Heart (Ire) produced a $1.3-million filly at KEESEP just a few months ago. Additionally, Bernardini mares are red hot right not. She is expecting just her second foal for us this year (by Uncle Mo) and we will send her back to Justify. We are obviously big fans and supporters of Justify. That faith has been rewarded with his first crop of runners this year and they should only get better with age. This family has already produced a stakes winner by Justify in Justa Warrior.

CARIBBEAN BABE (m, 8, Arch—Kalahari Cat, by Cape Town), booked to Life Is Good

Caribbean Babe is a half-sister to MGSW and young WinStar stallion Independence Hall, as well as two other stakes winners. Her first foal Bold Discovery (Bolt d'Oro) is doing quite well in Europe, following his debut win with a Group 3 placing. She is a young mare, with a good family and by an excellent broodmare sire, so we felt she deserved a spot in the first book of our MGISW Life Is Good.

COZZE UP LADY (m, 14, Cozzene—The White Lady, by Johannesburg), booked to Munnings

This mating was a bit of a no-brainer. A Grade III winner in her own right, Cozze Up Lady's best foal thus far is Grade I-winning millionaire Kimari (Munnings). She returns to that star sprinter's sire this year in hopes of re-creating that magic.

EMBELLISH THE LACE (m, 11, Super Saver—Expanse, by Distant View), booked to Constitution

Embellish the Lace was a Grade I winner at Saratoga and has proven equally talented as a broodmare. She's produced two seven-figure yearlings so far, and another that summoned $700,000. One of those million-dollar babies was Tap the Faith (Tapit), a three-time winner, so we hope that cross will prove successful yet again through Tapit's best son at stud, Constitution.

LAST FULL MEASURE (m, 15, Empire Maker—Lazy Slusan, by Slewvescent), booked to Constitution

Last Full Measure was a Grade I winner in her own right and produced another Grade I winner for us in Valiance (Tapit). She's responsible for a series of six-figure sellers and had her best auction result in 2022 when her Constitution colt brought $1.8 million at KEESEP. On the back of that success, she will be bred back to Constitution.

SAMBUCA CLASSICA (m, 19, Cat Thief—In Her Glory, by Miswaki), booked to Life Is Good

Sambuca Classica is a bit of blue hen, producing four black-type runners, topped by champion Classic Empire. Her 2020 Justify colt, now named Golden Mic, brought $625,000 from Hideyuki Mori at KEESEP and her 2021 colt by that Triple Crown winner summoned $575,000 from WinStar and Siena Farm. Being a proven producer, we felt she was a good match for Life Is Good.

BEATRIX POTTER (m, 18, Cadeaux Genereux {GB}—Great Joy {Ire}, by Grand Lodge), booked to New Bay (GB)
Already a Group 1 producer of Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Beatrix Potter visits emerging young stallion New Bay. She's reaching her twilight years and the great hope would be to get a filly. Last season's yearling by Medaglia D'Oro made 600,000gns from Ben McElroy at Tattersalls Book 1.

FALLING PETALS (m, 11, Raven's Pass—Infinite Spirit, by Maria's Mon), booked to New Bay
Falling Petals, the producer of dual Group 1 winner Saffron Beach (New Bay), who realised 3,600,000gns at last year's Tattersalls December Mare sale, goes back to New Bay. If it's not broke, don't fix it. Last season's yearling, a New Bay colt, fetched €450,000 at Goffs Orby from Amanda Skiffington and goes into training with Saffron Beach's trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam. She also has a weanling full sister, who will likely be retained to race.

LADY LIGHT (GB) (m, 6, Showcasing {GB}—Bird Key {GB}, by Cadeaux Genereux {GB}), booked to Siyouni (Fr)
Lady Light is young stakes-placed mare, a full sister to Shadwell stallion Tasleet and from the immediate family of superstar sprinter Battaash. Her first foal, a filly by Dark Angel, is an excellent first foal. Siyouni is commercially consistent at the top level, both in the sales ring and on the track, and provides a fantastic proven option for a young mare getting going.

TSCHIERSCHEN (Ire) (m, 9, Acclamation {GB}—Roo {GB}, by Rudimentary), booked to State Of Rest (Ire)
Tschierschen is a stakes producing Acclamation mare and dam of Royal Ascot winner Petrotto. She is from the immediate family of Group 1 performers Mohaather, Prize Exhibit and Accidental Agent. A proven mare for the four-time Group 1-winning freshman sire State Of Rest (The Iron Horse).

COASTANA (m, 6, Kitten's Joy—Reachfortheheavens, by Pulpit), booked to New Bay
Coastana was picked up for $290,000 at the recent Keeneland November Sale with the plan of going to Europe to be bred. The stakes-placed mare adds some new blood to the European band and highlights our continued interest in developing families globally. A lovely individual that we thought would really suit New Bay.

MELODIC CHARM (IRE) (m, 6, Exceed and Excel {Aus}–Folk Melody {Ire}, by Street Cry {Ire}), booked to Siyouni
Melodic Charm is a young Exceed and Excel mare recently acquired from Tattersalls. She received a significant pedigree update shortly after her purchase when her half-brother Romantic Warrior (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) won the G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup. She is due to Dark Angel and, therefore, the resulting progeny will be a three-parts brother or sister to Romantic Warrior.

HOURGLASS (IRE) (m, 8, Galileo {Ire}—Hellsinki {GB}, by Machiavellian), booked to Siyouni
Hourglass is a Galileo half-sister to Shamardal and is all class. Her first produce (Just an Hour {Justify}) was placed in his only start to date for Joseph O'Brien and looks to have a very bright future this coming season. Last season's yearling realised €300,000 and her weanling colt by Siyouni is outstanding. As such, going back to Siyouni was an easy call.

Manzanita Stables' well-bred Tap the Faith will make her stakes debut in Saturday's Grade 2, $250,000 Demoiselle, a nine-furlong test for juvenile fillies at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The Demoiselle, which offers 10-4-2-1 Kentucky Oaks qualifying points to the top-four finishers, is slated as Race 9 on Saturday's 10-race program, which is headlined by the Grade 1, $750,000 Cigar Mile and also includes the Grade 2, $250,000 Remsen, which offers 10-4-2-1 Kentucky Derby qualifying points, and the Grade 3, $250,000 Go for Wand. First post is 11:50 a.m. Eastern.

Trained by Christophe Clement, the Tapit bay rallied from last-to-first to win her debut by a head travelling a one-turn mile on Nov. 7 at Belmont Park.

A $1.25 million Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, Tap the Faith is out of the Super Saver mare Embellish the Lace, who captured the 2015 Grade 1 Alabama at the Spa.

“She is very well bred, so it's very exciting for us. She won well first time out,” Clement said.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Bred in Kentucky by China Horse Club International, Tap the Faith has breezed back twice out of her maiden score, including an easy five-eighths in 1:03.21 Saturday over Big Sandy.

Clement said he is hopeful Tap the Faith can impress again while returning on relatively short rest.

“I'm running back a little bit quick in the Demoiselle, but she's been working too well so I've got to go,” Clement said. “She's sound and she looks good. I would have liked an extra week or two, but that's the way it goes. She'll get a rest after this.”

Joel Rosario has the call from post 6.

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher will saddle a pair of strong contenders in Nest and Miss Interpret as he looks to secure a record-extending seventh Demoiselle win.

Pletcher has previously won the Demoiselle with Smok'n Frolic [2001], Ashado [2003], Disposablepleasure [2011], Unlimited Budget [2012], Stopchargingmaria [2013], and Malathaat [2020]. Of that group, Ashado and Malathaat went on to win the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks.

Owned by Repole Stable, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Michael House, Nest has posted a pair of starts over the main track at Belmont Park, including a five-length debut score traveling 1 1/16-miles on September 25 ahead of a close third in the one-mile Tempted last out on November 5.

The Curlin bay, out of the stakes-winning A.P. Indy mare Marion Ravenwood, was purchased for $350,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale and is a full-sister to Grade 1-winner Idol.

Bred in Kentucky by Ashview Farm and Colts Neck Stables, Nest has breezed back twice over the Belmont dirt training track since the Tempted, including a half-mile effort in 49.79 seconds Saturday.

Pletcher said Nest will appreciate the stretch out in distance.

“She should love the mile and an eighth. She had a good work on Saturday morning so she's right on course,” Pletcher said.

Laurie Wolf and Glen Hill Farm's Miss Interpret, by Street Sense, was purchased for $100,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

A maiden winner at third asking sprinting six furlongs over a muddy track at Saratoga Race Course, Miss Interpret rallied to a 1 1/2-length score in her stakes debut in the seven-furlong P.G. Johnson on September 2 at the same track.

Last out, the Kentucky-bred bay failed to fire when eighth in the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades on October 8 at Keeneland.

Nest will leave from post 5 under Irad Ortiz, Jr., while Miss Interpret will emerge from the inside post under Luis Saez.

J.W. Singer's Magic Circle registered a field best 82 Beyer Speed Figure for her second-place effort in the Tempted, finishing a half-length back of Gerrymander.

Trained by Rudy Rodriguez, the Kantharos chestnut graduated by 4 1/2-lengths on debut, after exiting post 2 to best a field of nine maiden fillies sprinting seven furlongs in September at Saratoga.

She followed with a distant fourth in the Grade 1 Frizette, a one-turn mile on October 3 at Belmont won by Echo Zulu by 7 1/4-lengths over Gerrymander. Echo Zulu exited the Frizette to win the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies on November 5 at Del Mar.

Rodriguez said he instructed jockey Manny Franco to sit back and try to close late in the Frizette.

“I wanted to be far back and make one run with her, but sometimes plans don't work out the way you wanted,” Rodriguez said. “When Manny went outside it looked like she would finish second against Echo Zulu, but she got a little tired. I want to blame myself a little bit, I don't think I had her as tight as I wanted to. She still ran good and maybe if she had finished third, I could have taken her to California.”

Rodriguez said the sizable Magic Circle should appreciate her first two-turn test.

“She's a big filly and I don't think it will be a problem for her to stretch out another eighth of a mile, but you don't know until they do it. Hopefully, she's good enough,” Rodriguez said.

The veteran conditioner, who won the 2014 Demoiselle with Condo Commando, said Magic Circle is likely to utilize a stalking trip.

“I think she can settle. She's not the type that needs the lead,” Rodriguez said. “When she broke her maiden she was on the inside and she settled and then made the lead pretty comfortable. So, I know she can take dirt behind horses.”

Bred in Kentucky by Manitou Farm, the $110,000 OBS Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training purchase will exit post 7 with Franco aboard.

NY Final Furlong Racing Stable and Parkland Thoroughbreds' New York-bred Venti Valentine will put her undefeated record on the line when stepping into open company for the first time.

Bred by Final Furlong Racing Stable and Maspeth Stable, the Firing Line chestnut, out of the Medaglia d'Oro mare Glory Gold, is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Espresso Shot.

Trained by Jorge Abreu, Venti Valentine rallied from 6 1/4-lengths off the pace to win her debut by a nose in a six-furlong maiden sprint in September at Belmont. She stretched out to a one-turn mile last out on October 30 to capture the Maid of the Mist by 3 3/4-lengths over a sloppy and sealed Belmont main track.

Venti Valentine will emerge from post 3 under Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez.

Godolphin homebred Nostalgic will make her stakes debut from a 7 3/4-length first-out maiden score traveling 1 1/16-miles over Big Sandy on October 22.

Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, the Medaglia d'Oro bay garnered a 48 Beyer in her debut score. She will exit post 4 under returning rider Jose Ortiz.

Rounding out the field are maiden Full Count Felica [post 8, Tyler Gaffalione], who switches from turf to dirt after hitting the board in two of her three career starts for trainer Chad Summers; and Golden Essence [post 2, Dexter Haddock], a maiden winner at fourth asking last out on November 8 at Parx for trainer Uriah St. Lewis

The bay was consigned to the sale by Bluewater Sales on behalf of China Horse Club International, which paid $2.4 million for Embellish the Lace, in foal to Uncle Mo, at Fasig-Tipton November in 2016. It is the second produce from the mare to make better than $1 million at public auction, as the 2-year-old filly Tap the Faith (Tapit) was purchased by Claiborne Farm for the identical $1.25 million at this sale last year and returned to the worktab at Belmont Park Sept. 11. The 3-year-old filly Classique (Pioneerof the Nile) realized $700,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga in 2019.

Claiborne Farm, agent, paid $1.25 million for a filly by leading sire Tapit out of Grade 1 winner Embellish the Lace to top today's first session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale on a day marked by brisk trade and the sale of five horses for $1 million or more.

On Sunday, the first of two sessions of the prestigious Book 1 catalog, Keeneland sold 109 yearlings for a total of $40,680,000, for an average of $373,211 and a median of $330,000.

“We're so happy to be having a September Yearling Sale,” Keeneland President-Elect and Interim Head of Sales Shannon Arvin said. “It was great to have people on the grounds. It was great to have trade. It was great to see people following (COVID-19) protocols so we can continue to have trade. It was a good day overall.”

Keeneland is conducting the September Sale, which continues through Sept. 25, amid COVID-19 protocols designed to create the safest sales environment possible. The sale is offering online and expanded phone bidding to enable buyers to participate remotely. Keeneland also has increased the number of bidding locations on the sales grounds to enable buyers to maintain proper social distancing. The new location at the Show Barn directly outside the Sales Pavilion proved popular with bidders.

Russell said five horses in the Sunday session sold via online bidding with one yearling purchased by a domestic buyer while the other four horses were sold to international buyers.

“The mechanics of the Internet bidding worked really well,” Arvin said. “We spent a lot of time practicing and preparing for that. It was great that it worked out as well as we expected it would.”

“Just to have a sale met our expectations,” Keeneland Director of Sales Operations Geoffrey Russell said. “We're very happy it's September at Keeneland and we're having a horse sale. To have competitive bidding at all levels of the market was very rewarding. The resiliency of this industry is unbelievable. For what everyone has been through, we appreciate all the buyers who are here and we wish them all success.”

During Sunday's session, fillies commanded the four-highest prices.

The session-topping Tapit filly, who was consigned by Bluewater Sales, agent, is out of Grade 1 Alabama winner Embellish the Lace, by Super Saver, and from the family of Grade 1 winners Afleet Express and Materiality.

Claiborne Stallion Seasons and Bloodstock Manager Bernie Sams signed the ticket for the filly.

“This is for a Claiborne client,” Sams said. “He is going to try to buy a couple more fillies and build a broodmare band in the next few years. He wanted a Tapit filly. I saw her for the first time here a few days ago. (My first impression was that she is a) pretty, athletic filly. She is from a young mare from a family that could run. (With Tapit) it is a good cross.”

“You just never know what is going to happen even though she had all of the interest,” Bluewater owner Meg Levy told TVG. “She jumped through all the hoops. I am really, really thrilled that Claiborne's client ended up getting her. She is such a queen. This filly did everything right the entire time.”

Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm paid $1.1 million for a daughter of Medaglia d'Oro who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and sire Constitution, Group 2 winner Boynton and Group 3 winner Jacaranda. Denali Stud, agent, consigned the filly, who is out of the Grade 3-placed winner Baffled, by Distorted Humor.

“We are not looking for collectable (broodmares); we are looking for a racehorse first,” said Todd Quast, who signed the ticket. “She obviously has great broodmare potential. She checked all the boxes for us. She is very athletic with a super, super shoulder like the Medaglia d'Oros have. We are happy to have her.”

Mike Ryan, agent, paid $1.05 million for a daughter of War Front who is a full sister to European champion and multiple Group 1 winner Air Force Blue. Out of the stakes-placed Maria's Mon mare Chatham, she was consigned by breeder Stone Farm.

“This is for a client I started to buy a few horses for last year,” Ryan said. “He has been in racing awhile. This filly probably will go to Europe. She will start out there. Being a full sister to champion Air Force Blue, you would have to think she will love the turf. She looks to me like a filly who will run in the states on the dirt. She's looks more to me like a dirt horse, but we know she will handle the grass. Hopefully she will do some good in Europe and we bring her back here later in her career.”

Ryan said he “thought she was an exceptional physical when I saw her at Stone Farm on (Aug. 28). She is a May foal and is very well grown for her age. Stone Farm raises good horses, and it is nice to buy from people who consistently raise good horses.”

Gainesway, agent, sold two yearlings – a daughter of Quality Road and a colt by Into Mischief – for $1 million each.

The Quality Road filly was purchased by Donato Lanni, agent. Out of the Grade 3-placed Ghostzapper mare Beloveda, she is from the family of Grade 3 winners Voyagers Quest and Golden Mystery.

Larry Best's OXO Equine paid $1 million for the son of Into Mischief out of Grade 2-placed winner Curlina, by Cuvee, to make him the session's high-priced colt. Best, who has a well-known affinity for progeny of Into Mischief, said, “I was looking for a good colt – I seem to collect the fillies.”

Asked about the market on opening day of the September Sale, Best said, “Based on what I've heard and seen today, the market's a little stronger than what I anticipated. There's a lot of buyers here paying a lot of money for good horses. So that's a good sign for the industry. I hope it continues.”

Lanni, agent for SF/Starlight/Madaket, was the session's leading buyer, spending $4.17 million for eight horses.

The leading consignor was Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, which sold 22 horses for $7.26 million.

The second session of the September Sale starts tomorrow at noon ET. The entire sale is streamed live at Keeneland.com.

A Tapit filly out of the 2015 GI Alabama S. heroine Embellish the Lace (Super Saver) caught the attention of a number of high-end buyers, and was ultimately landed Sunday by Claiborne Farm’s Bernie Sams, who was bidding on behalf of an undisclosed client of the storied nursery. The bay was consigned to the sale by Bluewater Sales as hip 149 and offered on behalf of her breeder, China Horse Club.

“He’s bought a couple mares and he bought a nice yearling filly last year,” Sams said of the buyer. “He’s trying to buy a couple more fillies and build a broodmare band over the next few years and we will see where we go. He wanted a Tapit filly, so there we go.”

He continued, “She’s a pretty filly and very athletic. A nice family out of a young mare that could run. It’s a good cross. We had hoped she would be cheaper.”

Bluewater’s Meg Levy said hip 149 had been plenty popular back at the barn and in the repository.

“It’s a strange year, 2020, and this was the first horse we were bringing to the ring in Book 1. So, while we expected that she could be in that range, you just never know,” Levy offered. “It seemed like all the right people were on her. She’s been nothing but a queen, and she put all the pieces together. The market is increasingly physically demanding and there were just no holes. She had the page and the physical. She was vetted about 14 times, and it seemed like everyone showed up, so fair value.”

Embellish the Lace was a $320,000 buy here in 2013 by Alex and JoAnn Lieblong. The half-sister to 2010 GI Travers S. Winner Afleet Express (Afleet Alex) RNA’d for $1.9 million at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton November sale and brought $2.4 million from China Horse Club a year later while in foal to Uncle Mo. Her now 2-year-old filly Classique (Pioneerof the Nile) was a $700,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga grad of last year, and Embellish the Lace produced a filly by red-hot Into Mischief this term.

While China Horse Club founder and chairman Teo Ah Khing was unable to travel to Kentucky due to the coronavirus pandemic, he stayed up until 4:00 a.m. local time to watch hip 149 sell from his home in Singapore.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with this result,” he said. “The mare is class. She’s putting down beautiful stock, just what we hoped for when purchasing her. She was well raised by both WinStar and Bluewater and it’s a privilege to offer fillies like her, although always sad to see them go.”

As for the market dynamics in these uncertain times, the international businessman said, “It’s about keeping confidence in the market. You can’t look at the micro. It’s a long-term view and it’s about keeping conviction in the industry. These times will pass—it’s a matter of just getting on with it under the environment we face. We aren’t immune, but we are doing a great job under the conditions.”
