Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Thursday's Observations features a full-sister to dual juvenile Group 1 winner Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal).

5.00 Southwell, Novice, £7,300, 3yo, 8f 13y (AWT)
SHARP FRANK (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is an intriguing newcomer for his owner-breeders Cayton Park Stud, being a son of the GII Lake Placid S. winner and GI Garden City S.-placed Sharp Susan (Touch Gold), who was a $2-million purchase at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton Select November Mixed Sale. Andrew Balding has charge of the March-foaled half-brother to the multiple South African Group 1 winner Oh Susanna (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) and dual Group 1-placed Signore Fox (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}).
7.30 Wolverhampton, Novice, £8,700, 3yo/up, f/m, 7f 36y (AWT)
CALLISTO MOON (GB) (Shamardal) is the third foal out of the G1 Fillies' Mile third Winters Moon (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), with the first being Shamardal's surprisingly speedy Earthlight (Ire) who captured the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. Charlie Appleby introduces the March-foaled chestnut against some experienced peers, but she will be feared from a stable whose strike-rate on the all-weather speaks for itself.

Dubawi (Ire) (Dubai Millennium {GB}) will stand for an unchanged fee of £250,000 at Dalham Hall Stud and anchors the 2022 roster for Darley Europe. His fee is the most expensive in Europe.

He enjoyed a notable success at the two-day Breeders' Cup World Championships, with three winners in a single year, the first sire to reach that mark in the 37-year history of the Breeders' Cup. The GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf went to Modern Games (Ire), Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Mile was won by new Kildangan Stud resident Space Blues (Ire) and Dubawi's trio was rounded out by the victory of Yibir (GB) in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf. In addition, Dubawi is the world's leading sire of group winners with 23 and stakes winners at 37.

A trio of new stallions will join the Darley Europe roster in 2022, with Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) leading the way at £55,000 at Dalham Hall. One of the most brilliant milers seen in recent years with five Group 1 victories to his name, the son of Kingman won the G1 St. James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot in 2020 and later scored a victory in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois. Kept in training in 2021, he added another trio of top-flight races-the G1 Lockinge S. at Sandown, Royal Ascot's G1 Queen Anne S. and a second edition of the Marois. The ultra-consistent bay retires with nine wins in 11 starts and $2,408,980 in earnings, rounded out by a neck second in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. on QIPCO British Champions Day.

Making his debut at Kildangan Stud is Space Blues, fresh off his Breeders' Cup Mile win. Priced at €17,500, the son of Miss Lucifer (Fr) (Noverre) captured the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest in 2020 and also added the G1 Prix de la Foret prior to his Mile tally. He retires with a mark of 19-11-3-1 and $2,585,725 in earnings.

Undefeated as a juvenile including in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, Victor Ludorum (GB) (Shamardal) progressed to take the G1 French 2000 Guineas at three. Out of Antiquities (GB) (Kaldounevees {Fr}), his fee will be €15,000 at Haras du Logis. He also took the G3 Prix Messidor as a 4-year-old and brings a mark of 14-5-0-5 and $864,838 to stud.

Dubawi's son Night of Thunder (Ire) sired a pair of Group 1 winners in 2021 and he will command €75,000, tops of the Kildangan Stud roster. Thundering Nights (Ire) won the GI Pretty Polly S., while Kukeracha (NZ) was in action Down Under in the G1 Queensland Derby. They are two of 12 2021 black-type winners for their sire, who also sired four other group winners this year, among them Suesa (Ire) and GIII Athenia S. winner Pocket Square (GB).

Standing at £45,000 in 2022 is Too Darn Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) at Dalham Hall. Flawless in a juvenile campaign that culminated in a victory in the G1 Dewhurst S., the bay backed up that form with another pair of Group 1 wins as a 3-year-old in the G1 Prix Jean Prat and G1 Sussex S. The son of Dar Re Mi (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) was also Classic placed with a runner-up performance in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas.

Esteemed sprinter Blue Point (Ire) (Shamardal) will stand for €40,000 at Kildangan. A dual winner of the G1 King's Stand S., the bay also won the G1 Diamond Jubilee and G1 Al Quoz Sprint. Both Too Darn Hot and Blue Point will have their first yearlings in 2022.

Three-time Group 1 winner Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) is expecting is first foals in 2022, and will stand for £35,000 at Dalham Hall. Also welcoming their first progeny in 2022 are the Kildangan duo of Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) at €25,000, a four-time top-level hero, and Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal) at €18,000. The latter landed a pair of juvenile Group 1s in 2019-the Prix Morny and the Middle Park S.

Two stallions that celebrated black-type success with their first runners this season were Profitable (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}). The Kildangan residents will each stand for €12,500. The only stallion to receive a fee increase across the entire roster, Profitable sired 25 winners this year so far, and already has a group winner with G2 Queen Mary S. victress Quick Suzy (Ire). Ribchester has Listed Doncaster S. winner Flaming Rib (Ire) to date.

Dalham stalwarts and Group 1 sires New Approach (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic) are listed as private and £17,500, respectively. In Ireland, fellow Group 1 sire Teofilo (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) will command €30,000. See below for the full 2022 Darley Europe roster.

Sam Bullard, Director of Stallions, said, “We are thrilled to be introducing three outstanding multiple Group 1 winners to a very strong roster, deep on quality and achievement. Following last year's three champion additions in Ghaiyyath, Earthlight and Pinatubo together with Blue Point and Too Darn Hot in 2020, we are confident of giving breeders every chance of benefitting from the wonderfully positive sales season we have just enjoyed.”

On the back of the eagerly anticipated stallion fee announcements in Europe, Gary King spoke with a number of leading industry figures about value. Today we hear from Joseph Burke.

GK: Who have you identified as a first-year stallion at an appealing opening fee?

JB: I must admit that whilst I have not inspected any of the first-season sires yet, on paper I expected Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal) to be standing for a little more than €20,000. So I booked one of our better mares to him, a Group 3-winning 2-year-old currently carrying her second foal to Night Of Thunder (Ire), as soon as I read about his fee via a TDN alert whilst in Lexington. For a horse who finished his career rated just two pounds behind another leading 2-year-old and freshman son of Shamardal in Pinatubo (Ire), it would appear the value lies with Earthlight given that Pinatubo has been pitched at £35,000.

Kameko (Kitten’s Joy) is also very competitively priced at £25,000 and I would definitely be using him were it not for the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. Breeding is difficult enough without all the hassle Brexit could potentially entail next season, something the chair of Britain’s Thoroughbred Industries Steering Group confirmed when he advised members “not to schedule movements for the first two weeks of 2021.” Nevertheless, Kameko has to rate a very attractive prospect for breeders with mares based in England.

In the U.S. we have booked two mares to Game Winner (Candy Ride {Arg}) whom I think is comfortably the best value first-season sire over there for 2021, priced at $30,000.

GK: Best value proven stallion, and why?

JB: To me this is a no-brainer. In the breeding game, the evidence is often there in black and white for anybody willing to do their own independent research and place a lot of stock in statistics. That said, a mere glance is all that’s needed at the second-crop sire’s results for 2020 illustrates that Make Believe (GB) (Makfi {GB}) is the only stallion to have sired a Group 1 winner in Mishriff (Ire), and not just any ordinary top level winner but a Classic winner who has inherited his sire’s turn of foot. Mishriff is the shortest price of any English-trained horse to take next year’s Arc, a trip he might possibly get as a 4-year-old.

Make Believe has also sired three individual group winners including the multiple Group 3 winner Rose Of Kildare (Ire). He’s a correct horse whom you can rely upon to throw a good physical. Oghill House Stud sold the full-brother to Rose Of Kildare for 175,000gns at Book 2 this year, and he is priced at €15,000.

From a commercial perspective, it is essential to go to stallions who don’t cover huge books and with that in mind, Ballylinch manages him very well which gives breeders a better opportunity to earn a decent return in the sales ring. In fact, when you look at the overall sire list, of those with more than three winners in 2020, no other living stallion in GB or Ireland has a higher percentage of winners-to-runners this year, not a single one. He has a pretty outstanding 47% strike rate with 28 winners from 59 runners. In his short career thus far, he is outperforming his contemporaries on every level and most of the established sires as well. As the clock at the old Curragh racecourse famously stated ‘Time discloses all’, but I don’t think one requires hindsight to see that Make Believe is the best-value proven sire who is only going one way.

In the U.S., Twirling Candy (Candy Ride {Arg}) at $40,000 and Munnings (Speightstown) at $50,000 appeal in this category.

GK: Who would you consider to be an under the radar stallion?

JB: Elzaam (Aus) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) has an overall strike rate of 42% winners-to-runners and has sired 12 stakes horses including the G1 Matron S. winner on Irish Champions Weekend, as well as the runner-up in the Hong Kong Derby. Yet Elzaam is available at just €5,000 for 2021. I think that is surely the definition of under the radar.

On the back of the eagerly anticipated stallion fee announcements in Europe, Gary King spoke with a number of leading industry figures about value. Today we hear from Cathy Grassick.

GK: Who have you identified as a first-year stallion at an appealing opening fee?

CG: Earthlight (Ire) is excellent value retiring to stud at €20,000 for a dual Group 1-winning 2-year-old by Shamardal. First season with runners, for me Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) is really good value considering his sales results and the type of yearling he produced. He is standing at €17,500 down from €30,000 for his first year at stud. He was such a good 2-year-old, breaking his maiden in the G2 Mill Reef and his father Iffraaj was himself a top first-season sire.

GK: Best value proven stallion, and why?

CG: I think Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili (GB}) is really great value at €20,000. He is capable of getting performers at the highest level, both colts and fillies, such as Thunder Moon (Ire) and Fleeting (Ire). He is a solid source of 2-year-olds and is even starting to look like a broodmare sire of note with the likes of Tiger Tanaka (Ire).

Kendargent (Fr) (Kendor {Fr}) in France is also super value at €10,000 for very much similar reasons. He is an excellent source of top class racehorses and is becoming a broodmare sire of note.

GK: Who would you consider to be an under the radar stallion?

CG: I think Equiano (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}) in his new home at the Irish National Stud for just €3,000 is really great value and a stallion very much under the radar. He had such a good year in 2020 and provides a good source of solid speed to Irish breeders.

The Darley Europe roster, featuring new stallions Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}-Nightime {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal-Lava Flow {Ire}, by Dalakhani {Ire}) and Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal-Winters Moon {Ire}, by New Approach {Ire}), has been announced. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, most fees have been reduced, some by 25% or more.

Leading the overall roster is veteran Dubawi (Ire) (Dubai Millennium {GB}), who will stand for £250,000 at Dalham Hall Stud. The sire of four Group 1 winners this year along, including the brilliant MG1SW Ghaiyyath, his progeny have struck an additional 17 times at black-type level in 2020.

Outstanding juvenile Pinatubo’s fee is £35,000 at Dalham Hall. Rated the best juvenile in Europe in the past 25 years, the 2019 English/Irish highweight’s undefeated 2-year-old season included victories in the G1 National S., and G1 Dewhurst S. At three, he added the G1 Prix Jean Prat, ran second in the G1 Prix du Moulin and G1 St. James’s Palace S. and was Classic placed with a third in the G1 2000 Guineas.

The aforementioned Ghaiyyath is priced at €30,000 at Kildangan Stud in Ireland. The four-time Group 1 winner struck three times at the highest level this term, collecting scintillating victories in the G1 Coronation Cup, G1 Eclipse S., and the G1 Juddmonte International. French champion juvenile Earthlight will also hold court at Kildangan. Undefeated at two, the 2019 G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. hero’s fee has been set at €20,000.

“We know that breeders are facing unpredictable times and have reflected this in our fees, in Europe and the United States,” said Liam O’Rourke, Director of Stud, Stallions & Breeding at Darley. We’ve aimed to be supportive in our approach for 2021 and we trust breeders can take advantage of what we believe is our strongest roster ever–yet one that is keenly priced.

“We are thankful to all the breeders who have used our stallions in the past and we look forward to offering them the best opportunities for the future. We have three very exciting new stallions joining the ranks, giving us every confidence that 2021 and beyond will see more success.”

Of the established stallions, Night of Thunder (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), whose oldest foals are three, has continued to enhance his reputation, with 10 black-type winners on the year, half of them at the group level. His fee has been increased at Kildangan to €75,000.

Kildangan veteran Teofilo (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has enjoyed a successful year at stud, his 12 stakes winners featuring six Group 1 winners alone ranging from G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud victor Gear Up (Ire), to G1 Prix Royal Oak hero Subjectivist (GB) and G1 Melbourne Cup winner Twilight Payment (Ire). He is priced at €30,000.

Expecting his first foals in 2021, MG1SW Too Darn Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) will command £45,000 at Dalham Hall, while the veteran Group 1 sire New Approach (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is listed as private. Also at Dalham Hall, both Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), whose oldest foals are 3-year-olds this term and former shuttle stallion Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic) are both at £20,000. Champion Cracksman (GB) (Frankel {GB}) will have yearlings of 2021 and is priced at £17,500.

Rounding out the Dalham Hall roster are Farhh (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) at a private fee, G1 Derby winner Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) at £14,000, Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) at £12,500, Territories (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), the sire of two black-type winners in his first crop, is at £10,000, Postponed (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is at £7,500 and both Charming Thought (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Outstrip (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) are valued at £4,000.

MG1SW Blue Point (Ire) (Shamardal), who covered his first book of mares this spring, will stand for €40,000 alongside fellow Kildangan resident and top miler Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) at €17,500. For €10,000 apiece, breeders can access Belardo (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire})-already the sire of three stakes winners in his first crop–and Profitable (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), while roster veteran Raven’s Pass (Elusive Quality) is €7,500 and Buratino (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus})’s fee has been set at €5,000. Exceed and Excel (Aus) (Danehill) will not be shuttling from his Australian base in 2021.

In France, a quartet of stallions are standing at Haras du Logis. Cloth of Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) who has his first yearlings next year, is at €7,000, while Ultra (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}), set for his first runners in 2021, is €5,000. The pair of Bow Creek (Ire) (Shamardal) and Hunter’s Light (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will both command €4,000. The former has first 3-year-olds and the latter has first 4-year-olds next year.

Added Darley Director of Stallions Sam Bullard, “It is a source of great pride that the best horse in the world this year and the best 2-year-old for a generation are not just retiring to Darley having raced for Godolphin, but are themselves the sons of Darley stallions. That, and the value we are offering to breeders, makes us very optimistic about the future.

“While 2020 has undoubtedly been a challenge, there has been remarkable resilience in parts of the yearling market, and buyers have shown great confidence in the product of European breeders’ labours.

“We are confident that, with the support of our breeders and their mares, the Darley stallions will continue to breed the star horses of the future.”

Godolphin’s Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal) suffered a first defeat in Deauville’s G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest last month and last term’s G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. hero bounced back in style, under a supremely confident Mickael Barzalona, to garner Sunday’s G3 Qatar Prix du Pin at ParisLongchamp. Settled off fast early fractions in seventh after breaking to the fore, the 9-10 pick made smooth headway on the bridle into contention passing the quarter-mile marker and unleashed a familiar burst once shaken up for the lead with 150 metres remaining to deny stablemate Tropbeau (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) by an ultimately comfortable 3/4-of-a-length.

“Earthlight is such a lovely horse with a great attitude and he showed us what we knew he was capable of today,” said Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard. “Mickael felt that he didn’t have the best trip and was wide the whole way, which makes it a pretty long way round when you are going to the second winning-post here. He said that Earthlight was brave and will come on for the race. He was having a good blow afterwards, he’s quite a heavy horse who needs plenty of work and plenty of racing, so that will do him good. Andre [Fabre] is confident that Earthlight could stay a mile, but options are running out at this time of year, so I would imagine that the G1 Prix de la Foret would be one of the main races that come into consideration.”

The trainer concurred, saying, “He didn’t run badly in his last race, but sprinting for the first time against older horses is a a different story and not easy. Of course, he will now come back [over seven furlongs here] in the [Oct. 4 G1] Prix de la Foret.”

Earthlight is the first foal bred from G1 Fillies’ Mile runner-up Winters Moon (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), whose own dam Summertime Legacy (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) took the G3 Prix des Reservoirs and ran third in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary. Summertime Legacy has four stakes performers to her credit, headed by G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud victor Mandaean (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) and G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Wavering (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}), herself the dam of the G3 Prix de Flore second Switching (Street Cry {Ire}) and G3 Prix Chloe placegetter Flowrider (Street Cry {Ire}). Summertime Legacy is the leading performer for Zawaahy (El Gran Senor), who in turn is kin to G1 Epsom Derby hero Golden Fleece (Nijinsky) and the stakes-producing Listed Modesty H. victrix Office Wife (Secretariat). From a family featuring GI Belmont S.-winning sire Jaipur (Nasrullah) and GSW sire Be My Guest (Northern Dancer), Winters Moon has a 2-year-old filly by Dubawi (Ire) and a yearling full-sister to Earthlight and a weanling filly by Dubawi (Ire) to come.

Godolphin’s unbeaten Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal), a winner of the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. as a juvenile, is a potential runner in the upcoming G1 Qatar Sussex S. at Goodwood on July 29. Although injury kept him from the G1 French 2000 Guineas, he resurfaced to take a listed race at ParisLongchamp the same day as Godolphin’s champion and MG1SW Pinatubo (GB) (Shamardal) claimed the G1 Prix Jean Prat. The one-mile feature is also the next likely target for G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas hero Kameko (Kitten’s Joy), G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas victor Siskin (First Defence), MGSW Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), and Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who won 2019’s G1 St James’s Palace S. and G1 Prix du Moulin, as well as this term’s G1 Queen Anne S.

“We haven’t totally decided yet,” said trainer Andre Fabre. “He could go to Goodwood, but if not he will go for the G1 Maurice de Gheest [on Aug. 9]. He’s very fast and looks a real sprinter, but I’m convinced that he can go further. I think it was a good decision to split him and Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) up last time and it will be up to Sheikh Mohammed where he runs.”

Recovered from an injury which forced the abandonment of any and all plans for this term’s rescheduled one-mile Classics, the belated reintroduction of Godolphin’s homebred Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal) in Sunday’s Listed Qatar Prix Kistena at Deauville was as straightforward as starting odds of 2-5 might suggest and the Andre Fabre trainee maintained his perfect record, going six-for-six, with an impressive 2 1/2-length dismissal of Wanaway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) in the six-furlong dash. Settled under cover in sixth after an alert departure from the outside stall, last term’s G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. hero eased into the clear at halfway and was hard on the steel until shaken up for control passing the eighth pole, powering clear with familiar gusto to score by daylight.

“It is a relief to see him win like he did,” said Godolphin’s Lisa Jane Graffard. “He was relaxed and very professional and you can see that the quality is still there. It has been almost a year off, but the lockdown and the setback might have been a blessing in disguise as it gave him more time to grow and mature. We will see how he comes out of the race and Sheikh Mohamed and Andre Fabre will decide on his near future.”

Summertime Legacy has four stakes performers to her credit, headed by G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud victor Mandaean (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) and G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Wavering (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}). Summertime Legacy is herself the leading performer for Zawaahy (El Gran Senor), who in turn is kin to G1 Epsom Derby hero Golden Fleece (Nijinsky) and the stakes-producing Listed Modesty H. victrix Office Wife (Secretariat). From a family featuring GI Belmont S.-winning sire Jaipur (Nasrullah) and GSW sire Be My Guest (Northern Dancer), Winters Moon has a 2-year-old filly by Dubawi (Ire) and a yearling full-sister to Earthlight to come.

The former, an unbeaten champion at two for trainer Charlie Appleby, ran third in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas early last month, before a runner-up performance in the G1 St James’s Palace S. at Royal Ascot on June 20. He will represent the royal blue in the Jean Prat, while Andre Fabre trainee Earthlight, who won the G1 Middle Part S. and G1 Prix Morny as a juvenile, will contest the Listed Prix Kistena on the undercard on Sunday. Also undefeated, Earthlight will make his 3-year-old bow and sixth racecourse appearance in the Kistena, as a minor injury kept him on the bench through the spring.

“Earthlight is in great form and will run in the Prix Kistena on Sunday,” Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard confirmed to Racing Post.
