Multiple Group 1 winner A Case Of You (Ire) (Hot Streak {Ire}–Karjera {Ire}, by Key Of Luck) will enter stud at Drakenstein Stud in South Africa later this year, Sporting Post reported on Thursday. The deal was brokered by Robin Bruss of Northfields Bloodstock.

Bred by Limestone and Tara Studs in Ireland, the Gary Devlin-owned entire claimed the G3 Anglesey S. at two, before going on to take the G3 Lacken S. at three. He progressed that year to run second in the G1 Flying Five S. and later won the G1 Prix de l'Abbaye by a nose in October of 2021. Trying Meydan in March of 2022, he ran second in the G3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint, and then added the G1 Al Quoz Sprint later that month. Purchased by Australian interests, he traveled Down Under in March of 2023 and raced four more times before retiring with a mark of 22-7-2-3 and $1,427,755.

“A Case Of You represented a great opportunity to get a terrifically fast horse with different bloodlines into South Africa,” Drakenstein said in a statement. “We are excited to stand him and look forward to his career going forward.”

The son of Hot Streak, who is from the family of stakes winner Akanti (Ire) (Key Of Luck) and G3 Prix Gladiateur winner Big Call (Animal Kingdom), is in the process of being syndicated and will stand alongside What A Winter (SAf), One World (SAf), Futura (SAf), Jet Dark (SAf), and Charles Dickens (SAf) for the upcoming breeding season.

South African wunderkind Charles Dickens (SAf) (Trippi–Demanding Lady (SAf), by Dynasty {SAf}) has been retired to Drakenstein Stud in South Africa, according to published reports.

Bred and raced by Drakenstein, the 4-year-old won 10 of his 13 starts and was placed in his other three for total earnings of R5,119,813 (£211,799/€247,085/$268,544). An undefeated stakes winner at two, the chestnut went six-for-eight at three with a score in the G1 Cape Guineas, followed by runner-up efforts in the G1 L'Ormarins King's Plate and G1 Cape Derby. Back in the winner's enclosure with a victory in the G2 Guineas, he added the G1 Gold Challenge in his sophomore finale. His final three starts were a half-length win in the G3 Matchem S. this October, a third in the G2 Green Point S. in December, and he signed off with a victory in the 2024 L'Ormarins King's Plate this month, a “Win And You're In” for the 2024 GI Breeders' Cup Mile.

Drakenstein's Gaynor Rupert told TBA South Africa, “Retiring Charles Dickens was a very hard decision to make. I would have loved to have seen him race until the end of the season, he would undoubtedly have won a few more big races but he has nothing left to prove.

“It is in the interest of the horse and of the shareholders that after much consultation, we decided to retire him and give him plenty of time off before the start of the breeding season.

He was blessed with speed, an incredible turn of foot, sheer brilliance, intelligence and remarkable cadence. I'm sure he will pass these traits on to his future progeny and we can't wait to see them.”

The Equus Champion 3-Year-Old and Equus Champion Miler is out of South African Broodmare of the Year Demanding Lady, who won the G2 Ipi Tombe Challenge. Charles Dickens is a full-brother to the G1 Cape Derby runner-up Charles (SAf) (Trippi) and to the stakes-winning Somerset Maugham (SAf) (Trippi), who was third in a pair of Grade 3s. This is the extended family of Group 1 winners War Command (War Front) and Rollout The Carpet (Aus) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who was also the champion 2-year-old filly in New Zealand.

The Cape Winter Mixed Sale, held June 16 at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, South Africa, posted strong increases over the same sale a year ago, Cape Racing Sales announced on Monday.

Overall, 129 lots of 169 offered were listed as sold for a R12.47 million (€628,000) aggregate, which produced an average of R96,667 (€4,879)–up from last year's average of around R80,000 (€4,030)–and a median of R60,000 (€3,023).

The 16-year-old mare Louvre (SAf) (Doowaley {Ire}) brought R900,000 (€45,344) from Jono Snaith/Philaris Ltd. to claim top price for the sale. Drakenstein Stud Ltd., agent, consigned the Group 2 winner, who is the dam of G1 Turffontein Horse Chestnut S. winner Trip of Fortune (SAf) (Trippi). Overall Snaith was the highest buyer, securing four lots for R1.31 million (€66,000).

“This sale showed a resurgence in the buyers bench. I saw a few old faces coming from the woodwork,” Snatih said. “It was encouraging and I believe the interest was revived as a result of Cape Racing's latest incentives. The venue was beautifully renovated, the atmosphere was good and we enjoyed ourselves. This is the way of the future for bloodstock auction sales, and Cape Town remains the ideal city to host them.”

Drakenstein's Gaynor Rupert is now part-owner of the bay.

The R200,000 BSA April yearling won Grade 1s at ages two, three, four and five and was named 2020/21 Equus Champion 3-year-old Colt, 2020/21 and 2021/22 Equus Champion Miler, 2021/22 Equus Champion Older Male and 2021/22 Equus Champion Middle Distance Horse. He heads to the breeding shed with a record of 19-9-3-2, R5,697,850 and a final victory in the G1 WSB Cape Met over 10 furlongs on Jan. 28.

“Jet Dark was an incredibly easy horse to train,” trainer Justin Snaith said. “He was a gentleman with the most kind temperament which allowed me to get the best of him while retiring him completely sound. I will be sad to see him go as I believe he

had a few Group 1s left in the tank. I cannot wait to buy his yearlings.”

A half-brother to Grade 3-placed Night Ruler (SAf) (Kingsbarns {Ire}), Jet Dark will stand for a fee of R30,000 for his first season. G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero and sire Peintre Celebre is under the fourth dam.

Multiple Group 1 winner and sire Duke Of Marmalade (Ire) (Danehill–Love Me True, by Kingmambo) died in his paddock at Drakenstein Stud in South Africa on Friday. The 17-year-old had been pensioned in October.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Duke Of Marmalade,” Drakenstein Stud tweeted on Friday. “He died peacefully in his paddock this morning. He was a hero to many on the racetrack including ourselves, and a true gentleman at stud.

“His legacy will live on through his progeny to come and his already growing influence as a broodmare sire around the world. He will be sorely missed by all of us at Drakenstein Stud. He lived up to his title as a Duke in every way. RIP.”

Bred by Southern Bloodstock and raced by the Coolmore Partners, the bay showed ability at two when placed in the G2 Vintage S. Winless at three, he did place thrice at the highest table in the St. James's Palace S., the Irish Champion S. and Queen Elizabeth II S. At four the son of Love Me True dazzled with five consecutive Group 1 wins–the Prix Ganay, the Tattersalls Gold Cup, the Prince of Wales's S., the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. and finally the G1 Juddmonte International S.

Originally based at Coolmore Stud in Ireland from 2009 to 2013, the half-brother to G1 Derby hero Ruler of the World (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) moved to Drakenstein Stud in 2014. The bay sired a total of 46 black-type winners internationally, 26 at the group level. His best runners were a septet of Group 1 winners led by G1 St Leger winner Simple Verse (Ire), G1 Gold Cup hero Big Orange (GB), and G1 Prix de Diane heroine Star of Seville (GB).

As a broodmare sire, his daughters have foaled seven black-type winners with six group scorers in England, France and Italy.

Five-time Group 1 winner Duke of Marmalade (Ire) (Danehill–Love Me True, by Kingmambo) has been pensioned from stallion duty on veterinary advice, Drakenstein Stud announced via Twitter on Wednesday.

Bred by Southern Bloodstock, the bay raced for Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor. A winner at two for Aidan O'Brien, Duke of Marmalade was also second in the G2 Vintage S. At three the colt did not win, but placed three times in Group 1 company when second in the St. James's Palace S. and the Irish Champion S. and third in the Queen Elizabeth II S.

Kept in training at four, the half-brother to G1 Derby winner Ruler of the World (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) reeled off five consecutive Group 1 wins from seven starts-the Prix Ganay, the Tattersalls Gold Cup, Royal Ascot's Prince of Wales's S., the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. and finally the G1 Juddmonte International S. Unplaced in his final two runs–the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the GI Breeders' Cup Classic–his record at retirement stood at 16-6-4-1 and $2,777,768 in earnings.

“Duke of Marmalade has been retired from the breeding shed on veterinary advice,” the stud tweeted. “He will live out his days at Drakenstein Stud and watch from his paddock his every growing influence as a broodmare sire around the world.”

Retired to Coolmore Stud in Ireland where he covered mares from 2009 through 2013, Duke of Marmalade moved to South Africa's Drakenstein Stud for the 2014 season. As a broodmare sire, his six of his seven black-type winners were at the group level.

Also a half-brother to group winners Norway (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Annus Mirabilis (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), Duke of Marmalade's female family traces to the prolific producer Lassie Dear (Buckpasser) as his third dam, responsible for Group 1 winner and sire Wolfhound (Nureyev) and dual Grade III winner and GI La Canada S. second Weekend Surprise (Secretariat). The latter foaled American Horse of the Year and top sire A.P. Indy (Seattle Slew).

Lancaster Bomber, an Irish Group 1 winner who finished second in two Breeders' Cup races, died Tuesday of an apparent heart attach, South Africa's Drakenstein Stud announced on social media.

The 7-year-old son of War Front entered stallion duty at The National Stud in England for the 2019 breeding season, and he shuttled to Drakenstein Stud for the Southern Hemisphere seasons. His oldest foals are yearlings of 2021.

“It's with a sad and heavy heart that we say goodbye to Lancaster Bomber today,” Drakenstein Stud's social media post read. “He collapsed this morning in his paddock from a suspected heart attack. He was a young stallion with a bright future, and we are very sad that we will not see the best of him.”

Bred in Kentucky by the Sun Shower Syndicate, owner of his dam, the Indian Ridge mare Sun Shower, Lancaster Bomber raced for the Coolmore partnership from the yard of trainer Aidan O'Brien.

The globetrotting horse broke his maiden in Ireland and finished second in the Group 1 Dubai Dewhurst Stakes in England before traveling stateside to Santa Anita Park, where he finished second behind Oscar Performance in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

His 3-year-old campaign saw him test some of the marquee sophomore races in the world during the first half of the season, including the G2 UAE Derby, the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas, and the G1 St. James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot; finishing second in the latter. The second half of the year saw him continue to hop back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean, including a runner-up effort in the G2 Woodbine Mile Stakes and a second to World Approval in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Del Mar, with races in Europe sandwiched in between. He finished the year in Hong Kong, with a fifth in the Hong Kong Mile.

Lancaster Bomber finally got his graded stakes win in his final career start taking the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup in Ireland. He retired with two wins in 18 starts for earnings of $1,422,743.
