Del Mar's eighth fall meeting – starting on Wednesday, Nov. 3 – will offer horsemen/women a solid 20% blended raise in overnight purses compared to last year, as well as a continuation of the exceptionally popular “Ship & Win” program that has amplified field size and year-round horse population at the seaside track near San Diego, Calif., and in the state.

The 15-day stand, which will run through Sunday, Nov. 28, includes the 38th edition of the Breeders' Cup World Championships on Friday, Nov. 5, and Saturday, Nov. 6. The meet is entitled the “Bing Crosby Season” as a salute to the track's founder.

The 20% across-the-board increase in fall overnight purses means that Del Mar is presenting its fall schedule under the same robust levels as its highly successful summer session that ended on Labor Day. And the restarting of its Ship & Win program – with a $3,000 guarantee for a first outing along with a 30% purse boost in all starts – builds on the program's blockbuster summer numbers that were the best in its 11-year history.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“Our summer meet was extraordinary on all fronts,” said track vice president and racing secretary David Jerkens. “Our racing was just about the best we've ever seen here and our Ship & Win program continues to give Del Mar – and California racing – a tremendous boost.”

Among the all-inclusive increases in purse values during the upcoming four-week session will be the following:

Maiden Special Weight races jump from $57,000 to $70,000.

First-level allowance races rise from $59,000 to $72,000.

$16,000 claimers will now race for $30,000 instead of $26,000.

Del Mar's 'Ship & Win' strategy saw 180 new horses make 272 starts during its 31-day summer meeting. That upped the totals since the plan's start in 2011 to more than 1,600 runners appearing at Del Mar and making over 2,200 starts. Those same horses made more than 4,500 starts at other state track's during that time, primarily at Santa Anita, Los Alamitos and Golden Gate Fields.

The Ship and Win program will continue its positive arrangement with Del Mar's sister track, Santa Anita, which began on a full-time basis this past summer. Eligible horses from out-of-state who start once at the upcoming Santa Anita fall session still will be eligible for 30% purse bonus. Besides the track's 180 direct 'S & W' summer runners, there also were 43 Santa Anita starters who then came to Del Mar to compete this past summer and took advantage of the 'S & W' arrangement.

The simple rules for Ship and Win runners are as follows:

Horses must have made their last start outside of California.

Horses cannot have raced in California in the past 12 months.

First-time starters are not eligible

$3,000 starter fee for all eligible horses; 30% purse bonus for all starts at meet

Stakes runners (including overnight stakes) are not eligible for 30% bonus.

Those who have questions concerning the program are encouraged to contact Del Mar's executive vice president for racing Tom Robbins or Jerkens at (858) 792-4230.

“We couldn't be more thrilled with our partners at Del Mar who once again are offering our owners the biggest purses to run for,” said Thoroughbred Owners of California chairman Gary Fenton. “This coupled with its signature 'Ship & Win' program – which has greatly influenced the Southern California horse population – make us excited to head back south again in November.”

Record wagering and highly competitive, quality racing highlighted Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's eight-week summer race meet which concluded its 31-day stand on Labor Day, Sept. 6, in Del Mar, Calif.

The 82nd summer season at the seaside oval welcomed back racing fans who participated enthusiastically to help set a Del Mar record for daily average wagering of $18.38 million, the highest in the track's long history. Top-of-the-line racing flowed daily with a highly competitive jockey colony and a deeply experienced training corps putting on a show each afternoon that was enhanced by some of the sweetest weather Del Mar has experienced in many seasons.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=291 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid= data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“Terrific, simply terrific,” said Del Mar CEO Joe Harper. “We had our fans come back this year and we put on a show of shows for them. The racing was first-rate, the wagering was over the moon and Del Mar was Del Mar again in all its glory. Special, very special.”

The handle numbers raced past an impressive 2020 racing season when “stuck at home” horse players went all out and set a record for daily average handle at $17.32 million. The total handle for the 2021 meet was $569.98 million for 31 days of racing. The 2020 total handle – for 27 days of racing – was $467.60 million.

Field size, often a key driver of wagering, improved as well. In 2020, the track had an exceptional 8.36 horses per race, one of the best marks in the country. In 2021 – running four more days this year than last (31 vs. 27) – that number rose to 8.45.

“Our horsemen and horsewomen were excellent in responding to the goals we set out to bolster our Southern California horse population,” said Del Mar executive vice president of racing Tom Robbins. “We substantially increased purses and incentive bonuses and they replied in fine fashion. When you realize that other meets across the country are struggling with horse population, we feel we're fortunate to receive the strong participation form owners and trainers coming. Our core racing product was excellent.”

The track's popular “Ship & Win” program in its 11th season offered its highest engagement bonus at $4,000 in addition to 50% and 40% purse supplements. It attracted 181 horses from across the country – as opposed to 104 in 2020 – with the majority of them owned and trained by Southern Californians.

Racing fans got to see some stellar performances by potential champions across the summer. Old pro United took down the Eddie Read Stakes; Shedaresthedevil sparkled in the Clement L. Hirsch; Princess Grace took the Yellow Ribbon handily; Astronaut, Mo Forza and Going Global bested their competition on the turf course. Tripoli rose to the top in the TVG Pacific Classic. Medina Spirit made his return to racing memorable. Flightline wowed the crowd on closing weekend. Grace Adler and Pinehurst proved to be juvenile stars.

“Another amazing summer in the books”, said Thoroughbred Owners of California, Gary Fenton. “A big thank you to DMTC. After months of planning and hard work they hit a grand slam for us and continue to provide our membership with an incredible racing experience.”

Del Mar will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 3 for the start of its 15-day Bing Crosby Season which this year will feature the 38th running of the Breeders' Cup Championships on Friday, November 5 and Saturday, November 6.

Encouraged by the tremendous success it has helped spark at the current Del Mar summer race meeting, officials at Santa Anita have announced the popular “Ship & Win” program, which began this past May at Santa Anita, will continue to be in effect through the Arcadia, Calif., track's upcoming 2021 autumn meet, which opens on Friday, Oct. 1.

“This program has proven to be a primary driver in our efforts to bring horses to California from all over the nation,” said Chris Merz, Santa Anita director of racing and racing secretary. “We started to see some horses coming here in May and June and Del Mar has done a tremendous job of recruiting, which we are confident is going to be of significant benefit to the entire circuit here. Along with Del Mar, the Thoroughbred Owners of California have been very supportive in the implementation of Ship & Win and it's great to have all of us working together for the benefit of racing in California.”

The Ship & Win program, which provides a $3,000 bonus and a 35 percent increase in purse earnings for any horse that has not run in California for one year, augments significant purse increases which have been instituted in 2021 at both Santa Anita and Del Mar.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Additionally, any new out-of-state horses coming to Santa Anita which meet requirements or which have made their first start in the Del Mar Ship & Win program, remain eligible for the same benefits in their first start at Santa Anita.

“We are greatly encouraged by recent trends here in California,” said Merz. “There's no question that horsemen around the country are realizing that our purses and incentives are making racing here a much more compelling enterprise. Field size is up at Del Mar and that of course drives pari-mutuel handle.

“With everything that's in place now, our sport is poised to grow in very significant ways and that's great news for our horseplayers, owners and horsemen, as we're providing better and better gambling opportunities while attracting quality horses. We're anxious for everyone to return here in September and we're looking forward to a big meet starting Oct. 1.”

For more information on Santa Anita's Ship & Win program, please contact the Santa Anita Racing Office at (626) 574- 6352.

Ten days after stunning the Iowa Derby as the longest-priced horse on the board, Stilleto Boy hammered for $420,000 on Monday at the Fasig-Tipton July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale, with Del Mar as his next destination.

Steve Moger was the winning bidder on the 3-year-old Shackleford gelding, placing just one bid over Fasig-Tipton's online platform to secure the horse. His brother, Ed Moger Jr. will train the horse.

“Del Mar has the 'Ship and Win' program, and I figured I'd give it a shot,” Steve Moger said. “He'll be going up against some nice horses out there, so we'll see what happens.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Del Mar's “Ship and Win” program incentivizes horses that race at the Southern California track for the first time after previously running out of state with a $4,000 starter's bonus for their debut start. Eligible horses can also receive a 50 percent bonus on purse earnings throughout the remainder of the meet for starts on the dirt, and a 40 percent bonus for turf races.

Stilleto Boy came into the sale with a record of two wins in seven starts for earnings of $249,675, only missing the board once to date. He raced as a Kentucky homebred for John and Iveta Kerber, with trainer Doug Anderson joining a racing partnership that also included Michael Coleman and Aaron Kennedy.

The gelding has been based in the middle of the country throughout his career, racing once as a juvenile at Prairie Meadows in a runner-up effort. He was then moved to Oaklawn Park, where he finished third or better in a trio of maiden special weight races before graduating in his final start of the season at the track.

Stilleto Boy then returned to Prairie Meadows for the summer, where he finished fourth in the Prairie Mile Stakes on June 4.

That effort helped him leave the gate in the July 2 Iowa Derby at odds of 16-to-1, the highest price of the six-horse field. He led at every point of call in the 1 1/16-mile race, and drew off under jockey Jose Ortiz to win by 4 1/2 lengths.

Stilleto Boy is out of the winning Marquetry mare Rosie's Ransom, whose nine foals to race are all winners, including stakes winner Rosie My Rosie and Condo Closing.

Paramount Sales consigned Stilleto Boy, as agent.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., will implement a major purse increase for its upcoming summer race meeting opening on Saturday, July 17, including substantial increases in all overnight purses and record incentives for owners and trainers that ship out-of-state horses to race at Del Mar through its popular “Ship and Win” program, track officials have announced.

Average daily overnight purses for the 2021 season will be increased by over 30% as compared to 2019 levels during which the track operated an uninterrupted racing schedule. With the increases announced today, Del Mar expects to average more than $700,000 a day in purses this summer.

The “Ship and Win” program for horses entering from outside California is doubling both its participation fee for owners (from $2,000 to $4,000) and its purse bonus from 20% to 40% for all eligible races. The purse bonus will be upped to 50% for dirt races in the “Ship and Win” program.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“We've got some real momentum in California as we prepare for the 2021 season and, based on the inquiries we're receiving, owners and trainers are taking notice,” said Del Mar's executive vice president for racing, Tom Robbins. “Our partnership with the Thoroughbred Owners of California, TVG and The Stronach Group has us on track for one of the most lucrative seasons in Del Mar history, which will be a boost for California racing and help set the stage for us to host the Breeders' Cup here again in November.”

The 2021 purse enhancements are due in part to a partnership with the Thoroughbred Owners of California, FanDuel Group's TVG horse racing television network and advance-deposit wagering platform and The Stronach Group's 1/ST Racing. The multi-party agreement, announced earlier this year, is expected to inject up to $15 million into California Thoroughbred purses and programs over the next two years.

In addition, Del Mar's total handle for its 2020 racing seasons was well above initial projections – despite fans not being allowed onsite – adding funding to the purse increases for the upcoming live racing season.

Among the increases for overnights, maiden special weight races will jump from $55,000 during the 2020 summer meet to $70,000 this summer, maiden-claiming $20,000 races rise from $19,000 last year to $25,000 and open $40,000 claiming races purses will increase from $37,000 to $47,000.

As an example of how these increases affect the “Ship and Win” program, a maiden special weight race on the main track this summer will carry a purse of $105,000 ($70,000 plus a 50% bonus) plus a $4,000 starter bonus for out of state horses that qualify for the program.

“Anticipation for Del Mar's race meetings is always high among horsemen but it will be even more so this year with the increased purse structure announced today,” said Gary Fenton, chairman of the TOC. “We look forward to continuing our work with the state's key racing stakeholders to further strengthen California's year-round racing program.”

Track officials also noted that Del Mar's 2021 stakes schedule will be released in the coming weeks and that purse levels will be raised for several of its summer stakes races.

Del Mar will offer a 31-day summer racing season this year after racing 27 days in 2020. It will open with Saturday and Sunday cards (July 17-18), then switch to a Thursday through Sunday schedule for the balance of the meet. The summer season will close, as usual, on Labor Day, Monday, September 6.

Augustin Stable's homebred filly Varenka showed so much promise as a 2-year-old that she raced in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf as a maiden and won three of five starts last year, topped by a dead-heat victory in the Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes at Saratoga. The daughter of Hall of Famer Ghostzapper is winless in three tries in 2020. From there, Wicked Whisper ran fifth after pressing the pace in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, exiting the race with a minor leg issue. Though the horse and the venue have changed, Terranova is looking to repeat the pattern with Stan the Man Saturday at Pimlico Race Course.
4:51 p.m.—$350,000 Grade 1 First Lady Stakes at Keeneland on TVG

Trainer Chad Brown is well represented in the First Lady Stakes, a “Win and You're In” race for the $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Uni (GB), the champion grass mare of 2019, will try to become the first repeat winner of the First Lady as she headlines a field of six. Uni used the First Lady last year as a springboard to victory over the boys in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita. She finished seventh as the favorite in her most start in the Grade 1 Fourstardave against males at Saratoga and prior to that was third in the Grade 1 Just a Game to stablemate and First Lady rival Newspaperofrecord (IRE). Newspaperofrecord, winner of the 2018 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Downs, finished second in the Grade 2 Distaff Turf Mile on Sept. 5 at Churchill Downs.

5:06 p.m.—$250,000 Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational at Belmont Park on FS2

A thrilling finish to the Saratoga Derby Invitational in August saw the top-five finishers separated by less than a length. The trifecta from that contest – Domestic Spending, Gufo and No Word – will engage again as part of a talented nine-horse field in the Belmont Derby Invitational. Otter Bend Stables' Gufo ran second by a head to Domestic Spending in the 1 3/16-mile Saratoga Derby and will look to turn the tables in a rematch for trainer Christophe Clement. The Declaration of War colt has won four of his six career starts, with his third-place debut effort in November at Aqueduct marking his only other non-winning effort.

5:24 p.m.—$400,000 Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland on TVG

Godolphin homebred Essential Quality, a flashy winner on Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs, headlines a field of nine 2-year-olds for the Breeders' Futurity, a “Win and You're In” race for the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Essential Quality is on the same path for Godolphin that Maxfield was in 2019: win a one-turn race in September at Churchill and go straight into the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity. Trained by Brad Cox, Essential Quality won that debut by 4 lengths going 6 furlongs and since has come back to work twice at Churchill Downs with the most recent being a :59.80 move over 5 furlongs last Saturday.

5:36 p.m.—$1,000,000 Grade 1 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on NBC

Kentucky Derby winner Authentic, the No.1-ranked horse on the NTRA Top 3-Year-Old Poll, will headline a field of 11 sophomores entered for the 145th Preakness Stakes, which will bring down the curtain on a most unusual 2020 Triple Crown. The Bob Baffert-trained colt was installed as the 9-5 morning-line favorite for the 1 3/16-mile classic that traditionally has been in mid-May. In a quest to win a record eighth Preakness, Baffert will also saddle Thousand Words, who is rated at 6-1. Bruce Lunsford's Art Collector is rated second at 5-2 in the Preakness morning line for his quest to win a sixth straight race. The son of 2006 Preakness winner Bernardini had earned his way into the Kentucky Derby field with a victory in the Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland but missed a start in the Run for the Roses due to a minor foot issue.

5:57 p.m.—$750,000 Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland on TVG

Bowies Hero will attempt to become the third horse to win the Shadwell Turf Mile in consecutive years when he faces 10 rivals Saturday in the 35th running of the race. Trained by Phil D'Amato, Bowies Hero will be trying to join Gio Ponti (2010-2011) and Dumaani (1995-1996) as the only repeat winners in the race that is a “Win and You're In” test for the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile. To repeat, Bowies Hero will have to get by a quartet of runners trained by Chad Brown headed by two-time Grade 1 winner Raging Bull (FR).

7:25 p.m.—$200,000 Grade 2 City of Hope Mile Stakes at Santa Anita Park on TVG

Trainer Mark Glatt's venerable 6-year-old gelding Sharp Samurai and Peter Miller's razor sharp 4-year-old colt Mo Forza head a field of seven 3-year-olds and up in the City of Hope Mile at Santa Anita. A winner of the 2018 City of Hope Mile and most recently a solid second on dirt in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar Aug. 22, Sharp Samurai will also be cutting back in distance a quarter mile, while Mo Forza, a 4-year-old colt by Uncle Mo, comes off a stirring 4 ¼ length win on turf in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile Handicap Aug. 23.

Sunday Oct. 4

10:05 a.m.—$5,583,805 Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Paris-Longchamp on FS1 and TVG

Enable's path to a record third Arc became clearer on Thursday as Aidan O'Brien removed Love, her main market rival, from contention, but owner Khalid Abdullah's racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe stressed their mare still has plenty to beat despite the absence of a “huge danger”. Love had been the longtime ante-post favourite for the Arc prior to ground fears emerging from her camp this week and with further rain forecast in Paris before Sunday, conditions appear certain to be testing. The absence of this year's 1,000 Guineas and Oaks winner has left Enable a red-hot 5-4 favorite against her 14 rivals, but Grimthorpe insists plenty of threats remain and is concentrating his attention on final preparations for the John Gosden-trained star.

4:12 p.m.—$150,000 Grade 2 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont Park on FS2

Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables and Bethlehem Stables' Plum Ali brings a perfect 2-for-2 record into Sunday's Miss Grillo, a 1 1/16-mile inner turf test for juvenile fillies. Trained by Christophe Clement, Plum Ali graduated on July 23 with a two-length score in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight on the Saratoga turf under Joel Rosario. The First Samurai chestnut then shipped to Kentucky Downs to capture the one-mile Mint Juvenile Fillies by 2 ¾-lengths on Sept. 7 with Tyler Gaffalione up.

4:47 p.m.—$150,000 Grade 2 Beldame Stakes at Belmont Park on FS2

Graded stakes-winner Point of Honor has displayed consistency all year long, but seeks a first win of 2020 when taking on Grade 1-winner Dunbar Road in Sunday's 80th running of the Beldame for older fillies and mares over the main track. Point of Honor has been a hard-knocking filly in 2020, finishing in the money in all four of her starts this season but is still seeking her first victory of the year. The George Weaver trainee has not won since taking the Grade 2 Black Eyed Susan last May at Pimlico and arrives at the Beldame off three straight placings against Grade 1 company. Peter Brant's Dunbar Road arrives at the Beldame off a three-length victory in the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap on July 11, where she won under a hand ride by jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr.

5:10 p.m.—$200,000 Grade 2 Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland on NBCSN and TVG

Bantry Farms' Barrister Tom, winner of the $500,000 Kentucky Downs Juvenile last month, headlines a field of 12 2-year-olds for the Bourbon Stakes, a “Win and You're In” race for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Barrister Tom is perfect in two grass starts with both triumphs coming at a mile. In his most recent start, Barrister Tom scored a 44-1 upset at Kentucky Downs.

5:20 p.m.—$150,000 Grade 3 Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park on FS2

Crawford Farms Racing's Archidust has notched back-to-back stakes wins and will look for his third consecutive in the Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational for 3-year-olds and up. Since Hall of Fame Steve Asmussen took over the training duties, Archidust is 2-for-2, winning the 5 1/2-furlong Wolf Hill in July at Monmouth Park. He won at the same track and distance on Aug. 23, besting Spikes Shirl by a head in the Get Serious.

5:45 p.m.—$400,000 Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes at Keeneland on NBCSN and TVG

Qatar Racing, Flurry Racing Stables and Big Aut Farms' Shedaresthedevil will take on older horses for the first time when she heads a field of six fillies and mares in the Spinster, a “Win and You're In” race for the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff. Trained by Brad Cox, Shedaresthedevil brings a three-race win streak into the Juddmonte Spinster highlighted by her 15-1 upset in the Kentucky Oaks. Prior to that race, she won the Grade 3 Indiana Oaks by five lengths to mark her second graded victory of 2020.

Del Mar's seventh fall race meeting – starting on Saturday, Oct. 31 – will provide horsemen with a healthy 10 percent blended increase in their overnight purses and the highest bonuses ever tied to the popular “Ship & Win” program.

Despite the ongoing pandemic situation, the track was able to hold firm on its recently announced stakes schedule that offers 16 events with $2,250,00 in purses. Beyond that, though, overnight purse levels will be increased by approximately 10 percent across the board.

Examples include:

First level allowance purses increase from $53,000 to $59,000.

Maiden Special Weight races jump from $52,000 to $57,000.

$32,000 claimers go up from $33,000 to $36,000.

Maiden-Claiming $50,000 rises from $28,000 to $31,000.

Racing officials noted also that the track's minimum purse has increased from 2019's $17,000 to this fall's $20,000.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>
Additionally, the track's “Ship & Win” program – now in its 10th year – will provide its richest incentive ever with a guaranteed $3,000 “starter fee” for all runners.

Further, those runners will be eligible for a 30% purse bonus added on top of whatever they win (for finishing first through fifth) in that initial outing.

“We worked with our partners at the Thoroughbred Owners of California on this and I think we've got a solid foundation that should encourage our horsemen – as well as those from other racing venues – to want to be part of what we do here in the fall,” said Del Mar's executive vice president for racing Tom Robbins. “Our fall meet has grown year by year and is now as good a run of racing as you're going to find anywhere in the country this year.”

In reference to the “Ship & Win” program, Robbins noted that since its inception in 2011, the incentive plan has drawn more than 1,400 runners to Del Mar and they've made more than 2,000 starts at the track, as well as more than 4,200 starts at other state tracks, such as Santa Anita, Los Alamitos and Golden Gate.

The simple rules for “S & W” runners are as follows:

Horses must have made their last start outside of California.

Horses cannot have raced in California in the past 12 months.

First-time starters are not eligible.

$3,000 starter fee for all eligible horses; 30% purse bonus for initial start.

Stakes runners (including overnight stakes) are not eligible for the 30% bonus.

Those who have questions concerning the program are encouraged to contact Robbins or racing secretary David Jerkens at (858) 792-4230.

The fall session will have a first post daily of 12:30 p.m. with the exception of its special Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 26) card that begins at 11 a.m. Closing day will be Sunday, November 29.
