Some eleven years after her multiple champion dam Beholder (Henny Hughes) was just nosed out of a victory, 'TDN Rising Star' Tamara (Bolt d'Oro) did her momma proud with a thoroughly dominating performance in the GI FanDuel Racing Del Mar Debutante on closing weekend at the seaside oval.

It was an effort that even exceeded the already lofty expectations of her Hall of Fame connections.

“She's been doing things in her training that 2-year-olds aren't supposed to do,” said her jockey Mile Smith. “She's really special. She's like her mother. You don't see that usually. Those great mares they normally don't have great foals. But this one might be. I just held on today. I didn't want to fall off. She was doing it all herself. What can I say. She's very special.”

Added trainer Richard Mandella: “I expected her to run good but that was a little beyond. Watching it, he [Smith] had so much horse he didn't want to restrict her. He just had her do what she wanted to do. She's very quick, so I thought he would put her right there [lay second and up close] and we both agreed to that, just see what everybody else does.”

Named in honor of the late B. Wayne Hughes's daughter, Tamara was the 31-10 second choice when debuting against the once-raced and well-regarded Hope Road (Quality Road–Marley's Freedom) Aug. 19, but overcame a stumbling start to graduate by a professional 2 1/4 lengths. The Debutante was the next logical spot, but only three weeks away, meaning there could be no hiccups if she was going to make the race. Tamara was back on the worktab Aug. 30, going three-eighths of a mile in a smart :36 2/5 (2/6) and she blew out three furlongs in :34 4/5 (1/18) Sept. 4, four ticks faster than stablemate and fellow 'Rising Star' Boltage (Bolt d'Oro), who goes in Sunday's GIII Del Mar Juvenile Turf.

The 13-10 favorite was bumped soundly to her outside by 143-1 Motet (Mo Town), but immediately recovered from that to sit just off the early pace set by Cal-bred Pushiness (Kantharos). Knowing precisely what he had underneath him, Smith allowed Tamara to stride into the lead fully three furlongs from home, and the race was over from there for all intents and purposes. Well clear entering the stretch, Tamara lengthened her stride beautifully while scarcely asked for an effort and glided under the wire a comprehensive winner. Laurent (Practical Joke) stayed on into second ahead of Gate to Paradise (Arrogate) in third, neither in the same league as Tamara.

Pedigree Notes:

Tamara is the fourth foal out of Beholder and she is the year-younger half-sister to Teena Ella (War Front), who won the GIII Senorita S. in May. Beholder's yearling colt by Curlin topped last month's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale when selling for $4 million to Amr Zedan.

Tamara's deeper female family needs little introduction. Beholder, a $180,000 purchase by Spendthrift at Keeneland September in 2011, was bred by Clarkland Farm, who purchased dam Leslie's Lady for $100,000 in foal to Orientate at the 2006 Keeneland November Sale. Just over a year later, Into Mischief made that decision look good when taking out the GI CashCall Futurity for Hughes and Richard Mandella. Into Mischief has since gone on to become one of the most successful sires in the world, with 134 black-type winners to date.

By the time Leslie's Lady's Scat Daddy colt sold to Coolmore for a sales-topping price of $3 million at Keeneland September in 2016, Beholder had won 10 Grade Is and three Eclipse Awards before adding to both totals when going out a winner in a memorable renewal of the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff. Mendelssohn became a Breeders' Cup champion in his own right in the 2018 GI Juvenile Turf–at Del Mar–and is also off to a promising start at stud. Leslie's Lady is also the dam of Clarkland's 'TDN Rising Star' Marr Time (Not This Time).

Barren to Gun Runner for 2023, Beholder was bred back to Spendthrift's Jackie's Warrior this year.

Peter Redekop's And Tell Me Nolies paid tribute to her late champion sire Arrogate Saturday, nailing heavy favorite and 'TDN Rising Star' Home Cooking (Honor Code) on the line to take the GI Del Mar Debutante S.

Given a 9-1 chance with Home Cooking pounded down to 3-5, And Tell Me No Lies shuffled a bit at the start as her neighbors on each side broke in her direction, but she did not falter and moved up to establish position as the chalk took control, clocking a :22.01 first quarter. One off the fence in fifth, she kept the favorite within her sights as the half went in a swift :44.36. And Tell Me Nolies ranged up two wide on the far turn as Home Cooking entered the stretch on a clear lead. The Bob Baffert runner grew a bit leg weary in the final strides and And Tell Me Nolies found just enough to push past her late for a narrow upset in a tight photo finish. Ice Dancing (Frosted) completed the trifecta.

“I told Peter [Miller] that I had confidence in this filly right from the start,” said winning rider Ramon Vasquez. “I'm glad he was loyal to me and let me ride her in this one. She was a runner all the way today. And I knew I was the winner at the wire. This is my first Grade I win. It is so amazing. I want to thank Peter for giving me this chance. This is amazing.”

“I didn't see a ton of speed on the form,” Miller said. “We were drawn inside. I think he [Vasquez] wanted to get position, which he did. I did like some of the moves he made. At the five-eighths pole when he beat Cedillo ([Vegas Magic] to the spot, and then when he got her outside around the two-and-a-half furlong pole, I felt really good.”

A $70,000 KEESEP acquisition by D.J. Stable, And Tell Me Nolies brought $230,000 from agent Bryan Anderson at OBS April after breezing in :10 flat. Rallying for fourth behind Satin Doll (Congrats)–who was scratched from this event–when unveiled in a five-panel event at this oval July 23, she broke through next out with a narrow graduation going 6 1/2 furlongs over this strip Aug. 14. Ice Dancing finished third that day.

Pedigree Notes:

And Tell Me Nolies is the second Grade I/graded winner for her late sire Arrogate. She hails from his second of three crops and his other graded scorer comes from his first in this year's GI Kentucky Oaks victress Secret Oath. They are two of the Eclipse winners four black-type scorers. Breeder Lara Run acquired GSW & GISP Be Fair for $50,000 at the 2018 KEENOV sale in foal to Practical Joke and sold her to Jim Ballinger in foal to super sire Gun Runner for $35,000 at the OBSWIN sale. The resulting foal is a now-yearling colt, who brought $150,000 from McMahon & Hill Bloodstock at Keeneland November last term. The half-sister to GISW Macho Again (Macho Uno) failed to get in foal to The Big Beast for 2022, but was bred to Mo Town this spring.

In this continuing series, we examine the past winners of significant filly/mare races by the lasting influence they've had on the breed. Up today is the GI TVG Del Mar Debutante S., a race with a surprising amount of repercussion on the sport.

First run the year before Queen Elizabeth II took the throne, the Del Mar Debutante has seen 72 winners, with D. Wayne Lukas and Bob Baffert together combining for more than a quarter of those visits to the winner's circle. It's been run on Polytrack; it's been run in two divisions; and it's been run at seven-eighths since 1994 after stints at six and eight furlongs. The 2-year-old filly event was officially designated a Grade I in 1999.

With the storied history and sheer volume of big-league filly/mare contests focused at Saratoga over the summer, other tracks–even those as spectacular as Del Mar–can be overshadowed. But every now and then a race, like the Del Mar Debutante, has a list of past winners that pops up on the radar. While not all of the Debutante's victresses have been stellar broodmares, there have been a few that have more than held their own. The list may not be long, but it's top notch.

Following are the some of the most important Del Mar Debutante winners by what impact they have had on the breed through their sons and daughters.

Althea (1981, Alydar–Courtly Dee, by Never Bend): A champion 2-year-old who died at just 14 in a paddock accident, this mare–bred by the partnership of Helen Groves, Helen Alexander, and David Aykroyd–produced four stakes winners from her five foals, including Japanese champion Yamanin Paradise and GSW Destiny Dance. Her daughters and granddaughters have been responsible for GISW and influential sire Arch, U.S. champion Covfefe, UAE champion Festival of Light, and GISWs Acoma and Balletto (UAE). From an extended family that just keeps giving, it's all but a certainty that even more will bubble to the surface as time goes by from Althea's branch of her Broodmare of the Year dam.

Terlingua (1976, Secretariat–Crimson Saint, by Crimson Satan): There a substantial list of stakes performers who trace to this Tom Gentry-bred chestnut, including MGISW Ticker Tape (GB), English G1SW Crowded House (GB), and French G1SW Brando (GB), but it's her GISW son, Storm Cat, who launched a legacy. Christened the leading sire, broodmare sire, and juvenile sire in the U.S.–all multiple times–he simply redefined the breed. After standing for multiple years at $500,000 as the premier sire in the land, Storm Cat has left reverberations still felt today even though he was pensioned 14 years ago and died a few years later.

Brown Berry (1960, Mount Marcy–Brown Baby, by Phalanx): This C. V. Whitney-bred mare is a bit of an outlier, as it would be a challenge to find her in any top pedigrees of today. However, as one of history's rare broodmares to produce more than one Classic winner–and on each side of the Atlantic, to boot–she surely deserves a mention. Her son Avatar won the 1975 GI Belmont S. (and two other Grade Is) and another son, Hours After, won the 1988 G1 Prix du Jockey Club. She also produced two other major stakes winners, as well as five more stakes performers.

Tonga (1949, Polynesian–Tirl, by Tick On): Winner of the very first Del Mar Debutante, Tonga didn't have a single stakes winner among her five foals. However, one of her daughters produced three black-type winners and daughters who would beget, among others, GI Kentucky Oaks winner Gal in a Ruckus, MGISW Habibti, and Canadian Broodmare of the Year No Class, who would be the foundation mare of Sam-Son Farm. The long list of Canadian champions produced by No Class and her daughters include Classy 'n Smart, Sky Classic, and Regal Classic, while her granddaughter Dance Smartly was also a U.S. champion and her grandson Smart Strike was a two-time leading sire in the U.S. whose son, two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, is among the top sires in the U.S. Not a year goes by without the far-reaching effect on both sides of the border of No Class.

A runaway winner of her lone Grade 1 assignment to date, Bob Baffert's Grace Adler heads a field of seven two-year fillies going a mile and one sixteenth in the Grade 2, $200,000 Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita this Friday. A Breeders' Cup “Win & You're In” Challenge Race qualifier, the Chandelier winner will earn a fees-paid berth to the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Nov. 5 at Del Mar.

A heavily favored first-out maiden winner going five furlongs July 31, Grace Adler, a $700,000 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase purchase, came back to blitz seven rivals going seven furlongs at odds of 4-1 in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante Sept. 5, thus cementing her role as the Chandelier favorite.

Owned by Willow Grace Farm and Michael Lund Petersen, Grace Adler has rallied from off the pace in both of her wins and seems well suited to the stretch-out in distance with regular rider Flavien Prat back aboard. Out of the Newfoundland mare Our Khrysty, she's banked $222,000.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=197 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=198 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Second to Grace Adler in the Del Mar Debutante, trainer Mark Glatt's Dance to the Music was a runaway 4 ¾ length first-out maiden winner going 5 ½ furlongs and will retain the services of Abel Cedillo. Owned by Red Baron's Barn, LLC and Rancho Temescal, Dance to the Music, a Kentucky-bred filly by Maclean's Music, was purchased for $575,000 out of the 2021 Ocala Breeders' Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training this past April.

Baffert will also be represented by Censorship, who is owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman. Although winless in three starts, she stumbled badly leaving the gate as the even money favorite in her most recent assignment, a one mile maiden race on Aug. 26, finishing second, beaten 4 ¼ lengths by Desert Dawn, who she'll again face on Friday.

Trainer Phil D'Amato will be sending out a three talented fillies in the Chandelier, headed by Elm Drive, who was a game head winner of the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes two starts back on Aug. 6 and who comes off a disappointing seventh following a rough start in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante. Owned by Little Red Feather Racing, Elm Drive won her first start going five furlongs by eight lengths and earned a lofty 85 Beyer Speed Figure in winning the Sorrento. She'll try two turns for the first time and be ridden for the fourth consecutive time by Juan Hernandez.

D'Amato's Desert Dawn rallied nicely under Ricky Gonzalez to break her maiden in what was her second start at odds of 6-1. With the one mile win to her credit, this Arizona-bred filly by Cupid is owned by her breeders, the H & E Ranch.

D'Amato will also saddle first-out winner Ain't Easy, who pressed the early pace and opened up through the lane to win going 5 ½ furlongs by 5 ¼ lengths on Aug. 21 at Del Mar. A $400,000 Keeneland September Yearling, Ain't Easy, who was dismissed at 8-1 in her debut, is owned by Old Bones Racing Stable, LLC, Michael Lombardi and Joey Platts.

Willow Grace Farm or Michael Lund Petersen's Grace Adler came running late in the Grade 1 TVG Del Mar Debutante, then she went running right on by as she drew out to a galloping 11 1/4 length triumph in the 71st edition of Del Mar's foremost race for 2-year-old fillies at the seaside track north of San Diego, Calif.

The daughter of Curlin stalked a rapid early pace, then made her move on the turn in the seven-furlong affair and showed her heels to her seven rivals. She was handled by meet-leading rider Flavien Prat, one of four winners he had on the afternoon.

Grace Adler, conditioned by Bob Baffert, earned $180,000 from the gross purse of $301,500, increasing her winnings to $222,000. She captured her only other start, a straight maiden race at Del Mar on July 31. Baffert, far and away Del Mar's leading trainer with 142 stakes wins, was taking down his 10th TVG Del Mar Debutante.

Finishing second was Red Baron's Barn or Rancho Temescal's Dance to the Music, 2 3/4 lengths ahead of Calvin Nguyen's Bicameral.

Grace Adler returned $11.20, $4.80 and $4.20 for her score. Dance to the Music paid $5.00 and $4.20, while Bicameral returned $10.00 for the show.

Splits in the race were :21.78, :44.37, 1:10.75 with a final time of 1:23.76.

Earlier on the day's program, Gary Barber's Liam's Dove pulled off a shocker by leading from start to finish and hanging on for a head victory in the $103,000 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf under Kyle Frey.

The daughter of Liam's Map ran the one mile on the green in 1:36.65 and bested 10 other 2-year-old fillies in the 10th running of the race. She is trained by Peter Miller.

Finishing second was Benowitz Family Trust, CYBT or Nentwig, et al's Helens Well, the 3-1 race favorite, and third was Hronis Racing's Dolly May.

Liam's Dove, a maiden making the third start of her career, returned $71.80, $27.20 and $12.60 for her score. Helens Well paid $5.00 and $3.60, while Dolly May returned $5.60 to show.

The victory was Miller's 24 of the stand on its 30th day of racing. He's the track's leading trainer and will be crowned its 2021 champion on Monday, his eighth overall at the shore oval.

Racing will conclude at Del Mar tomorrow, Labor Day Monday. There will be a $694,803 carryover in its Pick 6 Single Ticket Jackpot wager and a “mandatory” payout for the day. First post will be 1:30 p.m.

Post-race quotes:

FLAVIEN PRAT (Grace Adler, winner) – “No special instructions for me. Bob (trainer Baffert) just told me that she wasn't as fast as the other fillies, but that she'd come running. He was certainly right. It might have looked like I moved too early with her, but it was more a case of them coming back to me. We were going forward and they were coming back.”

BOB BAFFERT (Grace Adler, winner) “I wasn't happy with (Eda's) position early because they were going way too fast up front. Grace Adler is a really good filly and when she started to make her move (from sixth) you could tell by Trevor Denman's voice that she was really making up the ground. They're both good fillies, it's just too bad that (Eda) got caught up in a speed duel. It was set up for (Grace Adler).”

FRACTIONS: :21.78 :44.37 1:10.75 1:23.76

The stakes win was the 12th of the meet for rider Prat and his third in the TVG Del Mar Debutante. He now has 72 stakes wins at Del Mar, tied for 10th most all time.

The stakes win was the third of the meet for trainer Baffert and his 10th in the TVG Del Mar Debutante. He now has 142 stakes wins at Del Mar, the most of any trainer.

The winning owners are Willow Grace Farm and Michael Lund Petersen of Reisterstown, Md.

Little Red Feather Racing's Elm Drive (Mohaymen) and Baoma Corporation's Eda (Munnings), who were separated by just a head after battling the length of the stretch in the GIII Sorrento S. Aug. 6, renew their rivalry in the GI TVG Del Mar Debutante Sunday. Elm Drive, trained by Phil D'Amato, romped by eight lengths in her five-furlong debut at Los Alamitos June 26 and refused to let Eda by when winning the six-furlong Sorrento.

Eda has yet to finish in front in her two-race career. The Bob Baffert trainee inherited the victory via disqualification after finishing a nose runner-up in her June 19 debut and couldn't get by a determined Elm Drive in the Sorrento.

Michael Lund Petersen, who enjoyed Grade I success at Saratoga last weekend when his champion Gamine (Into Mischief) won the GI Ballerina S., will look to double up on the West Coast when Grace Adler (Curlin) goes postward Sunday at Del Mar. Co-owned with Willow Grace Farm and trained by Baffert, the $700,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga purchase battled to a 3/4-length debut score going five furlongs at Del Mar July 31. She enters the seven-furlong Debutante off six-furlong drills Aug. 23 and Aug. 30.

Baffert has won the last two runnings of the Debutante, with Bast in 2019 and Princess Noor in 2020, and has won the race nine times since 1995.

Trainer Phil D'Amato reported Saturday morning that 2-year-old filly Elm Drive came out of her victory in Friday's $200,000 Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes “really good” physically.

And if the Kentucky-bred daughter of Mohaymen, a $165,000 purchase at the Ocala sale in March who carries the colors of Little Red Feather Racing stays that way, she'll next be seen in the $300,000 Grade 1 TVG Del Mar Debutante on September 5.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“Yup, absolutely,” was D'Amato's response when the Debutante was mentioned in the winner's circle after she prevailed by a head over Baoma Corp's Eda in a stretch-long duel while covering six furlongs in 1:10.64.

“She broke on top then Juan (Hernandez) got her to rate, make a move and fight off a rival to her outside the length of the stretch. I just thought that's the epitome of class. Very professional, and I think she's the type of filly that the longer (the races) the better.”

Having chalked up one stakes victory for the weekend, D'Amato will send out Raymundos Secret (6-1) and Charmaine's Mia (4-1) in Saturday's $200,000 Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon and narrowly favored (2-1) Cathkin Peak in Sunday's $150,000 Grade 3 La Jolla Stakes as a possible closer to three consecutive big days.

Irish-bred Cathkin Peak made his U.S. debut at Del Mar in late November a winning one and followed that with a December victory in the $80,000 Eddie Logan Stakes at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. Kicking off his 3-year-old campaign this year, Cathkin Peak was second to soon-to-be Santa Anita Derby winner Rock Your World in the $100,000 Pasadena Stakes in February and has gone unraced since.

“He had a couple of little things we needed to deal with, but he never left the barn and he has come back to train really well,” D'Amato said. Cathkin Peak will go 1 1/16 miles, the longest assignment of his career, in the La Jolla – second leg in the grass stakes series for 3-year-olds during the Del Mar summer. His previous starts were all at a mile.

“He's really tactical,” D'Amato said. “If there's not a lot of pace, he can be up close; if there is, he can sit back and make a late move. Juan can play the break and try to have him in the right spot.”

The field for the La Jolla from the rail with jockeys and morning line odds in parenthesis: Stilleto Boy (Kent Desormeaux, 6-1); Wyfire (Kyle Frey, 12-1); Hudson Ridge (Abel Cedillo, 5-2); Cathkin Peak (Juan Hernandez, 2-1); Zoffarelli (Drayden Van Dyke, 3-1), and Sword Zorro (Umberto Rispoli, 4-1).

Eleven promising juvenile fillies will face the starter Friday at Del Mar and run six furlongs in the 53rd edition of the Sorrento Stakes. The Grade 2, $200,000 headliner will be the featured attraction on an eight-race card that has a traditional Four O'Clock Friday start at the seaside track north of San Diego, Calif.

Nine of the 11 2-year-olds have already won a race and one of them – King, Kirby or Kirby's Smash Ticket – did so in impressive fashion at Del Mar on July 17 in a straight maiden affair, drawing out to tally by five lengths in good time under Umberto Rispoli for New Mexico-based conditioner Todd Fincher. That dash, along with a second-place finish she turned in earlier in June at Lone Star Park in Texas, was enough for morning line maker Jon White to hang her the 9-5 favorite in the Sorrento.

Others in the field who have drawn White's eye are Little Red Feather Racing's Elm Drive, who trains out of the barn of Phil D'Amato and won her initial start at Los Alamitos on June 26 by eight lengths under Juan Hernandez. The rider returns Friday and they've drawn the role of second-favorite at 5-2. Listed at 4-1 is Baoma Corp's Eda, who missed by a whisker at Santa Anita on June 19, but was made the winner for a bumping incident with the filly Ko Olina. Bob Baffert trains Eda and once again will have Abel Cedillo in the boot.
