Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Friday's Observations features Tattersalls Craven Breeze up co-topper Vandeek (Havana Grey).

14:15 Nottingham, Mdn, £6,850, 2yo, 6f 18yT
VANDEEK (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) emerges a touch later than would have been expected from a colt who at 625,000gns was the joint sale topper at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up. Simon and Ed Crisford introduce KHK Racing Ltd's grey from the family of the sires Anabaa and Key Of Luck against last month's Newmarket runner-up Never So Brave (Ire) (No Nay Never), a Saeed Suhail-Sir Michael Stoute project who was close enough to TDN Rising Star Ancient Wisdom (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) to suggest he has ability.

14.25 Newbury, Novice, £12,000, 2yo, 7fT
TRAFALGAR SQUARE (IRE) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), a 600,000gns Book 1 graduate, is introduced by Andrew Balding for Qatar Racing in the maiden the stable won 12 months ago with Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and which saw Bayside Boy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) prevail the year previously. A son of the G2 May Hill S. scorer and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up Turret Rocks (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and half-brother to last month's G3 Jersey S. winner Age Of Kings (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), he has it to do to match up to the Westerberg colour-bearer Maximum Dividend (Ire) (American Pharoah), a Richard Hannon-trained son of the G3 Give Thanks S. winner Sizzling (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who was such a promising nose second to Juddmonte's Starlore (GB) (Kingman {GB}) at Sandown a fortnight ago.

HOW THEY FARED
18.20 Leopardstown, Mdn, €16,000, 2yo, f, 8fT
Andromeda (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the full-sister to the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Peaceful (Ire), put up a debut full of promise in second.

Poised just off the lead after enduring contact at the break, the well-related gelding sat a wide trip, chasing three wide up the backstretch as Central Pride (Lord Nelson) paced the field through a :47.43 opening half. Given his cue around the far turn, Spirit of St Louis swarmed up with a five-wide move past the quarter pole to sprint by the leading pair and go clear with a furlong to run.

Some of the most highly anticipated races during the summer racing season are the 'baby' races during the boutique meetings at both Saratoga and Del Mar and even at Ellis Park, which attracts its fair share of high-priced offspring from a variety of top national outfits. Summer Breezes highlights debuting 2-year-olds at those meetings that have been sourced at the breeze-up sales earlier in the year, with links to their under-track previews. Already this year at Saratoga, City Man (Mucho Macho Man), Mo Strike (Uncle Mo) and Empress Tigress (Classic Empire)–each a graduate of the 2-year-old sales–have already struck at stakes level, while the likes of juvenile purchases and 'TDN Rising Stars' Taiba (Gun Runner), We The People (Constitution) and Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) have also left their mark on graded/group competition this season. Kaleem Shah's THALES (Quality Road) gets his start for Simon Callaghan Friday. The half to SW and MGISP Standard Deviation (Curlin), who sold for $240,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October sale, realized a $1.25 million final bid following a :20.3 quarter at the OBS Spring sale last season. The ridgling was the highest-priced colt and the second highest priced offspring by the Lane's End stallion last term. Pegram, Watson & Weitman's Essential Wager (Honor Code) also represents a sale's coup for his sire. One of three Bob Baffert trainees in this seven-furlong test, the son of GSP Mr Hall's Opus (Officer) brought $300,000 at the OBS Spring, the second highest-priced offspring by his sire in 2020. Baffert is also represented by $360,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling buy Miacomet (Flatter) and Vetoed (Bayern). TJCIS PPs

Magnier, Tabor, Smith et al's BALLET DANCING (Medaglia d'Oro) makes her career bow in this test for conditioner Simon Callaghan. The $800,000 KEEESEP purchase is out of GSP Fully Living (Unbridled's Song), who is out of a half-sister to Champion juvenile filly Halfbridled (Unbridled). Don Alberto's Magical Sign (Gun Runner) kicks off for trainer Mike McCarthy. A half to MGSP Moraz (Empire Maker), the filly is a granddaughter of Macoumba (Mr. Prospector), the dam of the late leading sire Malibu Moon. TJCIS PPs
