The Goffs Yorton Sale will not take place in 2024, and will instead return on Sept. 4, 2025, Goffs and Yorton's David Futter confirmed on Wednesday.

The decision was made by Futter, who felt that although the quality of horses at Yorton was up to its usual high standard, the quantity did not justify the sale taking place this year. Yorton's aim is to assemble roughly 50 quality lots in time for the 2025 edition.

Futter said, “It has not been an easy decision to suspend the sale for 2024 but we feel it is in the best interests of the event given we don't have the numbers of horses required to ask potential buyers to make their way to Wales. We are grateful to Goffs for bringing their professionalism and sharing in our enthusiasm for this venture and together we have worked hard to establish a sale with a reputation for quality and performance. We still strongly believe in starting horses earlier and in producing 2-year-olds and will keep offering Yorton graduates, just in a different location in 2024. We will maintain our focus on sourcing a quality line-up of horses and look forward to working with Goffs and welcoming everyone back to Yorton in 2025.”

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent added, “With its first Grade 1 winner coming in 2023 courtesy of Inthepocket (GB) (Blue Bresil {Fr}), many outstanding pinhooking results for store and point-to-point buyers, and a new record top price set last year with a No Risk At All (Fr) 2-year-old selling for £165,000, the sale is performing in all sectors and it's a credit to David and the Yorton team. We too look forward to seeing the sale return to the calendar in 2025 and working with Yorton to produce another successful sale.”

Multiple Group 1 winner Postponed (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will move to Yorton Stud for the 2024 breeding season after Yorton and James & Jean Potter, Ltd. purchased the stallion from Darley. A fee will be announced later for the four-time Group 1 winner.

Previously under the Darley banner at Dalham Hall Stud, the bay will stand to the Futter family's stud near Welshpool in Powys. Richard Venn brokered the deal.

David Futter said of the son of Ever Rigg (GB) (Dubai Destination), “Postponed is a proper horse that any stallion master would welcome to their line-up of National Hunt sires. He is a wonderful addition to the Yorton roster.

“Postponed's oldest stock are only four, yet his young hurdlers are producing some wonderful results. From 12 individual runners five have won, four have been placed and two gained places in black-type races.

“He represents everything we look for in a sire. He raced enthusiastically from the age of two to six, he won four Group 1 races including the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. and the Coronation Cup, he retired sound, he has size and scope and the most wonderful mind.”

Postponed, who has G3 Nell Gwyn S. second Almohandesah (GB) to his credit, will stand alongside Arrigo (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger}), Gentlewave (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}), Ito (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), and Pether's Moon (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}).

The fifth edition of the Goffs UK Yorton Sale featured a new record top price, with 2-year-old Brisky Dancer (Fr) selling to Ian Ferguson and Dai Walters for £165,000 on Thursday. The sale celebrated it's first Grade 1 alumi this year with Inthepocket (GB) (Blue Bresil {Fr}), who scored at Aintree's Grand National Festival.

Consigned as lot 5, the gelded son of No Risk At All (Fr) is a half-brother to Grade 3 winners Al Dancer (Fr) (Al Namix {Fr}) and Tzar's Dancer (Fr) (Tzar Rodney {Fr}). The previous record price was also set by a No Risk At All 2-year-old at £105,000, also purchased by Walters, in the sale's inaugural edition five years ago.

No Risk At All also sired the second highest price on the day, a 2-year-old filly (lot 18), who is a half-sister to listed winner Night Endeavour (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}), with the pair being out of the listed winner Night Serenade (Ire) (Golan {Ire}).

A total of 36 horses sold, the same number as last year, for a clearance rate of 80% and a gross of £1,136,000. The average dropped a tick to £31,556, and the median decreased 7% to £28,000.

Yorton owner David Futter said, “This year marks the fifth year of this sale and it's great to see so many returning clients, along with a number of new faces. We take great pleasure in hosting this sale and we can't do it without the support of those who have attended and taken part in the auction–so to them we say a sincere thank you. We would also like to thank the Goffs team who have partnered with us since the launch of this sale in 2019.”

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent added, “We are delighted to break another record here at Yorton Farm and we are very proud to partner with David Futter and his team for this wonderfully unique event, where there were some lovely horses on offer today. We look forward to seeing them appear on the racecourse or in the sales ring for new connections and we hope to see another Grade 1 winner from this sale in the coming season.”

The strongest catalogue in the three-year history of the Goffs UK Yorton Sale resulted in a record set of figures for the Welsh sale of jumping stock. From 43 offerings, 41 were sold for £1,138,000, at an average of £27,756 and a median of £26,000.

Topping trade was a 2-year-old gelded son of Isfahan (Ger) (lot 15) who was picked up by Lew House Stables for £80,000. Also proving popular within the ring attended by buyers from the UK, France and Ireland was lot 33, a gelded 2-year-old son of Pether's Moon (Ire) scooped up by NBB Racing for £75,000.

Other buyers included Sue Bramall, who purchased four lots; Chauvigny Global Equine, Dan Astbury and Bradley Gibbs, Gerry Hogan, Highflyer Bloodstock, Lucinda Russell, Marcus Foley, Rathbarry Stud, Rathmore Stud and Tom Malone.

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent said, “What an incredible day at Yorton. This sale is only in its third year and has already achieved some fantastic results on the racecourse and in the sales ring, both of which have given David Futter and his team the increased confidence to improve the quality of horses catalogued for sale at the unique event. And these improvements have been richly rewarded with a sale that generated more than £1,000,000 in turnover, whilst recording record prices for both average and median. It was great to see so many new faces at Yorton, including the Lew House Stables team, who bid through Marcus Foley and bought four horses including the £80,000 top price, and we wish all buyers the very best of luck with their new purchases.

“We would also like to thank and congratulate James and Jean Potter plus David Futter and his team on their deserved success with this sale. The Futter family are a fantastically enthusiastic team who have worked tirelessly to develop this unique concept and we will all enjoy the celebrations before they start sourcing an even better bunch of horses for 2022–we're looking forward to it already.”

Arrigo, a Shirocco (Ger) half-brother to Germany’s champion sire Adlerflug (Ger), has joined the roster of National Hunt stallions at Yorton Farm Stud in Wales.

Winner of the G2 Oppenheim-Union-Rennen and runner-up to Campanologist in the G1 Gran Premio Jockey Club Italiano, Arrigo, who is now 13, was bred by Gestut Schlenderhan. He has spent the last two seasons in France at Haras du Mazet and initially stood at Gestut Graditz in Germany after being retired from racing at the age of seven. His eldest runners have just turned four.

“It has taken us two years to secure Arrigo, but thankfully we have him now,” said David Futter of Yorton Farm Stud. “It is common for sons of successful Flat stallions to retire to stud, but it is difficult to acquire sons of quality jump sires.

“Stallions bred in Germany have always been very lucky for Yorton and our supporters, and this one comes from one of that country’s best female families. Standing 16.2hh, Arrigo is a wonderful-looking horse, he raced at the highest level and had the soundness and temperament to remain in training as a seven-year-old.”

He added, “He has been bought in partnership with the Potter family and will have the backing of our broodmare bands. Yorton’s policy is to support the stallions we stand, and it is our intention to buy his stock at the sales and also put them into training.”
