“In 2022, Alberta horse racing moved forward from the pandemic and began the recovery process with reasons for optimism on many fronts,” said Master of Ceremonies Ken Gee on behalf of Horse Racing Alberta Chief Executive Officer Kent Verlik. “An exciting accomplishment was the long-term funding agreement signed by Horse Racing Alberta and the Alberta Government that provides stability to the industry until Mar. 31, 2031.”

The biggest winner of the night was Dance Shoes (Mank), who won all four of the categories she was nominated for: Horse of the Year, Champion Sprinter, Champion Older Mare, and Champion Alberta-bred.

The Ken Cohoe Lifetime Achievement Award went to horseman Rod Cone. Leading Breeder was Pierre Esquirol; Leading Owner was the partnership of Crystal Cates and Gonzalo Anderson; Tim Rycroft was named Leading Trainer; and Enrique Gonzalez was awarded Leading Jockey.

This program is open to Alberta residents who have purchased in the sales ring at a recognized public auction outside of the province of Alberta, a Thoroughbred mare in foal to a Thoroughbred stallion that will foal in 2022. The application can be obtained from the CTHS Alberta website: cthsalta.com. All applications to be sent to CTHS at jkruse@cthsalta.com.

The purchase price of the mare must be $5,000 or more. For the purposes of this program, purchases in U.S. funds will be considered at par, i.e., $1 USD = $1 CND. A reimbursement of 40 percent of the hammer price paid (not including any sales taxes), to a maximum of $5,000(CDN) is available to a qualified purchaser who meets the following conditions:

•Applicants must be an individual, corporation or a partnership;

•If an individual, the applicant must have been resident in Alberta for at least one year prior to the date of the purchase of the mare;

•If a partnership, all partners must be individuals that have been resident in Alberta for at least one year prior to the date of the purchase of the mare;

•Mares must be purchased in a sales ring at a recognized public auction held outside of Alberta. Mares who do not reach their reserve price or for which no bid is received, do not qualify;

•All mares purchased must have ownership transferred directly from the sales company to applicant and/or applicants (no third-party transfers of ownership in part or whole with the exception of using an agent). If an agent is used to purchase the mare, proof of formal appointment of the agent must be provided.

•The mare cannot be over 12 years old at the time of the purchase;

•The mare must foal in Alberta in 2022 and be bred to a Thoroughbred stallion standing in Alberta during the 2022 breeding season;

• Applicants must be the registered breeders of the foal produced by the purchased mare. No added or deleted breeders;

• If a mare aborts or otherwise loses her foal, the applicant will still qualify if the mare was confirmed in foal at the time of the purchase and is bred to a Thoroughbred stallion standing in Alberta during the 2022 breeding season. (A veterinary certificate will be required confirming that the mare was in foal at the time of the purchase);

• If the mare did not conceive when bred to a Thoroughbred stallion standing in Alberta during the 2022 breeding season, proof will be required that the mare was bred during at least two (2) estrous cycles. An attestation that this requirement has been met will be required from the stallion owner or stallion manager.

• The application deadline for the 2021-2022 mare purchase rebate will be July 1, 2022 with the approved rebate being paid to successful applicants by July 31, 2022. Since this program is limited to $100,000, there is a limit of two applications per individual, corporation or a partnership. In the event that the program is oversubscribed, one application per individual, corporation or partnership will be given priority before the second application will be considered.

• The Applicant accepts all other terms and conditions relating to the program, which may be amended from time to time, including the right to public disclosure.

The CTHS Alberta sale topper was an Alberta-bred gelding by Value Plus out of Holiday Maker (Harlan's Holiday), bought for C$32,000 by Don Knight and Don Danard from the consignment of C.W. Matier.

The auction took place at Westerner Park in Red Deer, Alberta, offering horses of all ages.

Focusing on the yearling section, which made up the bulk of the catalog, a total of 39 horses changed hands for revenues of $427,360, marking a 30 percent improvement from the 2020 sale, when the same number of yearlings brought $327,400. The average sale price rose 30 percent to $10,957 from $8,394, and the median grew 111 percent to $9,500 from $4,500.

Don Knight and Don Danard bought the sale-topper, Hip 30, a Value Plus gelding, for $32,000.

The chestnut gelding is the second foal out of the multiple stakes-winning Harlan's Holiday mare Holiday Maker. Bred in Alberta, the gelding hails from the family of Peruvian champion Ole Pegasus and Grade 2-placed stakes winner Adore. C. W. Matier consigned the sale-topper.

The all-ages portion of the catalog was led by a supplemental entry, Hip 1S, the unraced 2-year-old Bits of Lemon Drop, who sold to Perry Pellerin for $5,000. The Alberta-bred Declassify filly is out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Saint Lemone, and she was consigned by Workwize Ent. Stables.

Real Grace, a Mineshaft gelding, won two of nine starts in 2020, highlighted by an 18-1 upset victory in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Century Mile. Earlier in the season, he also won the Derby Trial Stakes at Assiniboia Downs.

The gelding started his 2020 campaign at Tampa Bay Downs after selling as a unraced racing-age prospect at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. Winter Mixed Sale in January. He raced twice in Florida, including a second-place effort in a maiden special weight for owner and trainer Bernell Rhone. He then shipped north to Canterbury Park for another second-place effort, this time with additional owners Shelley Brown, Jean McEwan, and Bette Holtman.

Real Grace then went north of the border for the remainder of his campaign and raced for trainer Shelley Brown, starting at Assiniboia Downs in Manitoba, where he broke his maiden in the Derby Trial Stakes. He then finished fifth in the Manitoba Derby.

The remainder of the gelding's season was spent at Century Mile in Alberta. He debuted with a win in the Count Lathum Handicap, and later found the highlight of his season in the Canadian Derby, Alberta's biggest race.

In addition to taking home Horse of the Year honors, Real Grace also earned the title as Alberta's champion 3-year-old male.

Bred in Kentucky by Peter Johnson, Real Grace is out of the stakes-winning Yes It's True mare True Way of Grace.

In total, 40 horses changed hands during Friday's sale for revenues of $327,400, down 27 percent from the previous year when 67 horses brought $451,300. The average sale price rose 25 percent to $8,395 from $6,736, while the median increased 67 percent to $4,500 from $2,700. The sale's buyback rate finished at 38 percent, compared with 40 percent in 2019.

Greg Tracy, agent, purchased the sale-topper, an Exhi filly out of the multiple stakes-winning Forestry mare Eustacia, for $44,000.

The second foal out of the dam, the Alberta-bred sale-topper hails from a deep family of stakes producers throughout North America, including stakes-winning second dam Sparkling Pink. Highfield Investment Group consigned the filly, as agent.

True North Stable landed the auction's second-highest-priced offering, a Kentucky-bred Laoban filly, for $26,500.

The bay filly is out of the stakes-placed Bernardini mare Kimono, and her extended family includes Grade 1 winners Declassify, A Phenomenon, and Seattle Meteor. Stone Ranches Ltd. consigned the filly.

This year's sale, like all of the country's sales operated under the CTHS banner, offered online bidding for the first time in 2020 to accommodate those unable to attend due to COVID-19.

Online bids accounted for six of the auction's successful purchases, totaling $45,900 – roughly 14 percent of the sale's total gross. The two most expensive online purchases each brought $15,000: an O'Prado Again filly who sold to Shot In the Dark Racing and a Cross Traffic filly who sold to Meadowlake.

The CTHS will let interested owners' know what their available funds are based on the bonus being paid at 20 percent. The owner will indicate the amount they wish to access and at the time of the sale those funds would be deducted from the sale price and the balance paid by the purchaser. Owners do not have to access the full bonus amount if they do not choose to do so.

The CTHS will submit the request for the owners' bonus funds to the HBPA with an accounting of each owner and the amount of the 2020 Owners' Bonus they have requested to access.

All but one of this year's offerings are yearlings, with the lone exception being a 2-year-old by Girolamo. The catalog consists almost entirely of Alberta-breds, save for six yearlings born in Kentucky and two Ontario-breds.

Graduates of the CTHS Alberta sale are eligible for a variety of stakes races, including the CTHS Alberta Yearling Sales Stakes, which offers a series of $50,000 (Canadian) races at Century Mile for horses from two to four years old. The Canadian Sales Stakes Series is open to all Canadian-bred yearling graduates of CTHS provincial sales, offering races in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Ontario, ranging from $30,000 to $250,000. Horses seeking to enter Canadian Sales Stakes Series races outside of the province where they sold are eligible after paying additional nomination and starting fees.
