A lack of competitors doesn't always translate to a lack of competition and the GII Shuvee S. at Saratoga is a case in point, with an abbreviated field of four featuring a pair of titans. Fellow Curlin daughters Clairiere and Malathaat will bring their rivalry to round six in the 1 1/8-mile contest at the Spa; the latter coming out on the better end on four prior occasions. Malathaat will be breaking from the gate sporting blinkers for the first time in her career, likely intended to combat her tendency to wait on her competition, and she has been working with the new equipment in the mornings as well.

Todd Pletcher will be shooting for his fifth victory in this event (Curalina-2016, Stopchargingmaria-2015, Authenticity-2013, Awesome Maria-2011) should their match up here return in her favor, tying his record with the legendary H. Allen Jerkens for most Shuvee wins as conditioner. Steven Asmussen looks to add his name to the race's annuals for the first time after most recently saddling She's a Julie (Elusive Quality) to a third place finish in 2019. Both Clairiere and Malathaat ran career high Beyers of 106 last out in the GI Ogden Phipps, and are the horses to beat here, nearly guaranteeing that history of some kind will be made on Spa Sunday.

To their inside, and hoping to play spoiler, is the aptly named Crazy Beautiful (Liam's Map) for trainer Kenny McPeek, who's riding into the race on the back of a fruitful summer season. The grey has faced Malathaat on three occasions and never been in winning contention in any of those races, but she's the third millionaire in this field, and those purses didn't come without effort. A winner of Turfway Park's Apr. 2 Latonia S. over the synthetic and second last out June 25 in the Lady Jaqueline S. at Thistledown behind MGISP Army Wife (Declaration of War), Crazy Beautiful will be trying for her eighth lifetime win here. Former $40,000 claimer Exotic West (Hard Spun) rounds the field from the rail and faces a tall task having never run a number anywhere close to the divisional leaders on her outside.

'Magic' in Del Mar's Cougar II Marathon
MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm's GISP Tizamagician (Tiznow) makes his 5-year-old bow while trying to win the GIII Cougar II S. for the second year in a row where the 'Turf Meets the Surf.' Super consistent Dicey Mo Chara (GB) (Adaay {Ire}) will try to make his first dirt marathon a winning one for his eagle-eyed connections of Red Baron's Barn LLC and Rancho Temescal LLC and conditioner Leonard Powell.

Salty Graded Fields North of the Border
It's Kentucky-vs-European-breds in the turfy GII Dance Smartly S. at 1 1/16-miles at Woodbine. The G1SP Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}), a 695,000gns purchase by Tracy Farmer from last year's Tattersalls December Mares Sale, heads the field carrying solid European form including two black-type wins as a juvenile, though both at shorter distances, as well as a placing in Group 1 company in the English 1000 Guineas last year.

The formidable partnership of Team Valor International and Gary Barber will try to circle the field with their two classy fillies, namely GISP Wakanaka (Ire) (Power {GB}) and French stakes-winner Keyflower (Fr) (Kheleyf). Charles Fipke's Lady Speightspeare (Speightstown) and the Josie Carroll-trained Seasons (Tapit) round out the Kentucky-bred contingent, while Ontario-bred horse-for-course Munnyfor Ro (Munnings) will try to parlay her liking for the track into her first seasonal win.

Before the turf fillies get rolling, the synthetic sprinters will shine in the GIII Hendrie S. with heavy favorite Boardroom (Commissioner) slated to take most of the action at the ticket windows. Familiar foes Amalfi Coast (Tapizar), conditioned by Mark Casse, and Artie's Princess (We Miss Artie) return to continue the rivalry triangle, and MGSP La Libertee (Consitution) will try to out finish her Casse stablemate.

Multiple graded stakes-winning Crazy Beautiful made an impressive seasonal turf debut last out but will return to more familiar surroundings on a dirt track as part of an eight-horse field of 3-year-olds fillies competing at 1 1/8 miles in the $200,000 Grade 3 Comely on Friday at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Crazy Beautiful, owned by Phoenix Thoroughbred III, had racked up all five of her stakes wins on dirt before trainer Kenny McPeek moved the Liam's Map daughter back to turf for the first time since her successful career debut in July 2020. Crazy Beautiful ran a competitive second, finishing one length behind winner Navratilova, in the 1 1/16-mile G3 Valley View on October at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky.

After posting three graded stakes wins in 1 1/16-mile main track races earlier this campaign – capturing the G2 Gulfstream Park Oaks in March, the G2 Summer Oaks in May at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., and the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks in July at Delaware Park in Wilmington, Del., – McPeek said the return foray to grass was prompted by scheduling limitations more than a desire to deviate from what had been a successful sophomore blueprint for the Kentucky bred.

“There weren't any options for straight 3-year-old fillies at the time,” McPeek said. “She was doing well and she continues to do well after her last start. It looks like the Comely will be a good spot for her.”

Crazy Beautiful has compiled a 4-2-0 record in eight starts in 2021. Her only off-the-board efforts have come against top-flight competition, with a 10th in the G1 Kentucky Oaks on the eve of the Kentucky Derby on April 30 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., and a sixth-place showing in the G1 Alabama in August at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

McPeek said the 72nd edition of the nine-furlong Comely could facilitate a start in the $300,000 G1 American Oaks on the grass that is slated for Opening Day of Santa Anita's winter/spring meet on December 26.

“The goal is to get her to the American Oaks at the end of the year,” he said. “The Valley View gave me a test drive that she can handle the turf just fine. She's shown previously that she can run on anything.”

Jockey Kendrick Carmouche will ride Crazy Beautiful for the first time, breaking from post 4.

Three Diamond Farm's Army Wife has finished in the money in each of her last eight starts dating to October 2020 for trainer Mike Maker. The Declaration of War filly won the prestigious G2 Black-Eyed Susan on the eve of the Preakness at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., before posting a 3 3/4-length score in the G3 Iowa Stakes in July at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa.

Elevated to G1 levels, Army Wife held her own, earning black type twice, starting with a third-place effort behind Clairiere and winner Malathaat in the Alabama before garnering another third in the Cotillion behind Obligatory and a winning Clairirere in September at Parx Racing in Bensalem, Penn.

Army Wife, 4-1-1 in 11 career starts, will see rider Luis Saez in the irons from post 6.

Victories in her last four starts – and five wins in her last six races – has earned Vegas Weekend a seat at a higher stakes table as she makes her first stakes appearance in her 12th career start.

Trained by Rob Atras, the Mineshaft filly has won at distances ranging from 6 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles, which she accomplished in an off-the-turf claiming contest in August at the Spa.

Claimed for $50,000 out of a win traveling nine furlongs on August 19 at Saratoga, Vegas Weekend bested optional claimers by three-quarters of a length off the layoff going seven furlongs on November 12 at the Big A.

Atras said he wasn't worried about the cut back in distance last out in Vegas Weekend's first start for new connections.

“When she won the mile and an eighth, we were hoping to keep her going further but when she works in the morning she shows a pretty good turn-of-foot,” Atras said. “I wasn't worried about running her seven-eighths.”

Owned by Sanford Goldfarb, Alan Khan, and Koshanostra Stables, Vegas Weekend seems ready to wheel back after another positive effort, her conditioner said.

“I think having that race is good for her,” Atras said. “It's a little bit quick back, but she's a nice, sound filly and she came out of the race good.”

Manny Franco will ride from the outermost post.

Rigney Racing's Played Hard, fifth in the Alabama over the summer going 1 1/4 miles, garnered a personal-best 91 Beyer Speed Figure for her runner-up effort last out to fellow Comely contender Crazy Beautiful in the 1 1/16-mile Seneca in October at Churchill.

Trained by Phil Bauer, Played Hard will be making her Aqueduct debut, breaking from post 5 with Martin Garcia aboard.

Rounding out the field is Shalimar Gardens, owned by Barry Schwartz, who was fourth in her stakes debut in the Grade 2 Raven Run last out in October at Keeneland for trainer Horacio DePaz [post 3, Hall of Famer John Velazquez]; Bees and Honey, making her stakes bow in her fifth career start for trainer J. Reeve McGaughey [post 7, Jose Lezcano]; Hybrid Eclipse, fourth in the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks, for trainer Linda Rice [post 1, Dylan Davis]; and Ninetypercentbrynn, who will be seeking her first stakes win in her first graded stakes appearance for trainer Butch Reid [post 2, Eric Cancel].

The Comely is slated as Race 9 on the 10-race card with a post time of 3:43 p.m. Eastern. First post is 11:50 a.m.

Four-time stakes winner Crazy Beautiful (Liam's Map), who raced once on turf in her career debut, will return to the lawn Friday at Keeneland in an extremely deep renewal of the GIII Rubicon Valley View S. for 3-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles on turf.

Running away to a 3 1/2-length score first out on the Ellis turf last summer, the gray repeated by 3 3/4 lengths in the Runhappy Debutante S. on dirt there to earn 'TDN Rising Star' honors before recording runner-up finishes in the GIII Pocahontas S., GI Darley Alcibiades S. and GII Davona Dale S. Back in the winner's circle after a score in the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks, the $250,000 Fasig-Tipton October grad has added victories in the GII Summertime Oaks, GIII Delaware Oaks and last out in the Seneca Overnight S. Oct. 1 at Churchill.

A fellow 'Rising Star', Tobys Heart (Jack Milton) is looking for her third stakes triumph and first going a route of ground. A dominant 6 3/4-length debut maiden winner despite early trouble last June at Churchill, the $45,000 OBS March bargain backed that up with a success in Saratoga's Bolton Landing S. and annexed the Limestone Turf Sprint S. over this course Apr. 9. Winless in her next three starts, she was last seen cruising to a 2 3/4-length victory with a field-high 92 Beyer in the Nelson's Green Brier Whiskey Music City S. over 6 1/2 furlongs at Kentucky Downs Sept. 12.

It speaks to the depth of this field that an undefeated Grade I winner in Lady Speightspeare (Speightstown) is pegged at 10-1 on the morning line. Also earning a 'Rising Star' badge thanks to a 3 3/4-length score debuting at seven furlongs on the Woodbine grass last August, the Chuck Fipke homebred validated that distinction with a conquest of the GI Natalma S. as the favorite less than a month later. Forced to the bench for nearly a year, the chestnut returned to capture a Woodbine allowance/optional claimer by two lengths over this distance Sept. 6.

Streaking Queenship (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}) adds European flair to the field, making her North American debut for trainer Joseph O'Brien. Third at 14-1 when unveiled over six furlongs on all-weather last November at Dundalk in Ireland, the bay graduated by a head when stretching out a furlong there next out and took a handicap event by five lengths in her first turf try Apr. 7 at Gorwan Park. Facing males in her initial stakes attempt, she scored a half-length victory in the Navigaton S. Sept. 28 at Cork.

Another recent Euro import rates a big chance in Breaker of Chains (Bernardini). Third after a slow break debuting over a mile July 18 at The Curragh, the $30,000 Keeneland November buy improved a spot against males over nine furlongs on soft ground at Leopardstown Aug. 5 and rallied from last to first for an impressive maiden win with an 89 Beyer Sept. 11 at Kentucky Downs.

Will's Secret, a Dallas Stewart-trained filly, headlines a field of likely runners in this year's Grade 3, $200,000 Remington Park Oaks, scheduled as a part of a multi-stakes day that includes the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby.

Also on that Sunday, Sept. 26, the all-time winningest horse in Remington Park history, Welder is expected to go for his 28th career win all-time and his 17th victory in Oklahoma City in the $150,000 David M. Vance Stakes.

Will's Secret, a daughter of Will Take Charge, out of the Giant's Causeway mare Girls Secret, began the year by winning the $200,000 Martha Washington Stakes at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., for owner Willis Horton Racing. She followed that with a victory in the Grade 3, $300,000 Honeybee Stakes, also at Oaklawn. She raced in the biggest race of the year for 3-year-old fillies in the Grade 1, $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks on April 30 at Churchill Downs. Will's Secret finished a respectable third behind the top 3-year-old filly in the country – Malathaat. It was the second third-place finish for her behind that monster, also losing in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes.

Will's Secret was bred in Kentucky by her owner. Her lifetime record is 10 starts, three wins and four thirds for $536,300 in earnings. Her trainer, Stewart, has made a name for himself by finishing second in back-to-back Kentucky Derbies with longshots. He ran second to Orb in 2013 with 34-1 shot Golden Soul and then second to California Chrome in 2014 with Commanding Curve at 37-1.

Stewart also was in charge of a string of D. Wayne Lukas world-class runners that included Horse of the Year Lady's Secret, Kentucky Derby winners Winning Colors (1988) and Thunder Gulch (1995).

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Also expected to make the trip to Remington Park for the Oaks is Moon Swag, a filly by Malibu Moon, out of the Put It Back mare Yara, trained by Brendan Walsh. Moon Swag's best race this year came in the Grade 3, $200,000 Indiana Oaks at Indiana Grand racetrack. She lost by only a neck in that race, finishing well ahead of Will's Secret.

Moon Swag was bred by Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky and is owned by Brad King, Jim Cone, Scott Bryant and Stan and Suzanne Kirby. She has won two of nine starts with one second and three thirds for $163,400 earned.

Another filly confirmed for the Oaks is Crazy Beautiful, a daughter of Liam's Map, out of an Indian Charlie mare, Indian Burn. She is trained by Kenny McPeek and owned by Phoenix Thoroughbred III. She was bred in Kentucky by Carolyn Vogel. This filly has won two of her last three starts and would come in from Saratoga where she last raced in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes. She had won the Grade 2, $200,000 Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita and the Grade 3, Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park. She took the Summertime Oaks by 1-3/4 lengths before blowing away a field at Delaware by six lengths. Among McPeek's superstar trainees have been Take Charge Lady, Swiss Skydiver and Harlan's Holiday. He has trained eight horses that have surpassed the $1 million mark in earnings and has conditioned horses that have won $91 million-plus in his career.

Crazy Beautiful has had 11 starts, five wins and three seconds for a bankroll of $709,865. She would be the top earner in the Remington Park Oaks should she enter.

Another with a graded stakes win on her resume expected for the Oaks is My Girl Red. Owned by Erich Brehm of Weatherford, Texas and trained by Steve Asmussen, My Girl Red won the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar as a 2-year-old in 2020.

A daughter of Texas Red from the Fusaichi Pegasus mare Morakami, My Girl Red has been searching for consistency most of 2021. She has just one win, in allowance company at Lone Star Park this summer. She started in a five-furlong sprint over the turf on the opening night of this Remington Park season, finishing last in a field of eight. The Remington Park Oaks would be just the second start on a main track, around two turns, for My Girl Red.

The Oklahoma Derby and Oaks headline a big stakes afternoon on the only Sunday scheduled during the Remington Park season. The total stakes card includes:

Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby
Grade 3, $200,000 Remington Park Oaks
$150,000 David M. Vance Stakes
$100,000 Remington Green Stakes
$75,000 Ricks Memorial Stakes
$75,000 Kip Deville Stakes
$50,000 Flashy Lady Stakes
$50,000 E. L. Gaylord Memorial Stakes

Remington Park Stakes Coordinator Don Thompson says Keepinmind, Team Merchants, King Fury, Warrant and Fulsome are all possible starters for the Oklahoma Derby.

Racing continues this week with an eight-race card Thursday night and a pair of nine-race cards Friday and Saturday. First post time is 7:07 p.m. each night.

Peter J. Callahan's reigning Eclipse champion 3-year-old filly Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil–Expo Gold, by Johannesburg) will be offered at Fasig-Tipton's The November Sale, also known as the Night of the Stars, according to a press release from trainer Kenny McPeek. Runnymede Farm will serve as agent. Swiss Skydiver is currently out of training after finishing off the board in the Aug. 28 GI Personal Ensign S.

“It's been an honor to train her over the last three years,” said McPeek. “She's sound and healthy. Her owner, Peter Callahan, and I thought she deserved a little rest from racing. She's a classy filly, a sincere pleasure. She has the heart of a true champion and gave her all. She's an exceptional horse–one of those rare horses you don't see very often.”

During her championship season, Swiss Skydiver won the GI Preakness S. in a battle over eventual Horse of the Year and GI Kentucky Derby winner Authentic (Into Mischief). The chestnut is one of only six fillies to win that jewel of the Triple Crown. At three, she also captured the GI Alabama S., GII Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Park Oaks, the GII Santa Anita Oaks, and the GIII Fantasy S. in addition to finishing second in both the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks and the GII Toyota Blue Grass S., the latter against the boys.

Swiss Skydiver began this year with a win in the GI Beholder Mile S., but finished third in the GI Apple Blossom H. behind Letruska (Super Saver) and Monomoy Girl (Taptizar). A barn quarantine changed her summer schedule, but she reemerged against males again in the GI Whitney S. and came away fourth behind Knicks Go (Paynter). She was last seen again behind Letruska in the aforementioned Personal Ensign. Overall, Swiss Skydiver has a record of 16-7-3-2 and earnings of $2,216,480.

“It's the right time to let her move into her next chapter,” said Callahan. “A once-in-a-lifetime horse, she gave me and my family everything we could have possibly dreamed of and more, the biggest thrills we've had in this business so far. I just can't say enough good things about her. We're looking forward to seeing great things from Swiss Skydiver in her next chapter.”

Also from the McPeek barn, both Crazy Beautiful (Liam's Map–Indian Burn, by Indian Charlie) and Simply Ravishing (Laoban–Four Wishes, by More Than Ready) will also be offered at The November Sale Night of the Stars. Crazy Beautiful, owned by Phoenix Thoroughbreds, is a triple graded stakes winner and Grade I-placed. Her year has included wins in the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks, GII Summertime Oaks, and GIII Delaware Oaks. She was also last seen at Saratoga, finishing off the board behind Malathaat (Curlin) in the GI Alabama S.

Simply Ravishing, who campaigned in partnership for Harold Lerner LLC, Magdalena Racing, and Nehoc Stables, won the GI Darley Alcibiades S. as well as Saratoga's P. G. Johnson S. last year. Her 2021 campaign has been limited with only two starts, neither of which yielded the type of fruit seen in her 2-year-old campaign.

Crazy Beautiful will be offered at Fasig-Tipton by Denali Stud, agent, and Simply Ravishing will be offered by Gainesway, agent.

“It's been an honor to train her over the last three years,” said Kenny McPeek. “She's sound and healthy. Her owner Peter Callahan and I thought she deserved a little rest from racing. She's a classy filly, a sincere pleasure. She has the heart of a true champion and gave her all. She's an exceptional horse – one of those rare horses you don't see very often.”

Swiss Skydiver's win over Authentic in the 2020 Preakness was the pinnacle of her racing career, cementing her award for the 2020 Eclipse Award for champion 3-year-old filly. She won a battle in the stretch over Kentucky Derby winner Authentic to beat the colts. It was the second-fastest Preakness Stakes, finishing in 1:53.10 – only .10 seconds off Secretariat's 1973 record. Her Preakness victory will be remembered as one of the most memorable in Thoroughbred racing. Not only does she join the exclusive list of six fillies to ever win the Preakness, she tops this remarkable list of fillies as the fastest.

Other career highlights include victories in The 2020 Grade 1 Alabama Stakes and The 2021 G1 Beholder Mile winning both impressively by easily running away in the stretch.

“It's the right time to let her move into her next chapter” said owner Peter Callahan. “A once-in-a-lifetime horse, she gave me and my family everything we could have possibly dreamed of and more, the biggest thrills we've had in this business so far. I just can't say enough good things about her. We're looking forward to seeing great things from Swiss Skydiver in her next chapter.”

Two other McPeek-trained fillies – Crazy Beautiful and Simply Ravishing – will also be offered for sale at The November Sale's Night of Stars. Crazy Beautiful, a multiple graded stakes-winning filly with earnings of $709,863, will be sold by Denali Stud, agent. The winner of the 2020 G1 Alcibiades Stakes, Simply Ravishing, will be offered by Gainesway, agent.

Maracuja (Honor Code) put an end to 'TDN Rising Star' Malathaat's (Curlin) unbeaten record when they last met in Saratoga's GI CCA Oaks July 24. Now that GI Kentucky Oaks winner will try to turn the tables on that foe and return to winning ways as the even-money morning-line favorite in Saturday's prestigious GI Alabama S. going an additional furlong at the Spa.

A perfect three-for-three as a juvenile, capped by a victory in the GII Demoiselle S., Malathaat kicked off her sophomore campaign with a head success in Keeneland's GI Central Bank Ashland S. Apr. 3. The $1.05-million KEESEP acquisition rallied to a gritty victory in the Kentucky Oaks Apr. 30 and led every step of the way in the CCA Oaks before being worn down late by Maracuja to be second by a head.

“I'm hoping that we get on the outside and stay clear. Those other two fillies [Maracuja and Clairiere] just kept tag teaming her and she never had a chance to take a breath,” said Shadwell Stables' General Manager Rick Nichols. “I think the additional distance will be a benefit to her as well. Her pedigree certainly points towards that direction.”

Graduating at third asking at Aqueduct in February, Maracuja was second to GI Acorn S. winner and Oaks runner-up Search Results (Flatter) in the GIII Gazelle S. Apr. 3 and could only manage seventh in the Run for the Lillies. Dispatched at 14-1 in a four-horse field last time in the CCA Oaks, the gray was given an excellent ride from Ricardo Santana, Jr., overtaking the chalk just in time for a breakthrough score.

“When Kendrick [Carmouche] got off her the first time she won he said that he couldn't wait for us to stretch her out in distance. He knew right away,” trainer Rob Atras said. “You always hope for the best, but our goal was always to target the Coaching Club and the Alabama, so it's nice that things are coming together.”

Also exiting the CCA Oaks is regally bred, Grade II winner Clairiere (Curlin). Winner of the GII Rachel Alexandra S. in February, the Stonestreet homebred rallied to be second to Travel Column (Frosted) in the GII Fair Grounds Oaks a month later. Closing strongly to be fourth in the Kentucky Oaks, the daughter of MGISW Cavorting (Bernardini) was third in the GII Mother Goose S. at Belmont June 26 and loomed a brief threat before fading to third in the CCA Oaks.

Ken McPeek saddles a filly worth a look here at a bit of price in Crazy Beautiful (Liam's Map). A decisive victress of the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks Mar. 27, she failed to fire when 10th on the Last Friday in April, but rebounded with a victory in the GII Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita May 30. The gray romped by six lengths last out as the heavy favorite in an underwhelming renewal of the GIII Delaware Oaks July 3.

Also worth consideration to fill out the superfecta is Army Wife (Declaration of War), who exits victories in the GII Black-Eyed Susan S. May 14 and GIII Iowa Oaks July 2.
