Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort, one of the largest employers in Garland County, Arkansas, is offering all active and future fully vaccinated team members a vaccine incentive.

Beginning Oct. 10, wages for all current and future fully-vaccinated non-tipped, hourly team members will be raised to a minimum of $16 per hour. Tipped hourly team members will be raised to a minimum of $8.50 per hour and salaried team members will receive a 3% increase. Oaklawn's new starting annual salary for fully-vaccinated salaried team members will be $40,000 per year. Current team members are eligible for the vaccine incentive through Dec. 31.

“We live in challenging times right now,” said Oaklawn President Louis Cella. “We are struggling to fill open positions and COVID is still hanging on. With the vaccine incentive, we are looking to change the financial health of our current and future team members. Most importantly, Oaklawn believes in protecting the health of our team members, their families and our community. The vaccine incentive, coming on the heels of the FDA approving the Pfizer vaccine, should move those unvaccinated to become vaccinated.”

New and seasonal Oaklawn team members after January 1, 2022 will be eligible for the vaccine incentive by providing a valid vaccination card.

In addition to the vaccine incentive, Oaklawn will continue its COVID cash incentive drawings, which began Aug. 1. In total, Oaklawn is giving away $45,000 to Team Members who have provided documentation showing they have been fully vaccinated.

Team members are required to wear masks while at work and Oaklawn continues to provide and encourage its team members to get a free vaccine.

Woodbine will host a pop-up COVID-19 vaccine clinic at the track Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. for anyone requiring a first or second dose, including Toronto residents and those who work at Woodbine Racetrack, Casino Woodbine and the Casino Woodbine development. The vaccine clinic, which is operated by Unity Health Toronto, will operate for one day and is open to individuals 12 years and older in 2021 and who live or work in Toronto.

Woodbine Racetrack previously hosted a six-day pop-up COVID-19 vaccine clinic in May 2021. During that clinic, more than 15,300 individuals received their first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. For the July 28 pop-up clinic, 3,000 Pfizer doses will be available to anyone who is eligible and who have yet to receive their first or second vaccine dose.

“We are very proud and grateful to be able to host another pop-up clinic at Woodbine Racetrack for the benefit of all who have not yet received their first or second dose, including our employees and backstretch stakeholders,” said Jim Lawson, CEO, Woodbine Entertainment. “As a company, we are committed to doing our part to make our communities safe and this is one way we are able to contribute.”

The pop-up COVID-19 vaccine clinic will be safely located outside of the Woodbine grandstand. Residents attending the racetrack for the clinic are asked to observe signage and follow the instructions of onsite personnel.

The vaccine clinic, which is supported by the North Etobicoke Community Cluster Partners, will operate for a minimum of three days and is open to individuals 18 years and older in 2021 and living in 'hot spot' communities in M9V and M9W.

“We are very proud and grateful to be able to host this much needed pop-up clinic at Woodbine Racetrack for the Rexdale community,” said Jim Lawson, CEO, Woodbine Entertainment. “We look forward to working with our community partners over the coming days to deliver a positive experience that will benefit people throughout Rexdale.”

The pop-up COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic will also be open to frontline essential workers who provide daily care to the horses stabled at Woodbine Racetrack.

“These workers are critical to the wellbeing of more than 1,000 horses and obviously cannot work from home. Many of them live in dormitories on our property and in the surrounding areas,” said Lawson.

With live racing transitioning from New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) 's Aqueduct Racetrack to Belmont Park for the start of the spring/summer meet Apr. 22, Aqueduct will continue to serve as mass COVID-19 vaccination center. The New York State vaccination distribution center opened Jan. 18 and has provided more than 180,000 doses. Operating seven days a week, the Aqueduct site is now providing as many as 4,000 doses per day.

“This facility has vaccinated more than 180,000 individuals since January thanks to the teamwork displayed by employees from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, Department of Health, Division of Military and Naval Affairs, Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, New York State Police, Somos Community Care and the New York Racing Association, and I applaud all their efforts in this fight to help us end the pandemic,” said Patrick A. Murphy, Commissioner of the State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services.

Belmont also serves as vaccination distribution center, operated by Northwell Health. The vaccination hub, which also opened in January, will continue to administer vaccinations through Belmont's 2021 spring/summer meet.

“NYRA is proud to contribute to the mass vaccination effort to help turn the page on the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dave O'Rourke, NYRA President and CEO. “We thank all those who have been working at Aqueduct Racetrack and Belmont Park to protect their fellow New Yorkers during this public health crisis.”

Since April 2020, the Aqueduct parking lot has been the site of a drive-thru COVID-19 testing location.

The following note was distributed by Emerald Downs president Phil Ziegler late Monday:

The Muckleshoot Tribe had a vaccination event on January 29-31 in their Health & Wellness parking lot. This event included employees of their businesses and their household family members.

It was brought to our attention on Saturday that racing industry people who were not employed by Emerald Downs were going to the event and representing themselves as employees. This misrepresentation was documented on the consent form.

Throughout the weekend we kept hearing from our employees that they saw trainers, horse owners and other industry people at the event who are not employed by the track.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Needless to say, this is not a good reflection upon our industry.

On February 19-21 the Tribe will be holding a second dose event for all those who received their first dose on January 29-31.

This event once again includes industry people who are employed by Emerald Downs (plus household members), had a vender pass or other venders who had authorization to attend.

For essential workers at the track who will be actively working in the stable area when we open in March, we can provide authorization for you to attend the second event.

For authorization, please email your information to philz@emeralddowns.com or if you have any questions please call me at 253-288-7004.
