The 2024 Rathasker Stud roster and fees, anchored by Bungle Inthejungle (GB) at €7,500, were announced on Wednesday.

The sire of six stakes horses in 2023, the 13-year-old has been represented by G3 Marble Hill S. winner and G1 Phoenix S. third Givemethebeatboys (Ire), as well as American listed winner Manhattan Jungle (Ire) among others. The son of Exceed And Excel (Aus) covered 64 mares this year.

Coulsty (Ire) has been priced at €5,500. A total of 90 mares visited him this year. Grade I winner Shantisara (Ire) padded her resume with a victory in the GII Hillsborough S., and she made $1.3 million on the bid of Shadai Farm at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale on Tuesday evening.

Rounding out the roster is Gregorian (Ire) at €4,500. The group sire has seven stakes winners to his credit lifetime. All three offer Oct. 1st terms.

“Rathasker stallions continue to produce high class racehorses on the track and therefore, are popular at the sales. We have priced our stallions for the commercial market, giving breeders a good opportunity to make a profit,” said Rathasker's Maurice Burns.

Our series featuring notable success for European sires in North America, with this week's highlight being the victory of Grade I winner Shantisara (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}) in the GII Hillsborough S. at Tampa Bay Downs.

Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb and Robert LaPenta's Shantisara is no stranger to the winner's circle, and the 2021 GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. heroine secured her first victory since 2021 with a 1 1/4-length triumph in the Hillsborough S. on Saturday (video).

Now a 5-year-old, the mare was bred by Oliver Donlon, and sold for 10,000gns as a Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up graduate in 2020. Sent to the yard of Daniele Zarroli, she made her first two starts for Ladritta SRL, winning her second, a Chantilly maiden claimer by five lengths in November of 2020. After taking a 2000-metre conditions race in December for Frederic Rossi in the colours of Patrick Dreux, she was runner-up in another conditions race, and Sol Kumin bought her before racing her once in his silks with Rossi to an eighth-place finish in the Listed Prix de la Californie on Valentine's Day in 2021.

With LaPenta and Michael Dubb added as owners, Shantisara triumphed in the GIII Pucker Up S. for Chad Brown at Arlington Park that August, before taking the Jockey Club Oaks Invitational S. in New York and her Keeneland Grade I later that autumn. Defeated by subsequent Eclipse champion Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom) in the GI Jenny Wiley S. at Keeneland in April, she returned with a fifth in the Fall Harvest S. there. Shantisara was second in the GIII Pegasus Wold Cup Filly & Mare Turf Invitational on Jan. 28 prior to the Hillsborough.

The only foal to make it to the races for Kharana (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who died in 2020, Shantisara is a granddaughter of the stakes-winning Khanata (Riverman), who was third in the G2 Pretty Polly S., while this is also the female family of champion and notable sire High Chaparral (Ire) (Sadler's Wells).

The Hillsborough heroine is one of three winners from three to race Stateside for Rathasker Stud stallion Coulsty. Of the other two, Coulthard (Ire) placed third in the GIII Green Flash H. at Del Mar.

The Doctor Is In

'TDN Rising Star' Dr Zempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) made his American bow a winning one in an allowance optional claimer at Gulfstream Park on Friday (video). The Peter Brant colourbearer stamped his sigil on the 7 1/2-furlong turf contest by 2 1/2 lengths. It was the 4-year-old gelding's fourth win in 10 starts.

Consigned by breeder Chris Wright's Stratford Place Stud to the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, the grey caught the eye of Demi O'Byrne, who signed on behalf of Brant's White Birch Farm to the tune of 420,000gns. Ger Lyons saddled Dr Zempf to a 2 1/4-length 'Rising Star'-worthy tally over yielding going at the Curragh in June of 2021, and he was not disgraced when fourth in the G2 Railway S. there later in the month. Less than a length off of Ebro River (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) in the G1 Phoenix S., Dr Zempf was unplaced behind Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) in the G1 Middle Park S. at Newmarket.

Back to winning ways at listed level at Leopardstown last April, he earned his first Group 3 badge with a two-length score in the Ballycorus S. two starts later on June 9. Third to 2020 GI Breeders' Cup Mile winner Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in the G2 Minstrel S. in July, Dr Zempf lost all chance in his final European appearance when rearing at the beginning of the G2 City Of York S. and trailed in eighth behind subsequent 2022 Breeders' Cup Mile third Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}). Gelded over the winter and switched to the Chad Brown barn, Friday was his first start in over 180 days.

Out of G3 Prix Eclipse heroine Souvenir Delondres (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), Dr Zempf is followed by the 3-year-old filly Visiting Hours (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and a juvenile colt named Phoenix Passion (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}). From the same clan as G1 Sussex S. winner and sire Noalcoholic (Fr) (Nonoalco), Phoenix Passion was picked up by George Gill's Opulence Thoroughbreds for 125,000gns out of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2.

Yeomanstown Stud's kingpin Dark Angel sports a record of 23 winners from 41 to race (56%) in the U.S., and 12 stakes horses (29%). Five of his progeny have won stakes Stateside (12% of 41 runners), led by three-time Grade I winner and Gainesway sire Raging Bull (Fr), dual Grade I winner Althiqa (GB), and GI Shoemaker Mile S. hero Hunt (Ire).

Zoffany Colt Game Over KY All-Weather

The much-missed Zoffany (Ire)'s Dark Side (Ire) found a 1 1/16th all-weather contest to his liking at Turfway Park on Friday (video), eking out a slim neck victory in the Qatar Racing colours. It was the first start in America for the Brendan Walsh trainee.

A product of Ann Marshall and Frank Dunne's Hamwood Stud Unlimited Company in Ireland, Dark Side hammered for 125,000gns to David Redvers, the racing manager for Qatar Racing, as part of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2021. Consigned by Bill Dwan and Andrew Mead's The Castlebridge Consignment, he was the third most expensive Zoffany yearling to be offered at that year's Tattersalls October Sale.

Put into training with Joseph O'Brien, the Feb. 28 foal was second on debut at Cork in September, and was later sixth in a hot Curragh maiden on Sept. 25 behind future G1 Criterium International second Espionage (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and runner-up Sierra Blanca (Ire) (No Nay Never), who was subsequently second to Cairo (Ire) (Quality Road) in the G3 Killavullan S. a month later. In his final Irish start, Dark Side was second again over 8 1/2 furlongs back at Gowran Park on Oct. 18.

Dark Side is one of four winners for his dam Shreyas (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who won a Group 3 in Ireland as a 3-year-old, and would later add a pair of listed victories and two more group placings at four. Her 2-year-old filly Porters Place (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) most recently sold for 70,000gns to Paddy Twomey as a Tattersalls October Book 2 yearling, and her latest offspring is a full-sister to Porters Place. He is kin to Group 1 winners and sires Youmzain (Ire), Creachadoir (Ire), and Pilsudski (Ire).

Zoffany's American strike rate stands at 25 winners from 51 runners (49%). There are also four stakes winners from those 51 (8%) for the late Coolmore sire, led by GII Hollywood Turf Cup hero Oscar Dominguez (Ire), GIII Marshua's River S. heroine Zofelle (Ire), and Zoffarelli (Ire), who won the GIII La Jolla H.

Shades Of Violet In Florida

Juddmonte stallion and GI Breeders' Cup Mile hero Expert Eye (GB) gained his third American winner with Violet Gibson (Ire) in her very first start at Gulfstream Park on Saturday (video). Trained by Saffie Joseph, Jr., the Mike Ryan homebred came calling late to win the 7 1/2-furlong affair over the firm turf by a head.

Bred in Ireland by Ryan's St. Croix Bloodstock, Violet Gibson is out of the unplaced Soul Of Houdini (Perfect Soul {Ire}), responsible for five winners from five to race, counting Saturday's scorer. Tracing to bluehen Coup De Folie (Halo) (Coup De Genie, Machiavellian, Exit To Nowhere, Hydro Calido, etc.), Soul Of Houdini's latest is a yearling filly also by a Juddmonte stallion in Bated Breath (GB).

Through Monday, Expert Eye, who has his first 3-year-olds this term, has 29 winners from 70 runners worldwide (41%) with the Flat season just around the corner. Joining Violet Gibson and Saturday's winning listed stakes second Beautifulnavigator (Ire) as his third winner of three runners Stateside (100%) is Isabel Alexandra (Ire), who landed a maiden special weight in Indiana last autumn.

Tampa Bay Royalty

Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables celebrated a winner at Tampa Bay Downs in the form of Royalty Interest (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) (video). The daughter of listed winner Dusky Queen (Ire) (Shamardal) was making her racetrack debut in Saturday's finale–a one-mile turf race, where she exploded away in the stretch to win by 3 1/4 lengths for Klarman's go-to trainer Chad Brown.

Bred by China Horse Club International in France and consigned by Henri Bozo's Ecurie des Monceaux, the bay was picked up for €50,000 out of the 2021 Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale. She is the third winner from three to race for Dusky Queen, herself a half-sister to two stakes horses, including the three-time grade/group-placed Achnaha (Ire) (Haatef). Royalty Interest's juvenile full-brother brought €10,000 out of the same sale last year from the buying entity the Six of Us, and she also has a Siyouni (Fr) yearling half-brother.

The late Le Havre, who stood at Sumbe's Haras de Montfort et Preaux before passing away last March, has a strong record Stateside. Eight of his 18 runners have won (44%), and another three have gained black-type laurels (16% of runners) in America. All three have ticked the graded stakes box, led by Suedois (Fr) in the GI Turf Mile S. at Keeneland, four-time graded heroine Rymska (Fr), and GIII Red Carpet H. victress Orglandes (Fr). The latter pair were also trained by Brown.

Honourable Mention

The breeze-up sales are nearly here, and lot 44 in the Tattersalls Craven Sale received an update last week, when his older half-brother, The Right Stuff (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), posted a 3 3/4-length victory for Holly and David Wilson in an allowance optional claimer at Turf Paradise.

Kodiac (GB) (Danehill) has long been a sought-after source of precocity, and as he has risen toward the upper echelon of proven stallions, the hunt is now on for his heir. Or heirs, as the case may be, because just as Kodiac's winners are legion, his sons' foals are starting to display that same vaunted quick-maturing zest for racing: a quartet of group-winning sons of Kodiac retired to stud in 2017-Kodi Bear (Ire), Adaay (Ire), Coulsty (Ire) and Prince of Lir (Ire)–and all have sired group winners with only two crops of racing age.

The 21-year-old Kodiac has every chance of establishing a sire line under his name, as he is the younger half-brother to Group 1 winner and Irish National Stud kingpin Invincible Spirit (Ire), himself a noted sire-of-sires globally, Kingman (GB) and I Am Invincible (Aus) being just two examples. Although he did not win a stakes race, Kodiac did place second in the G3 Hackwood S. before embarking on a stallion career at Tally-Ho Stud in 2007 at a fee of €5,000. He is priced at €65,000 for 2022-his fourth year at that level-and his sons are now stepping into the limelight.

It was the Rathbarry Stud stallion Kodi Bear, a winner of the G2 Celebration Mile and G3 Sovereign S. and also runner-up in the G1 Dewhurst S., who led the intake at €10,000. Kodi Bear's grandsire Danehill was famed for the versatility of his progeny, and it appears Kodi Bear could be headed that direction.

By the end of 2021, Kodi Bear had sired five black-type winners total, his three 2020 black-type scorers joined by another two in 2021. Across both crops he has thus far come up with 10 black-type horses. The smart filly Mystery Angel (Ire) won the Listed Pretty Polly S., and outstayed her pedigree when finishing second in Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn})'s runaway G1 Cazoo Oaks. The dual stakes winner Measure of Magic (Ire) also earned a Group 1 placing with a third at the other end of the distance spectrum in the G1 Commonwealth Cup.

Kodi Bear's trio of Group 1 horses-tops for his stallion intake barring Tally-Ho's rising star Mehmas (Ire) (Acclamation {GB})-was rounded out by G2 Railway S. hero Go Bears Go (Ire). Besides placing in the G2 Norfolk S. at the Royal meeting, the colt from Kodi Bear's second crop ran third in the G1 Phoenix S., fourth in the G1 Middle Park S. and bounced back with a close second in the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. Kodi Bear is from the family of three-time Group 1 winner Esoterique (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), and his 2022 fee has risen to €15,000.

Fellow Irish-based stallion Coulsty has already ticked the Group 1-winning box with his progeny, as has 2021 first-season sire Ardad (Ire), who stands at Overbury Stud. Although his opportunities have been more limited, Coulsty–the G3 Prix de Meautry hero–is advertised at €4,000 this year at Rathasker Stud in Ireland. Also runner-up in the G2 Hungerford S., Coulsty's quartet of black-type winners is led by last autumn's GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup heroine Shantisara (Ire) in the States and Santosha (Ire), who struck in the G3 Princess Margaret S. His seven black-type horses match another 2022 third-crop sire-Adaay, who started his career at Whitsbury Manor Stud.

Relocated to Allevamento di Besnate in Italy this term at €4,500, the dual group-winning Adaay sired four black-type horses in 2020 led by G3 Premio Primi Passi third Doctor Strange (GB). Last year marked his first group winner, with G3 Prix de Cabourg victress Have A Good Day (Ire) and second-crop listed winner Honey Sweet (Ire).

Similar to Coulsty, Prince of Lir's 2022 fee at Ballyhane Stud is €4,000. Represented by fellow Norfolk S. hero The Lir Jet (Ire), the 8-year-old's star progeny also ran second in the G1 Phoenix S.

But, it appears Kodiac isn't done consolidating his tail-male impact in pedigrees, as the aforementioned Ardad was the 2021 leading first-season sire in Britain and third in his class in Europe.

Through Jan. 30, the 8-year-old has sired 23 first-crop winners, his crowning glory the dual Group 1 winner Perfect Power (Ire), winner of both the G1 Prix Morny and the G1 Middle Park S. In between those victories was the G3 Sirenia S. tally of Eve Lodge (GB). Vintage Clarets (GB) also completed the trifecta in Royal Ascot's G2 Coventry S. Out of a half-sister to the dam of G1 Prix de l'Abbaye victor Maarek (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), Ardad commanded an opening fee of £6,500 in 2018, and Overbury has bumped him up to £12,500 for 2022.

Next in Line

Kessaar (Ire), a G2 Mill Reef S. and G3 Sirenia S. hero, is next to see if he can make a similar mark with his first 2-year-olds this year. Located at the sire-making Tally-Ho Stud, the 6-year-old has 77 juveniles in his first crop bred at €8,000 and they averaged £33,919/€40,575 for 37 sold of 41 offered at the yearling sales. His fee is currently €5,000.

The most accomplished son of Kodiac on the racecourse is new Gestut Lunzen resident Best Solution (Ire). A triple Group 1 winner in Germany and Down Under, the Australian champion stayer and top older horse in Germany relished trips well beyond the reach for the majority of his sire's stock. That is no doubt as a result of his staying female line: Best Solution's third dam Eva Luna produced the group-winning stayers Brian Boru (GB) and Sea Moon (GB). Starting out at Gestut Auenquelle at €6,500, the former Godolphin colourbearer and G1 Caulfield Cup victor's first foals are yearlings of 2022. His fee remains unchanged. It would also be no surprise to see his full-brother El Bodegon (Ire) enter the stallion ranks at some stage after winning last season's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud for James Ferguson to become Kodiac's first Group 1-winning juvenile colt.

Hello Youmzain (Fr) captured the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte as a juvenile and built on that early promise with wins in the G2 Sandy Lane S., a third in the G1 Commonwealth Cup and a tally in Haydock's G1 Betfair Sprint Cup in October of 2019. Haras d'Etreham's bay marked 2020 with a victory in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot and a second in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. He commanded €25,000 in 2021 and, his fee is unchanged for his second season, while the group-placed Flash Gordon (Ire) took up stud duties at Meelin Stud last year.

The intriguingly bred Nando Parrado (GB) will begin covering mares at the Irish National Stud for €6,000 in 2022. The son of Argentinean Group 3 victress and Group 1-placed Chibola (Arg) (Roy) broke his maiden by a length in the G2 Coventry S. in 2020. He promptly ran second in a pair of Group 1s-the Prix Morny to future G1 Commonwealth Cup heroine Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and to subsequent G1 Champion S. victor Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.

The 2020 G2 Flying Childers S. hero Ubettabelieveit (Ire) calls Mickley Stud home and stands for £5,000. Also third in the 2020 GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, he landed the Listed National S. earlier in his juvenile campaign.

Kodiac's most accomplished and best-bred sons are yet to be represented by their progeny on the racecourse-none of the first four to retire to stud were out of black-type mares. The future, therefore, looks bright for Kodiac and his heirs aplenty.

When standing a stallion there appears to be a defined path that most are destined to follow. Busy in year one, numbers drop in year two and three, and then your fate is sealed on whether their first crop can run or not. In the case of Bungle Inthejungle (Ire) and Coulsty (Ire), both have proven that their stock can run and can compete at the top level, with Winter Power (Ire) and Shantisara (Ire) having won Group 1 races for both sires, respectively. This gives Maurice and Madeline Burns of Rathasker Stud, where the stallions call home, every reason to be excited for the year ahead.

“Winter Power, who was a very good 2-year-old and progressed at three to win the G1 Nunthorpe S. at York, is very typical of Bungle's [stock],” says Maurice Burns. “They're precocious, they're strong, they have loads of speed and it's just another feather in his cap to produce a Group 1 winner. Because she showed how high a Bungle can go, his yearlings last year sold extremely well and have gone to some very, very good trainers.”

Last year's crop of yearlings made up to €125,000, which is 10 times the stud fee those horses were conceived on, and the “good trainers” who have a Bungle Inthejungle 2-year-old include Mark and Charlie Johnston, Michael Dods, and John Quinn among others. No doubt the icing on the cake for Bungle Inthejungle's 2021 season is the fact that Winter Power was bred by Maurice's brother Patrick Burns of Newlands House Stud.

Bungle Inthejungle's first crop were quick to suggest that he is a sire capable of getting precocious 2-year-olds, and in the first months of the flat season in 2018 there was hardly a juvenile maiden that went by without a Bungle Inthejungle either winning or catching the eye, most notably through Rumble Inthejungle (Ire) winning the G3 Molecomb S. at Goodwood. In his second crop, Living In The Past (Ire) won the G2 Lowther S. and so it was only fitting that a Group 1 winner should be found in his third crop.

“It is the same for everyone who has a stallion when they have the first runners,” Burns says. “You're praying that they are going to come out and be precocious, and win, and Bungle just did that. They came out, they ran, they won, he did exactly what we were hoping he would do. He did well the first year, then we filled him up well for the next year and things progressed on from there. Thank God Coulsty also had a good start.”

Boasting some of the best statistics in the book, Coulsty had smaller numbers to go to war with but those that have run have certainly made people stand up and pay attention to the young son of Kodiac (GB).

“He didn't have big crops on the ground but he took every opportunity he got,” said Burns. “The mares he got were bread-and-butter mares but he produced some very good horses and you know there is only one stallion from that crop who has two Group 1 winners and then you have New Bay (GB) and Coulsty with one apiece.”

The aforementioned Shantisara became Coulsty's first top-level winner in the GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland and her story has been well documented. A 10,000gns breeze-up purchase by agent Federico Barberini from breeze-up maestro Robson Aguiar, Shantisara's progression has certainly been a rags-to-riches tale and has helped to put a lot of people onto her sire.

Burns added, “On the stats, he's fantastic. A lot of the switched-on breeders are using him this year because last year we had over 100 mares to him. The more numbers you have the better chance you have of producing good horses so we'll see how high he can fly. If he keeps going on the way he's going, he's going to do very, very well.”

The third stallion to make up the Rathasker roster is Gregorian, who has returned to his place of birth and is by the stud's stalwart Clodovil (Ire), who is now retired. Gregorian's progeny have been flying the flag for him worldwide with Gregorian Chant (GB) winning graded races Stateside and his top performer being a Group 2 winner.

“He came up with a good filly in 2020 which was Plainchant (Fr) and she was the top-rated 2-year-old filly in France that year. He's got two stakes-winning horses in California so it means that he's internationally successful,” says Burns. “He's a very solid horse and he's one of those horses that has a very high winners-to-runners ratio.”

All three stallions have been kept at affordable fees for 2022 with Bungle Inthejungle spearheading the roster at €8,000. With their popularity you could hardly blame a considerable jump up in fees for each of their stallions but the patriarch of the family operation explains the decision behind the value to be found in his covering shed.

“We're a small family operation and we have a number of breeders who have used us for years,” says Burns. “You don't want to push them away, you want to keep them in the game with you. As the stallions progress, you take small steps forward and if you take a small step forward then the people who were with you at the start can stay with you. If take a large step you've got a new bunch of clients or maybe you don't have any clients at all.”

As breeders themselves the Burns family recognise the mutual benefits of stallions doing well.

“When you have successful horses on the farm everybody gets a lift from it,” Burns says. “When you go to the market and people are asking to look at the Bungle or the Coulsty or the Gregorian it is good for us and it's good for our clients. Your farm is based on what stallion you have or what stallions you use, and if your stallions are doing well then it's good for everyone.”

As the breeding season inches ever closer and larger crops start running for the Rathasker stallions it will be no surprise if everyone involved starts taking bigger steps forward together.

Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables and Bob LaPenta's Shantisara (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}) underscored the sheer domination of trainer Chad Brown in the nation's turf races with an emphatic victory in Saturday's GI Queen Elizabeth Challenge Cup S. at Keeneland. Also representing the four-time Eclipse Award winning trainer in the nine-furlong test was dual graded-winning Technical Analysis (Ire), however, early favoritism went to Coolmore's Empress Josephine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), hailing from another behemoth of the turf world, Aidan O'Brien.

Delayed a few minutes after the gate scratch of Lady Speightspeare (Speightstown), Shantisara, who was sent off at 5-2 behind the slightly more fancied 2-1 European invader, settled just off the early pace as stablemate Technical Analysis led into the first turn while under mild pressure from Empress Josephine and Burning Ambition through a :23.91 quarter. Inching her way forward following a half-mile in :48.63, Shantisara started to put the screws to the front runners midway on the far turn. Overtaking the weakening favorite turning for home, she collared the pacesetter in early stretch and drew off with ease to score by five lengths. Burning Ambition rounded out the trifecta. Empress Josephine faded to last of nine.

Shantisara's margin of victory is the largest in the history of the race, eclipsing the 4 1/2-length victory by Hot Cha Cha in 2009. The win also gave Brown his record fourth victory in the race following Dayatthespa (2012), Rushing Fall (2018) and Cambier Parc (2019) to break a tie he held with Jimmy Toner and John Veitch. Brown also won the GII Sands Point S. with Fluffy Socks at Belmont Park earlier in the afternoon.

“It was a good run and I was really pleased with the draw [post 3],” said winning rider Flavien Prat. “She broke well and I was able to tuck her in right away and she switched off nice. I thought the good horses were around me, and I was able to keep tracking them. She made a really good move around the turn–and when I asked her to make a move, she responded well. I was traveling super and, when it was time to go, she was there for me.”

Jose Ortiz, who partnered runner-up Technical Analysis, added, “She broke good, went to the lead and was a little keen early on. We set pretty decent fractions and I had plenty [of horse left] turning for home, but the other horse was just better. My filly was very relaxed [when they had to back the field out of the starting gate]. She's always a little nervous, but actually when they backed them up she was able to stand a little bit behind the gate and she relaxed a little bit better. I have no excuses; she ran her race.”

As for the beaten favorite, John Velazquez said, “It was going well until I [asked her for more] and she didn't go anywhere. She didn't have it. She didn't show up today.”

Shantisara, a winner of two of five starts for trainer Frederic Rossi in France, launched her U.S. campaign with a runner-up finish in Monmouth's Boiling Springs S. in June before breaking through with a three-length score in Arlington's nine-furlong GIII Pucker Up S. Aug. 14. Stretching out to 11 panels for her latest, she came home a 1/2 length on top in Belmont's Jockey Club Oaks Invitational Sept. 18.

“I expected her to run really well because of the way she breezed last time [five furlongs in 1:03.40 over the turf at Keeneland a week earlier],” explained Baldo Hernandez, assistant to winning trainer Chad Brown. “She improves all the time. She's coming along. This filly, she has a really good talent. She handled the turf really well here.”

Pedigree Notes:
With a Grade I win under her belt, Shantisara (Ire) moves to the head of the class for young sire Coulsty (Ire) and revives a previously prolific female line that had recently fizzled. Second-crop stallion Coulsty, who stands in Ireland's County Kildare at Rathasker Stud, has another Group winner in Santosha (Ire), as well as two additional listed winners, all in his first crop of 45 foals. Shantisara's broodmare sire, European Horse of the Year Dalakhani (Ire), will be far more familiar to Americans with the 41 stakes winners out of his daughters including 2019 English, French, and Irish champion Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal). Shantisara is the only runner out of her dam, the unraced and late Kharana (Ire). Interestingly, Kharana's dam was also unraced and her only winner was in Greece. Shantisara's third dam was a listed winner and Group-placed in Ireland, but also produced little of note. However, Shantisara's fourth dam was French champion Kozana (GB) (Kris {GB}), who counted U.S., Irish, and English champion High Chaparral (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) among her grandsons.

Group winner Santosha (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}), who won the July 26 G3 Princess Margaret S. at Ascot, is targeting the G2 Rockfel S. at Newmarket on Sept. 25. A winner at first asking at Lingfield, the David Loughnane trainee ran third in the G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. in early July, and was unplaced in the Aug. 20 G2 Lowther S. after a slow beginning.

“I think the whole experience of York just got to her and blew her brains a bit,” said Loughnane. “Just with the walk across the track from the stables, stuff like that can get to some horses and unfortunately she got worked up beforehand and blew the start.

“She actually did very well to finish where she did, but we’re going to freshen her up now for a couple of weeks before we bring her back in September for the Rockfel–it’s between that or the G1 Cheveley Park S. [on Sept. 26], but I think it will be the Rockfel. The Lowther looked right for her, but these things happen. She’s still the same filly she was, her form all stacks up.”

Providing another boost to the form of the July 10 G2 Duchess of Cambridge S., Santosha (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}) stepped up to capture Sunday’s G3 Princess Margaret Betfred S. at Ascot and provide her Rathasker Stud-based first-season sire with his initial black-type winner. Sent off at 5-1 coming off a third placing behind the G3 Albany S. scorer Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) and the subsequent Listed Star S. winner Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) in that contest at Newmarket’s July festival, the bay was reserved off the early pace by Thomas Greatrex and delivered to lead approaching the final furlong. Despite veering left in the closing stages, she was always doing enough to hold Hala Hala Hala (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) by 3/4 of a length, with the winner’s stablemate Caroline Dale (GB) (Lethal Force {Ire}) the same margin behind in third. Trainer David Loughnane was enjoying his red-letter day. “It’s great to have my first group winner at Ascot. It’s the Mecca, isn’t it, everyone wants to train winners here,” he commented. “We work very hard and we have had a lot of luck along the way, but it’s the icing on the cake that our first group winner is here.”

Santosha, the sole progeny out of a relative of Gold Academy (Ire) who captured the Listed Strensall S. and was third in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. and G1 St. James’s Palace S., went up against Dandalla and co as the 50-1 winner of a six-furlong median auction novice at Lingfield June 26. Also 50-1 there, she got within 3/4 of a length of a major upset and could arguably have been closer had the winner not veered across her path late on. Staying true to Thomas Greatrex, Loughnane’s decision was rewarded by a ride belying a lack of experience in this company as Santosha was guided to a breakthrough success. The occasion was not lost on the jockey, who said, “It is what we work towards. It is something I never really thought I would be doing and it’s great to get the opportunity from Dave and the team at home support me a lot, so it’s great to give them a group winner. We got a lovely run into the race and she has really stuck her head down and galloped. She got a bit lonely in front in the end, but she was brilliant. Stepping up in trip will be no problem at all–she stayed really well. I was running in snatches during the race, but once I got hold of her at the two-furlong pole she actually went down a gear and took off.”

Loughnane was celebrating a rare first and third in Pattern company for a lesser-known trainer, with Caroline Dale holding on for third having forced the pace. “I sat on them both Wednesday or Thursday morning and I told both owners I wouldn’t be able to split them,” he added. “Caroline Dale’s run a blinder. She has got headed and she has stayed on and galloped all the way to the line. She is a very tough filly and has got so much speed. Hindsight’s a great thing and maybe we should have gone for the [G3] Molecomb Stakes [at Goodwood], but this felt like the right race. She will have her day. The ground was probably quick enough for Santosha. The race ran to suit her just a little bit better.”

“Santosha should never have been the price she was–my surname might have something to do with it, but we are looking to change that. She was still a touch green today, but she is a very progressive filly and we’ve got a lot to look forward to. I think she will probably be a nicer filly next year, stepping her up to seven furlongs and a mile. She travels so sweetly, she never overdoes herself. She does what you want her to do and is push-button. Today was the plan, but the [G2] Lowther [at York] would have to be one of the next on her list. There are quite a few options in France for her. The owners, Susan and Paddy Lynas, mentioned the [G1] Cheveley Park Stakes after she ran in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes and if she keeps going in the right direction, that’s where we will be.”
