The update reads, in its entirety:

“I am amazed and motivated at the overwhelming support that the new Association has received!!!!! I have a name for the association that is are awaiting final approval. Not only have so many people reached out for our cause to make the horse racing industry better, but I've had a few tracks and five current racing associations contact me expressing great interest in working together to make the sport better. A few things I'd like to address are: 1. Thoroughbred Retirement has always been incredibly important to me. I've owned thousands of horses over 20 years, and have always focused on being a positive example for thoroughbred retirement. Many times a horse is claimed away from you and it is out of your control what happens a year later or three years later. Even though I am a significant donor to Old Friends, New Vocations, Thoroughbred Aftercare. I and we can all do better.

2. I've been investing in horse racing for 40 years. The first 20 as a gambler and the last 20 as a owner & a gambler. Gamblers put up their money for the sport. We need to do A LOT more and better for the gambler. The way the tracks need to make money financially is to grow the handle not the takeout. We all love this great sport!!!!!”

After his initial statement, Repole was questioned about why he hadn't addressed Thoroughbred retirement and the gambler in his comments.

NBC Sports will produce and air a two-hour telecast from 4-6 p.m. (ET) on CNBC. Five of the six stakes broadcast on the show will be part of a special All-Graded Stakes 1/ST COAST-TO-COAST PICK 5. The bet is a $1 minimum with a 15% takeout.

1/ST Racing and Gaming and NBC are working together on the special charity Pick 5 bet with the winnings to be allocated to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. NBC reporters Nick Luck and Britney Eurton will team up to face off against NBC analysts Randy Moss and Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey in a friendly competition. Each team will have $500 to bet on the Coast-To-Coast Pick 5 with the winnings being donated to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.

1/ST Racing & Gaming will donate $1000 to Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance no matter the outcome of the wagers.

“We are proud to support the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and are always looking for ways to raise awareness and donations to support their great work. This Saturday's 1/ST Racing Tour is shaping up to be an epic day of racing. With 13 stakes races and 263 horses entered at Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita Park, we thought we'd add to the excitement with a little help from our friends at NBC,” said Aidan Butler, Chief Executive Officer, 1/ST Racing & Gaming.

Protesters, including Pastor Timothy Findley Jr. of the Kingdom Fellowship Christian Life Center in Louisville and leader of the Justice and Freedom Coalition, have called for the Derby to be cancelled this year in the wake of the shooting death of Breonna Taylor. The 26-year-old African-American emergency medical technician was shot in her home by Louisville police executing a no-knock warrant in search of a suspected drug dealer. No one has been charged in her death.

On Aug. 25, protesters marched through Louisville, at one point gathering outside the main gate of Churchill Downs and hanging a “Justice for Breonna Taylor” sign over an entrance sign to the track.

Findley and others have said they plan more demonstrations over the next week in hopes of disrupting or cancelling the Derby..

“With all due respect to the pastor, I think that's not the majority of our community,” said Carstanjen. “The community in general overwhelmingly supports having the Derby. That doesn't mean that we're not sensitive and a part of the dialogue on the social and racial equality issues in our community and in our society.

“Our company's been around for 145 years – this is our 146^th Kentucky Derby,” Carstanjen told Evans. “But the feedback has been overwhelming to us through the community that this should go on. This is an important part of healing, this is an important part of our traditions and culture in our community.”

Evans also asked Carstanjen about the decision to run the Derby without spectators.

“Well, first it was a really, really hard decision and we made it at the last possible minute,” said Carstanjen. “But after a period where we saw some encouraging signs with COVID-19 and Jefferson County where Louisville is located, over the last couple of weeks we saw a real surge. So we've been designated a 'red zone' by the White House, and we're seeing some discouraging signs and we needed to make a decision.

“So it was personally and professionally a really disappointing decision to have to make but without question it was the right thing for us to do. Our priority is keeping our community safe, our fans, our team members, and we got to the point with the numbers being what they were that that was the only responsible decision.”
